Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. I'm headed to Atlantic City tomorrow for the Gamboa-Ponce De Leon fight but HBO also has the Vitali Klitschko-Tomasz Adamek fight and ESPN3.com has McCloskey-Prescott, so it's a good fight weekend. New notebook should posted shortly and there are several news stories and blogs from the week, not to mention an updated schedule. And, of course, next week is Mayweather-Ortiz, so we have plenty to discuss. Let's get to it.

Marcos (Chicago)

Who in your opinion would you like to see Erik Morales fight on September 17?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Definitely a bummer Matthysse dropped out. Not sure there is anyone of top caliber that can come in on a week's notice unfortunately. So I really don't know. It will be a disappointment whomever it is I would imagine. So Golden Boy will just do the best that it can.

Tim (Redondo Beach)

Can you give your thoughts on FMM saying GBP should be called RSP? I figured Oscar would pipe down about his dislike of Floyd considering how much business Floyd's given his company.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Floyd does not like Oscar and the feeling is mutual. Floyd has his opinion. He likes doing business with Richard, who has treated him very well. And we all know that Richard is the person who runs the actual business. Oscar's name is on it, he has input when he wants and it is his company. But without Schaefer it does not exist as we know it. That is no knock on Oscar. It is simply fact.

Richie (Bronx NY)

wouldn't be great if Maidana changes his mind to fight morales...

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Of course it would, but I do not blame Maidana for not taking Erik on one week's notice even if Morales is willing. Maidana made a committment for a fight at home and it would not be right for him to dump that a week ahead of time to take Morales. If there is a rematch between them it deserves the proper promotion and for both guys to have the ability to train for each other.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Happy Friday Dan. It looks like Vanes-Perro and Lara-Kirkland won't be happening. Any chance of a Perro-Lara fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Anything is possible I suppose. Right now that Nov. 5 card is in flux. The only thing for certain is that Vanes is not fighting Angulo as he turned it down. And Dzinziruk is also not going to be on the card as was discussed.

Tomer (New York, NY)

I yearn for the days when there was only MMA tweeting going on in the Boxing twitter feed and not PBP of political debates...

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I have made that point but I do not contol the feed. I agree with you.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Greetings King Freak, word is the tix for May-Ortiz are moving slowly while Pac-JMM enjoy brisk sales...whats the true story?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I really don't know. Every fight there are always rumors one way or the other.

Geoff (Burlington, ON)

Is the Morales fight still going to be for a vacant belt?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

TBA but I would imagine the wretched WBC will probably sanction it assuming the opponent has two arms or, at least 1 1/2.

Joe (Vancouver)

I think the heavyweight division is becoming more interesting with up-and-comers like Seth Mitchell, Mike Perez, David Price, Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius, Denis Boytsov, Kubrat Pulev, Edmund Gerber, etc. Do you agree or disagree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I generally disagree because I don't think any of those guys at this point have what it takes to be a great heavyweight. Maybe there could be some good fights, so that would be good. Mitchell is a raw work in progress, same for Fury and Price. Helenius I like and has shown a lot in recent fights, but still has a lot of flaws. Boytsov is too small in my opinion to be an elite heavyweight and he has very bad hands that have kept him out on and off for quite awhile. Gerber I am not actually very familiar with. Pulev has looked pretty good but the jury is out based on the competition. Perez I am not all that high on.

Zim (Boston)

Now that Cotto-Cheato II is official, have they announced onsale date for tix? Any rumblings on undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Tix likely will go on sale later this month when they have the kickoff presser. The undercard is not set at all, just a lot of talk. But nothing is set. However, Mike Jones likely will be on it and Mike Lee as well, althought the Lee fight probably would be off TV.

Jesse (Los Angeles)

Who is this boxer Mayweather says Khan has to fight first before he get a shot at him? Is this boxer a challenge to Khan if they fought?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Jessie Vargas is a young fighter who is with Mayweather Promotions. He is a prospect who is fighting Josesito Lopez in the opening match of next week's PPV. He is very untested and for Floyd to say that he is trying to gain attention for his fighter, which is smart of him to do.

