Hello and welcome to another chat! Let us get started.
One note -- the non-AQ preview is up so check it out. After our chat of course! http://espn.go.com/college-football/
OK, OK last Boise State question from me before the season... Granted I might just have my homer goggles on, but am I the only one thinking that a Boise State vs. Oklahoma re-match for the national title would just be insanely awesome? Maybe I'm wrong, but the hype to that game would be unreal.
It would indeed be insanely awesome. But a lot of teams are going to have to lose for that to happen. Start cheering against every SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12 team. Well maybe you already do that.
UCF not being included in the preseason ranking, fair or just right. Can they go 12-0 (would that be good enough for a BCS bowl invite) this season, if not what's there record and ranking at end of the season. NCAA letter to UCF is it serious?, is Godfrey in trouble with the Miami booster?
UCF is not a Top 25 team right now. There are a lot of questions on defense, especially at linebacker. I do not see 12-0. I think UCF is going to have a tough time at BYU and at Southern Miss just to name two. Tulsa is going to be a toughie, too. Though I do think BC is winnable. Yes, the NCAA letter to UCF is very serious. And I have not heard anything about Godfrey being in trouble.
What's the best non-AQ vs AQ game that no one's talking about? Obviously there is a lot of interest in Boise St. vs Georgia and BYU vs. Texas. What deserves more of our attention?
I think Tulsa vs. Oklahoma and/or Oklahoma State is going to be a good one, and I also think BYU v. Ole Miss is going to be a good one as well. Houston v. UCLA is a must-see because it is a rematch of a game in which Case Keenum got hurt. A lot of people are picking Houston as a darkhorse in the BCS. A loss there and that ruins things. Fresno State v. Cal and TCU v. Baylor are two more that come to mind right off the top of my head.
A couple of national folks have recently called for San Diego State to win nine or 10 games this season. What are reasonable expectations for Rocky Long's first season?
I think 10 games is pretty high. I peg San Diego State with between 8 and 9 this season. The expectation has got to be getting back to a bowl game and getting close to the win total from last season. Too much talent there not to get 8 or 9 wins.
Andrea, Utah State has been irrelevant for the last couple decades. For the first time they have an able coach and multiple weapons on defense and offense, including Robert (Turbo) Turbin ab running back. Do you see USU having a chance to finally make some waves in the non-AQ rankings?
I don't know about being ranked, Paul. I think Turbin coming back is huge. In fact, I think one of our college football folks did have Utah State in a bowl game. I am not sure because of uncertainty at QB. Replacing Borel is going to be tough. I will say that Bobby Wagner is a big-time player that more people need to watch.
Why has Tulsa kinda dropped off your talking list? You had them early on as a potential BCS Buster and now there isn't much talk about them and I think you have them picked second in the west... Falling off the bandwagon already?
I like Tulsa, I really do. I just think Case has a slight edge over GJ and that is what is going to put Houston into the CUSA title game. Keenum getting his 6th year really was a game-changer. The nonconference schedule is absolutely brutal for Tulsa, and I worry about that having an impact on the team as well.
Andrea, TROY has more experience running a spread offense than Clemson and they're not totally acclimated, offensively or defensively, yet. I think this will be a continuation of the Trojans' year-end success carried over...healthy defense and more-than-capable offense...TROY by 10. This defense has several players that were highlighted during the preseason and they will live up to their collective billing.
I am not as optimistic as you are, Charles.
If San Diego State's Ronnie Hillman rushes for 1,500 yards again this season, is he a top contender for the Heisman Trophy as a junior next season?
By top contender, do you mean one of the favorites? It is hard to say. I think he is going to need more than 1,500 yards and San Diego State to lose either no games or one game. Kellen Moore has gotten noticed because of his video game numbers, but also because Boise State is a Top 10 team that has lost one time in two years.
Although it may be a tall task if BYU were to go through their first four games undefeated, (which I think could happen) and could then carry that momentum through the season, does their strength of schedule put them ahead of other Non-AQ in the BCS bowl pecking order?
