Happy Friday everyone - thanks for joining me. It's a switch this week I know. Crazy things happen leading up to the NFL season. But glad you could be here. Let's get to the questions - lots of drafts coming up this holiday weekend!
Drafting August 31st PM. Have 10th & 11th pick in 10 team standard league snake draft. Have not seen Jones Drew take a snap in preseason and he is suppose to play on Thursday in the final preseason game. If he is still there for my 10th / 11th pick do I select Jones Drew over McCoy and or or Mendenhall? Is MJD's knee a concern? Do you think he will be productive (RB#1) in Week #1 and beyond? Don't let me down here......
CHris: Congrats to first poster - so you get my response...but part of me will direct you to the piece I wrote on MJD where you can see why I like him this year. Of course I can't say there's ZERO concern, but I'm not as worried as most. And he looked decent last night, almost broke a run. Did get stuffed on a couple others. But let's face it, it was his first game. I take him over the others. That's just my feeling.
Hello Stephania? Hoping to get my early question answered. Have a meeting at time of your chat. What are your thoughts on Steve Smith(Philly)? When do you think he will be playing?
Greg: Boo - meetings. But you get an answer to save for later. Smith will not play in Week 1 by all suggestions. Coming off microfracture it's prudent to bring a guy along slowly. I'm not sure he plays sooner than he would have if on PUP list but he does get to practice with team and they can feel their way along. I highly doubt we see him before a month into the season and frankly, better for him if he doesn't rush.
PPR league: Mario Manningham or Percy Harvin?
Manningham. Playing in slot. Will be frequent target. Like Harvin but a little concerned about migraine issue and just love Manningham in that role.
No one is saying much about Miles Austin's hammy? Maybe that means it's nothing, but I'm worried. What's the latest and will it be a problem for Week 1??
Bob: True - but I don't think Dallas is making too much of it either. Jason Garrett hasn't expressed much concern and it sounds like they would rather keep him low activity until needed and protect him. So yes, expect him Week 1.
Hello Stephania. Arian, Arian, Arian, Arian. What do we do with this guy? I have second pick in my Draft on Saturday, please tell me u have good news?
Drew: There's not going to be any more news on him I'm afraid before your draft. At 2nd pick, I'm probably (and I can't say for sure b/c I drafted twice last night and it was late in round) going with Chris Johnson - but I'm nervous about it given no football activity for him. I love Foster but I would PLAN - if it were me - not to have him Week 1, just in case, then hope that he's in good shape going forward.
I haven't hear too much news on Antonio Gates lately...hoping my early TE pick doesn't have a foot flare-up...
Dan: I just completed a piece on him which will post later today. There is going to be some concern about a flare-up, it's the nature of the condition. But everyone's eyes open in San DIego and they will take precautions to rest him a lot during the week and hope to maximize what they get on Sunday.
Any news on the severity of R. Jennings knee?
Alex: Still a bit of a mystery. He was on crutches (don't like that) after 3rd preseason game and it was simply being called a knee sprain, no specifics. DNP last night. Hard to know whether this is a 1-2 week thing or many weeks. I'm certainly not targeting him if I draft right now without more info.
With sooooo many RB having injury concerns, which of the top 20 RB do you feel most comfortable drafting?
Alex: AP. Just because he's got a good track record for a few years. But as we all know, every time they step on the field, huge injury risk. Just part of the game, esp RB.
Hey Stephania, what are your thoughts on Darren McFadden's durability this year? He already has an injury, just want your thoughts.
Spencer: His current issue was a fracture though of the orbital bone (around the eye). Kind of unusual - doesn't really facotr into my wear and tear thoughts. But he is a guy who has had bilateral turf toe, hamstring injuries, etc. Great when on field but I don't expect him to make it all 16 games.
Is Hanley Done for the year? could use his roster spot now that its playoff time.
Jeff: You must be in playoffs. Certainly would not plan on Hanley since they are now talking "instability" in his shoulder. Possible offseason surgery (but not finalized). Sounds unlikely we see him again this year.
Any new on the injury to Wes Welker? I nkow the Patriots reputation for keeping things quiet...
