Just finished taping the AFC Preview on the Football Today Podcast...let's keep that momentum rolling
Which playoff team from last year is most likely to miss the playoffs this year?
Seattle of course! Ever seen T Jackson play? He is awful. Actually, he is the worst starting QB in the NFL. I doubt Chicago makes it again. Will be tough on KC too.
People are getting too caught up in the $100M figure attached to Vick's contract. His $40M in guarantees is about on target for what you pay a franchise QB. That being said, if I were the Philly GM, I don't think I would have paid that much so soon. Saw a lot of question marks from Vick this preseason + his style will get him injured far more than other franchise QBs. Thoughts?
Very much agree. Could have still Franchised him after this season too. Poor decision maker (on the field). One strike away from huge suspension (off the field). And injury prone.
How in the world can anyone call Sanchez or Eli "elite" after that display on Monday night?
It was terrible. I was Tweeting (@WilliamsonNFL) at the time that I was mad at myself for watching that game instead of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Sanchez isn't close to Elite. Eli is a solid starting QB and probably a Top 10 guy at the position.
Why don't the vikings give peterson a new contract before start of the season?
I guess they might, but why not just let him play this one out and then Franchise him a year from now?
Is Colt McCoy the real deal or is he just having a good preseason?
Having an excellent preseason. New O system is huge. Some developing weapons. He has very much impressed me. Still REALLY worry about him when the Clev weather hits in December.
Could Indy's defense become average, which is all we really ask for.
Really like their DL pass rushers across the board now with Nevis and Harris in the fold. But predicting this D to be middle of the road is prob too optimistic. Needs to play with the lead.
Usually don't take sides on contract issues but I think Titans are right not to give CJ too much ncash. They 2-3 years away from contending and odds are CJ will be pretty much used up in 3 years. The money needs to be spent to rebuild the team.
I feel ya. That is a tough one. Smaller RB who has logged a lot of touches of late too. But they are a much different team without him as well. Needs to be the right contract.
What do you think of the Cards LB corpse, it's Achilles heel last year?
I think Washington will be an excellent player-their poor man's L Timmons. I also like the addition of Bradley at ILB-much different player than Washington. But those OLBs are a big problem.
True or False: Bryant McKinnie in Baltimore will be the biggest steal of free agency when we look back at the end of the season
False. If anyone can motivate him, it is Former 'Canes Reed & Lewis. But he just doesn't play hard or care. Still, he does have the chance to make Balt better with Oher moving to RT.
What do you think of Oakland's pick up on T. Pryor? Do you think he'll stay a QB or eventually move to WR? (since we all know DHB has no future!)
I like the pick up. Spent a lot to get him, but OAK didn't have a 4th round pick to mortgage. We don't need to even know his position right now. Have him do a little of both. See if he can catch. See how well he learns to read Ds. Bring him along slow. Total redshirt year now for Pryor.
Matt can you please tell everyone to give up the obsession with Mike Vick? He had 6 really good games and has leveled off since!
I would have to go back and look, but was it really only 6? Kolb played quite a bit and Vick sure did level off. I have my share of criticism for Vick-and there are several QBs that I prefer, but he is one dangerous dude.
Do you see any of the steelers young CBs (Keenan Lewis, Crezdon Butler) challenging Bryant McFadden for a starting spot at any stage this year? No pressure but it is my birthday so wud be very upset if you don't answer!
Well Happy Birthday Rory! Can't say I have seen much from those youngsters to think a change is in order.
Everyone is down on Best, but he put up good numbers when he was healthy. I think he could have a good season this year. ur thoughts?
Certainly could have a real good season. Have to use him right now. Can't be pounding him between the OTs over and over. But the Lions are going to THROW! A lot. And that suits Best very well.
Matt: Who are your impact Defensive Rookies? JJ Watt will start right away, huge motor and has like 4 betted passes this pre-season already. This is something we have never done well in the past. I think he will be in the top three or so, your thoughts? Thanks........MM
MM! How have you been? Have been fiddling with my Week 1 Rookie Report. V Miller is my DROY prediction. High on Watt too. Also Smith in Balt and Dareus. Kerrigan as well.
M-Dub...are you at all worried about the Cowboys' O-Line? They could be turnstiles, in the division alone.
Very much so. They are MUCH more athletic and young up front now. But there has to be growing pains. Romo is going to take a lot of hits. Can he withstand it?
Aside from Suh and Ngata, who are the best interior pass-rushers in the game right now?
S Rogers is excellent. Babineaux. Seymour. J Smith (DE though). Prob missing a few.
Mdub, do you think the Eagles will franchise Desean, or lock him up for something like 5 years, 50 milll, 20 guarenteed.
He scares me too because he is just so slight. I might Franchise him and re-asses the situation down the road.
You forgot the best interior pass rusher in the NFL, Justin Tuck
Good call. Obviously he is a DE, but moves inside.
Seems nat'l media is killing the Dolphins, many predicting less than 6 wins. I think they'll surprise people and compete with Jets for 2nd place. What think you?