The problem for BYU is it would have to be an at-large selection to get into a BCS game. There is no automatic bid. So if there are two undefeated non-AQ teams, then the one that is in a conference gets the spot first.
with all the talk about Boise, What do you think about TCU if they go undefeated, do you think a 25-0 (2 seasons) non AQ will get the nod and play in the NC game
Last season has nothing to do with this season, so 25-0 means nothing. TCU is starting much further down in the polls this year than last year, so it is going to be harder to get into position to do that. And a lot of other teams would have to lose. About the only undefeated AQ team I think TCU would be able to jump is a team from the Big East. And even then it, would depend on who that team is from the Big East.
If Boise State gets by Georgia and runs the table, in your opinion, are they qualified to play in the BCS Championship game?
Absolutely. I think any undefeated team is qualified to play for a title.
What record (overall and league) do you see San Diego State finishing with in 2011 and do you think the Aztecs can upset TCU or Boise State when they visit Qualcomm Stadium?
I did not do league or overall records for teams yet, but I think San Diego State will have 8 or 9 wins. Can they upset TCU or Boise State? Absolutely. Almost upset TCU last year. Will they? That is the big question. I do not see that today, but ask me again when we get closer to the games.
Andrea, do you think any other non-AQ will make the "leap" this year into becoming a recognized top 25 program?
I think the team with the best shot is Houston. Quite an easy schedule, so to speak. Case Keenum back. Better depth/quality on offensive and defensive lines. This has got to be the year for Houston to take that next step.
should i be nervous about south florida as a ND fan?
Absolutely. USF has a great defense. OK I messed up and forgot I was only doing non-aQ questions today. That is the last one of those you guys!
Considering NIU's O-Line and Chandler Harnish at the helm. Will NIU upset Wisconsin in the Soldier Field Showdown?
What about the D-line? What concerns me about that game is the Wisconsin running game/massive OL vs. an NIU D-line that has 3 new starters and has nobody even close to 300 pounds. Every Wisconsin starter is north of that mark.
With all the hype over Houston/SMU/USM, you seem to be discounting the Knights this year. All indications show that our defense may even be IMPROVED from last, and our offense will continue to impress. What are you seeing that prevents UCF from winning C-USA yet again?
I give the edge to Southern Miss for a few reasons. 1. I think Austin Davis is better than Jeff Godfrey AT THIS POINT IN THEIR CAREERS. 2. UCF is learning a new defensive scheme and has some question marks at LB. 3. Southern Miss seems to have UCF's number. To me, this game decides the division.
Andrea, thanks for the chat. Why does the argument about BSU not being able to compete in the SEC, PAC 12, Big Ten, etc keep coming up week in and weak out? Why can't people figure out that if BSU were affiliated with one of those conferences they would reap the benefits of recruitment?
Simple. People do not think logically. They just get so enraged that a non-traditional school is trying to bust up the BCS party, they make nonsensical arguments like that one.
Do you think ECU can win the c-usa Championship this year?
Not this year. I don't think the defense is going to be good enough for that to happen. The offense will be plenty good. But with a new scheme, I am just not sure that is the answer.
Do u think Georgia has a good chance of upsetting Boise state this year?
It is incredible to me that Georgia would be pulling off the uspet. Anybody else think that? Of course there is a chance for Georgia to win. The Bulldogs have an excellent QB in Aaron Murray and if there is one weakness to the defense, it is in the secondary, where 3 starters are gone. If Georgia can connect on some passes, especially deep, the Bulldogs can win.
Is there a better running back duo in the MAC than Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown?
They would be tops on my list.
If Tulsa is 3-0 heading into Boise in week 4 and the Broncos are 2-0, the winner is basically guaranteed to be ranked first after the game right?
Tom, you joker you.
BYU vs. Houston in 2013-14 is a pretty sweet gig (Cougars vs. Cougars for one). Do you think this is indicative of the bottom of BYU's schedule improving as the independent clock rolls on?
