Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (11:57 AM)

Hi, everybody. Thanks for stopping by. For the record, I'm actually early for a change. Shocker! Let's get started.

Greg (North Jersey)

How will the Jets' extra safeties be used this year? What role will Dwight Lowery, Emanuel Cook, and Brodney Pool have?

Rich Cimini
  (11:58 AM)

Not sure about Cook, but I think you'll see Pool and Lowery in the dime and quarter packages.

Adam (NJ)

Let's talk about someone NOT named Plaxico. On the Bengals TD drive on Sunday, Kyle Wilson made a hit at the goal line to keep the Bengals off the board (temporarily). Now, I turned to my mother (she, like me, is a die hard, and we were sitting in that horrible weather) and said "he NEVER makes that hit last year." his coverage has been significantly improved in man to man this year. Could Kyle be a big contributor on this D this year?

Rich Cimini
  (12:00 PM)

What, you're tired of the Plaxico coverage? It'll die down after this week...I think. Wilson is an interesting guy. Has he improved? Yes. But I haven't seen any 'wow' plays on the practice field. I'll be curious to see how he develops.

matt (pittsburgh pa)

Rich will plax get a long term deal after the season if he plays good football?

Rich Cimini
  (12:01 PM)

Don't forget, he'll be 35 next year, so no one is going to give him a long-term deal with a lot of guarantees. I suspect he'll be one-and-done with the Jets.

Brian (UK)

the organisation has been talking up Jamal Westerman, but is he really the answer to the pass rush? Do you see the pass rush getting any better this season, or do you think it will again hinder the jets?

Rich Cimini
  (12:03 PM)

I haven't seen much from Westerman, Brian. To me, he gets lost out there. If there's an injury to BT or Pace, the Jets will have a problem. Maybin isn't the answer. Like I've written many times, the Jets' pass rush is about scheme, not individual players.

Sean (Wilton, CT)

Hi Rich,How is Derrick Mason fitting into the offense? Also, will Wilkerson and Ellis be as effective in the middle as Jenkins (when healthy) was for the D?thanks,Sean

Rich Cimini
  (12:05 PM)

Mason looks real good, he knows how to get open in underneath zones. Ellis, I think, will have kind of a red-shirt year. He has a lot to learn and it wouldn't surprise me if he's inactive early in the year, especially with Tevaseu's improvement. Wilkerson will start and play on first and second down, some third down stuff.

nate (@dlee10) (nyc)

hey rich thanx for takin time to chat wit us

Rich Cimini
  (12:05 PM)

No problem, my man.

Austin (Richmond,VA)

Hey Rich, what's your take on the backfield situation? Will Greene become the workhorse and get 65% of the carries?

Rich Cimini
  (12:06 PM)

That's a pretty specific number, but yeah, I think he'll get around 250 carries. He needs to hold on to the ball. He fumbled yesterday in practice.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Why is Plaxico Burress going to Play for the New York Jets vs. the New York Giants when I heard that he Has a Very Bad Back?

Rich Cimini
  (12:06 PM)

He doesn't have a bad back. He's fine, it was just a little sore.

Rich (New Jersey)

I know it's only a pre-season game and they both meet for real on Dec. 24. I see a low scoring game with both teams not showing too much on offense. How do you see this game?

Rich Cimini
  (12:08 PM)

I see this game being wet ... rain in the forecast. You're right, neither team is going to show much, especially with 12/24 looming in the distance. Jets want to get their run game going, and they figure to see fewer blitzes than they saw last week vs. Cincy.

Bobby (Syracuse)

Hi Rich, two questions, I think this Jets defensive group is in good shape considering their continuity over the last three years and Leonard's comment communication is great and better than it ever's been, does this make a possibility of this defense reaching its full ability?Second, why haven't heard anything from Syracuse basket this year, what's going on up there?

Rich Cimini
  (12:10 PM)

When you say "reach its full ability," what do you mean? The defense finished first and third the last 2 years; a lot of teams would throw a parade if they finished that high. That said, I think there was a dropoff last season, especially on third down. Jets allowed more 20-yard plus plays on 3rd than any team in the league. Cuse hoops will rock, count on it.