Mitch (Chicago)

I always hear Vanes calling people out and claiming no one is willing to fight him, so why turn down the fight with Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I don't know the details of the offer but on the surface going to Mexico to fight Angulo on his turf on his promoter's card seems a little dicey.

Joe (Western Mass)

Dan what fight do you think is the Fight of The Year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

There have been several good ones. Off the top of my head the strongest candidates right now are Hernan Marquez-Luis Concepcion (EPIC and if you didnt see it go on youtube), Ortiz-Berto, Wolak-Rodriguez and Maidana-Morales. I'm sure I missed some but those came to me right away.

Aaron (Hartford)

Makes me sick how the WBC is trying to push Rubios mandatory toward Martinez. Does everyone is Mexico try to protect JCC jr ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Yes.

Chris (Chatsworth)

Dan- I wanted to let you and the freaks know that I was having a cigar and a beer in So cal on Wedesday when across the room I saw Lamon Brewster sharing a cigar and a beer with a friend. I approached him as any freak would, and peppered him with questions. He spoke with me for an hour. He was humble, funny, highly interesting, and articulate. What a pleasure for a freak like me. Boxing needs more like him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Lamon Brewster is a cool guy. I covered some of his fights and he was always interesting to talk to. I am told he is now working as a trainer at a SoCal gym.

Jeff (Cincinnati)

If Bernard Hopkins loses to Chad Dawson does his multi fight deal with HBO go away?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Like in all of its deals, HBO has the right to terminate after a loss if it decides to.

Zim (Boston)

Let's get your picks for the weekend out of the way early. I like Vitali and McCloskey by dec and Gamboa by TKO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I like Vitali as well, always have. Just way too much size, power and chin for Adamek. I like Gamboa by a knockout, although Ponce has that puncher's chance. I also like McCloskey by stinky decision.

David (Atlanta)

hearing anything about Pascal-Cloud being close to finalized for December?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

That fight, if it happens, almost certainly won't happen this year. It would move into early next year if it does come off.

CM (Toronto)

Can someone tell Floyd to STOP saying the Pacquiao fight would have happened if Pacquiao wanted it? Please. His Kool-Aid tastes worse than Juan Manuel Marquez's.

Adam (LA)

What's the likelihood of Gamboa/Donaire next year? Or any year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

It's possible but a lot has to go right between now and then, which means these guys have to keep winning and Donaire has to make the successful move up two divisions.

Tom (Sacramento)

Any word on Burns vs Broner? Notebook coming?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Notebook should be up shortly. I have some stuff in there about Burns-Broner. Richard Schaefer made a deal with Frank Warren but he said the fight probably won't happen because Burns may vacate to move up because he is having problems making weight. If that happens, Broner would probably fight for a vacant belt.

Ron (Baltimore)

Aside from possibly Chris Arreola (against?), any other undercard news for the Super Six final? I got my tix!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Nothing yet.

Jeff (Cincinnati)

Is a James Toney - Denis Lebedev fight from Russia anything more than a rumor?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nope, it's real. I have stuff in the notebook about it. It is real but it is not done. They are working to finalize it but folks involved in the card say it's likely to be finalized.

Ty (Portland, OR)

What about Z. Judah vs E. Morales?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

On a week's notice? Are you from Mars?

Mitch (Chicago)

Was SUPER surprised to see Mike Lee in a Subway commercial during the game last night, I had to do a double take, figured Subway would be able to grab a bigger name from the boxing world.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I thought it was great. I had known about it the other day and was excited to hear it. They wanted a boxer with the right image, and Mike has that. That ad is going to be everywhere.

Bob Arum (TR)

Gamboa/Donaire just needs to season a little more...

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Marinate, marinate.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Good for Mike Lee on the Subway commercial, and good for boxing regardless of who's on it.