I do like this game, too, Jonny. I am not sure if it is indicative of that. BYU just scheduled Weber State, too. But there is no question BYU wants to try to get as many good games as possible for a balanced schedule. A good team from CUSA certainly helps the cause.
Air Force seems to be the hot pick for sleeper non-BCS teams, but the Falcons have to travel to face Navy this year. Considering how they lost the CIC last year and how they get two weeks for Air Force this year, do you see coach Niumat's team retaking the series and the CIC Title?
Glad you were able to get your question in, Adam. I still like Air Force to repeat as CIC champs. I know Coach Niumat is going to have his team fired up for this game, but there are a few reasons I go with AFA: 1. Tim Jefferson. 2. Much more experienced defense.
Does anyone outside of Kalamazoo think that WMU has a legit shot at the MAC West?
Apparently Phil Steele, who has WMU finishing in a tie for first.
Do you think Akron has what it takes to win more than one game in the MAC this year?
What encouraged me about Akron last year was the way the Zips showed improvement at the end of the year. I knew they would not go winless. Does that mean they are going to make a turnaround like Miami (Ohio)? No. It would help if Ball State was on the schedule, but no dice there. So I think it is going to be tough to win more than 1 MAC game.
What is your prediction for the BSU/GA game?
You will wait until next week and you will like it, Jason!
What's your take on the "quarterback controversy" in Ft. Worth? Real issues or just Patterson being Patterson?
I think it is Patterson being Patterson. I just can't see how he doesn't start Pachall. He's the only guy with any experience at all, and he's been groomed for this job for the last few seasons.
BYU finally coming back to Hawaii, Does Hawaii have a chance? Wanna come, might have an extra ticket
That game is so late in the year, I am going to refrain on a pick there because I want to see how the Hawaii offense develops. But with Bryant Moniz, Hawaii should have a chance in every game.
The TV ratings dropped 10% for the title game between Oregon and Auburn compared to Alabama vs Texas the year earlier. How much further would they drop if a Boise State or a BYU made it?
I actually think the ratings would be high because EVERYONE would want to tune in to see what happens. It would be a history-making event, and those two teams are so polarzing, you would have their fans and their detractors all watching.
Andrea, what can I expect out of my alma mater, the Miami Redhawks? They came out of nowhere last year...what are the chances of a repeat MAC title?
I feel like I am the only one who thinks Miami (Ohio) is going to win the East. This is a team that returns a lot of players, Zac Dysert was perfectly capable as a starter last year and Don Treadwell proved himself to be more than able when he filled in for Mark Dantonio last year at Michigan State. I don't think last season was a fluke. I realize the schedule is not the best, but I think all the pieces are there for another MAC run.
I know that Troy really needs to win a big AQ game to start moving the perception forward, but why is it that 5 straight conference championships get no love from anyone? We are consistently picked to finish 2nd or 3rd every year yet the Trojans win every year. When will the media at least give credit where it is due?
All these SEC fans that keep bringing up the 48-13 beat down in 2005 seem to be forgetting that Jared Zabransky was 95% responsible for that loss. Kellen Moore just will not make those same mistakes. I'm going out on a limb and calling a 48-13 blowout in Boise's favor. Your thoughts?
I agree with you re: Kellen Moore. But I do not think the game is a blowout. You will get my score next week.
Andrea, how bummed out are that we'll never have the chance to see the MWC that could've been with Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise, Air Force and SD State?
I don't think TCU, Utah and BYU are bummed out!
Who has a better shot at playing for the National Championship given their schedule, if either finishes unbeaten. Boise St. or Tulsa? Tulsa has OU, Ok St, and Boise on the schedule
I think Boise State will have the name recognition in the polls, and those make up 2/3 of the BCS standings. Nevada beat Boise State last year but finished behind in the BCS standings. So what does that say?
Andrea, Hypothetically, if Air Force were able to run the table do you think they could possibly bust the BCS?
They would have to finish as the top non-AQ team to get the guaranteed spot. Considering that means wins over TCU and Boise State, that would be likely unless a team like Houston runs the table and then it would be quite interesting.