Scott (Connecticut)

Rich. Good day. Was wondering your thoughts on Greg McElroy so far. Looks like he has potential to be a solid back-up in this league. I always like a back-up with toughness, smarts, and leadership ability, and he seems to have all of those intangibles save for a strong arm. I know he has strictly faced back-ups, but he got knocked around pretty good in the first preseason game and got off the deck to do some good things. Please give me your impression. Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (12:12 PM)

I agree with your assessment, Scott. I think of him as a poor man's Chad Pennington -- terrific intangibles, with a suspect arm (Chad's arm was better than GMCm though.) GMC improved in Week 2, making quicker reads and going through his progressions quicker than Week 1. He has the right makeup.

wstcoastjetsfan (los angeles)

after the Cincy game last week what do you think the odds are of Maybin and Satelle making the team? Am I right to believe Mauga is a lock, I think he's played great

Rich Cimini
  (12:13 PM)

You're right, Mauga is a lock. He's having a real nice camp. I think Satele has a good chance. Hard to say on Maybin. He arrived late, which doesn't help his chances. I think the coaches are still trying to figure out what he's all about.

Rob (Nutley, NJ)

Shonn Greene looked pretty good in that 1st quarter vs. the Texans. Can you tell us, based on all the practices you have attended, does he seem ready to make a leap forward? Any indictions of significant improvement?

Rich Cimini
  (12:14 PM)

I think with RBs, you go by what you see in the game, not practice. It's a production position. Based on that game, he looks good. Very curious to see him vs. Giants.

LJD4 (Harrison, NY )

What ratio of run to pass are we going to see this year? I've been accustomed to seeing 70/30, ground-n-pound.

Rich Cimini
  (12:16 PM)

Whoa, it hasn't been that 1-sided. It was almost 50-50 last season, and I believe it was about 64% running in 2009, when the coaches wouldn't let Sanchez do anything. I can see a slight tilt toward the pass this year, but the Jets will never be a "passing team," not under Ryan.

Luis (piscataway )

Rich, Thank you so much for the chat. We Jets fans appreciate it. Do you think it is possible that Jerricho Cotchery didn't like the way Rex Ryan managed the team? He is making less money in Pittsburgh, and will probably not be a No. 2 receiver there. Rex is certainly different than his two previous coaches Edwards & Mangini.

Rich Cimini
  (12:17 PM)

I haven't heard that, Luis. I think it was about pride and money. J-Co felt he was passed over when they got Edwards, then Holmes, then Burress. He decided enough was enough. Unfortunately, he got bad advice from his agent, who miscalculated the market.

John (CT)

Two games in and the only pressure we've seen on the QB is from two back up LBs (Maybin and Mauga)....time to panic now?

Rich Cimini
  (12:19 PM)

Never -- repeat, never -- panic based on what you see in the preseason...unless there's a devastating injury. The preseason is bogus; it has no bearing on the regular season.

Nick (Irene Dodger)

Thanks Rich for taking my question. Are the Jets done making roster additions? Whats going on the O line?

Rich Cimini
  (12:20 PM)

This will be a critical game for the OLine depth. They're taking a hard look at guys like Felix and Ducasse. If one or both takes a step back, the front office will bring in a vet to back up. They also like Matt Kroul, who is coming on after being switched from defense.

John (CT)

If the game is cancelled due to the hurricane, any chance it gets rescheduled?

Rich Cimini
  (12:23 PM)

Great question. the only time they could do it is Monday (assuming the storm still is pounding us on Sunday). But Monday would be tough because the Jets play Thurs night vs. Philly. But I'd be surprised if they didn't play Sat night

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, Do you think they are sold on Mulligan or do they sign Chris baker to be a more reliable blocking TE plus who do you think is going to replace Turner when they run the tackle eligible play?

Rich Cimini
  (12:25 PM)

Chris Baker? No way, Ira. That ship has sailed. I think Mulligan makes the team. I'm guessing they won't have an extra OLM as a TE, will just have to go with Mully and Keller.

Rich (Bayonne)

What is the true weakness of this team, in your opinion? The one spot that worries you, watching the team practice and play a couple of games

Rich Cimini
  (12:26 PM)

Interesting question, Rich. A couple of things: Depth, specifically at OL, DL and LB, and team speed in the middle of the defense.

