Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:01 PM)

Wow. Just as I was logging on for this chat, my Twitter feed went bonkers. It sounds like a 5.8 magnitude earthquake just hit in Virginia. I pray everyone is safe. If you're on the East Coast, please stop reading this chat and get somewhere safe. If you're elsewhere, then let's carry on.

Dr. H. Doofenschmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Totally agree with Gruden's semi-rant during the game last night. The touchdown replay thing is atrocious. Do they have to announce it? Do the television crews have to pay attention to it? The networks usually cut to commercials after touchdowns--can't the score be reviewed during the commercial break? Any idea if the league is looking into how to fix this?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

Well, I think it's important to get touchdowns right, and I'm hopeful things will get quicker as officials get used to it. If there are still big delays midway through the season, then maybe adjustments will be necessary.

Barry Sanders (Trinidad)

If I was on this Lions team in my prime, would you say they're super bowl favorites?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Wow. Could you play cornerback as well? No, seriously, I would say the 2011 Lions with Barry Sanders would be pretty competitive.

Bill (Toronto)

Does Packers WR Chastain West have a legit shot at making the team as a 6th receiver? Is Brett Swain's roster spot in jeopardy? How will the last receiver shot shake out?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:05 PM)

Yes and Yes. Ultimately, the Packers will choose the best special teams player for that spot. Swain has been pretty good in that area before. But West has opened enough eyes to have a chance.

wideout3485 (GR, MI)

Kev, alot of people seem to think the Lions are a darkhorse for the playoffs. I would love to see this but given the state of the division let alone the conference I see it quite possible the Lions could go 9-7 and still miss the playoffs...thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

They absolutely could go 9-7 and miss the playoffs. But that depends on how other teams do. I'll continue to say the Lions have the type of team that can challenge for a playoff spot. Most you can say at this point.

Mike (Tampa)

The Detroit Lions have good offensive players. However, I think it is their weak o-line has contributed to the Stafford injuries. How do you think the Detriot O-line will perform this season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

The big thing is getting Backus back. But I don't agree that the line is to blame for his injuries. Yes, Julius Peppers did beat Jeff Backus for a sack in Week 1 last year. But the 2009 shoulder injury came at the end of a long play Stafford extended to throw a Hail Mary. The knee injury came on a scramble and the second 2010 shoulder injury happened when he was scrambling.

Bill (Toronto)

With Packers OLB Frank Zombo's broken shoulder blade will the team look to trade for or sign another LB or will they just stay with what they have?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

Typically they have done the latter. It's now Erik Walden's job to lose.

Nathan (Phoenix, AZ)

Lions - Maurice Stovall makes the 53-man team right? Got to keep that guy around right?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

I liked him when I was at camp, but as with the Packers, that last receiver spot or two will go to the best special teams player.

Brett (Orlando, FL)

what do you think Lambeau could do to turn itself into the stadium that everyone looks at kinda like dallas has now?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Not a friggin thing. No offense, but I don't think anyone wants a replica of the Dallas stadium. That said, they are working on some projects to enhance the video boards and the scoreboards at Lambeau. Modernization is fine. Obnoxiousness is not.

James (Indianapolis)

What's up with the rookie DT Stephen Paea? Haven't heard his name much at all in reports. Is he underwhelming?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

He had a few early injuries. But it was interesting that general manager Jerry Angelo spoke of the Bears' interior depth and suggested that Henry Melton could move outside to end. If the Bears do that, Paea would get on the field more.

Cody Seelhoefer (Bartelso, IL)

Kevin,I realized that the Bears offensive line yielded less sacks last night versus the Giants than the previous outing. However, should Bears fans be concerned this may only be because Mark Martz called safer plays, which is why the offense wasn't all that effective?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

I thought there were a fair amount of donwfield passes. I'm not saying the Bears' problems are solved, but their line played well enough Monday night.

luke (south bend)

What is the latest on Matt forte's contract. I do not want to go through the whole year saying forte would have broken that tackle if he had his contract. Please tell me they are giving him the deal he deserves soon!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

There have been no public indications that a deal is coming soon. Jerry Angelo last week spoke about the "line in the sand." You wonder if this thing will either get done in the next week or so and, if not, whether it will be tabled to the offseason.

Donovan McNabb (Minnesota)

Kevin, I know I'm new to the twin cities, but I'm a little nervous that I haven't led a touchdown drive yet this preseason, can you put me at ease?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

Getting Percy Harvin back might make things easier for you.

