Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

Greetings folks. Nice of you to stop by...

Matt (Florida)

Hey Paul, not trying to be rude but, why all the hype for Houston and no JAX? JAX has a good team that has a good shot at winning the AFC South aswell. JAX had their worst season on D last year and was still only a couple games off from wiining the divison. Why no love for my Jags?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

So to clarify, you think I am hyping the Texans but not the Jags? Texans fans, please chime in. (One reason to prefer Houston is a stable, proven QB.)

Josh (Jacksonville)

Will Cecil Shorts make the starting line up, if not opening day then when?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

He should be third. With Mike Thomas and Jason Hill starting. That's been the plan.

A.T. (Greenville, NC)

I get really tired of hearing Jags "fans" get upset because Garrard is not an "elite" quarterback. So what? He takes a beating every game and still peels himself off the turf to play another down. That's something that most of these pretty boy "elite" quarterbacks can't do. It's been a long time since the Jags had an O-line that held their own. I know there's no stat for toughness, but why doesn't Garrard receive any credit for making some good things happen over the years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

So you think Peyton Manning has a good offensive line? They didn't draft tackles in the first and second round because they are good up front.

Jeff (Jax)

When I see the improvement in Alualu and Knighton, as well as the free agency signings in the back, it appears to me that the Jags defense will go from near dead last to respectable this year, perhaps rising to the high teens in the rankings. Am I wearing Jags-rose colored glasses?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

A reasonable expectation I share.

Kerry Collins (Indianapolis)

The Colts contacted me a little bit too late, don't you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I wrote it's been mismanaged and this should have happened three weeks ago.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Does the CJ thing have to get done, before the Titans finish up with Finnegan? MR said they had made an offer when Finny left practice in a huff.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

They made an offer. Finnegan was apparently insulted. Doesn't say anywhere they have kept talking, or need to.

seth (chicago)

Will CJ go as far to request a trade? Would the Titans even consider trading him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

He might. And I doubt it. Also, it would require an offer of value and a team that will give him the money he's looking for.

Landon (TX)

Minus Manning, the Colts look an awful lot like the Titans on paper. Is this the year that the inmates (Texans, Jags, Titans) take over the asylum (AFC South)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

He might not miss a game. He might miss one. He might miss six. We don't, and can't know. I know everyone wants to jump to conclusions and give the division to someone else, but we simply HAVE to wait and see what happens with Manning and his neck.

Tom (Nashville)

Is CJ worth mortgaging the future for or do we need to trade him and look to the future strength of the franchise?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Why would it be mortgaging the future to pay their best player big dollars in his prime?

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Bigger story week 2 of the regular season: Peyton Manning's Neck or Chris Johnson contract/possible trade demands?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Manning is bigger because he's better. But they are both big.

Brian Cashman (Bronx)

The past few drafts by the Colts havent been all that great and now with just two weeks till the season they get a more capable veteran QB in case Peyton cant go. They knew there was a chance Peyton wouldnt be ready so why wait so long? Also Why doesnt the front office get more criticism?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Yesterday I wrote that they mismanaged this quarterback situation and that Jim Irsay undermined Jim Caldwell, making him look weak. That's criticism, no? Also, Austin Collie, Jerraud Powers, Jacob Tamme, Pierre Garcon have been pretty good picks in last three drafts. Not as good start to finish as they have been and need to be, but not horrible either.

Matt (Mount Juliet, TN)

PK, I posted on a thread earlier about how much I think CJ and the Titans strike a new deal for (5-6 years, $55-$65 million, $35 million guaranteed). What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/26599/fiddling-with-chris-johnson-contract-math" target="_blank">Fiddling with Chris Johnson contract math</a>, Aug. 17

Miles (Nashville)

After having watched the Titan's practices are you impressed by Munchak's coaching style and do you believe that his style is better than Fisher's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

How could we possibly say better not having seen any game management? He's done very well so far and players are responding.