O'Neill Bell (The Comeback Trail)

Know any good hardware stores in North Bergen, NJ? I seem to have lost my hatchet...

bo (philly)

i hear vanes tured down 750,000 for the fight im also hearing because he wouldnt have fredie for a who camp is the major reason he tured it down

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

As for the Freddie situation, yes, that could be a major factor. As for the money, there is no way he was offered that much.

Ty (Portland, OR)

Any news on Tim Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Who?

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Don't know you if you heard about The Ring cleaning house and moving to Cali. Personally I'm bummed...

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I have heard and it is true and I am not surprised at all. It's too bad some good people were fired, including editor Nigel Collins, a good man, editor and writer.

karl (uk)

is mickey ward hof worthy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Micky made some very memorable fights down the stretch of his career with Gatti (and one with Augustus) and he has a captivating story (as told in "The Fighter") but his in-ring accomplishments are very limited. He is not even remotely close to being a Hall of Famer. He's a great guy and made some great fights, but that does not a HOFer make.

Berndawg (CHI)

Speaking of Mike Lee.....SUBWAY, EAT FRESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eddie (mpls)

call me a horrible person, but I DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE LONDON PARALYMPICS 2012. ESPN, get that crap off the boxing page!

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

LOL!!!

David (Atlanta)

regarding Bradley, how does sitting on the sidelines for what will probably be a full year or more make him a more attractive opponent for Pacquiao and Top Rank? He's not exactly building his brand.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

You're 10000000000000% right.

karl (uk)

i find it strange that burns has been calling for better opposition and now a fight with broner is on the horizon hes possibly moving up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

If he cant make weight, he cant make weight. Besides that, Broner is not a big name and frankly he would probably run Burns out of the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Check out this picture Freaks: http://twitpic.com/6ic6i3

Zim (Boston)

Weights are in from Poland. Vitali - 242.5 & Adamak - 216. Thought there'd be a larger discrepancy between the two.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

That is right about what I figured. Thought Vitali might be 2-3 pounds heavier, but no surprises.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

That is right about what I figured. Thought Vitali might be 2-3 pounds heavier, but no surprises.

Joe (PA)

Who is calliing the fights tomorrow for HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Lampley, Max and Manny. It's World Championship Boxing. They will call the Klitschko-Adamek fight from AC off a monitor and then do the live Gamboa-Ponce De Leon fight.

The Met (T.O.)

R.I.P. Ring Magazine. 1922-2011.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Based on the comments the Freaks are sending in that is the general consensus, that with the operation moving to LA and the longtime pre-GB people being let go that it will become a GB mag all the way and that the rankings and titles will become worthless. I sincerely hope that is not the case. We'll see what happens. That said, GB spent something like $7 million for the magazine and can do with it what it wants.

Jim (Santa Monica)

Gamboa's chin hasn't been tested lately, do you think Ponce de Leon can get there or will he simply be too slow to catch Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Ponce is slow and Gamboa is very, very fast. So landing the big shot could be an issue. But, Gamboa's defense is not always good and he leaves himself open sometimes. If Ponce can time one of those openings it could be lights out.

Joe (PA)

When will Larry Merchant be back on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

He'll be working the Mayweather-Ortiz fight next week.

Al M (NYC)

Is there Going To be a RAD Tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

No, I will be covering the fight in AC.

kevin (milwaukee)

Kendall Holt v Morales?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Holt is fighting Garcia on the Hopkins-Dawson PPV in October.

Derek (.) (.)

Will Wlad be fighting again this year? Doesn't seem to be anyone around for him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Yes, he is supposed to fight in November or December. No opponent yet.

Jason (Boulder, CO)

I can confirm MGM Grand is offering a hotel/boxing ticket package for Mayweather/Ortiz. I have seen no such offer for Pacquiao v JMM. It is fair to say Manny is a much bigger live draw (people), and Floyd has a the edge in PPV at this point.

Frank (PHX)

I found out hilarious when DLH was saying he was done when he fought Mayweather and how Hatton, Marquez, and Mosley were all weak opponents when he was the one promoting them the whole time. Lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Why would anyone be shocked at these statements? Maybe yesterday he was lying and today he is telling the truth?

