Chat with Michael Collins

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How are you at Playing Golf?

Michael Collins
  (1:59 PM)

Hey everyone it's great to be back hanging out and chatting some golf stuff with y'all. Started out my first chat answering a question about my caddie experience. Might as well start off answering a question about my playing abilities. I'm like most caddies, a terrible golfer. I'm a 14 hcp but all my pro's that have played with me say I'm a 14 with an asterisk. In match play they'll only play me straight up. I'm a model of inconsistency!

GPBurdell (Missouri)

What are tour players really saying (off the record) about Freddie picking Tiger for the Presidents Cup

Michael Collins
  (2:01 PM)

Most guys love both Freddie and Tiger so much they're holding their tongues. I believe it's because most are ok with the pick and are just happy it wasn't up to them!

J.J. Sanchez (Monterey, CA)

Do you think Sergio will ever win a major? He seems to be back on track again!

Michael Collins
  (2:03 PM)

I believe Sergio can and will win again but until he wins a couple of regular tournaments, even overseas, I'm not convinced he'll ever win a major.

Marc (Charlotte)

Most important question of the chat. Gas or Charcoal?

Michael Collins
  (2:06 PM)

Charcoal. No question.

Greg (DE)

What do u think of Luke Donald's chances to win the fed ex cup?

Michael Collins
  (2:08 PM)

25%. The golf courses the playoffs are played on have to be firm and fast for Luke to have a realistic chance to win an event. Although Kuchar could win the cup without winning an event, talk about a disaster!

Craig (Murrieta, Ca around the corner from Fowlers Parents house

Do Caddies get airfare and hotel discounts through the PGA Tour or are they on their own?

Michael Collins
  (2:10 PM)

No, and most of the time the "tour discount" is worse than what you get when you don't tell the hotel you're with the tournament. A lot of players are now using Priceline cause they're sick of seeing caddies stay at the same hotel for 1/4 of the price!

Tyson Hickey (Laguna Niguel)

Have you ever thought about doing stand up

Michael Collins
  (2:11 PM)

Been a pro comic since '91. Caddying came by accident in '99. Ironic you should ask.

Jackson Terry (Wisconsin)

Thanks Mike for the Chat, We love Steve Stricker here in Wisconsin, do you think he will ever win a major? What do you think of golf in Wisconsin in general? We love it and have some great courses (Kohler, Milwaukee, Erin Hills, etc.)

Michael Collins
  (2:13 PM)

Love chatting with y'all too. Stricker has the game to win a major and I believe he'll win one in the next 3 years. We need to go back to Brown Deer Park in Milwaukee. Played Erin Hills last year. Awesome track but the mosquitos that showed up in the evening were the worst I've EVER seen, and I live in FL!

WD (Austin, TX)

Who is the best US player today?

Michael Collins
  (2:16 PM)

I'll give ya the two I could make the best arguments for. Dustin Johnson, Nick Watney. Both bombers, both have chill outer personalities, and both are killers.

Eric (Jersey City, NJ)

Will you still caddie and work for ESPN?

Michael Collins
  (2:18 PM)

No, last week caddying for one day was just an emergency situation. I'm with ESPN full time. Now I am gonna caddie for George Lopez later this year, but that's just a fun thing!

Marc (Charlotte)

What will take longer to complete, Ai Miyazato's swing or your answer to this question?

Michael Collins
  (2:19 PM)

I type with two fingers. You figure it out.

Ryan (san jose)

Did you see that Tiger is playing in the Frys.com Open?

Michael Collins
  (2:19 PM)

No, but I wouldn't be surprised if he played Vegas or Disney.

Gray Keller (Manhattan)

What are the chances of Adam Scott ending up in the winners circle this weekend?

Michael Collins
  (2:21 PM)

He's a bomber off the tee and has still been pretty consistent after his win at Bridgestone. I give him a better chance than two thirds of the field.

Gianni (Toronto, ON., Canada)

Had the oppourtunity of a lifttime last year. Got to hand out with a tour Caddie here at the Canadian Open. Q: why does the PGA treat caddies like second class citizens? Parking was 10 miles away, not allowed in the club house, bare bones amenities. I realize that the players are "THE SHOW" but I think people would be REALLY interested to learn more about the "teammates" who help the pro's out in so many ways. BTW...that week was the best time I have EVER had on a golf course.