Will L (Knoxville TN)

Who do you see as the starting DL week one for the Titans. DEs are Ball, Ford, Jones, Morgan, Egbough and Hayes. DTs are Klug, Cassey, Clayton, Haye, Smith, and Marks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Jones, Smith, Klug or Casey, Hayes.

Jay in Spring (Houston, TX)

Matt, got news for you - the day that PK "hypes" up the Texans is the day that pigs have wings. You must not read his stuff much...:)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Thank you.

Adam (Nashville)

Is CJ worth the mess, it seems the Titans have good RB's, and the "playmaker" would hamstring a lot of other good work they could do next off season in the market. thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Once he signs, where is the mess?

Jay (Jax)

You think the new kickoff rule be a one-and-done rule we'll just have to endure for one year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I think people are overreacting. Watch. Some teams won't want to kick it into the end zones. Other teams won't want to down it. And as it gets cold, the ball won't travel as far. This is not the end of kickoff returns.

Fantasy sleeper (Not Matthew Berry)

Your thoughts on Delone Carter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Take him.

KingKev (TX)

Ive been asking you about Jared Cook for 2 years. I have to say he finally looks good. Could he receive the most targets this year from Hasselbeck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

He will be a very popular target. So long as he doesn't crumble in the camp-to-games transition like he has in years' past. I think he's better with Chris Palmer's honey than Mike Heimerdinger's vinegar.

Over (Reaction)

Hey Paul, After the Texans beat the Colts in the first game I hope you make plans for the super bowl! TEXANS 2011!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Yeah, just like last year.

Cynthia (Nashville)

Maybe already covered, but why did Peyton Manning wait until May to have his neck surgery? If he had done it several months earlier (shortly after the end of the season), he might be ready to play by now. Or was he busy being a new Dad, so postponed the procedure?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Isn't it presumptuous of us to say he needed the surgery before May? Couldn't he have had an issue and doctors said, "We think it'll settle down" and then it didn't? Couldn't they have said, "If you have surgery by May, you should be fine by August?" Not all this stuff is predictable or pans out according to plans.

Josh (Miami, FL)

Say Peyton can't play the first 5 games. Do you think Kerry can lead them to a winning record? And, how does the Colts offense change with Kerry under center?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I don't think they would have a winning record. He starts games slowly. The Colts are nowhere near as good a team playing from behind as they are from ahead. I don't see a certain win in there, including Cleveland.

lydell66 (CT)

Where do you think the Giants will end up this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Second in the NFC East.

Gil (Jacksonville)

What's your opinion on how the Jaguars have handled vets like Maurice Jones-Drew and Aaron Kampman? Do these guys need more than one pre-season to get ramped up? I tend to think they don't.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I tend to agree.

AllenOU (Houston)

Why are people saying its time to trade mario? Can we at least see some real games with the true 11 starters before we crush him and say he sucks. Wade is the only REAL D-coordinator we have had in houston with this team, and if he says mario can do it I believe him. Lets give him a chance, as he has played less then 35 snaps at a new position. You seem to be slightly encouraging this behavior!!! JK!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Encouraging it? It's ridiculous. I absolutely agree with you. It's far too early to say whether this works or not.

Will L (Knoxville TN)

Do you have a limit for how many times you answer someone in chats?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Not really. Honestly I read the questions and pick the best ones. If they all happen to be coming from the same three people, I don't even notice until someone complains. Then maybe I get a little gun shy. Now ask some more!

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Are you having VY withdrawals yet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I never knew how much divorce really hurts.

Brandon Harris (Reliant)

How in the world is Molden and Mccain playing instead of me. I have more talent then the both of them combined, and they havent been tearing it up in the preseason. Mccains pick was pure luck, and moldens came off a penalty caused by him!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Have heard good things about Brice McCain overall as a potential nickel. But I'd be giving you every chance to be fourth or even third.

Malcolm (Philadelphia)

Hey Paul, here's a fantasy question. Should I take a chance and draft Javon Ringer in a late round in case that CJ holds out through the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

The late rounds are all about such risks. But take Delone Carter first.