Come september 3rd aaron murray and the georgia bulldogs will dominate the boise st broncos and aaron murray will prove he is the best number 11 on the field
I am writing that down, Calvin.
Do you think UCF will have 4 players (Weaver, Murray, Harvey and Godfrey) rush for at least 500 yds and 5 TDs this season?
That is quite possible. I love the backfield UCF has. I wonder how they are all going to split the carries.
Andrea, if Boise gets up big, do you think they will try to pile it on so that they can have a valid argument to be ranked ahead of a 1-loss SEC team (assuming Boise finishes undefeated) that either lost to Georgia or played them close?
That's not Chris Petersen's style, so I don't see that happening.
Andrea, do you know where Weber State is located, and who their coach is? In-state game for BYU, no different than B1G teams scheduling. Ron McBride brought Utah back from nowhere, yes Urban took over for him, but moat of his athletes were recruited by McBride. What's more, most BYU fans respect McBride and are glad to see this game.
Yes I know, but I was merely answering a question about BYU's scheduling. I don't think Houston is an indication of scheduling "tougher" when there is an FCS team on the books.
Andrea, I think you are too bias towards non-AQ, with UGA's talent level Boise State will be lucky to keep it close.
You have seen the talent level on Boise State, right?
What uniforms should Boise wear at home for MWC games? Maybe they get get black jersey/black pants combo?
I haven't heard black as an option, Kurt. I think Petersen is going to let his players decide that one.
How much do you think Kellen Moore will miss Titus Young and Austin Pettis and who do you think is the most likely player to step up in their absence?
I think he will miss them, but I also think that Boise State is going to go back to the way it did things before those 2 guys ... a nice rotation of 6-7 players. I think Tyler Shoemaker is going to have a big year. And watch out for little brother Kirby and Geraldo Boldewijn.
Hi Andrea, I am surprised you are leaving out the SMU-Texas A&M game from your list of non-AQ vs AQ games. Old Southwest Conference members, SMU is returning almost all of its starters, and finally has some depth on both lines. Should be a fun game to watch. Plus you can't discount the Peruna factor, most deadly mascot out there!
That is agood one, too. I Was just going off the top of my head and answering in a minute!
Rocky, I cannot find your question, please submit again and I will answer. Thanks!
UGA fans didn't think UCF could keep it close either. Look what happened with that...........
Do you think it is a mistake that TCU is leaving to the Big East in 2012? Think about the teams that the MWC is adding; the conference will be ultra competitive.
Ummm ... Big East has AQ spot. MWC does not. So no, I do not think it is a mistake.
What is your prognosis for the Wyoming Cowboys this year? Think they'll get to be bowl eligible again?
I do not see a bowl game this year for Wyoming. The schedule is tough and a true freshman is going to be starting at QB. With 2 FCS games, that means Wyoming would have to win 7 instead of 6.
Am I on chat time out because i predicted USF would go undefeated last week? Which C-USA division is stronger: East or West?
Haha no. There are a lot of questions in here today, folks. So if I am not seeing yours, I apologize. West is much stronger. Houston, Tulsa and SMU could all win the division.
How come no love for Air Force in the Non-AQ preview? They return the majority of starters from a 9 win squad that almost knocked off OU in Norman before a bunch of injuries...They get TCU in Colorado Springs as well, where the Frogs have seemed to have a tough time lately.
Air Force was in the service academies preview. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/44932/can-service-academies-make-history-again
BYU vs Utah, week 3. Will you be in attendance? And who wins?
I do not know where I am going for Week 3. You will have to wait until then to find out who I pick, but I am leaning BYU.
How does BYU's decision to go independent and lose conference affiliation affect their recruiting? Is this going to end up being a good move or bad for them?
This actually has helped their recruiting. They are able to sell ESPN big time, something they could not do as members of the MWC. They also are now attracting non-LDS players as well.