Zach (NY)

Rich there have been a lot of guys nursing minor injuries (mangold, moore, pace, scott, greene, plax, etc.). Is there anyone, other than turner, that is in jeopardy of missing some real time, or not being at 100% for the season?

Rich Cimini
  (12:28 PM)

These are all minor injuries. I'd be a little worried about Moore, who is coming off hip surgery. He'll play Sat night, but he told me yesterday that up until 2 wks ago he wasn't sure if he was going to make it back for this game.

Pandalero (Phoenix)

What's your gut feeling on the potential ego issue at WR? They're all saying the right things now, but we know how that goes. Deep down these guys all want the ball.

Rich Cimini
  (12:30 PM)

I wrote a column about that the other day. They all want the ball, for sure. My gut tells me it'll work out. Mason and Plax are at the stage of their career where it's all about the ring. Holmes, hard to say. Remember, he was ticked off during the AFC title game when he sat for a few plays.

Mike (Massapequa Park, New York)

do you believe the jets running game will be more effective in the regular season than we have seen them play in the preseason?

Rich Cimini
  (12:31 PM)

Without question. The emphasis has been on the passing game because of all the new parts. The Jets will be able to run, don't worry.

Kevin (San Diego, CA)

Rich, how has Wayne Hunter looked at RT? Will we notice much of a dropoff in the running game or in pass protection now that Woody's gone?

Rich Cimini
  (12:32 PM)

I do think there will be a dropoff in the run game. When healthy, Woody was an outstanding run blocker. Hunter won't be a liability, but I don't think he'll blow people off the ball like Woody.

Sean M. (Raleigh,NC)

I've been hearing good things about Bilal Powell in practice with signs of explosiveness. So what are the chances he beats out McKnight or takes his spot eventually this season?

Rich Cimini
  (12:34 PM)

I talked to RB coach Anthony Lynn the other day about the McKnight-Powell battle, and he said BP is on Joe's heels. Frankly, I haven't been too impressed with BP, but Lynn said they're happy with him because of how quickly he has picked up the offense. He makes very few mental errors.

John (CT)

Any surprise veteran cuts you see coming for us?

Rich Cimini
  (12:37 PM)

Well, Sanchez, would a surprise... just kidding. It's a good question. Hmm, let's see. A surprise, huh? Brodney Pool. Donald Strickland. Both punters, Conley and Bryan. A stunner would be Brunell.

Oz (CT)

If the weather is really bad against the Giants, I wouldn't risk the starters into the second half or even late into the first half. Doesn't seem worth it. You think they'll hold them back if thats the case ?

Rich Cimini
  (12:38 PM)

No, it's football. As Plax said yesterday, it's not going to 7-11 for a Slurpee. Love that quote.

Evan (Albany)

How underwhelming has Bilal Powell been so far? Do you think Joe McNight can be a real contributer this year?

Rich Cimini
  (12:39 PM)

McKnight is an enigma. The coaches tell me they will have a small package of plays for him every week, but I also get the sense that they're frustrated with his decision making.

Kevin (the Bronx)

Rich, first go Cuse!!!!After seeing this receiving corps, do you now think its better than last seasons? At what point do we give this regime the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the personnel decisions?

Rich Cimini
  (12:42 PM)

I'm already on record as saying this WR corps is not as good as last year, and I know that wasn't received too well by some folks around the team. I don't know about benefit of the doubt, but say this about Tannenbaum & Co: They rarely miss on a player. They missed badly on Gholston, but can you name any other disasters? It's a pretty sharp front office, but I happen to think Edwards is better than Burress. We'll see.

Ryan (Florida)

What happened to Nick Bellore? Everybody was hyping this kid up and I haven't seen anything from. Mauga is definitely outshining him atleast...

Rich Cimini
  (12:43 PM)

You're right, Bellore has tailed off a bit. Now he's dealing with a calf injury. This game will be huge for him.

Rich (Long Island)

Hey Rich....Whos gonna be our Kicker....Do we really give a Folk

Rich Cimini
  (12:43 PM)

Like it or not, Folk is your man.

Chris (Washington, D.C.)

What are the Jets going to do to improve their anemic pass rush?

