Hello to all! Welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. We've got an hour and I'll try to get to as many questions on fantasy baseball and football as possible... thanks for showing up and here we go...
Which rookie you like more ROS: Belt or Duda?
Duda. I have low expectations that the Giants want to play Belt regularly, so I won't get my hopes up again. Plus, Duda has actually been really good. He always had power and hit right-handers, and he looks legit.
Outside of the top 6 backs Peterson, C. Johnson, J. Charles, A. Foster, L. McCoy and Ray Rice. Which back do you think is going to have a big year?
So in other words, who is my No. 7 back? Right? You're missing Jones-Drew. He's in the top 6.
Which 2 would you want out of these OFs? Boesch, Delmon Young or Abreu?
Ugh. Depends on if I need steals, to a degree. Abreu does nothing else. I'd probably take the Tigers at this point.
What do you expect of me ROS?
I want to be optimistic, but earlier today I said Lucas Duda and Mike Carp would be better options. I just don't see why the Twins, when they realize they are out of it, will push Morneau, and there has been NO indication Morneau is either healthy or will hit.
Hi Eric, I was just wondering what on earth the Twins were thinking giving away Delmon Young for a single-a prospect with an era of 4 something? Sure Young isn't great right now, but he was excellent last year and still is only 25. Thoughts?
Well... in fairness the Twins were not going to keep Young after this season, so at least they got something for him. And yes, he's 25, but with such poor plate discipline it's unlikely he gets significantly better. That said, I like the move for the Tigers. They improved a bit.
Trade deadline has passed and I am stuck with "cannot drop" sub par performance players. Must drop one of the rest to make room for player coming off DL. Rate Berkman, Kupnis and Cuddyer ROS?
Well, I can't drop the guy nearly leading the NL in home runs... and I would take Cuddy over Kippy ROS... I know everyone loves the rookies, but Cuddyer is pretty safe.
EK, do you let this Chris Johnson contract dispute affect your ranking of him at all?
Nope. I was already considering Jamaal Charles over Johnson in the first place, but the furthest I would drop CJ is to 4. He's going to play. It's like the NFL lockout... the Titans can't be this stupid.
Hi Eric. David Huff has pitched very well in his limited time up, but there won't be room for him once Carrasco comes back. Would Cleveland go to a 6 man rotation, or is Huff the odd man out?
Haven't heard an update on Carrasco lately, but Huff also shouldn't have a sub-1.00 ERA for long. I would assume no on the 6-man rotation - it makes no sense for any team, really - but I also wouldn't invest in Huff.
NL only, ROS: Allen Craig, Bryan Petersen, Jordan Schafer. thanks!
Certainly looks like Peterson - aka the guy that replaced LoMo on LF for Florida - is going to play, and the others not so much.
Got Blount and McCoy as keepers with a flex position. Do I automatically take best available WR or look at RB if someone decent falls like Bradshaw or Best? .5 PPR
I take the best available, and if it's Bradshaw or Best, so be it. You can never have enough RBs, and if you can play 3 of them, make sure you have at least 4 you like.
Hey big fan. In my fantay league was it a bad idea to trade Adrian Peterson for Felix Jones and Miles Austin?
Yeah, I think that was a bad idea.
Even though you are terrible, you are useful for applying the Costanza method, doing the opposite.
Love the jealousy. And no, sucking up won't get you hired.
I feel like Rivers > Rodgers this season....what do you think?
I don't see why Rodgers would take a large step backward, but I do have Rivers at No. 5 at QB. It's a bit about value, though. If you think this, then wait until round 4 or so to get Rivers. Makes sense.
Eric...you were somewhat high on Span's return. I was really hoping he could help my deep AL-only team but now there are questions about his season...thoughts?
Clearly isn't healthy, which is not what we had heard when he first came back. When the actual player claims he might shut it down, awful sign. Look elsewhere.
bobby parnell vs. david martinez- who gets more SVs?