Mike (NYC)

Did you know Dan Rafael backwards is Leafar Nad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

These are my readers.

Dan (NC)

242 seems low for Vitali. I thought he was usually around 260?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Not all. He is usually in the 240s.

Zim (Boston)

Think we'll see any more of Floyd Sr. on 24/7?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Depends on if he comes back into the camp.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Depends on if he comes back into the camp.

Mark (ATL)

Is the PBF/Ortiz fight the first boxing PPV to be priced $59.95 ($10 more for HD)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Yes it is. The suggested retail is $59.95. However, there is no SRP for HD. That is up to each cable or dish operator. Some charge more from HD and some do not. This is not a promoter thing. The promoters set the SRP and then the systems can charge what they want. $60 for a PPV or $70 in HD is getting a bit out of control if you ask me.

Kieran (Alexandria)

Re: the Twitter feed. That's why I don't have my account in there. I figure the freaks don't need to be exposed to my ravings on polar bears and global warming.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Exactly.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

Freak, Im a little shocked cotto-margo is getting the "mega fight" treatment by HBO. Not complaining, just a little shocked. Do you see it doing anywhere near 750,000 buys like bob is hoping?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Bob is Bob. He's a promoter. He's pumping up his fight. That is his job. That said, I do not see the fight doing that much business at all.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Did HBO make any efforts to put Cotto- Margo II on regular HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

No because it was not an option. It makes no business sense. The fight will geneate millions and millions more on PPV than HBO could ever even contemplate paying for it.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Danimal, hearing gym rumors that C/W Guillermo Jones will be on a DK card from Hollywood Hard Rock in Nov. any word from Alan Hopper on that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

It is possible, but there is nothing set yet.

Matt (SF)

The Pac/Mosley Tecate $25 rebate took 3 months to get to me, but I'm still doing the same for May/Ortiz.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Hey at least you got it. All those rebates take time.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

Freak, Is K-9 Bundridge on the verge of getting a fight? I was hoping to see him defend his title vs Wolak on the cotto-margo card.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Nothing in the works for him at this point as far as I know.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Good to see you back on ringside last night DTM! Do you know how often you will be on this season, or is it done more on a week to week basis?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Like last season, I will be a regular, but not every single week. This week was the second episode of the season and my first appearance. Lot of fun doing the show.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

24/7 for cotto-cheato 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Yes, although it probably will be fewer than the standard four episodes because of the time crunch between the Pacquiao fight and the Cotto fight.

Brady (Golden Valley, MN)

DTM, is The Ducker still set to retire at year's end like he's said for years?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Dont know. The Flopper has not spoken publicly about it as far as I know. I never believed he would retire at years' end anyway.

Chris (Seattle)

More Jan Zaveck please! I was very impressed by his performance, would like to see him stateside more

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I agree. In the right fight, he'd be good to see again.

Edwin (Houston)

Any word on if the Hopkins-Dawson fight will be broadcast in movie theatres? Four PPV's in four months at $70 a pop is getting ridiculous.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Not sure about the movies for BHop. However, they are not $70. Mayweather-Ortiz may be that price on some systems in HD but Pacman-Marquez is $54.95 as I understand it and the others are either that or less. Not $70. I think $70 is too much too but get your facts right please.

Scott (Los Angeles, CA)

Does it surprise you that Vitali is at his lowest weight in over 12 years?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

If that is true, not really. He knows Adamek is fast and being a little lighter may help Vitali with his own speed. As a heavyweight to come in 2-3 pounds less than usual is no big deal. Maybe he skipped breakfast today.

Frank (PHX)

What's the 4th undercard fight for BHop Dawson fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

The PPV bouts are BHop-Dawson, DeMarco-Linares, Holt-Garcia and Malignaggi-Lora.

Horn (Vegas)

How did you like the comparrisons between Berto and Meldrick Taylor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I did not agree with it at all.