Kevin (Louisiana)

One word answers are acceptable here.... How many wins does CJ presence account for? Will the media explode if a Tropical Storm hits NY? Is it reasonable to think that one can shave 10 points from there golf handicap in 6 months? What's the chances of Hasselbeck missing at least 3 series due to injury in the first 6 games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Three. Yes. No, unless they are doing nothing but golfing. Slim.

RC (Totonto)

Odds that Pat McAfee kicks the longest field goal in NFL history this year? I hear he is knocking them down from 75 yards?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Opportunity would have to present itself. But how about beating the record by a yard or two first instead of going crazy?

Sean McKenzie (Van Wert, OH)

Im a Browns fan first of all, but, the Texans pickup of CB Johnathon Joseph was the smartest thing they have done in years. I always dreaded Joseph more than Hall on Cincy's secondary. Very smart move by the Texans. I have them winning the divison finally, you agree???

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I like the move too. But no, I need to see it from the Texans to believe it.

Malcolm (Philadelphia)

Who's starting over who by week 1?Vickers or Casey?Cody or Mitchell?Allen or Jackson?Jones or Walter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Honestly, the starter at those spots doesn't matter a lot as the work will be divided. Except at the corner spot, where I would go with Allen.

Scott (IN)

Taking into consideration the timing of Collins signing, do you think a familiar Painter or the new-comer Collins will perform better come week one? Will the Colts even make the offense vanilla for Collins in case he's needed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

There is no chance that if Manning is out Painter works ahead of Collins. Zero.

Gil (Jacksonville)

I'm not sold on Scotty McGee as a kick return specialist. I think he needs to have a strong showing in the final two pre-season games to have a shot of sticking. If he doesn't make the team, who returns punts? Can't have Mike Thomas, MJD OR Rashean back there, can you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Kick return specialist is akin to dodo bird. Was a bad idea that has not panned out. Give it up. Try Shorts, perhaps?

Carlos (Sunny California)

PK, are you feeling ok? I never seeing back to back Jaguar questions answer like today! In a more serious matter, people should realize that as long as Manning is breathing and in a Colts uniform, they will always be the team to beat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

I've never had back-to-back Jaguars questions to answer before!

lucas (Indiana)

Curtis Painter has to know he isn't a starter, but his confidence has to be shot after signing Collins, what happens now for him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

He becomes a third-stringer. We're going to worry about massaging a bad quarterback's confidence? He's going to have to toughen up a bit and play better.

Nate (Ohio)

Can Kerry Collins be an effective starter early for the colts if Manning can't play for the first few games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

More effective than Painter? Absolutely. Effective enough for the team to win games. I doubt it.

Michael (Montreal)

Hi Paul, are you suprised by the lack of interest in Hayden? would it be wise to resign him if you are the colts even if it means paying him 3-4 mill?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

No one will or will need to pay him that. Bet he's just waiting for an injury and an opportunity.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Brief spider-related interruption. No humans were injured.

Brooks Reed (Houston)

What are the odds that i take over a starting job sometime this season? Am I not being impressive?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

You've been good. I don't think being the third OLB is a terrible place to start off. You'll get time.

Corey (D.C.)

Cound the Titans include insentive escalators into CJ's contract that could push the rumored $10M per season they are willing to pat, to the $12-13M per season he supposedly wants? Seems like that would be a benefit to both sides.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

He's interested in guaranteed money, not incentives. Incentives are a final element in a deal, not a place to start.

michael k (jacksonville, fl)

to your knowledge, any other teams in the afc south needing to bump up ticket sales to potentially avoid blackouts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Last I checked, Titans and Texans were closing in. Colts had only singles left. I don't expect blackout issues for any of them.

RocketMan (Mission Control - Houston)

Cushing has been relatively quiet this preseason - yes, I know it's just two games - did the weight he says he lost hurting his performance or could it be something else. :o)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Could be coming back from serious knee surgery.