Frank Zombo (Green Bay, WI)

Real men play with broken bones. <--- Merlin Olsen likes this.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

In all seriousness, what an unbelievable thing that was. A fractured shoulder blade is a rare injury and very painful.

Jahvid Best (Allen Park, MI)

I'm not feeling so good...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

Definitely scary for someone of your background with concussions to suffer another one. And it didn't appear that you absorbed a big hit on the play, either.

BadGirl Bob (Dallas)

If McNabb plays well do the Vikings stick with him or do they go with Pounder regardless at some point this season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

To me that's the added layer of intrigue they brought with them in acquiring McNabb. If McNabb plays well enough to avoid the acute need to bench him, Ponder's debut gets pushed back to next season.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

In your opinion, what will the Vikings do to fill Bryant McKinnie's spot at left tackle? His replacement Charlie Johnson seems determined to get McNabb and Ponder killed.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

There aren't many options as far as left tackles at this point. If Johnson really can't do it, the next possibility could be using Phil Loadholt there. I don't think that's what the Vikings want to do, though.

Short (SSP)

The Vikings' offense looks eerily similar to the one Childress ran his first couple of seasons here: run, run, 2-yard slant pass on third down, close your eyes and hopefully fall forward for the first down. How can they expect fans to endure that again? They simply have no one who can stretch the field.Your observations, please.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

You don't like multiple passes to Jim Kleinsasser? Ha. Without Harvin and Shiancoe, they won't have many chances for explosive plays. When those guys get back in the lineup, things will open up a bit. I think.

Johnny Knox (Chicago, IL)

So let me get this straight... they WANT Roy Williams to play instead of me?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

If you just sit tight and keep a good attitude, chances are you'll get out there pretty soon. Williams needs to get his act together quickly.

Trevor (Grand Haven)

Green Bay has given up a ton of sacks in their preseason games, I feel like Aaron may have another fifty sack season, and with his recent concussions this could be trouble, thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

I don't think it will be quite that bad, especially with all of the weapons he has at his disposal. There should always be someone open to dump it off to. And I feel better about it with Lang at left guard than I would have with Sherrod.

Brian (Rochester)

Based on Green Bay's no-huddle performance against Arizona, are we more likely to see them use this approach from the outset of their games than waiting to use it out of necessity (when they're losing)?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

Could be based on matchups. I think the big thing is McCarthy has gotten it on film for future opponents to study and/or worry about. Guessing it will be more of a change of pace, but we'll see.

Ethan (Austin)

What do you think about Staffords last minute throw the ball out of bounds manuver. Seems like e has been told to stay healthy at all costs by the look of it.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

Yeah, I bet he got some ribbing for that and I'm surprised it hasn't been talked about more. He needs to take a hit at some point, but there is no sense having a cornerback take a dive at his knees when he is just trying to get out of bounds anyway.

The U (Packerland)

time to remind everybody who the worldchamps are

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

Congrats to the Dallas Mavericks.

Bob (Oostburg)

What are your thoughts on Bob McGinn's article today on T.J. Lang where several current Packer DLs had some pretty bad things to say about Daryn Colledge? Pretty revealing stuff about how he was viewed in the locker room.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

I didn't see the story but McGinn has made clear he doesn't think Colledge was very tough. It was clear that something was up when the Packers clearly made no effort to bring him back.

Joe (Schmo)

The third down RB for Green Bay when the season starts is _______.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

Let's change it around. When the season ends, it will be Alex Green.

Maurice Morris (Detroit, MI)

Everyone needs to relax, my broken hand is almost healed up. Not just a coincidence that the four game win streak to end last season happened when I stabilized the Lions run game.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

Fair point. Everyone keeps talking about Mike Bell and Jerome Harrison and forget the nice job you did in relief last year.

Bear Down (KS)

Kev, who were the most impressive/least impressive Bears players in last nights Bears/Giants game?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:26 PM)

It wasn't Major Wright's best night. We've seen him tackle better. I was impressed with the job Carimi did on Tuck in the plays I saw them matched up.

Paco (Tulum)

Any word on contract negotiations with Peterson? That Fitzgerald contract has to be influential.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:27 PM)

There have been some big deals lately. Fitzgerald is one. Joe Thomas is another. But I just don't know how much urgency there is when the guy is already set to make $10.72 million this year.

MattC (Dallas)

Kevin, what kind of season do you see for J Best? 1300 total yds 8td's?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:27 PM)

The Lions should and would be THRILLED if they get that. Need to see him stay healthy and one the field for a while.

chris k (coral springs)

Hay are you late again???