Adam [via mobile]

In memory of 9/11 I am going to watch Hopkins Trinidad. Amazing that Hopkins is still fighting 10 years later.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Not only fighting but at the top of the sport. I spoke to BHop yesterday about his memories of 9/11 and being in NY and it will be in an upcoming blog.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

I love that DeMarco-Linares fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Very solid fight.

Choco (New Jersey)

What do you think of the PR's Luis Cruz as a prospect - can he be a force in a weak division at 130?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I haven't really seen much of him but I look forward to seeing him fight tomorrow night on the Gamboa-Ponce undercard.

Jerry (DC)

Will big time boxing come back to DC ever again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I hope so. Last home game I had was Tyson-McBride. DC used to have a ton of top fighters but it has not been so good lately. The city would love a big fight to get behind. I think it would be a great place for Khan-Peterson in December if it comes off. Peterson is from DC and Khan was here this week for a dinner with Hillary Clinton and was recognized a lot of places where he went and there is a big Musclim community here that might support the fight. Would be great.

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

Did you see the WBA's lame excuse for ranking Rahman No1?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Yes. It's like talking to a rock.

R_Gomez12 (Bay Area)

HBO replaying Hopkins vs Trinidad would be a great 9/11 treat

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Agreed but HBO does not have the rights to do it.

Wilkie (Toronto)

What time is it, Mr. Pryor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

HAWK TIME!

David (Houston)

Does star power seem like kind of a depressing promotion to you? Sad family situations, both fighters at one point blaming the media for things, etc. Just seems off to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Nothing unusual. That's the way it usually goes. The media gets blamed for everything.

Kevin (Fall River)

How come no coverage of the Gatti developments?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

We had plenty of coverage of it, I just was not the one who wrote it.

Aaron (MI)

Why do you go so easy on Amir Khan for avoiding a Prescott rematch? That fight would make him more money in the UK than any non Mayweather or Pac fight. He says all these fighters are afraid of him but he leaves millions on the table to avoid Prescott.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

If you think that is the case you obviously have not read my columns.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

If you think that is the case you obviously have not read my columns.

Rob (Williston Park, NY)

what was WBA's "reasoning" for the Rahman ranking?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

A lot of BS, that's what. Stuff like he is the former champion, he has been active (against stiffs) and other such nonsense not based in the reality of actually ranking a fighter on his merit and accomplishment in recent times. The fact is that Hasim Rahman has never won a truly notable fight since he knocked out Lennox Lewis in 2001. He got a belt by dubious means by beating Monte Barrett for an interim belt and then was given the title when Vitali retired. I like Rock. A lot. My point has been that he is simply not close to being a leigitimate No. 1 contender.

Jose (Lennox, CA)

Nothing against Mike Lee, but "boxer with the right image"? I don't think it's hard to read between the lines. C'mon Subway, its 2011

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Nothing to read between the lines. He's clean cut, educated at a top university, charitible, speaks well in complete sentences and has a massive work ethic. A company could do a lot worse than to be associated with a person like that.

Scott (Eagan, MN)

Any thoughts on Golden Boy gutting the integrity of the Ring Mag by firing Nigel Collins and all east coast staff.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

I dont think the act of firing anyone guts their integrity. What would do that depends on what happens with the product going forward.

Steve (NYC)

Was the WBA that impressed with a KO of Galen Brown?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Apparently.

Gary (Ft. Wayne)

you don't have to agree with Dan's opinions to post here, but at least read his stuff to have some vague idea of what you're talking about when you post.

Joe (Chicago, IL)

After Floyd's victory over Ortiz, does he have any chance of leaping Manny in the rankings or will he have to defeat Pacquiao to do so?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Regardless of if Floyd beats Ortiz I would not make a change at the top of p4p until at least the Pacquiao-Marquez fight. However, if Floyd wins, he would certainly go back into the rankings since he is now active again after being dropped only because he had not fought for more than a year.

Joe (NY)

I am amazed by how many people are viewing the Mayweather - Ortiz fight as a gimme for Floyd. This is a dangerous fight, folks...and for a lot of reasons. Don't be shocked...