Sadly, because the Mets haven't got a clue, it's Parnell. I'm OK with Parnell closing had the Mets given him the job when K-Rod was dealt, but to arbitrarily do so only when Izzy gets his 300th save - as if that's a special number - is just ridiculous. Serves the Mets right... Parnell has been awful the past month, but he's going to get chances, and Hernandez is a fill-in guy only.
EK u startin' Ubaldo tonite? thx!
If you have him, use him. Not like this is a terrifying matchup.
Which unheralded #2 WR do you see breaking into fantasy lineups this year? Perhaps one of the Cardinals receivers?
Sure, it could be Arizona's Andre Roberts. I just chose him minutes ago in a deep mock draft. Love Kolb....
Football keeper...keeping both Brees and Vick, and needing a WR, trading Brees for Nicks. Smart move?
Yes. Very wise move. I like Brees over Vick, but I don't expect too many others to agree with it.
Thoughts on Mike Thomas this year (12 team ppr league)?
Have a feeling Jacksonville will be just awful this season, and you won't want any part of the passing game. Thomas is their best WR, but 50 catches?
Does anybody here think Jeremy Maclin is a safe pick even though he has mono?
Well, we still don't know for sure what his problem is, but the Eagles don't seem too worried. I haven't taken Maclin yet in any leagues, but I have a feeling by later this week this situation will be settled.
Since neither the Phillies or Reds have played this week, I'm allowed to substitute Hamels for Homer Bailey...should I make the move?
Yes. I have mixed feelings about Homer, but even if Hamels misses the week - and we haven't heard that - then you might be happy when Bailey gets lit up.
Football! Thoughts on Lance Kendricks is a nice sleeper option at TE this year?
I believe I wrote that exact thing today! Can't rank him in top 15 yet, but we shall see.
Does DMC's orbital bone break worry you since he has an injury-prone label anyways, or was that a fluke? Couldn't he vie for top 5 RB honors?
The eye thing is a fluke, but knowing him a hamstring or something is coming soon. Yes, in theory McFadden could be one of the best, but don't we know he'll miss time?
In a PPR league is McFadden>Forte?
I would take Forte in a PPR. Definitely.
Gaby Sanchez ROS?
Past the time to sell the way he's been hitting. I thought he could play well all season...
Kelly Johnson or Kipnis ROS?
Still Kelly Johnson for me... rookies are dangerous, people.
better marlin ROS anibal or javier?
Vazquez has been better of late, but I'd stick with Sanchez.
Jacoby is a monster. That is all.
He sure is. Didn't stop Yankees fans from saying Granderson is the AL MVP over Ellsbury when I blogged it last week. Heck, even Red Sox fans argued that it couldn't be Ellsbury, that it had to be Adrian Gonzalez because of the RBIs. Just ridiculous.
Mark Ingram or Jahvid Best?
Not a fan of either... Rookies or brittle players. I'd go Best.
Should I trade Ben Roethlisberger? My other QB is Joe Flacco.
Well, I would trade Flacco. I like Roethlisberger better. Depends on the deal.
Trying to sort out my cheatsheet, how would you rank Ryan Grant, Best, Felix Jones?
OK, I would go Best, Jones and then Grant.
When all is said and done Mike Stanton will be a better player than Jason Heyward?
I don't think so, but for this season it's not even close. Heyward has been awful. Next year when his shoulder is fixed he should be good... but don't take anything from Stanton. Could hit 40 homers one of these years.
Hey Eric, if you were to miss out on Brees, Vick, Rodgers, Brady and Rivers....would you wait mid-to-late rounds to ride on potential or go with someone like Manning/Ben/Romo earlier?
I'd probably take Schaub or Ben in round 6/7. Depends on the RB/WR depth to some degree, too. Just got Matt Ryan in our latest mock, and it was really late.
Desmond Jennings is a top ___ OF next yearEric Hosmer is a top ___ 1B next yearBrett Lawrie is a top ___ 3B next year
That's 3 questions! OK, Jennings 24, Hosmer 12, Lawrie 11.