I agree with you. We JUST recorded the AFC Preview Football Today podcast. It should be ready for download soon. Listen in for more details.
Mathews was a disappointment in his rookie year (injury), does he come back stronger this year or does Tolbert steal his TD's?
Tolbert is so reliable and tough-should continue to have a substantial role. But Mathews can be great. I bet as the season goes along, Mathews gets more and more touches if his body can handle it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Eagles have 1/3rd of their salary cap tied into QB and CB positions. Tell me that doesn't scare you of salary cap hell.
I can't confirm that, but it also doesn't sound too far fetched. And yes, frightening.
Concerned about Foster's hammy? Apparently there is a twit pic of it.
Not a Doc, but one of my best buds is a Doc and has 1st pick in our fantasy draft. Told him to check out the Tweet. If Doc pulls the trigger on Foster at #1, then I am betting it looked good!
ESPN Mag has Skins at 3-13. Really?
Really. I will certainly take the OVER. Really like their D and Shanny will coach up so-so O talent. I would say 6 or 7 wins.
Phil Rivers is massively overrated, he puts up great stats against an inferior division that he still can't win with a flubber arm that can only be hid in a dome or calm west coast weather, he would never put up his stats on the east coast or get the hype he does
Nope. Not at all. He is my MVP prediction this season. Total superstar.
What are your thoughts on Branden Albert? Should he stay at LT? Or would he be better on the right side?
Ideally, Gaither would be the LT and Albert should be a very good RT. Still improving, but as LTs go, I see him as middle of the road.
What is your prediction on the Eagles record this season?
Picking them to win the division. Will go with 10-6
What's the deal with the 49ers Oline?
It is really terrible. Davis has been a massive disappointment. I am fine with the OGs, but the rest has been a mess. Huge problem.
what do you think Saints will do this year
Got them winning the South, presently 4th on my Power Poll. Big time contender. Can't wait to see them in Green Bay a week from tomorrow.
What's your relationship status?
Married. Sorry-off the market
any UFAs that you're surprised are still out there?
Was on KC radio this morning. We were both shocked that Waters hasn't been picked up. It seems like more players should be coming to mind.
I know your big on Nicks but I went with Manningham (obviously a few rounds later). He's gonna put up big numbers right?
I think he will. Manningham is my WR21 for FF. They should throw plenty. Quality QB.
What's your prediction for the Packers? Do they have a chance to repeat?
Certainly have a chance. Have them 2nd on my Power Poll behind the Pats. Should win division. Not much to criticize them about really.
Where does Greshem finish the year among TE's? wut r ur thoughts on him and Kendricks?
Said on Twitter a few days ago that I expect Gresham to lead the Bengals in receptions. Very Dalton-Friendly player. Could be a breakout season for him. Kendricks too could have a very impressive year. In a dome. Accurate QB. Innovative coordinator. Tons of ability as a receiver.
I agree that Albert would be better at RT than left, but his best position would still be LG. He was one of the best pulling guards I've ever seen in college. Probably won't have, though, with, Asomoah and Hudson inside.
Well said. Can't argue with that.
Can Collins really pick up the Colts system in 2 weeks? Why didn't Polian run to him as soon as Peyton said Neck. Surgery.?
Should have gotten a vet in there sooner. Maybe Collins dragged his feet on the decision after already retiring. I would expect a scaled down playbook.
Packers O-line did struggle with Colts pass rush last week is that the one area that could undo the Packers?
It could. DL depth worries me too. But they have a lot of options with the OL. Most of it is just unproven.
Do you think Carolina has any expectations for Cam this year besides don't turn the ball over, make 3 to 4 plays a game with your legs, and let Williams/Stewart carry the load?
Well said. And learn. Learn. Soak it all up. Get a real good feel for the game at this level...esp as a pocket passer.
Matt, JAGS D improved with Roth, Session, Landry, Coleman and the POZ? I think with AluAlu and Kinghton in the middle the D and the free agents, D can be top 10, agree?
Yes and No. I agree that it improved. And I like those guys you mentioned-esp the DTs. But I still think Pass D is a huge problem. Top 16 D
Do you see Peyton Hillis having a better season then last year?
Will be tough. Won't sneak up on anyone. Could see a lot of receptions though. I really don't trust him to stay healthy either with his running style. Not being critical though-big fan.
Does Stephen Jackson have enough left in him to provide a balanced attack for the Rams?
While I think S-Jax has very much declined from where he once was, I do think he still fits the criteria that you mention. Has to become Bradford's O now though-not Jackson's.
Could Phillips and Rolle be the best safety tandem by seasons end?
Wow. Hadn't thought of it, but that is awfully strong. Washington will be tough there too. Prob SD as well.
Better receiver in 4 years; Maclin or DeSean Jackson?
Maclin. More consistent. Plays much bigger.
What kind of year is Jones Drew setting himselft up for?
Just talked about that on podcast. Had been bashing him and thinking that he was at the Beginning of the End for his career. But reports now are that he is doing quite well. Hope he plays tonight to see. But he is still quite young. Could have another huge season. Easy guy to root for too.