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

I'll ask the horses.

matt (ewing nj)

5 tight ends for the Packers' 53 man roster. Outrageous? Or intimidating? Maybe go 4-wide with all tight ends with a single set back, bunch everyone in and run the rock?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

McCarthy has shown an ability to use formations from every point on the spectrum. But four tight ends on the field at the same time might be asking a bit much.

Uncle Mannequin (Decorah, IA)

Why do Mike McCarthy and James Campen insist on working out the OL corps at multiple positions? It seems counter-intuitive to take reps away from a new lineman at the position he/she is intended to play. Is this common in other teams?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

I've always wondered the same. I can see why they want their best five linemen on the field, but you have to wonder if it has stunted the growth of some younger linemen. I'm glad to see they appear to have anchored Bulaga at right tackle and now Derek Sherrod is getting his only work at left tackle.

J.B. (PA)

It's starting to sound like there will be no reason for Vikings fans like me to order the NFL Sunday Ticket this season. Are they becoming the new Lions?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Ha. No. They have a lot of talented players still. Their biggest issue will be getting the offense on the same page in such a short period of time.

MattC (Dallas)

Roy Williams looked awful last night with the dropsies, again. Is he finished?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Put it this way: He won't get many more chances if he blows this one.

c.j. (michigan)

career year for megatron??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

I really think he and Stafford are ready to take it to the next level, yes.

Jahvid Best (Allen Park, MI)

I don't have a concussion. Since when does "Killer" practice medicine? Listen to team doctors and not beat writers for diagnosis next time Seifert.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

Hmmmmm.

Justin (salyersville)

if stafford stays healthy do you think he can get 4000 + yards and 35 td and a NFC North title

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

Yes. Yes. Probably not.

Chester Taylor (Chicago, IL)

Am I going to get cut?? Maybe I shouldve stayed with the vikings..

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

Ha. You got paid handsomely last year in Chicago. I would have made the same move. After watching last night's game, you wonder if the Bears need a veteran change of pace between Forte and when Barber is used in short-yardage/goal-line. It's a luxury, to be sure.

Diontae (MI)

The Lions were better against the pass then they were against the run. Why do you and other media outlets keep speaking about them needing CBs? There is no J.Wade or C.C. Brown in that secondary anymore.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

I think I've backed down from that considerably since covering camp, with the exception of the Barry Sanders crack earlier. They've got two credible starters and Alphonso Smith will be back soon.

Cale (Orlando)

I know you've been to many football games. Just wondering if you've ever seen anything like the fights out in California before?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

Never, ever, never at a football game. I've seen many more fights at baseball games for whatever reason. I don't know. With all the booze at NFL gamnes, you would think there would be more fights. But one difference about football games is you don't have nearly as many fans of the opposing team as you do for many baseball games because of the relative scarcity of tickets. Just taking a guess. But weren't most of the fights between Raiders and 49ers fans as opposed to between Raiders fans or 49ers fans?

Josh (VT)

Any new word on KVB's "soreness?" I don't tend to believe Jim Schwartz anymore when he says it shouldn't be too serious.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

I believe him in the sense that it will take a major injury for KVB not to get back out there. Pretty tough guy.

Gibby (Springfield, MO)

what do you think Tice said to the bears oline after giving up 9 sacks to Buffalo to have basically none against the giants?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

All he had to do was show them the tape of last year's game. No one likes getting embarrassed.

Bob (SSP)

In regards to the new kick-off rule everyone is unhappy about, why not just move the touchback spot up 5 yards to the 25-yard line?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

That was discussed originally but dropped because they didn't want to add any more incentive for returners to take a knee on a ball kicked into the end zone.

Short (SSP)

Kev, that "2-minute drill" Ponder was trying to execute towards the end of the first half of that Seattle game was B-R-U-T-A-L. It was as if every pass went to a tight end or fullback.Oh, wait ...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

Ha. I thought he needed to go downfield. Not sure what the play-calling was, but he'll have to get more aggressive. No doubt.

Roy Williams (Chicago)

You'all talking about Pre-Season? Really Pre-Season? Not even a real game?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

But you did it in regular season games last year and the year before as well, sir.

Stephen Tulloch (Detriot)

Will I be playing middle linebacker or weakside linebacker when the season starts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

I would be middle linebacker, but it wouldn't be surprising to see a few matchup formations in which you're outside. How does that work for you?

Capt. Gridiron (Ural Sea)

The NFC North collectively will have more wins than the NFC East this year: Confirm or deny.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Confirmed. Dream Team, Shream Team.

