What's up, everybody? Let's get started. What's on your mind?
Why are Aggie fans ignoring the on-field implications of Texas A
I don't think they are. I think A&M fans and the media in general just see the future in the SEC playing out differently. However, a word to the A
How will Josh Gordon's (WR) departure affect Baylor's team receiving options?
Big hit. Big, big hit. I've been a big advocate for Gordon's talents all offseason, and he was due for a big year. He's an NFL-type talent with size you can't reproduce. Baylor's receiving corps is deep, but no question, they needed Gordon. Not good.
What team in the Big 12 team will be suprisingly better than anticipated this season?
Well, I'd generally say Missouri, but it has to prove it can adapt to losing Elvis Fisher. That's huge, especially for a team with a young QB.
I hear talk of where all the other schools other than Baylor would end up if conference realignment occurs. What happens to Baylor? Will we get left in the dust? CUSA? Any chance we stay in a BCS conference?
I do believe the Big 12 will stay together in some form if A&M leaves, so for now, I wouldn't worry too much. However, if Larry Scott and Oklahoma start having serious conversations, it might be time to worry.
Assuming TAMU leaves for the SEC, K-State's AD Currie suggested the remaining Big XII members move proactively. Do you envision the remaining Big XII schools coming together to push Texas out and bring in some new schools to refill the ranks?
Ha. No. The Big 12 should (futilely, but necessarily) try and talk Notre Dame and Arkansas into coming. Mostly just due diligence. But BYU is the first realistic option. If I had to guess, I think it will rebuff the Big 12's advances and the league would end up adding Houston out of necessity.
Ubbs, while I have been happy to finally get some talk going about A&M moving to the SEC, I've been disappointed with the extreme lack of Johnny Manziel coverage. Seriously, what gives?
Haha, I finally got to see him up close yesterday in practice. Safe to say, he's got a ways to go before he's a factor in the A&M QB race. I love A
I watched the Erin Andrews interview with Kirk Bohls and my small amount of optimism for the Horns getting 7-8 wins just went out the door. Do you think McCoy and/or Ash are ready? What are you hearing?
I do think Texas will still end up struggling at QB, but I don't believe it will do worse than 7-8 wins. Texas had more problems than just QB last year, and some of those are easier to fix.
Can I get my subscription to K-StateHD.tv comp'd?
I'm unsure if the service has exemptions for men that the stadium is named after. I'll ask around and get back to you.
If the Big XII collapses and K-State goes to the MWC (as some have suggested), how would K-State fare?
Better than Texas A&M in the SEC.
Follow-up: How long of a leash will Major and Brian give either one of the starters?
A short one, I'm assuming. Have to after last year.
Did you play football growing up? Any other sports?
Did growing up. Basketball/golf in high school. Four-year starter at QB on the flag football gridiron. Came in fifth in the Heisman voting back in '08 actually. Unfortunately, they didn't invite me to the ceremony in NYC.
Hi David. Big fan of your blog and I really enjoy the good work you produce. My question is this: If/when A&M moves to the SEC, do you think that the annual rivalry game with TU will still be around (taking into consideration both school's feelings on the change)?
At this point, I think it has to. A&M has made their feelings on the matter crystal clear, and I'm not sure Texas wants to weather the PR disaster that would be ending that series with A
BYU to the Big 12?
I think most of the fans across the Big 12 would wholeheartedly support that.
How bad do you think OkState whips A&M on Sept.24?
Meh. It'll be a toss-up, but I'll take A&M in a close one there for now. I actually picked the Aggies to win last year's game in Stillwater, something like 31-30.
David, grad school has brought me far from the Big 12 and deep into SEC country. Please bring me some good news and tell me that the BIG XII can stop the SEC's quest for six straight BCS championships! Also, will OSU make it to a BCS game this year?
If you're hoping for that to end, you better jump on the Sooner Schooner. As for OSU? More likely that Texas A&M ends up in the BCS, but we'll find out on Sept. 24. Rumor has it the BCS will formally invite the winner of that game with a grandiose postgame presentation. IT WILL BE OFFICIAL.