Rich Cimini
  (12:44 PM)

Call better blitzes. I'm serious. The pass rush is what it is. The coaches are gonna have to scheme it up.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, Once the Giants make their cuts i think there is a very good chance they will sign either Dodge or Weatherford. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (12:45 PM)

Something went down between Weatherford and the Jets that left a lot of raw feelings. I'd be surprised if they went back to him.

Adam (NJ)

Gonna piggyback on Ira, here. No Cumberland? I think he's been better than Mulligan this pre-season. He's not as good a blocker, but he adds a significant amount more than Mulligan in the passing game.

Rich Cimini
  (12:47 PM)

You're right, Cumby is better than Mully in the passing game. Let's be honest, a fire hydrant is better than Mully, but Mully can block. Unless they lose Keller, why do they need two pass-catching TEs on the field, especially when you have Holmes, Burress & Co?

Matt (Amagansett, NY)

Rich, all these questions really just add up to my big question. Super Bowl or not?

Rich Cimini
  (12:48 PM)

Right now, I'd say not.

Matt (Madison, NJ)

Hi Rich, Love the blog and the chats. Does this offense really have 28-30 point per game potenial as we have read about this week? Or is this offense only as good as Sanchez is? Good luck with the weather Satruday night!

Rich Cimini
  (12:49 PM)

The Jets aren't going to avg 28 ppg. If the Jets avg 28 ppg, I will buy a round for every Jets fan that shows up a local bar. You said it: The offense will be as good as Sanchez is ... and as good as Schotty coordinates it. They averaged 23 ppg last year. I can see something in the 24-26 range.

John (CT)

How has Cro looked compared to last year?

Rich Cimini
  (12:51 PM)

Looks good in practice. I don't think I've ever seen a more physically imposing/powerful CB as Cromartie. With him, it's all about staying focused. That's what makes Revis great; he never lets down.

Walter (New York)

Rex has always said, he wants this to be a place where everyone wants to play, but with Jerricho wanting out, Rhodes and Gholston saying their was favoritism and them striking out on free agents besides their own do you think outside players are really going to want to play for Rex for less? Plaxico seems to have went to the place with the most guaranteed money....

Rich Cimini
  (12:54 PM)

Interesting point, Walter. The guys who leave have an ax to grind. Rhodes, if I remember correctly, never said anything bad about Rex. I think his beef was with Pettine and Thurman. I do believe players want to play for Rex, but mostly, they want to play for the team that pays them the most. Rex's personality isn't going to put their kids through college or buy expensive sports cars.

david (boston)

do you expect the jets to resign braylon edwards next year if they lose plax

Rich Cimini
  (12:55 PM)

No.

Pandalero (Phoenix)

Please talk a bit about the locker room atmosphere with the absence on Cotchery, Ellis and Richardson.

Rich Cimini
  (12:55 PM)

I'll know more next week, when we're actually allowed in the locker room.

Mike (brooklyn)

who is winning the job for the second tight end? Mulligan or Cumberland

Rich Cimini
  (12:55 PM)

Mulligan.

Alex (Jersey Shore)

Hey Rich. Your basically with the team everyday so I'm wondering have you seen significant progress in Sanchez in practice and in the games compared to last season. Also, do you think he has the potential as an elite QB? Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (12:56 PM)

Don't think he'll ever put up Rivers or Brees numbers. He'll be elite if he wins a SB.

Mike (Jacksonville, Florida)

Which Rookie do you think will have the biggest impact this year?

Rich Cimini
  (12:56 PM)

Kerley.

Brian (NYC)

Rich - after a redshirt season last year, do you see Cumberland getting meaninful reps on offense? Seems to me that with Holmes, Plax, DMase, Keller, Cumberland and LT - thats quite a number of playmakers who can catch the ball. I hope Schotty can figure this all out.

Rich Cimini
  (12:57 PM)

Don't see it.

Jacob (Maryland)

Rich, do you think the amount of injuries so far (it seems there's a new one every day) has been greater than in past years? Or am I just projecting because of how much everyone is talking about the post-lockout world...

Rich Cimini
  (12:58 PM)

Don't have any concrete evidence. As far as the Jets, it seems about the same.

Rich Cimini
  (12:59 PM)

Well, that's it for me, guys. Thanks again. Two things: Check my twitter in a couple of minutes for an update on the practice tonight at Hofstra. And, please, everyone stay safe with Irene approaching. Rich