Why is M.Leake so low in the daily notes against the Nats? I thought I was definitly going to start him at the beginning of the week now im not to sure.
I'd trust yourself. Use Daily Notes and everything we write as a guide, and perhaps it sways you if we make good points. But always trust your gut.
Lackey vs Tampa tommorow. Who wins?
The hitters. Easily.
Go Eagles! my RBs are Best, Matthews and Felix and my WRs are Megatron, Nicks and Britt, with Romo at QB. Am I screwed?
Well, it started out positive... and then it wasn't. I wouldn't recommend that team as a clear-cut leader, but there is certainly some RB upside. And the WRs could be awesome.
The fact that me and my buddies made Merriman look great doesn't worry you about Forte?
Are you talking about a preseason game? Puh-leeze. Couldn't mean any less. I'm serious.
Do you like any of the following WRs as a late-round flier: Mason, Breaston, Owens, Cribbs
Thinking about Cribbs ... and Breaston should at least be usable. Mason in PPR...
The one team the Phillies dont want to play is _________.
The Giants. No question. Phillies fans should root for Arizona...
Eli Manning has thrown for 4000+ yards each of the past two years, and has averaged 29 TD per season. Why is he ranked so far behind guys like Romo and Shaub for auction purposes? Or behind Freeman at all?
The interceptions. They're plentiful. But I will say I have Eli on a few teams and think there's nothing wrong with him. At least he doesn't get hurt.
Hitting Avila 8th in their lineup seems to be hurting thier production. Lots of rallys end before him and he seems to be left on base a lot. Do you see Detroit moving him up higher in the order next season?
He's one of the top 5 catchers in fantasy for the entire season. I'd say leave him alone and let him hit... but yeah, he could hit 5th or 6th.
better flier, Greg Little or Dexter McCluster?
Little could actually start for the Browns. Go with him.
Rauch on the DL means Frankie is the guy in Toronto now, yes?
Sure looks that way. Rauch is on with appendicitis, of all things. Would have been nice had he told trainers last night before he lost the game. Francisco is a closer again.
Arencibia has been killing my avg all year, but the bombs have made him rosterable... However, I am now thinking about dropping him for Doumit. Your thoughts?
Can't say for sure how many at-bats Doumit will get, but yeah, he's not likely to hit .200.
I went with my gut and plugged in Niemann AND Bedard for tonights game. Please tell me everything is going to be OK!!!
Everything is going to be OK. (But you might not like your ERA tomorrow.)
How do you feel about TMR's theory about drafting a stud QB in the first round?
I don't agree, but I respect the opinion. There are many ways to win a fantasy league. To me, it's easier to load up on RB/WRs.
Thoughts on Jordy Nelson? I've heard everything from breakout year to barely draftable. Is there a more enigmatic player than him this year?
Well, yeah, about 20 running backs are more enigmatic, the Broncos QBs, Jermichael Finley... I see your point, but just looking at the Packers depth chart I don't see how he could be THAT good...
when should i pick up greg little in the draft
Round 1. Awesome pick. (How about Round 12.)
What do you think about picking up McNabb as a backup QB? You think he'll have a breakout season like Favre did his first year with the Vikes?
No, I do not think he will have a breakout season at age 35, but if he's your backup you need him for one week. No problem with it if you already have a top QB.
Seems everyone is significantly down on Ryan Grant this year. Is that because of Starks, re-injury concerns, or just plain talent concerns?
All of the above. It's a bit of a stretch to assume Grant just returns to his old ways. He's got competition. And he's a year older.
If I go heavy on RB's and WR's early, are you comfortable with a J.Freeman/E.Manning type of QB combo?
Absolutely. Nothing wrong with a pair of top 12 options.
Where is Choo on your OF rankings for next year?
Can't be in my top 20. Probably in the 25-30 range along with fellow disappointment Jayson Werth.