Michael Collins
  (2:23 PM)

Because the tour still thinks the caddies stories aren't worth being told, and many believe the caddies of today are not anything like the caddies of the late 70's and early 80's. Most caddies now have financial advisors!

Michael Collins
  (2:24 PM)

Tiger is gonna play in the Fry's! Interesting development, different course for him to play. My apologies to the earlier chatter!

Cody (Houston)

Whos the best looking tour wife fans dont know about?

Michael Collins
  (2:25 PM)

Too many beautiful wives and girlfriends to pick just one. And do you like blondes or brunettes?!

steve (Greenville,SC)

TW just announced FRYS OPEN on his docket. Glad he is doing yhis .golf needs this guy so bad right now.

Michael Collins
  (2:26 PM)

Very true. But he needs reps so he can get back to playing 4 good rounds.

Dan (CA)

The whole "There are more deserving players than Tiger" is BS. The only guys that deserve it are the ones who play their way into the top 10 in Presidents cup points. Give me Tiger any day in match play over Bradley. And Fowler more deserving than Tiger? The dudes never even won a tournament.

Michael Collins
  (2:27 PM)

What's Tiger's match play record and what's Fowler's? Numbers don't lie. Tiger lost to Mike Weir!!! C'Mon Man!

Marc (Charlotte)

Are you in this new golf movie I saw a preview for the other day?

Michael Collins
  (2:28 PM)

No, not in the movie. I'm writing a review though later this week.

Eric (Jersey City, NJ)

Who do you play golf with when you get a chance to play yourself? Is it tour pros or your buddies from home?

Michael Collins
  (2:29 PM)

all of the above and I've played with fans I've met thru twitter and radio.

GPBurdell (Missouri)

What did most of the players do after Saturdays round? Weren't all the Airports were closed? Hurricane Party? Hunker down with a pizza and beer in their hotel?

Michael Collins
  (2:30 PM)

most guys got out before the airports closed, thats why DJ's winning press conference was only 20 minutes long. he was RUNNING!

Shoshana (stuck in Baltimore (thanks Irene))

So who is on Tiger's bag for the Presidents Cup?

Michael Collins
  (2:30 PM)

question now is, who's on Tiger's bag at Frys!

Jeremiah Long (Melbourne, FL)

How hard is it to get a job as a caddy now. I have read you can't just hang out in the parking lots on Mondays like you use to be able to.

Michael Collins
  (2:33 PM)

That's exactly right. Nowadays most guys make moves BEFORE they even get rid of their current caddies. A lot of agents make calls and some guys just bring out friends or family members that could use a job. That's why most new guys try the Nationwide Tour first. But the money is not great out there.

Shoshana (stuck in Baltimore (thanks Irene))

Thoughts on Tiger adding Fry's would've thought Disney or McGladry

Michael Collins
  (2:34 PM)

Hopefully he adds all three. It'd be good for his game, but since he always does the opposite of what I say... I hope he doesn't play at all the rest of the year!! ;)

John (Denver)

Most common tip you hear the pros giving the hacks (like me) during the pro-ams?

Michael Collins
  (2:34 PM)

Take one more club

George (Missori)

Tiger offers you the job as his caddie. do you accept? (and yes, I just saw a pig fly past my window)

Michael Collins
  (2:35 PM)

No. Catch that pig!! I love bacon.

Cody (Houston)

Caddies make a big difference. Just look at the step up in Nick Watneys consistency with chad Reynolds and Webb Simpson with Paul Tesori.

Michael Collins
  (2:36 PM)

Adam Scott is doing pretty good too.

Nick (Louisville)

Can Furyk when the fed ex cup again ? I think he switched to a longer putter recently but I barely caught any of the Barclays Tournament.

Michael Collins
  (2:37 PM)

This year, no. Next year, 10% chance. After that... NOPE.

Jeremiah Long (Melbourne, FL)

What separates guys who are on the Nationwide tour for years from the guys on PGA tour?

Michael Collins
  (2:40 PM)

Their head. Guys that just can't stay out on tour but play great on the Nationwide tour, don't truly believe in their hearts that they can succeed on the PGA tour. They may say all the right things to the cameras and reporters but you can see the guys who play to win and play to make cuts. The guys who play to make cuts are like dogs that chase cars... they don't last very long.

Shoshana (stuck in Baltimore (thanks Irene))

What's the hardest part of caddying for a tour player?