Jon (WA)

Can you head over to the AFC East and try a live blog over there? You know you would rather talk about a division that actually is exciting!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Yes, the Redskins scream excitement to me. Also scream No. 1 draft pick in 2012. [Cue 100 people telling me I misread that or don't know my divisions. Then stick around as I respond again.]

David (York, PA)

At this point is it safe to assume that Kerry wanted to play for the titans but the club's interest just was not there? I know Kerry makes much more sense as an insurance backup than as a 2-3 yr QB solution, but I cannot help but feel that this reinforces the titans label of not paying or bringing back its players. It may not be warranted, but i feel that between the CJ situation and Collins coming out of retirement to sign with the Colts, the titans are getting a very bad rap that will hurt their market for future players.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Why couldn't he have just felt like he wanted to retire then, and felt differently now given opportunity and $4 million? Hasselbeck is better than Collins. How can going and getting a better player hurt the Titans' rep?

Nate (Ohio)

If Mario fails at WOLB, what other position in houston's defense would he be the best at?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Nickel corner. No, there is only one conceivable answer and that's end. But they won't be moving him any time soon.

Devin (San Antonio)

Cushing was subpar playing middle LB last season when ryans got hurt, and he's now playing there again. I know he's lost some weight, but will he ever be as effective there as OLB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

It's not the same position -- 3-4 vs. 4-3. Wade Phillips thinks he will be better there. To me the question is if he can return to rookie form or if we're always going to be asking if it was the PEDs.

Geoff (Boston)

Did the Texans offensive dominance of the Saints defense last Saturday mean that the Texans offense is that good, that the Saints offense is that bad, or that its meaningless preseason football?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

C. But it was encouraging. Saints were vanilla.

Blake (Nashville)

Collins is not likely to play against the Packers tomorrow night...If Painter plays well against Green Bay, do the Colts brass rethink who should start Week #1 if Peyton can't go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

No. How in the world can anyone think Painter would be a better option?

Matt (Nashville, TN)

Titans final roster DL: Morgan, Jones, Smith, Marks, Casey, Hayes, Klug, Ball. Thoughts? Would they keep 9 potentially? If so, I guess Ford or Haye would be the last one in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Not loving Marks right now. I'd rather they keep Ford or Haye ahead of him.

Spencer Weston (Tenenssee)

What are your views on Garcon, building block at receiver or talent who may never fully reach his potential?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

B.

Miguel (Austin, TX)

What do you think of Will Rackley in Jax? The o-line still seems quite shaky...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Hasn't been as good in the games as I was expecting.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

When you look over the Jags team as a whole, what areas would concern you the most?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

The secondary and Courtney Greene. The receivers.

Colin (Houston)

Is T.J. Yates being groomed to be the eventual successor to Matt Schaub or is he just filling in as the third QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

What is just filling in? Why would you spend a draft pick on a guy if you didn't think you could develop him? It's not as if they need Matt Schaub's replacement yet. But Gary Kubiak should always be developing a guy in that third spot.

Finley's Leash (The Garage Wall)

"In Dungy We Trust" - I'm going with what he said about Manning starting, it's not like he coached him in the Superbowl or anything...on a more serious matter, when do the Yankees pull a Pavano and cut bait on Burnett? I'm sick of waiting for him to pitch to his talent and don't started on Soriano and blowing the tie in the 10th last night!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

If he can play he will play, yes. He can't play if doctors say he's putting himself at risk. So Dungy was exaggerating. Also he doesn't know the current details. Hughes is killing Yanks today.

Jacob (Vancouver)

Hey Paul. Question: from the couple of practices you have seen and the 2 preseason games, do you think that Anthony Castanzo is ready to start at LT? Or do you think that the Colts might start him at a different position to start the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

No chance of another position. He hasn't worked at another position as far as I know. He should start Day One. Who is a better alternative?

Caleb (Nashville)

Manning misses two games, chances Colts total a double digit amount of wins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

85 percent.