AStafford: No one's saying anything - but him being dressed last night says a lot, even though he didn't play. I take it as a sign he's doing OK.
Big Series for the Giants starting tonight. Any concerns about Dallas Clark other than the Manning issues. Feel free to comment on Manning as well.
Tony: Always room for a fellow SFer. No huge concerns about Clark. Looked good to me when I was at camp and was doing everything. Will wear a splint but it's not limiting him. Adam Schefter reporting today that there is a sense Collins starts Week 1. That wouldn't surprise me - if they weren't worried they wouldn't have bothered to bring him in. Problem is there's no way to know what type of timeframe we're talking about, not sure they know. So in my mind, all receivers for Colts take a hit as a result. Bummer.
You mentioned Percy's migraine issue. Being that he announced that he has not had a migraine in months do you believe the migraines are football induced?
Shane: Certainly don't have the knowledge to suggest that. And it sounds like he's been working extensively with medical personnel to help get migraines under control, but it is worth noting that people with migraines, IF they suffer a concussion, can have a longer recovery. So there's a potential relationship - but it's not easily defined.
Stephania: Are you on the Jimmy Graham bandwagon?
Max: Yes. Brees clearly loves him. Which means I do too.
Jermichael Finley's ankle - any updates?
Dave: Nothing major to report. Think the plan was keep him out of last preseason game for safety. All indications are full speed ahead for season opener.
How do you feel about Stafford? Will the Detroit O-line keep him alive this year? I also have Brees, I should feel comfortable trading him in Week ___ if Stafford is still playing.
Bill: I love Stafford this year. Exhibit A: drafted him in my very competitive work league last night. But if I have Brees, not sure I'm trading him, unless I'm desperate for help at another position- and then I might be trading a well-performing Stafford instead.
Stephania, I remember an article by you in Sept 2010 about Dez Bryant as an injury risk. BOOM! Dez goes down multiple times with injury last season. In a full-keeper dynasty league, who do you value more? Bryant for his youth or Miles Austin for his stability? Seem equally valuable in fantasy points...
OK Bad boys: First, I appreciate that you remember an article from Sept 2010. And while I never celebrate injury, I think I can say with Dez it certainly looked like he was in line for future problems...He does have a lot of upside - probably more than Austin - but more risk than I typically like on my team. Austin probably who I go with for that reason.
What's Pierre Thomas' status for week 1?
Steve: He'll play. Expect him and Ingram to share carries, including goal-line.
What's the news on Vince Young's injury last night?
Ed: Day-to-day, hamstring strain.
Will Lance Moore be all systems go Thursday Night at Lambeau ?
Joel: Moore back in practice late this week so expect he plays next Thursday. So far no hint as to anything different.
When do you see Peyton playing...what week?
Gus - and everyone else who is asking: NO idea. If I guessed, it would be just that - a guess. I could say Week 2 or Week 5 and it wouldn't mean a thing. There is no info as to what are his specific deficits at this point, whether he still has weakness, where it is if present, what, in fact, is holding him back. So there is no reasonable way to predict. None.
What are your thoughts on Maclin's illness? Is it going to be hard for him to overcome the weight loss?
Matt: He says he's back to original weight. Don't know if that's so. But the big issue for me was his ability to be football ready after being so ill. Initially Reid said he did not think he would be ready, he wasn't in shape (understandably) but recently hinted at him being available Week 1. I still think even if he plays he's not getting a full complement of snaps so I'd be cautious early.
Hi Stephania, question about Austin Collie: Is it true that there is no relationship between past concussions and future risk?
Dan: So I was recently in Pittsburgh at their concussion management clinic working on a piece (which will air next month) and what they are saying is that as of now, with all research to date, there is no definitive evidence that a) past concussion predicts future ones or b) if you have fully recovered (key is full recovery) from a concussion that you are any more likely to suffer another. Every person must be evaluated individually within the context of his/her health and history to decide about going forward with sport or other activity after suffering concussion. No universal "rules"
Would you be as unconcerned about Hanson's shoulder injury as the Braves appear to be? I have him in a keeper league and I'm a bit concerned we're going down the Josh Johnson road with this. What do you think?