Bonifacio or J. Guzman ROS? Looks like Bonifacio is back to earth.
Guzman clearly has more pop.
You touching anyone in Seattle? Uh, I mean are you drafting anyone on the Seahawks?
There's a proper round for Lynch, Rice and Zach Miller, for sure. Miller is the only one I'd be starting though.
I just dropped Kendrick for Raburn...am I crazy?
Nope. Based on second half splits it makes perfect sense.
BASEBALL Q - Chipper, Blanks or Venable for the short term at my utility slot?
I like Venable, personally. He runs.
Which qb to keep between Vick and Brees? Much more upside to Vick, but much safer with Brees.
Exactly. And I will go with the safe choice that won't miss games. But I also rank them 2 and 4, so neither is a bad choice.
In a league where TD passes are worth 6 pts, do you reach a little bit more for a top option? I know that *every* QB's value goes up, but guys who throw more TDs are clearly worth more, right?
Sure, but it changes every year. I don't overrate the QBs because there is a lot of depth. I mean, nobody ever wants Eli... he's fine. At 6 points or 4.
Braylon Edwards or Lance Moore?
Fantasy hockey season is approaching. (OK, Braylon. I mean, Alex Smith can't be that bad again, right?)
you really think I'm worthy to start in Sea or should my owners make a trade to upgrade?
Made my top 10. So yeah, I think it.
Loving this position ranking. Heyward a top 15 OF next year?
Probably in that range.
Where does Foster fall in your RB rankings? Think he can repeat last years performance?
Currently second, but could fall to fourth if the hammy is a problem. He's got a month.
Hi Eric, I hold the 7th spot in a PPR league (w/ 6pts for passing td) and am debating on taking Vick there with the rationale that he is not only a qb but almost acts as an rb2 as well. Should I roll with him at that spot? Thanks!
Well, I don't concur with the rationale, but it's your team. Vick isn't going to catch passes, so the PPR part doesn't matter there. But he is going top 10 in many leagues... just not to me.
If you're a Mathews owner, are you trading for Tolbert if you missed him in the draft? Also, who is the back to own- Hightower or Torain? Thanks!
No. What are you going to do, play Mathews and Tolbert at the same time? Waste of a pick. Mathews will emerge. And Torain is the one to own, but each week he's hurt Hightower becomes safer to use.
Seems like people either love or hate Shonn Greene this year...which camp are you in EK?
It's fantasy football, not personal, so I refrain from words like love or hate, especially the latter. I think Greene will have a strong season and he's going too late in drafts.
with Tavaris Jackson starting? I mean what's my ceiling? Sea barely threw to the TE at all last year...why am I top 10?
What Seattle did last year couldn't be more irrelevant. Whole new cast of characters. Miller is a talented fellow, he'll force the Seahawks to look his way.
Drop Hosmer to pick up Francisco?
I'd have to either be desperate for saves or deep at 1B/corner. In a vaccuum no, I keep Hosmer.
Did Marcedes Lewis make your top ten at TE? Also, have you posted your fantasy football rankings anywhere?
Lewis is currently at No. 7, and no. It's not because I didn't want to.
10 Team PPR. 7th pick. Would you be happy going into round 3 with Roddy and Larry Fitz?
I'd be happier with one of them and a great running back, but sure. It's nice.
Just joined the chat, so if you talked about this already, then sorry....but, thoughts on MJD. I have heard he is cutting good at full speed, and S. Bell said she is not concerned about his knee. What's your take on him...take him as RB1 on the cheap in an auction, or go with a bigger name and cheaper RB2/3's?
I have him ranked 6th overall, so I obviously trust he will be good to go. But what he's doing today almost doesn't matter for 6 weeks from now. We know he's had knee problems. He could easily get hurt again. But I do like him.
Bobby Parnell worth a pick up in a 12 team mixer?
Any closer is worth owning in a 12-team mixer. So it appears he'll get chances, yes.
