Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:55 AM)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to a very special Tuesday edition of the Yankees live chat, from beautiful Kansas City, Mo. we'll get underway right at noon so bring your A game.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Joe Girardi should put A.J. Burnett in the Bull Pen since he has been Absolutely Stinky the last 6 games?

Wallace Matthews
  (11:58 AM)

Hey, Chris. I do not. I don't think he's tempermantally suited to come out of the pen, especially in the middle of an inning with runners on base. I think he's got to stay in the rotation because frankly, there's nothign else you can do with him. The same pretty much goes for Garcia and Nova, who's never really come out of the pen.Unfortunately, Hughes is going to have to be the one to go simply because he did it pretty well in 2009.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Which Current New York Yankees Players do you think will be in the Hall Of Fame when they Retire?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:01 PM)

Rivera and Jeter, definitely. Posada maybe. A-Rod would have been a lock without the steroid revelations. Teixeira has potential and of course, so does Sabathia. If Andruw Jones makes it to 500 HRs he might join the conversation, too

Eric (Boston)

Any update on who the 5 starters are going to be the next few weeks? On a related note, can you send me some of what Cashman has in his objectivity pipe? I like AJ but I need a pick me in the 5th inning of his starts.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:03 PM)

i think we all need to take a hit off what the GM was smoking last week. Right now, Freddy's injury has solved Girardi's problem, at least once more through the rotation. My guess is ultimatelt, it will be Hughes who goes to the bullpen because as I've pointed out many times, none of the other 5 are suited for relief work.

Keith (Cleveland)

Should the Indians move top prospect Jason Kipnis from 2B to SS in anticipation of Jeter's retirement or will Jeter retire in time for the Yankees to acquire Indians current SS, Asdrubal Cabrera?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:04 PM)

Keith, Jeter's not going anywhere until he absolutely has to. I firmly believe he thinks he will be getting another contract when this one expires after 2013, and the way he's hitting right now, I wouldn't bet against it. As to your question regarding Justin Masterson, he becomes arbitration eligibile after next year, so he could wind up in the Bronx sooner than you think

Gavin (New York)

Is Cashman really serious when he says that we probably will not see banuelos this year? Also when rosters expand in September, who are the likley prospects to be called up?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:06 PM)

IDK, but I can tell you this.. Everything Cashman has said this year has turned out to be true regarding the trade deadline so I don;t think he is a liar. However, I do think Banuelos will be among the sept. callups, as will Montero and Betances and maybe Jorge Vazquez

Rick (Monmouth Beach)

What was Girardi's explanation for having Jeter sacrifice Gardner to second without first giving Gardner a chance to steal, instead of wasting an out (especially when Jete is hot right now)?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:07 PM)

I must admit most of the post-game talk centered on AJ and the subject never came up. that's what happens when the team winds up winning. things that seemed very important in the first inning are forgotten by the end of the game. my guess is jeter was bunting on his own. If i remember I'll ask both of them about it this afternoon when the clubhouse opens

Anthony (Orlando, FL)

Hey Wally,Montero can be a major contributor in September, but more importantly in October. How will Girardi fit him in with Chavez, Jones, Arod coming off surgery and now Posada back in the mix? If he's brought up, I think he needs to play everyday in order for us to find out what he's really made of as opposed to throwing him in there every 3 days. Nobody can get into a rhythm that way, don't you agree?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:09 PM)

yes, which is why I think the Yankees have resisted calls to bring him up all year. It is not going to be easy to find ABs for him and I can tell you right now, he's not catching unless some disaster befalls Martin and Cervelli. i think they will bring him up along with Banuelos and Betances just to give them a taste of what it;s like in the late stages of a pennant race -- they did it last year with Brackman -- but I doubt they'll get very much playing time, if any

Dick (Blueballs,PA)

Wally why do the Yankees continue to play with fire. Dont you think it is time 2 cut ties with AJ. I no Cash says 4 everyone 2 get off his back but look at the numbers i would rather take my chances with Hughes or one of the killer Bs.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:11 PM)

There's no way they're going to swallow $33 million and let this guy walk. Not even the Yankees can eat that much cash. and i must admit, I agree with some of what Cashman said, specifically that in several games, AJ pitched well and deserved better than what he got. Yes, he's unreliable and maddening, but he'll still likely win 12 games this year.

