Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (1:59 PM)

What's up gang. Check out my column today saying someone will choke before the Chase, not because the try too hard, but because they don't try hard enough: http://tinyurl.com/3f34cwu

With kyles win in michigan....does it make denny hamlin think again about havin trd motors in his car...

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Maybe a little, but Hamlin's trouble had nothing to do with the TRD engine. The 11 is committed now to sticking with the TRD motors.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

One quick message guys. The shorter your question, the better chance I will post it.

Tek (Madison)

Tell me I wasn't the only one to see the #43 car pick up 10 spots on the last two laps. His car was awful all day. It was impressive to watch.

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

AJ keeps improving, and as crazy as it sounds, a Chase spot isn't out of the question. If he were to win at Bristol, he probably would pass Hamlin for the final wild car spot.

Joe (OH)

If you take the prize money won by 6 start and parkers and divide it by the 81,000 in attendance, you get $5.00 per ticket to pay the start and parkers.

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

Interesting thought, although other things pay for the opurse beside tickets sales, like TV money. The bottom line is NASCAR starts too many cars if at least six of them every week aren't really competing.

juan from dallas [via mobile]

Did you think Jr will make the Chase

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Yes. he has a 30-point lead over 11th with three races to go. However, as I wrote today, someone is going to try to play it safe and miss the Chase because of it.

Greg (NYC)

What is the likelihood that Clint Bowyer departs RCR for Roush Fenway or Gibbs?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

Not much unless those other teams have sponsorship in place, and they don't. MWR might be able to find it. But here's the thing. Clint doesn't want to leave RCR. The problem is they don't have the sponsorship lined up yet.

jeff oklahoma city [via mobile]

88 fan here. Will we see him in victory lane saturday night. We know he loves bristol!

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

He loves Bristol, but he's not going to win at Bristol. We'll see if he can prove me wrong.

Shannon (Houston Tx.)

Terry.. who are your top five at Bristol this weekend? Whom would consider to be a darkhorse?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

Top 5 _ Kyle, Carl, Clint, Kurt and Harvick. Darkhorse _ Menard.

John Asheville,NC [via mobile]

How is the contract extension going with Jr abd Hendrick, I heaerd rumors it had hit a snag.

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

No major snag. It will get done.

Ryan (Miami)

Do you think its possible that after their seat swap in June that Lewis Hamilton makes the switch to Nascar ala Juan Pablo Montoya in a few years?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

No, Nada, Nunca.

Marcus (Tyler, TX)

will NASCAR be penalizing harvick for wrecking Ambrose on pit lane at Michigan?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

No. No proof it was intentional.

Saul (San Diego)

Terry, one thing is race to get into the chase and another to race to win the cup (pucker factor), so who is favorite to win the Cup?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I think it's Kyle because he's a different guy now than he was a couple of years ago. But JJ always is in the back of the minds of the other Chasers. And he's a master at playing mind games with them,. He did it after Sunday's race, saying Kyle and Brad will start hearing voices in the heads during the Chase.

Jeff (Georgia)

Terry, can Kahne sneak into the chase? Good tracks for him coming up.

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

He could if he wins, and that's not out of the question. That's what makes this news wild card format so much fun.

Jeremy (Talent Oregon)

Hey Terry what are Jeff Gordon's chances to win at Bristol on Saturday Night?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Decent, but I wouldn't call him the favorite. Jeff hasn't won at Bristol since 2002, meaning he's never won in this car. But they way he's running makes him a threat to win anywhere these days.

Tracy (CT)

Did you feel the earthquake where you are at?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Didn't kow we had one, but we go those little jolts from time to time. Goes with the territory.

Saul (San Diego)

Terry, quick? how many cars will the finish on the lead lap at Bristol.

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

I'll take a wild guess and say 21.

Ken (Seattle)

Terry, did Mark Martin's 4th at Mich. prove that Lance wasn't the problem with the #88 team?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

One race doesn't prove anything. It's all about chemistry abd who works well together.

Tracy (CT)

5.8 in VA all the way up the coast to NY. Weird for the east coast.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Oh. I'm in the Seattle area. No wonder I didn't feel it. But we get a lot more of those than they do.