QBs deep, TEs deep, so you just load up on RBs and WRs? What's you "luxury" pick you splurge on?
None. I mean, I keep doing the same things and it works. I guess the odd luxury pick is I've been grabbing top defenses in round 12 or so. If someone else starts the run, I'll get in it because I don't want a non-top 10 D.
I'm the new girl in my ppr league and have the #1 pick. The Vikings OLine is terrible and AP doesn't catch that many passes, should I go Foster or Rice instead. Thanks.
I'd go with Peterson... but that's probably not what you wanted to hear.
You guys have one more mock draft?
Oh yeah. At least one more. Like every week now!
Is granderson a 1st rounder in 2012? If not, how close is he?
He didn't make my top 10 recently, but I'd say late second makes sense.
Eric: Fowler or JD Martinez for rest of season? SB's not imperative
Still Dex. Can't really trust a rookie that skipped Triple-A to be a safe hitter.
Would you draft Gates with a 4th round pick?
Nope. But I realize others will. I draft the tight ends late.
I know your staff is down on MJD this season but he fell to me at pick #16. Has the hate gone too far and I should scoop him up here at great value or are you recommending just stay away altogether (overworked, injury risk)?
If he drops past the top 7 or 8, I pounce. That's a bit crazy.
So according to you, if my whole draft is petrified of MJD and he falls to me in the 2nd, I pounce? 10 teams.
You got it.
I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you on the "clutch" and "rbi" front.... some players have a knack for either hyping themselves up more for a big at bat, or calming themselves down better than other players, nerves play a huge factor in "clutch" and "rbi" factors, i think you neglect this important facet of all sports... some guys handle big situations better than others
OK, you are entitled to your opinion... but I disagree. RBIs are a product of opportunity. And there's no such thing as clutch. Doesn't exist.
What are your predictions for Larry Fitz since your so high on Kolb?
Probably a borderline top 5 WR. Kolb will throw for 3,800 yards.
I have daydreams where I can draft MJD in the second round....
A lot of ethics questions at 11am.. How about if you have held on to the #1 waiver priority, as a reward shouldn't you be able to do a drop and pick up (trade) with the team who has #2
What? No, no rewards.
Is Luobke safe ROS?
Yeah, I'm a fan. Pitching well away from Petco...
If in my league a TD Pass is 6pts, should my first pick be a qb?
No. No. No. But it's your team. Is it 6 points for all the league teams or just you?
You think Steven Jackson will have a renaissance year under mcdaniels?
Not really. But in the second round you gotta take someone to run the ball.
If Michael Vick fell to you at _____ overall, you would pick him.
If my top 3 QBs were off the board I'd consider it. But I'm just more likely to avoid the top 6 QBs and take Schaub/Roethlisberger in the seventh round or wait even more for Freeman, Eli, Ryan.
You have the 10/11 or 12/13 pick in a league where you have to start 3 WR, 2 RB and a flex. If you've got say a Gore/Turner combo staring you in the face, do you take it and run? Or are you too worried that with starting 3 WR, the options available when the draft gets back to you will be too diluted?
I'm far more worried that the RBs dry up before the WRs. I've seen it in every draft I've done this season.
If A.Rogers fell to you at _____ overall, you would pick him.
If I have Matt Ryan and McFadden as keepers and my options in the first round are Rodgers or Mendenhall who do I pick?
The running back. Why do you want 2 QBs?
Mike Carp or Josh Willingham? I'm looking for a little pop and RBIs to slip into my utility spot.
Gotta say Carp the way he's going.
It would be great to see a mock auction draft!
In my auction draft, I got both Brees and Brady. Which one do I trade, and which one do I keep?
You trade the one someone else wants so much they make the best offer.
Collie or Manningham
Definitely Manningham. He's emerging...
OK, so that's about all the time we have for this fine Tuesday. Thank you for the questions, enjoy your drafts and have a great day!