Michael Collins
  (2:42 PM)

For me it's keeping my mouth shut when a player hits a bad shot and starts yelling at me. I know he's not really mad at me and just needs to vent but sometimes my comedian side wants to come out and say some inappropriate comment back. Can't do that if the team is gonna succeed.

Michael Collins
  (2:43 PM)

Every player has his quirks so knowing each guys "thing" and helping use that to get the most out of his game is a fine line.

Justin Timberlake (via mobile)

Will Tiger play my tournament? I'll do a free shot at Tiger Jam!

Michael Collins
  (2:44 PM)

you still owe me $10 for your Dodgers loss in the playoffs to my Phillies. I didn't forget. Get me my money and maybe I'll make a call!!

Cody (Houston)

No need to name names but do caddies bet on tourneys?

Michael Collins
  (2:45 PM)

No. They used to but now that the tour has come in and said it's not ethical (and they're right even though it hurts to admit that) so they banned it.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (@CheeseheadSN)

I find the FedEx Cup confusing. I understand that the PGA Tour wants to drum up interest in the end of the season but I am not sure that the average fan cares about going from 125 golfers to a winner over a four week period. I actually think people would rather see larger fields with an exclusive tournament for the top 20 golfers at the end. Either way, why doesn't the PGA Tour simplify the FedEx Cup so that it is easier to follow?

Michael Collins
  (2:47 PM)

That's the biggest complaint of almost every writer and media person around. Tour keeps trying to make too many people like the sponsors happy. Make it easy for the fans, popularity will soar and the sponsors $ will follow. It ain't brain surgery.

George (Missouri)

Real reason why Tiger chose Frys.com? Stanford plays at home against Colorado that weekend. Time to be Announced though.

Michael Collins
  (2:48 PM)

So Tiger misses the cut on purpose so he can make it to the game?

John (California)

Scott almost came in last place this week, Williams didnt help him when he went 6 over on 5 holes and shot 77 nor when he 3 putted from 5 ft at the PGA after williams helped him with that first putt.Williams never helped again on line the rest of the week. Scott has won just as many tourneys with Williams as without in the last year. He had his game back way before Williams came along.

Michael Collins
  (2:50 PM)

That's not what Adam said after the Bridgestone. And a good caddie turns an 82 into a 77.

Shoshana (stuck in Baltimore (thanks Irene))

Who are the 5 best and worst guys to caddie for on tour (using whatever criteria you want)?

Michael Collins
  (2:53 PM)

Worst guys are cheap to their caddies. Best guys treat their caddies like family. There are guys I'm friends with off the course that I'd never caddie for on the course cause they're different guys on the course and not respectful to their caddies. Some people forget the saying, "do unto others". Being the boss doesn't make you a better person than me. And vice versa

Eric (Jersey City, NJ)

Whose more likely to win during the current play-offs: Ricky Fowler or Steve Marino?

Michael Collins
  (2:54 PM)

Fowler, but not by much.

Jeremiah Long (Melbourne, FL)

I think twitter has really given fans a chance to see what life is really like on tour with all the players that participate. Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (2:55 PM)

I think it is awesome that Twitter and YouTube (Ben Crane) has given us a chance to see some of these guys like they really are and not just the guy on tv hitting a golf ball. I wanna show more of what these guys are like off the course cause alot of them are hilarious and cool to hang out with.

John (California)

OH, ok so a good caddie should never have his player shoot 77 in the first place,,,Right

Michael Collins
  (2:57 PM)

Again, you think a caddie says, "Hey man, everyone is hitting it right down the middle of the fairway. You should snap hook this left OB and let's show em how to make a great triple!" Are you that small minded?!

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

you think freddy would have made the same decision if he was the captain of the ryder cup? i say no. presidents cup is fun and all but just doesn't have the prestige of the ryder.

Michael Collins
  (2:58 PM)

Interesting take. I think he would have waited til the last moment to make the decision, but I also believe he knows something we don't know about what Tiger is gonna do leading up to the Presidents Cup

Shoshana (stuck in Baltimore (thanks Irene))

What do vets thing of young guys who come along and get a lot of hype and endorsement deals before winning anything?

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Same as going from wood to metal, wound balls to two piece. It's a sign of the times. You can either hate it and fall behind or embrace it and move forward.

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

Again!! Time has flown by. Thanks so much for hanging out with me and asking some great questions. You can email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.com and I'll answer some questions in time. Or you can follow me on twitter, @ESPNCaddie. Thanks again, it was great!!