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

The folks I talk to all view it as Mayweather's toughest test in awhile.

OG ((Los Angeles))

What do you think of Mayweather Jr saying that people would suspect him of using PEDs if he started knocking out heavyweights. Yet, a few years ago he was the one who broke the Big Show's nose?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Buddaheath (Inkster,MI)

Is Berto vs Bailey actually going to happen next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

The IBF told me that fight is due next. So unless Bailey gets a big fight somewhere else or Berto vacates that is likely to be the next fight.

Gilberto Mendoza (WBA)

Key members of our ratings committee involved in making Hasim Rahman the number 1 HW contender include my "super" wife, my "regular" girlfriend, and my "interim" mistress.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

LOL!

David (Houston)

Is there a particular reason why the last EPIX feed was about four rounds or so behind what was happening live?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

From what I was told the Germans began ahead of the schedule they were supposed to go with, which left Epix to show the fights on a very slight delay of about 15 minutes. It was out of their hands.

Harry (Saratoga)

No way HBO pays for Berto-Bailey

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Remember one thing: HBO paid almost $1 million for Berto-Freddy Hernandez. Besides, I am a bit interested in Berto-Bailey.

Joe (Chicago, IL)

Will Ponce de Leon be able to carry the extra weight into Saturday's fight? Or will the extra weight slow him down to where he's an easy target for Gamboa

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

What extra weight? He has fought at feather for a few years except for one fight at 130 against Broner, which a lot of people think he won. The weight is not an issue for Ponce.

daniel (lorenzo)

How bout Mike Jones vs. Jan Zaveck

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Perfect. That's the kind of "right fight" on HBO for Zacveck I was talking about.

Austin (Houston, tx)

$59.95 for a PPV fight (standard definition) whose idea was this?? Is FMM trying to slowly price out his audience?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

The promoter makes the final call, so in this case that would be Golden Boy and Mayweather.

Shameel (Toronto)

Dan, havnt heard anything about Daniel Jacobs for a while - any news?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Danny is recovering from back surgery to remove a growth.

Joe (Chicago, IL)

I read your article on the match that made you want to cover boxing for a living...but what's the best boxing match you've ever witnessed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I've answered this a million times: being ringside for Corrales-Castillo I.

Joel Julio (Columbia)

Hi dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Aaron (Hartford)

30 K people for the Paq- Marquez presser is insane....

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

They had triple that at the presser in Manila.

Justin (Kentucky)

Dead or Alive, name one fighter that you havent interviewed but would love to.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Would love to have interviewed Jack Johnson.

Kieran (Alexandria)

Not only do I also feel (strongly) that Corrales-Castillo I was the best fight I've ever covered from ringside, I will also remember it strongly for having the singular honor of being seated next to Budd Schulberg. Unforgettable honor for me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Legendary fight, legendary writer.

JoJo (Thousand Oaks, CA)

Dano, Im skipping my 10 yr high school reunion next week so I can watch PBF-Ortiz. Freak Status?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Not really. I went to my 10-year high school reunion and it was kinda lame. You made the right pick.

John (Chicago)

Dan, in light of the 9/11 anniversary, can you give us your brief memories of the environment for Hopkins-Trinidad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Very hard to describe. I remember more about being in the city during the week I was there than the actual fight. One memory I will never shake was arriving via train and walking thru Penn Station (and this is two weeks after 9/11, when the fight was rescheduled) and seeing the walls in the station papered with missing persons signs or people looking for their family and friends, who had obviously been killed in the attacks. I remember the dust cloud over the city, the relative quiet of the city. Midtown is never quiet, but it was very quiet and peaceful actually. I recall that everyone was polite, a big change from a typical NYC day. It was all so odd. And I remember the smell. Everywhere you went you could smell the burning of the towers. On the night of the fight, there was a somber mood in the arena and it was like people were excited for the fight but not sure if they should cheer or clap. I looked around during the anthems and there were people weeping openly everywhere. Just a lot of things I wont forget about that week of being there.