Rob: Well, reason for some concern is legit. He reportedly has a small undersurface cuff tear (but that is common amongst throwers so not necessarily earth shattering). Key is not pushing him too hard. They still hope he can pitch within a few weeks but I think the message is if there is discomfort, do not push it.
How is Moreno looking this preseason? With his past injury history is he good to go this year?
Tim: So far, so good. But I consider him an injury risk based on his history of soft tissue (hamstring) injuries. Also expect McGahee to get many goal-line carries.
Following up on Austin Collie: he's listed as "questionable" to start the season due to knee and foot issues. Any updates? In a PPR league, is he worth the risk over somebody like Danny Amendola?
Kelvin: Here's where knowing Colts and how they report injuries helps. They tend to list anyone who has missed even a few snaps at practice as questionable, so it doesn't surprise me. Yet there's been no hint that either of these is an issue. I think Manning not being in lineup potentially hurts him as much as anything. It is worth keeping an eye on what he does in practice this week thougn (Collie).
hi stephania, i have best(det) as my rb2. is his turf toe healed? chances he makes it thru yr. thanks
Mike: Another guy I worry about. Long injury history at Cal and then the feet last year. He says they're better - but I want proof that he can run on the tirf for a year before I believe. And he already suffered a concussion preseason. Like his flash but worry about him.
Roddy for Mendy? Have Vick, charles, mendy, BGJE. WR) Holmes, havin starting. DO I trade Mendy for Roddy to bolster my WR corps?
Patrick. I would. White has huge potential and Atl will pass a lot this year. Actually think Turner's value goes down.
What can we expect from Chris Johnson health-wise? I mean, last year Revis immediately strained his hammy following a holdout. With CJ at a more physically demanding position, what injuries should we be most concerned about if/when they pop up?
Steve: I think the biggest worry is some type of soft tissue strain when he gets into "football activity" after not doing 11 on 11 drills, making cutbacks, etc. Prob hamstring more than anything. Obviously he could be fine - but I'd like to see him get through the first two weeks before I start to relax.
Shin Soo Choo just went on the DL but my DL spots are already taken by Nelson Cruz and Tommy Hanson. I have a 1st round bye so I don't need any of them NEXT week. If I need to eventually drop someone, who do I drop? Choo? Hanson? Who is least likely to help me?
Jeff: Worry the most about Cruz. Recurrent serious hamstring injury. Hanson could give you a start or two. Maybe. Choo I expect back. But Cruz would not surprise me if he's done - and given his hsitory I'd be nervous.
When do you expect R.Weeks to return for Brewers?
David: Sounds like rehab assignment next week. I'm certainly impressed with how far he's come - but want to see him in game, reactionary situations to make sure the ankle holds up to that.
Brian Wilson for the year? Who gets the most saves for the Giants down the stretch?
TJ: Wilson throwing from flat ground. Perhaps another week? But the mound will be a big test...until then I expect the Giants continue to mix it up, more Affeldt than anyone.
Do you think Nate Burleson can put up wr3 sleeper type numbers this year with a healthy Stafford?
Howard: Yes. Already have seen some nice plays between the two in the preseason.
Injury-prone Joseph Addai.....pick up Delone Carter?
Karyn: I would. It's unclear how it shakes out with Donald Brown too but there's certainly been enough buzz about Carter since camp to make you think they'd use him.
Can you please comment on Lee Evans injury status? Have not much for over a week.
Mike: There's not much out there other than that he was in a protective boot for a while - but all hints are that it's not serious. Doesn't sound as if anyone is concerned at this point about missed time.
JF: Going to see a specialist this weekend - that's really all we know. Hard to project off of that but there should be updates early next week. Will miss SUnday start of course.
OK everyone - thanks so much for coming. We're one hour closer to the weekend!! Good luck to everyone in fantasy drafts this weekend and to fantasy baseball owners nearing playoffs. Stay healthy!!I'm on Twitter @Stephania_ESPN so follow for updates and article links...