Aaron (CT)

What's the Colts plan for Delone Carter? Or is your recommendation based on Addai's injury history.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

No, it's based on him being a short-yardage, goal line type of back. I don't think he gets yards, necessarily. I do think he gets touchdowns.

Blake (Nashville)

How would a Hayden resigning in Indy work? Would he "count" double with him already being a cap hit this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

His prior cap number is locked in. A new deal would produce a new, additional number, likely veteran minimum.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

How important is it to have a big time WR in today's NFL? Can the Jags get by without having a true number one WR?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Not a lot of teams have one. There are not 32 of them. But there is a lot of room between not having one and having unproven second, third and fourth options.

Dan (Raleigh)

Hey PK, what kind of trade for CJ would even make sense? A 1st and 3rd rounder plus a dump truck filled with gold? David Garrard, maybe?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Sorry, I couldn't let this one pass. You want the Titans to trade their best player for a guy who would be their third-string quarterback? And you want the Jaguars to trade for a guy who plays the same position as their best offensive player?

Wilmer (Cookeville, TN)

Paul, Fantasy draft coming up Monday. Assuming CJ hasn't signed by then, what's the earliest I take him in a 10 team league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Third or fourth if you like to live on the edge.

Matt (Nashville)

He said AFC East PK...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

So I am somehow supposed to be fascinated by Buffalo and Miami?

Colin (Houston)

Maehl, Jean, or Darling for fifth wideout in Houston? I think Maehl bc he's tougher and has experience in the slot. Other two are more outside type receivers. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Lestar Jean or someone who's cut somewhere else.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Did I miss something... but is Derrick Morgan not a starter? Is he injured again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Has missed some time lately. Still being cautious. I think he starts out as a nickel guy.

Ryan (Jax)

What are your thoughts on the DTs in Jacksonville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Love them. Wish Knighton could get control over his weight for good. But I wish the same for me and I don't do it.

jake (ct)

starting to see comparisons of alualu and knighton to stround and henderson float around among jags fans. Its a little exciting to hear people making the connection but its gotta be a little early for that. You see any comparison?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I think this: <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/18721/dts-could-become-jaguars-defensive-id" target="_blank">From Dec. 3</a>

Jay in Spring (Houston, TX)

Typical PK. Saints were vanilla? Texans did nothing but run on them and one long pass, while they blitzed one time the entire first half. They were just as vanilla as the Saints.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Did I say the Texans weren't vanilla? It was a more important distinction for New Orleans a week after it was blitz crazy vs. SF.

Malcolm (Philadelphia)

Chances that by 2016, the Jaguars have left and gone to LA and the AFC West, while the Chiefs join the AFC South.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

I can't believe how many people think the Chiefs would ever want out of their division. Their rivalry with Oakland is one of the league's biggest. They aren't leaving. I think it would be the Rams if a change was needed.

RocketMan (Mission Control - Houston)

Many Texans fans are worried that the D-line lacks sufficient mass in the middle to effectively stop the run. Wade says quickness/strength of the DTs currently on the roster will perform this function quite nicely, thank you. The Saints success up the middle last Sat. says Wade may have miscalculated on this point. What say you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Single biggest concern out of that game was Saints' ability to run up the gut.

Matt (New Jersey)

Paul, is it looking like Kenny Britt will be suspended? He is so vital to their offense.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

He didn't look quite as vital while he didn't play in the two preseason games so far and they were fine. He may get suspended, but my gut says NFLPA would get an injunction to stop it until it was appealed in court.

Leon King (battening down hatches)

Jags LB corps: a) over-rated/over-paid b) much needed improvement c) somewhere in the middle

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

B.

Miguel (Austin, TX)

Do you think the Jags will try to address the missing #1 receiver issue during the season? I refer to Jacksonville's receivers as T-rexes, but it's not funny anymore... they really cant catch! Help!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Where can you get a No. 1 receiver during the season? Please don't say T.O.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)