Justin (Seattle)

At ringside for Corrales-Castillo I, yes you were working and being professional. I am curious as to whether or not the other writers ringside just had a look on their faces that they were seeing something very special.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

One thing that I had never seen before and have never seen since: When the fight was over many of the writers stood up to applaud, not for Corrales as the winner but just in appreciation of the fight.

Rags (NYC)

Under the radar, but how about former middleweight contender Epifanio Mendoza upsetting heavyweight prospect, Carlos Negron?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Not totally shocked at all. I've seen Negron several times from early in his career and never thought much of him. Good size, but horrible footwork, bad defense and uncoordinated. It was bound to happen and Mendoza, even though he is way up in weight, could always bang.

Candy (Los Angeles)

Dan, how did you score the B-Hop - Calzaghe fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I had it for BHop by a point or two. Several writers did.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I want to offer my condolences to Bob Arum, whose sister passed away.

Steve (NYC)

The Subway ad brings up a good point. Who is the most marketable American boxer right now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Besides Mike Lee, who is in the ad, I think a guy like Andre Ward is very marketable. Clean cut image, family guy, champion, Olympic gold medalist, super nice guy, very well spoken, smart, just the total package. I think BHop, with his personality and the accomplishments as an older guy and his story of going from prison to solid citizen should be attractive to some companies. Victor Ortiz, especially if he beats Mayweather, also could be attractive to corporate America.

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

Will Starpower be showing in theaters? Refuse to pay $60-$70 considering i just shelled out a small fortune to my Sat' provider for the NFL's season long pass. Theaters at $20...that's the only way I can watch the fight. Tell me that option is available Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

The fight will be in almost 400 theaters.

Carlos (Gilroy)

Would a Ponce De Leon victory be considered a major upset? What impact would a loss have to Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Definitely an upset but not a HUGE upset.

Chris (Seattle)

Mayweather should do ads for Bail Bonds companies in Las Vegas. I know I'd trust his judgement on that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Jorge (San Diego)

Who do you favor in the Salgado- Mendez clash? That sounds like a good one.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Solid match. They fight this weekend for a vacant 130 belt. I think Mendez should win but getting a decision in Mexico could be tough.

Horn (Vegas)

Does it upset you when your spending time with your family on a "off day" and breaking news hit, and you have to put it on the wire?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Goes with the territory. I remember having to write a breaking news story during my cousin's wedding rehersal dinner. Stuff happens.

Joe (NJ)

Wouldn't BHops past racial tirades keep any marketability at an extreme low.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Bernard has made some stupid racial remarks but I would not consider them "tirades."

Jorge (San Diego)

Mike Lee in a Subway commercial and Amir Khan going to the White House? Pretty good exposure for boxing if you ask me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Good point.

Joe (Western Mass)

Could you see a Berto/Khan fight in '12

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Maybe. I would love that fight.

Richie (Bronx NY)

any word on thomas dulorme from puerto rico?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Yes, he is scheduled to fight Oct. 1 on the Sergio Martinez-Darren Barker undercard in AC.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Any news on Brandon Rios next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Probably Dec. 10 on Showtime vs. TBA. They're looking at John Molina, Rocky Martinez and a very outside shot of Kevin Mitchell. (I dont think the money is there to make Mitchell.)

Carlos (Gilroy)

With a good win and ESPN3 coverage, maybe Prescott can get Khan to remember him in December?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Maybe. But I think you're looking more likely at the mandatory with Lamont Peterson.

Carlos (Gilroy)

By the way, big props 2 ESPN for the McCloskey-Prescott fight. an unexpected surprise for the freaks

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Agreed. I just wish these things would be set far more in advance so they could actually get the word out better.

eddie (mpls)

i'm a molina fan, but i think rios buries him. too strong.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Maybe so but you know it would be a fun fight.

pepe (buenos aires)

Do you think martinez-chavez jr. will be done?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I'd be surprised if Top Rank ever matched Chavez with Sergio Martinez.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Obvious marketing campaign: "This is Bernard Hopkins, and I want to talk to you about Costco...."

jy (la)

whats up next for giovanni segura?? grat fighter

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Fights next week at flyweight in Mexico, opponent still TBA.