Can you see the Broncos winning 8 games this year?
More like 6
Is Mercedes Lewis an Elite 2 way Tight End?
No, but he is quite good. I don't throw around the word "Elite". Jason Witten is a Elite 2 Way TE.
At what point in the season will Pete Carroll drop Jackson in favor of Whitehurst?
Shocked it hasn't happened already. There must be something Whitehurst is doing wrong behind the scenes.
Good. Not Elite. Took a slight step backwards last year too. Could get slightly phased out with the wealth of WRs PGH has.
lol 2 way tight end... that sounds wrong in so many levels..
Just when I thought that Jeremy Trueblood was the greatest penalty taker in the NFL, along comes James Lee with 4 penalties in a quarter and a half. Feeling good about the Bucs RT!
Whole OL is a problem, but RT in particular. Freeman and Blount an make up for bad OL play, but that is a tough formula to win with.
Assuming Matt Stafford stays healthy his ceiling has to be pretty high right?
Very high ceiling. Can be Elite...and I don't throw that word around very often.
Is this the year Knowshon Moreno lives up to his hype?
Doubtful. I don't see special qualities. Could be improved. But I doubt he ever lives up to such a high first round pick.
Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil, best sack tandem in NFL this year?
Very well could be. Wow. But with their Run D, how often can Den put their opponent in 3rd and Long? Steelers & Colts might also have something to say about best tandem.
How does J. JOnes do this year
Julio Jones is my OROY prediction.
Jason Pierre Paul is rumored to be up to 295 pounds? thats Mario Williams Julius Peppers territory? I thought scouts thought he was Jevon Kearse? Will the weight help or hurt him?
Seriously? He looked more filled out to me but that number surprises me. He certainly has the build to add a lot of strength and weight though. Will check it out.
Do you think Javon Ringer can be a solid back if CJ does a VJax?
Solid. Unspectacular. Pretty high on Harper though.
Which Steve Smith has more fantasy value?
Gotta be the one in Carolina. Neither is healthy, but the Eagles version is less healthy.
So you think John Fox will blitz Von Miller a lot come the regular season?
Yes. A ton. And he will line up at DE on passing downs.
If you were the Seahawks would you give up a future 1st or 2nd for Ryan Mallett?
Not a first. A second? Sure.
JAGS starting QB week 5, Garrard or Gabbert?
Assuming everyone stays healthy, I am betting that it is Gabberts job for about the last month of the season.
Matt, doesn't the fact that Knowshon is in the John Fox "Run First, Run Second, Run Third" offense help his numbers this year?
Yes, but McGahee will be a big factor and Fox likes to use 2 RBs. Plus, same OC from last year-and Den could be losing a lot-will prob throw more than many think. But Moreno is also the Passing Down RB
why do you hate all jets and anything to do with them?
Here we go....
Best QB coach in the NFL is Bill Belichick, not a question just a rarely known fact
Hmmm...I like it
Hey Matt, I love your feedback on Von Miller. So does Denver still finish last in AFC West?
Just said on the podcast that I was torn (coin flip) between DEN and OAK for 4th place in the AFCW..but I went 1. SD 2. KC 3. DEN 4. OAK
hey matt your thoughts on beck vs grossman.
Both look surprisingly good. I would go with Beck. More accurate. Less mistakes. More consistent/reliable.
Which talented WR in a terrible situation has the better season: Sidney Rice or Michael Crabtree?
Rice. Much better player. Will be SEA's #1 option at least. In SF, I bet Davis (for sure) is ahead of Crabtree and Edwards is too.
Dareus or WIlkerson, better career fromt his years rookie crop at DT?
Dareus. Really like this guy. Wilkerson will play 3-4 DE-like Watt, who is another guy I am real high on. Same with Luiget.
so say something good about the jets. i dare you.
Very well coached.
Do you Think Chad Henne can rebounmd from last season and can carry the Dolphins to the Wildcard spot i Playoff?
Yes, I think he rebounds, but no-no playoffs for MIA
Which coach has the better chance to draft their college QB Harbaugh or Carroll?
Both have a REALLY good chance!
Had I known Dareus was going to play effectively in the NFL in the 330s their is an argument he should have went first overall to the Panthers over Newton, agreed?
Agreed. MUCH safer. Huge need position. I actually said that before the draft that I would have taken Dareus and then traded for someone like Orton. But I can't blame a team that takes a shot on a talented QB-they make the world go round.
How can you say Beck is more reliable when he hasen't played in a NFL game since 2007?
His style of play is more reliable. Less of a risk taker. Good Rex/Bad Rex=Unreliable
"Had I known Dareus was going to play effectively in the NFL in the 330s "If you knew, then you'd be a GM.
Well, he was the 3rd pick in the draft. I think many believed that he would be an effective player!
Rams schedule maybe not so bad? Giants, Baltimore, Dallas - Rams could win 2 0f 3?
They could. Open at home vs. Philly too I believe. That is winnable. STL wins the West-easily