Jeremy (Talent Oregon)

Hey Terry, what will we have more of saturday night: Lead changes or caution flags?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Excellent question, but it will be lead changes. You don't see as many caution now with the new surface at Bristol.

Chris (New York City)

Do you see Ryan Newman as a darkhorse championship contender? He has the most points out of anyone the past 5 races and he's comming on strong at the right time. Thoughts?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

I wouldn't put him in my top 5, but you're right about one thing. Once the Chase starts, it's all about points racing again. So if he does what he's been doing, he has a shot.

Ken (Seattle)

Any chance of NASCAR running some road course events at Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

No chance whatsoever. It's a beautiful setting, but the facilty needs a lot of work.

Saul (San Diego)

With 3 races to go and short track racing on Saturday night, do you see any pay- backs occurring.

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Not really among the Chase bubble boys. They can't afford to risk wrecking their car. But you might see the old bump-and-run at the end if a guy needs to win to earn his Chase spot.

Glenn (GA)

With Stewart and Junior basicially throwing in the towel do you think Grubb and Stevie are both gonna be out?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

No, and they aren't really throwing in the towel. I know what Tony said after the race Sunday, but believe me, he wants to make the Chase because his sponsors want in the Chase. Now, that doesn't mean Grubb is safe at the end of the year.

Cory (Geneva, IL)

Based on the current top 10, all would be withing one race if ratioed the points to a 10 race chase. With so much able to happen at Talladega, is it really anyones chase this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

I don't know about anyone, but I think there are at least half a dozen guys with a good shot at it _ Kyle , JJ, Carl, Gordon and even Brad K. I wouldn't rule out Kurt, Kenseth of Harvick, either.

Billy (Reno)

Is there a backup team of a pit crew in the 48/88 shop? Why doesn't Jr get them because his current pit crew lost him 5 spots on a two tire stop! Yuck!

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

They pit crew situation for the 48/88 act as one unit of about 18 guys with the best guys getting the jobs on Sunday. I think it was a good idea in theory, but I don't see that it has worked out so well, including the 48.

Glenn (GA)

With Kurt Busch having trouble in just one race do you think he's gonna be out at Penske?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

No.

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

Kyle said on ESPN that Talladega is a "surival mode" race for him. Are he and Dave already racing like the chase has already started?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

They wanted that fourth win to start the Chase on top and they got. Now they want to fine tune things and make sure everything is working smoothly for the Chase.

Eric (Tampa, FL)

Right now, I see Kyle, JJ, Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon as legit title contenders based on how they've run this year, agree or disagree?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Agree. All are contenders, and I certainly would rule out Carl.

Blaine (MS)

If you had to pick one reason, just one, why is JJ sitting at only 1 win, and if he enters the Chase in say...3rd - 4th spot, do you have him as your favorite with the tracks tha make up the Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

One reason _ mistakes on pit road. I have Kyle as the favorite now with JJ a close second.

SAm (UT)

whats gonna be the wow factor at bristol?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

I hope there is a wow factor. Hasn't been a lot of that at Bristol lately, but they racing is better in some ways because guys can run side-by-side and race higher on the track.

Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)

Higher on the Richter scale, the earthquake in VA today or the response from Junior Nation if he misses the Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Are you kidding? Jr. missing the Chase would be a 9.5.

SAm (UT)

What race will JJ throw the switch and get into chase mode and gear?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

I think he already has. He has that confident look in his eyes at Michigan, sort of like: "OK boys, it's go time. Catch me if you can."

Saul (NJ)

Does this season remind you of 2008 when Dale squeaked into the chase but didn't do anything and finished dead last?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

The season doesn't remind of of 08. This season is way better. But Jr. might end up with the same fate.

Rich (Littleton, CO)

Kyle really made it look easy at Mich. When do you think he will put on his game face and really start showing #48 that he and Dave are new sheriff's in town?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

They are trying to do that now. The difference this time is I think Kyle really believes it.

