Chat with Farrell Evans

Cheesehead Sports Nut (@CheeseheadSN)

There are too many young players with enough talent to win Majors to list but whether they actually pull it off comes down to having the mental edge of being unflappable (i.e. Tiger Woods) or being super laid back (i.e. Rory McIlroy). I would put guys like Martin Kaymer in the unflappable group and Dustin Johnson in the super laid back group. Of the current crop of youth players who do you think fits in one of those two camps?

Greg (CA)

Was Freddy "asking" Tiger to play in another event before he names the President's Cup team or was he "telling" Tiger to play more?

farrell evans
  (2:10 PM)

Greg,He told Tiger to play in another event before he names him to the team.

Kevin (CT)

Well, Farrell, the new guy has to get the old question: Where do you think Tiger's game stands right now?

farrell evans
  (2:13 PM)

Kevin,It's hard to say. Tiger is working on his game with his instructor, Sean Foley. But I think his main problems are mental. Since he can't physically or technically do the things that he once did on the golf course, he has to learn how to think his way around the golf course. At the PGA I saw a guy who made a lot of unthinking decisions that cost him strokes and the cut.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (@CheeseheadSN)

Phil Michelson always keeps things interesting. It is amazing that Phil can pull off crazy shots and drain long putts but once he misses a short one he seems to miss a bunch of short putts in a row. Do you think it is a weird mental thing with Phil or something else?

farrell evans
  (2:18 PM)

Cheesehead,Phil works really hard on his lines to be able to make the most confident stroke. On the short ones he has a tendency though to hit them too firm. But it's certainly a mental thing. But let's not forget pros aren't that much better at making long putts than amateurs. It's inside 10 feet where the pros miss a lot less than we do.

Gary (GA)

How do you see the Barclays playing out this weekend?

farrell evans
  (2:21 PM)

Plainfield C.C. is a new course for all the players. The green complexes are very difficult but the landing areas off the tee are friendly. And it's not a long course. There is some rough but the course is pretty open. So I see one of the guys playing well like Webb Simpson or Luke Donald playing well here. There won't be any surprise winners or flukes.

Marc (Charlotte)

Christina Kim's name hasn't been near a leaderboard all year and yet she qualifies on points for the Solheim Cup team. Are there really that few quality women's players?

farrell evans
  (2:23 PM)

Marc, Kim shot 78 in the final round on Sunday and hadn't had a top 10 all year. But for a late surge at the end of last year, she wouldn't have her card. It's really sad that the American side is so thin that she would qualify. And trust me she'll play like someone who doesn't deserve to be on the team.

Marc (Charlotte)

Do you prefer to grill with charcoal or gas?

Willie (ATL)

Do you think Tiger obey's Couples and plays more to get a spot on the Cup team?

farrell evans
  (2:26 PM)

Willie,I think Tiger will do what's best for his game. I think when Couples said that he was just echoing what Tiger already knew was true and what they had discussed.

Steven (Texas)

Do you think the LPGA will survive? seems like they've had a hard time the last few years.

farrell evans
  (2:29 PM)

The LPGA Tour is a little business. It's always going to be a little business. So it shouldn't aspire to what the market doesn't make possible. It will survive if it makes its schedule proportional to the support that it gets from sponsorship and the TV networks. And not try to exceed its reach. That's business 101.

Willie (ATL)

So Couple's comments weren't out of the blue for Tiger? There shouldn't be any lingering issues for Tiger thinking Fred "called him out" or anything?

farrell evans
  (2:30 PM)

Willie,Initially I thought Fred was calling Tiger out, but they had been talking about this issue in the event that Tiger didn't make the Fedex Cup.

Greg (Houston)

What are Team USA's chances in the Cup this year?

farrell evans
  (2:32 PM)

Greg,Team USA is pretty good and loaded with a lot of winners. But they can get beat on any given day. The rest of the world is also pretty good.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Next Golfer to Retire from the PGA Tour?

farrell evans
  (2:33 PM)

It won't be Tiger Woods.

Jordan (MD)

Is it good or bad for the game that we've had so many different winners this year?

farrell evans
  (2:36 PM)

Jordan,Great for the game. I think we're talking about this because we have had so many different winners who aren't big names. Tiger, Phil, Furyk, Ernie and Vijayl have combined for 1 win. And that was Phil's win in Houston before the Masters. That's pretty amazing.

Darryl (CT)

What's the state of the PGA Tour? I know sports like NASCAR are hurting for sponsors. Is the PGA doing all right, business wise?

farrell evans
  (2:38 PM)

The Tour has a TV contract that's set to expire at the end of the 2012 season. It won't get the same money it got last time around when Tiger was the king of the world. But pro golf is outside of the competition glorified corporate outings. And last time I checked Wall Street was still in business and hospitality and marketing is a big part of that.

Harry (CO)

While I agree that it is good for the game to have all of these different winners, do you think the PGA needs to change up their marketing so we see these guys more? They were smart to put all of their eggs in the Tiger basket, but it seems those days of easy marketing are over.

farrell evans
  (2:41 PM)

Harry,Sadly, Tiger created a divide through his crossover appeal between his fans and the core golf fan who will watch anybody hit shots. That's a tough rift for the Tour to heal.

Owen (DC)

What does Rory need to do to put his game together and be one of the dominant players on tour? He's right on the cusp of that, I think we all see that.

farrell evans
  (2:43 PM)

Rory has to keep working. He's got all the tools and just needs to continue playing and getting more consistently into contention.

Connor Ketz (MOH)

I am a horrible golfer! Just thought I'd mention that

farrell evans
  (2:44 PM)

Connor,Most golfers are pretty horrible. But if you take lessons and practice and play from the appropriate tees for your level you will enjoy the game. I promise.

Freddie (AL)

Best golfer out there, in your opinion?

farrell evans
  (2:45 PM)

Luke Donald. He is the most consistent. That's what I favor even over wins.

Peter (RI)

Farrell, how has your first few weeks at ESPN gone? You've been leaving a good impression so far. I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

farrell evans
  (2:46 PM)

ESPN is a great place to reach a wide ranging and diverse golf audience. It's a demanding but fun place to work.

Aaron (LA)

What are your thoughts heading into the FedEx Cup this fall?

Kyle (VA)

How's your golf game?

farrell evans
  (2:51 PM)

It's good when I play. I'm a decent ball striker but a terribly inconsistent putter.

Phil (CA)

Do you think Bubba Watson can become a mulitple yearly winner on tour?

farrell evans
  (2:52 PM)

I just talked to Bubba earlier today. I like him a lot. He's a great talent. But I don't know if he will do the little things to win that much. Should it happen? Yes.

Gary (Houston)

Is Keegan Bradley an unlikely double winner on Tour this season?

farrell evans
  (2:54 PM)

Keegan Bradley is good but in a Rich Been sort of way. I don't want to judge too quickly, but I don't see from his game a consistent world beater.

Karen (NJ)

Y'all feel the earthquake?

farrell evans
  (2:54 PM)

Yes, we did. Sitting here in the media center and we started rocking.