Will Phil B. have a "DeRuyter-like" turn around with the Baylor D this year?
Not quite, but they'll be better. Baylor has the athletes. Not the kind of athletes DeRuyter had to work with, but the Bears won't be lacking for speed or athletic ability. That goes a long way.
I heard that the Aggies are planning to take their toys to a different sandbox. Doesn't Sherm know these distractions sap the players? Vegas has us as a 13 point fav over the Aggs what with all the SEC mumbo gumbo. What say Dr. Ubben?
I really think A&M has done a good job saying (and not saying) all the right things through all this when it comes to players and coaches. They're basically calling it a non-factor. Considering most of the major contributors on this year's team wouldn't even be affected by a move, and fall camp is so engrossing, it's not surprising that it's not a huge concern. Everyone in camp basically keeps saying the only three letters on their mind are S-M-U.
I'm not trying to suck up or anything, but I will miss you if my Ags go to the SEC. What are the chances of A&M going? I'm think 60% go 40% stay.
Much higher than 60 percent at this point.
What would you say the chances are that KState reaches a bowl game this year?
Lower than 60 percent.
The departure of Josh Gordon from the Baylor football team...will this push them back in irrelevancy?
No. Big loss, but not that big. The only loss that could do that is Griffin III.
What was your overall impression of the A&M defense?
Fast. Physical. Deep. Will be among the Big 12's best for sure.
You really need to get espn to fix the whole double & issue.
Sorry about that. Here's the rest of the answer I think was cut off. "At this point, I think it has to. TAMU has made their feelings on the matter crystal clear, and I'm not sure Texas wants to weather the PR disaster that would be ending that series with TAMU.
Exactly how would A&M benefit by going to the SEC?
Well, the theory is that it could outrecruit Texas, be a title contender in the SEC and eventually emerge as the top program in Texas. This, of course, is debatable. Unless you ask the Aggies. To suggest that this might happen is proof that you're a soulless windbag sent to earth solely to hold down Texas A&M's football program.
To suggest that this might NOT happen, that is. Whoops.
What's the o/u on questions you receive that do not pertain to realignment?
It's about 70 percent realignment these days.
What about the Raiders, Dave? WHAT ABOUT THE RAIDERS!?!?!?
Ha. I think Tech will be fine. Football program has made big strides in the last decade.
Is there anything else to talk about OTHER than A&M and TX? Any good, positive, or uplifting news from the B12 this week?
Nope. Not really, unless you want to talk about two of the league's stars going down with injury.
Do you think adding Houston to the Big 12 is a realistic possibility? I thought the NCAA already ruled out high schools being televised on conference and team networks.
Question of the day. Touche, Joe.
David, My Jr year I smoked Malcolm Brown's HS stats. I'm 5'9" and 205#'s. You think I'm easy to tackle? Texas' Gray looks like a paper doll on first hit. Where's that Ubben Lovin' I deserve over the Texas recruits?
News flash: Oklahoma State has really good running backs. Texas does not. If Sims was on Texas and Brown was on Oklahoma State, you might see their roles reversed.
Ampersands Ubben, ampersands. If this chat is going to be as AnM-centric as it has been so far, using something other than an ampersand will make it much less choppy.
I will try my best. It's too natural.
Would OU be better off in a further watered down Big 12 (assuming A&M leaves) or the Pac 12?
Debatable on a lot of levels. Depends on what you're talking about. There's more money in the Pac-12. No doubt about that. But is it worth sacrificing a possible competitive advantage, or sacrificing long-standing rivalries? That conversation may have to happen soon.
How many wins would the Ags have in the SEC West this year?
I'm not going to throw that number out there, but I would like to offer a friendly reminder that the fifth-place team in the division went 9-4 in 2010 and beat Michigan by 38 points in its bowl game.
Is there net positive for the State of Texas if A&M leaves for the SEC? If so, is it more than just money?