Blaine (MS)

Do you see Jeff Gordon winning any more races this year, if so, what tracks? (Besides the coin flip of a race at Dega)

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

I think Jeff is capable of winning almost anywhere these days. Maybe his best shots are Texas and Phoenix.

SandeeB (TO)

Stewarts comments on Sunday can't make the employees at SHR feel very good about the organization. What type of leader is he? Who's doing the cleanup after his comments?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

These guys know Tony. They know he's says things when he's mad. I'm sure they've already talked it out at the shop.

Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)

If the race is moved to Sunday, due to rain from Hurricane Irene, will it be held during the day or at night?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

I'm pretty sure it would be a day race.

Kyle Busch Fan (Global)

Do you see the boos turning into cheers if Kyle wins the Sprint Cup or will he always be the man in black??

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Kyle always will have fans that dislike him, but the more sucvcessful be becomes and the more he acts like a grown-up, the more he will switch people to his side.

Ted (TX)

What makes Rowdy Busch the King of Bristol?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

He is better than most drivers at diving into the corner and making it stick. One of many reasons.

Matt (NY)

Hey Terry I'll be at my first bristol race Saturday. I've been to pocono many times and loved it and Dover too. We'll be sitting high up in turn 2. Are those considered good seats and any advice for the trip?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Great seats, but almost any high seats is Bristol is good because you can see all the way around the track. Focus more on your area. When you follow one car around the track for a long time, he can make you dizzy.

Teri (Burbank)

Could Kenseth sneak a win this weekend?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

It's possible. He was fourth in March and he's won there in the past.

Joanne (St. Louis)

Do you see Steven Wallace ever getting a Sprint Cup ride?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Ever is a long time. Who knows? He's still a young guy. I know Steven takes a lot of criticism and some of of is deserved, but he also finished fourth Saturday at Montreal. That's not easy task.

Howard (Long Island)

Which crew chief gets fired first? #29 Gil Martin or #14 Darien Grubb?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Grubb could get moved into the GM spot, so I wouldn't call that getting fired.

Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)

His last 3 races, he finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Does Brad Keselowski finish 4th this week?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

I'll say no. But that team is on a roll and peaking at the right time.

jesse (iowa)

The new bristol sucks!!! Give me the old bristol back!!!!

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

You can wish in one hand and ..., oh never mind. It's not gonna happen.

Hector (Miami)

Hasn't all this Brad talk been way overblown?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

I don't think so. I think he's the real deal and can run well in the Chase.

Billy (Reno)

Excuse me but Waltrip is the King of Bristol.

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

he was darn good in his day, no doubt about it.

jesse (iowa)

Trucks at bristol on wednessday night. best race of the year. besides kyle busch, whos the favorite?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

I really hope someone besides Kyle wins, like an actual truck series regular.

Ramon (Homestead)

Hasn't all this Kryle combined wins talk been way overblown?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

In my opinion, absolutely. I don't count minor-league wins. However, the man has 23 Cup wins at age 26. That's pretty darn impressive.

Robert (PA)

How come all the young kids and young people are all Kyle Busch fans?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Because kids are rowdy and like guys who stir the pot.

Jen (NJ)

Do you think Dalee can catch a break and get a to 10 Sat. night?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

A top 10, sure. A win, probably not.

Jeff (Canada)

What do you think is the future of the Montreal race? Sprint Cup?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

I'm hopeful they work things out and keep in on the NW sked next year. It's a fantastic great in one of North America's best cities. I wish it would get a Cup race, but that's not likely as long as ISC owns Watkins Glen.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will Mark Martin & Danica Patrick drive the 3rd Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in 2012?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

DP will in a few events before going to SHR full-time in 2013. But Martin won't unless they have the sponsorship for it.

Mitch (Wisc.)

Are you hearing that Danica will be going to JGR?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

No. Danica is running in NW for JR Motorsports next year and racing in Cup full-time in 2013 for SHR.

Greg (NYC)

Will Bristol's attendance be as weak on Saturday night as we saw in March? That was depressing.

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

I hear they are close to a sellout.

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Gotta run folks. Excellent chat today, living up to the best reality show title. Have a great week and enjoy the Bristol races. I'm out. Peace.