Steve (Kansas)

If Victor pulls off the upset what do you see in store for him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

He would be in the mix for any huge fight. Maybe a rematch with Floyd. Maybe Pacquiao. Certainly a Berto rematch is always there. He won't have to worry about big fights or big paydays.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Marketing Campaigns: This is David Haye, and I want to talk to you about steel toe enforced work shoes....

Joe (NJ)

Foreman at the age of 46 had the ForemanGrill in 95' after he won the title again. Bhop should make a BHopPanini Press

Carlos (Gilroy)

Is Maidana being ducked by the triumverate of Pac, FMM, and Khan? He has either beaten or made good fights against their other opponents

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

What are you talking about? First off, Khan already beat him less than a year ago straight up with no controversy so you make no sense. Second, Manny and Floyd are in a different division at this point doing big business with others.

Duff (Boston, MA)

For anyone who needs the list of theaters showing Mayweather-Ortiz:http://www.fathomevents.com/sports/event/mayweather_ortiz.aspx

JP (Columbus, OH)

Has Victoria's Secret ever approached Oscar about pitching their lingerie? Just askin'...

Mariusz (Poland)

Hey guy, when Adamek beats Klitschko, you gonna apologize to all the Polish boxing fans for your sins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

What is my sin? For having an opinon that Klitschko will beat him? Whatever.

Micah (PHX )

DTM- I've been gone for a couple weeks but I'm back in the Mothaship chat! What do you think of the comparison by Floyd on media day..saying that Manny's rise in weight from 105-154 would be like him going up to heavy weight and knocking out people?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

More of the same nonsense.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Dan, you pointed out the Stat of the Year in your Vitali article: Vitali has never even TRAILED in any fight in his career. His only 2 blemishes were injury stoppages where he was ahead on all cards. Crazy stat!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It is pretty amazing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It is pretty amazing.

ralph (long island)

wbc new #1 contender----Henry Akinwande

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Do not give the putrid WBC any ideas.

Tincho (Los Angeles)

Will you be in LA for Hopkins Dawson? I remember seeing you on the elevator by Lucky Strikes last September but being too shy to approach you.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Yes, I plan to be. No stalking though.

ralph (long island)

yesssssss!!!! i finally made it into the chat--- weeks and weeks of trying--- david haye, take note---lol thanks dan

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

I am making you this week's interim super chat champ, for a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Jerry (Gary, IN)

If Ward wins against Froch...any chance he fights Kessler again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Doubtful. For what purpose? He completely dominated him. Ward will have bigger fish to fry.

Jose Sulaiman Jr. (Juarez)

we approve the JCC Jr defense vs. Terry Norris

Mickey (Chicago)

I've noticed there a lot of Freaks from Chicago on here, probably all wondering if we're ever gonna get a big fight here again/ Is there some reason promoters stay away from here?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

There are regular smaller shows in Chicago but there arent any big ones these days because who is the draw?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Notebook is up.

fran (plaza)

Do you see anuglo dominating jr. midd division?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Not particularly.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

I happen to notice that 9 of your 2009 prospects r now contenders

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Well I guess I did a pretty good job.

angel (iowa park tx)

dan anything on tyson marquez

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Supposed to have a rematch with Concepcion next month or November.

Mickey (Chicago)

Any chance of ESPN3 showing the Gonzalez-Mtagwa fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Yes, it will be on ESPN3 as well as on ESPN Deportes on Sept. 15.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

OK, Freaks thank for chatting today. Hope you check out the notebook and the rest of the stories and blogs from the week. Follow me on Twitter for updates during tomorrow's fights as I will be in AC for Gamboa-Ponce and also will be watching Klitschko-Adamek. Talk you next week from Las Vegas, where I will be covering Mayweather-Ortiz. Have a great weekend. Peace.