I'm pretty skeptical of that report that came out yesterday. If you can guarantee that Houston is admitted into the Big 12 (which is a humongous if) and guarantee the Big 12 survives (a much smaller if), I'd imagine you could make a solid case that the net could be positive in Texas with an additional team earning AQ conference status.
I seem to notice that more than one blogger/analyst?/guys who are SUPPOSED to know what they're talking about say that Arkansas is someone the Big Xii are going to talk to if A&M leaves... why would a team who left the SWC to get away from Texas leave the SEC to go to a weakened Big Xii?
Not going to happen. Arkansas will never, ever leave the SEC for the Big 12. But it never hurts to ask.
When A&M leaves for the SEC, is there a chance that Arizona and Arizona State would make the switch to the Big 12?
I was driving that ship awhile back, but with the new Fox Sports TV deal and the launching of the regional networks, that ship has sailed.
Ubbs, can you see Texas Tech coming out of left field and have a ten win season? Why or why not.
Yeah, it's possible. Same reason as Oklahoma State last year. Maturing defense and unknown offensive talent. What if Seth Doege is the next Brandon Weeden and Alex Torres goes off? Or Marcus Kennard has a 1,000-yard season? I don't think it'll happen, but you can't rule it out.
Mr. Ubben....Year two of Coach Gill's tenor...will it be better than the first or same as the worst? Who is our QB going to be?
Significantly better than the first. KU is a lot faster. Jordan Webb will start the season, but don't be surprised if Michael Cummings or Brock Berglund get a shot at some point.
so do Texas a&m fans realize they sound like a bratty kid who needs a whipping and nap? You don't like Texas beat em on the field and let that do the talking, if confused call Norman....
Don't think I agree with that first part, but the second part has a little bit of merit. However, the A&M-UT rivalry is pretty close to even the last few decades.
Why would BYU join B12? they just went independent.
Access to BCS games would be the main sell, one would think.
What is the last piece of the puzzle for Sherman to get it really rolling?
Don't see a big piece missing for the Ags. Just have to continue getting better everywhere.
What sort of timeline are we looking at for an A&M move to the SEC?
I think the Ags would like to do it tomorrow. The SEC is taking a bit more of a deliberate approach, it would seem. My guess it it's decided one way or another by the end of the month, but it's possible it goes longer.
Just admit it. The media doesn't want an A&M brand to become valueable. That is what the problem really is. A
It's true. How did you hear about our nationwide media meetings to decide that Texas A&M will never become a great football brand. It's up to us in the media to make sure it never happens. Stop telling people about it!
any word out of Sooner camp on how Landry is looking this year? Is he gonna pick up right where he left off?
Haven't heard much either way. Sounds like it's business as usual.
A few more questions before we wrap up.
Flip the coin around, What do you beleive TAMU has to gain by staying in the Big XII?
More frequent appearances in the BCS. More natural rivalries. And I don't believe the Big 12 is as unstable as Texas A&M apparently does. I don't see Texas going independent any time soon. Texas A
Where would NU finish in this years Big 12?
How did Tannehill look, got little nervous when you mentioned he threw that pick six.
He was fine. It was one play in a scrimmage. Looked really good, especially without his top receiver.
So when are you going to pick and answer actual football questions?
When more people start asking them.
Did NCAA 12 spark all of this conference realignment? If so when can we see the institution of more WRs at QB and a plethora of scrambling rollouts?
Runner-up for question of the day. Awesome.
What did you think about Perryman's "economic impact" analysis for A&M leaving the Big 12? Seemed pretty spot-on to me.
Haha. Glad you enjoyed it, Mr. Starr. Looked a bit presumptuous and hyperbolic to me.
Mr. Ubben, would you be so kind as to inform us all of what YOU would do in the current situation which Dan Beebe so unfortunately must deal with?
Hmm, interesting question. Not sure there's much Beebe can do. A&M's mind is made up, it would seem. Work on a contingency plan. The only way this falls through, in my opinion, is if the SEC can't agree on a 14th team in the future and that gives the league's members pause to admitting A
UT / BYU Sept 10 - who you taking?
Thanks for all the questions. See you all again next week.