You pick Southern Miss to finish at the top of C-USA East. What are the chances that they crash a BCS party? Gotta love the respect they're getting in the rankings, just outside the top 25.
The schedule is pretty managable. Only SMU from the West, UCF at home. I think the toughie is going to be at Navy. Virginia is going to be much better this year so those are my 2 games that cannot be overlooked.
Have I seen Boise State's talent level, unfortunately 'yes' they are ESPN's darlings and shown all the time, I have to watch them... I wasn't impressed with them beating VaTech, a few more minutes and a average ACC team beats them.
You don't have to watch. You can turn the station. Were you impressed with UCF last year?
Has Boise ever beat an SEC team? Or could this be the first time?
It has never happened.
Boise's conference in 5 years?
Let me be really honest here. I have no idea.
Andrea, Cal is looked at over Fresno St by 10 points in most betting sites. How do you think this will end?
Thanks, Rocky. I really do think Fresno has an excellent shot at pulling the upset. Maybe I am being naive over Cal not being good last year. But Coach Hill always coaches his teams up big-time against AQ opponents (non-AQs are a different matter). I talked to Derek Carr yesterday and he is beyond fired up for the season. He is going to take his lumps for sure, but I think this has the potential for an upset.
Your thoughts on Kellen Moore in the NFL?
He obviously does not have the "prototypical" size. He is the perfect college quarterback. I think he gets drafted, and would be an asset to any team because of his knowledge of the game, work ethic and leadership. But he is not going to be a first round pick by any stretch.
well boise fans said they would beat us in 2005...look what happened.
All I keep hearing from most of your colleagues at ESPN is that if Boise beats Georgia then "no one else on their schedule can beat them." So my question is, when did TCU and Air Force get taken off the BSU schedule?
Well you have not heard that from me, Matt. You also forgot San Diego State and Tulsa.
I think 10 wins in the regular season are a very real possibility this year for Troy, losses to Clemson (a game we could win) and Arkansas (without Kniles Davis who knows?) with wins over Navy and UAB. If we do just that and win a bowl game could that finally get us ranked?
I think Navy wins, and I also think the only way a Sun Belt team gets ranked is if it goes undefeated or has 1 loss. But even one loss is stretching things.
ask jack from ga if he watched college football last year. Va. tech was acc champion so they were above avg and couldnt beat Boise State
You ask him!
Andrea, not trying to be a jerk, but have you got to me question yet, or is it one that you bypass...and maybe its me using via phone...just wondering?
I did not send one, send it in quickly!
Do you agree with the Sports Illustrated and ESPN polls that TCU's Gary Patterson is the nation's best coach?
I think he is one of the best coaches, no question. I would still rank Nick Saban No.1. But I think that poll was of his peers, so it is hard to argue against coaches who picked him.
Nevada's first four games are on the road, where do you see them standing on Oct. 8?
Great question, A.D. I think Nevada has got to have one of the hardest opening stretches in the nation with 4 straight road games. I would pick 1-3, but there is the possibility of an upset over Texas Tech. I think the Broncos are going to be mighty eager to avenge what happened last year.
Justin, The ACC stinks...and VT lost to James Madison the week after.
Whoever scheduled that JMU game for a Thursday was not very smart.
After the SEC goes 0-3 the first week on ESPN, will SEC fans finally understand that it takes more than talent to win a game?
IF Jordan Jefferson plays, I think LSU beats Oregon. But no, SEC fans will not agree with you ever, Casey.
Your thoughts on TCU's stadium renovation? Looks amazing, but they'll be playing in a construction zone this year.
I think TCU needed to get that done. So they play in a construction zone ... as long as they stay OUT of the construction zone, they will be fine.
over under for Kirby Moore 1000 yards, 10 td...since his brothers last year to throw to him?
OK, T.J. I would say under on both. I think the ball is going to be spread around to a lot of different guys this year. I wonder whether there will be a 1,000-yard receiver even. Could have 5 guys with 700 yards.
Well that wraps up today. This was my all-time highest number of chat questions. Thanks for your interest, and I will see you again next week! AA