Bartolo Colon (Bronx,NY)

Hey Wally I told you if the Yankees had gotten Ubaldo i would of ate him like a hot dog,bye the way i am gunna enter next years hot dog eating contest will help improve my covering first better.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:12 PM)

you could probably do that and pitch the same night. Who you guys playing next July 4?

Matt (NC)

Hey Wallace, is there anyone from the Charleston affiliate with potential to make the show? I know Gary Sanchez has been touted. Saw a series w/ them and I liked the leadoff hitter - I think his name was Sosa. Thanks!

Wallace Matthews
  (12:14 PM)

The Yankees have high hopes for Sanchez, but he doesn;t even turn 19 until December. The guy you;re referring to is Eduardo Sosa and he is a bona fide prospect. Other than those two, I must plead ignorance. got too much to worry about with the big club

Alex (New York)

What kind of chance do we have of seeing Curtis win the MVP?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:16 PM)

I think he should have a very strong chance since I think you can make the case that without him, the yankees are much further back in the AL East race and maybe even struggling for the WC. Without A-Rod, Granderson has provided a ton of power and is a run-scoring machine. However, with the exception of A-Rod in 07, it seems like MVP voters tend to discount the influence of any one player in the Yankees lineup, which is not only unfair, but inaccurate.

Nick (NJ)

Thoughts on A.J's new hair??

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

looks good on him. I guess

Chris (Mamaroneck)

what are your thoughts on Zambrano (if he's avaliable at a low number with the cubs picking up most of the salary) and Kazmir as spring training invites to be the next colon/garcia

Wallace Matthews
  (12:18 PM)

if the Yankees, and specifically Larry Rothschild, thought Zambrano's talent was worth the money and the risk of his erratic temperment in their clubhouse, he's already be here. Kazmir is so injury-prone he'd probably be a bigger longshot than the two old guys, but I could see him as a non-roster invite

Jeff (CT)

Is there really a right answer to the rotation right now? Who stays, who goes, 6 or 5 man, etc?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:20 PM)

We'll only know if there is a "right" answer after the fact and obviously we've all got an opinion onb who should be in and who should be out. My best rotation is CC, Bartolo, Nova, Freddy, AJ wth Hughes in the pen

Eric (SI,NY)

Besides Igawa what in your opinion are the worst contracts ever by the Yankees?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

I thought Giambi was a bad contract, and Kevin Brown immediately comes to mind. Jeter's and CC's could still backfire on them and A-Rod's contract could turn out to be the worst of them all

Tony (Scranton,PA)

Wally why dont the yankees just cut ties with Posada instead of playing these head games and wasting a roster spot. imean i understand the whole yankee tradition thing but cmon man

Wallace Matthews
  (12:23 PM)

I agreed 100 percent with you last week but Posada has made it tough for them by starting to hit again. I don;t think Cashman is particularly swayed by "Yankee tradition" -- he thinks that means winning ballgames and World Series -- and he certainly isn;t afraid of taking the heat for tough calls. I just think right now, Posada is hot enough that whatever the yankees were thinking of doing with him is on hold for the time being

ASN (NY)

Why can't the Yankees keep their 6 man rotation, only allowing movement among the pitchers so CC continues to pitch every 5th game? When necessary, have the guy with the most rest (except Burnett, maybe) be available in the bullpen.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

it's possible but it's difficult to manage and takes guys like Burnett out of thier regular routines, which drives him nuts. (It used to drive M Mussina nuts, too. Some pitchers are like that). I think at some point, GIJoe will have to make the tuf call and settle on 5

Brian (Minneapolis)

Wally -- twin cities are axiously awaiting your arrival later this week. Of the Core 4 and some of the other dynasty players (Bernie, O'Neill), which winds up with their number retired in Monument Park?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

Thanks brian. I always enjoy being there. Jeter and Mo, of course, probably Posada and Pettite and maybe Bernie. The problme is, they've retired so many numbers they might have to go to Roman numerals or a letter system to ID players

Joe (Portland,ME)

A.J. Burnett was winless in August with the Yankees. Not anymore.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

obviously you read my column today. Thanks!

Heather (Queens,NY)

wally i think you r hot n sexy u stud of a beat writer.

Wallace Matthews

Thanks, mom

Wallace Matthews