Eric (Chicago)

The Bears biggest problems are going to be where: 1) Special Teams returns 2) Red Zone Offense 3) O-Line 4) Turnovers

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Of those, I'll say red zone offense, especially if Roy Williams can't catch.

Dom (Blaine)

Let's get to this, Kev. Adrian Peterson. He will be 27 next season. In your opinion, do the Vikes spend the money or trade him for players/picks at the risk of alienating the fan base? They won't be going anywhere soon with Ponder behind center. Sadly, I say trade him and rebuild.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

You could make an argument for letting him play out the season at $10.72 million, franchising him in the winter and then taking it year by year after that. If someone blows them away with a trade offer, you do it. But if not, try to keep paying him a premium deal without future commitments.

noah (pa)

do you think last night bear's blowout means anything to the team?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

As far as confidence? Not really. They had a terrible preseason last year and started 3-1 in the regular season.

Mike (Raleigh)

From what I've read about Stafford's dump, it's so that he doesn't lose a couple of extra yards. This way he doesn't take a sack and doesn't take any yardage loss.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

You mean flip, just to be clear. That makes sense. It doesn't come into play too often because usually a guy will get back to the line of scrimmage if he rolls that far toward the sideline.

David (Florida)

Do you see J.Nelson getting more targets this year? Will He be returning any kicks too? Thanks

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

He has a chance to hoard in on Donald Driver's playing time, but I don't see him returning kicks unless several other players are injured or prove ineffective.

Ryan (WI)

Can Morgan Burnett be a star in the league?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

Not sure about that, but he looks a lot less tentative to me even after his injury. The play he made on the Kolb pass to Fitzgerald was pretty nifty.

Jackie (Shakopee)

In all fairness to Chester Taylor, could Adrian Peterson run behind that line?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

Peterson hasn't always had dominating lines in Minnesota.

Michael (Tallahassee)

The Bears biggest problem is going to be keeping Cutler injury free. Is it possible for Lovie Smith to reel in Martz and the passing game to consistently run the ball as they did after the Giants debacle last year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

I think they're fully planning on it. That's why Olsen is gone, Spaeth is in and Barber is in.

Matt (WI)

Should I drive or fly to Indy to watch the packers in Feb? Flying is faster but driving is cheaper.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Get out and see the rolling highways...

Jared Allen (MN)

When are the Vikings moving to LA? This stadium is horrible.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Haha. How are those ticket sales coming?

arnold (chicago)

Kevin, what everyone is seeming to miss about last nights game is that the 1st team defense played decent. It was the second team who couldnt do anything it seemed! In my opinion, our 1st team defense can do nothing to concern me unless injuries mount

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

I definitely agree. And don't forget Lance Briggs wasn't playing. Major Wright had some struggles, but he is one of 11.

DP (Minneapolis)

Has Berrian showed anything to give MN hope for a return of a burner outside receiver? Looks like Jenkins is an above average possession guy and Percy is a dynamic slot and then some type guy, so if we had the burner maybe our passing game might be half-decent

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

Not yet. Maybe they're saving it for the season. I have hardly seen McNabb looking for Berrian in the preseason.

Matt Stafford (Detroit)

3 Options: 1. Take the sack. 2. Run out of bounds for a loss. 3. Throw the ball out and don't loose yards. This shows that I "get it"

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

Smart. I will be sure to include your thoughts in a future post.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

Ok folks, a few more here.

AL (MN - Roch)

Do you think Marcus Sherels has a shot at making the Vikings' roster?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

He put some nice things on tape and one big mistkae on the punt return. But he has definitely opened some eyes.

Cale (Orlando)

Who is the best backup quarterback in the NFC North?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

There is a lot of Matt Flynn hype going on, and deservedly so. But Shaun Hill showed last year how valuable he can be.

Eric (Chicago)

Kevin, True or False W/L records in preseason mean nothing? For clarification, check out the Colts W/L records the last 6 seasons in both preseason and regular season.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

They mean nothing. You're always better off underanalyzing the preseason.

Matt (Minne)

Will Rudolph make an impact in MN this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

Absolutely. He looks like a playmaker.

Jason (Grand Rapids)

More sacks this year, Suh or Peppers?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

I'll say Suh based on the guys around him.

Grammer Police (Your mom's house)

Typically you want to pick up loose yards...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

Whoops. Whatever I did, I apologize for.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

Ok everyone, thanks so much. Chat with you next week.
