Chat with Bryan Broaddus

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:08 PM)

Sorry about that guys...running a little behind.

Eric (Bay Area, California)

What did you take from last nights game?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:09 PM)

I was surprised how well the defense played. That was a struggle on the back end with all the injuries. It was a nice job by the coaches holding that together.

Dwight (Cleveland, OH)

I am finding it hard to defend Romo any more and the way he has cost us so many games - your thoughts ?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:11 PM)

I was here when we had bad QB play so Romo has been a blessing but there is no reason for the mistakes that he made in that game last night. A veteran QB has to be smarter with the football.

kio (dallas)

what did u think of the play of the offensive line ?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:13 PM)

I am going into the lab after this chat to break down the game further. From my naked eye, thought the line did a nice job. Pass Pro got better as the game wore on but the run blocking will need to be studied more.

Randy (NYC)

Why in the world would Garrett not challenge Romo's "fumble"?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:14 PM)

I thought there was a shot that the ball was down, I agree but the more I watched it, the more I thought the ball was moving before the knee hit the ground.

Tim (DC)

Does Romo's habit of playing chicken with the play clock hurt our running game? The running game improved under Kitna last year, but I attributed it to JG influence. Now, not so sure...

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:16 PM)

Garrett has talked about getting the play in faster to Romo. With the way the Jets were lining up on defense, he had to give his OL a shot to make their calls off his adjustments.

Cody Gambill (Allen)

What was with the play calling at the goal line with a 7 point lead? How do you only run the ball once?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:18 PM)

I agree here. I understood the pass on first down but then after that I had a problem with what Garrett was doing. Red Zone calls have seem to give him the most trouble as a play caller.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the Hardest team that the Dallas Cowboys will face this season?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:18 PM)

That trip to New England will not be easy.

Kim (San Angelo)

Skip Bayless is telling everyone on First Take that it was Jason Witten's fault for not lowering his shoulder and getting in the endzone on his long pass, negating the series where Romo fumbled. Do you agree?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:19 PM)

I dont agree with Skip. Jim Leonard is a good safety for the Jets. He used the sideline well and he is strong in the upper body. He did a nice job of playing with leverage there.

Meredith (ATL)

I read that the locker room talk was that Dez failed to come back for the pass, which led to Reeve's interception, but Romo took the fall. Do you know?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:21 PM)

I am going to the lab and take a look at it. I also have plenty of guys to ask on the coaching staff and front office.

paul (oklahoma city)

what will it take for us to get a new GM and for jerry to step down?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:22 PM)

Jerry will never leave this job, the hope for Cowboys fans is that one day his son Stephen takes over. He has a much better feel for personnel than his Dad in my view of working with him.

Dale (Shreveport, LA)

How many times are we going to have to hear "It's my fault we lost the game". This seems to be the theme of the Tony Romo era with the Cowboys. This might be the reason that he played QB for Northern Illinois and not recruited by a big time College. There are some great moments, but there are just too many mistakes when it matters most. What's your take Bryan.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:24 PM)

I dont think where he played college ball has one thing to do with the mistakes. He is trying to make plays, sometimes he is successful but there are times he will fail. I thought the block punt was worse than the fumble last night in the game.

Robbie (Lawton, OK)

Do you have any updates suffered by our players in yesterday's game?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:25 PM)

We will meet with Garrett this afternoon at 530pm and we will hear about the injuries then.

Dez Bryant (Dallas)

What happened to me last night? I started off on fire then I was just awful.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:28 PM)

I was not surprised about the way Dez started last night but I knew that would be a tough game for him. He plays with some much passion and energy but when you line up against Revis you are in for a fight all day. It was a great game to learn from. Sometimes your best isnt good enough but you have to fight through it.

Aggie (TX)

LSU better than Bama? I thought the defense showed a lot of heart last night and Sean Lee looks like a total stud!

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:29 PM)

I thought Sean was outstanding last nite but its one game, he needs to build on that each week and not be an up and down player. Would not be surprised to see Lee and Brooking as starters here during the season.

Pete (Montville, NJ)

Bryan- as always love your stuff. Anyway, after a demoralizing loss last night how do you think we respond next week ? I'm confindent Garrett will turn this into a positive.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:31 PM)

Thanks for the kind words Pete. 49ers are coming off a nice win for Harbaugh so its another tough trip. Garrett had the team ready last night to play the game, but mistakes did them in. Garrett will coach off that.

Jon (NYC)

Bryan, I was at the game and haven't been able to see a replay - how did Romo fumble at the 3? Was it knocked out or did he just lose the ball?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:32 PM)

I am going to study the tape here in a few but I believe that DT Devito knocked it out of his hands.

Kim (San Angelo)

Do you have any updates on the injuries to all the corners? Is Newman going to be ready for SF, is Jenkins out? How long will Scandrick be out? Will the Cowboys be looking to add a veteran corner?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:33 PM)

Newman was making progress from what I saw last week at Valley Ranch. Scandrick is the worry now and Jenkins is going to be banged up all season.

Steve (Syracuse)

Why is Lito Sheppard sitting out there? Is he hurt? He's only 30 And why wouldn't he be a much more proven option instead of calling up Mario Butler? The man used to kill the Boys with all those INT's! Thoughts?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:35 PM)

I have always liked Bryan McCann so when he plays I am okay with that. I know that the front office wants to try these young guys first and go from there. Dont sleep on Butler, I like his game but they dont feel he is ready now.

Barry (Durham)

How many games will the Cowboys win this season? wild card spot?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:36 PM)

I had the Cowboys at 9 - 7 with no playoff spot but I am usually wrong.

Bryan (Frisco)

Do you think theirs a chance Bruce Carter will be able to come in and help out the cowboys in the nickel when back i heard he has coverage skills of a strong safety

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:38 PM)

Bruce Carter is a nice player. He is a 3 down guy like Lee. He would have helped and watching him work out he moves very well. It would have been great to see him play this camp because he does have some skill.

Mike (At Work)

What do you see as the biggest opprotunity for improvement/concern coming out of the 1st game?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:40 PM)

If the Special Teams does not get better, its going to be a long year. They have to do a better job not only in protection but the way they return. Harris has a chance to help in the return game. I have seen him to well.

Ricky Bobby (Larryville)

Line these cornerbacks up in order by who played the best last night. McCann. Jenkins. Ball

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:41 PM)

Getting ready to watch the defense so check back with ESPN Dallas.com and my Scout's Eye on Tuesday. I will address that area.

Bryan M (Denton)

How did Brent and Spencer look last night?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:43 PM)

I never noticed Brent, I did notice Hatcher and there were times when Spencer flashed but it was against air. Going into the game I knew that Hunter would struggle for the Jets. Ryan saw the same thing from pre season.

Craig, Lindsay, ON [via mobile]

OL looked better as the game progressed. And young DB's fought and battled. Reason for optimism. However, Romo needs to get the play snapped sooner and we need a better running game. And I thought Lee would supplant Brooking. Is it James on his way out?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:45 PM)

I think that you hit the nail on the head with your views. Would not be surprised to see Brooking and Lee be more of a combination going forward.

Darren Boyd (Keller,Tx)

Do my Dolphins have a chance tonight??

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:46 PM)

I hate to say this my friend but I think that the Pats roll tonight.

John (New Jersey)

Bryan - think Cowboys have any regrets about waiving Josh Thomas? I know he was a raw 5th rounder but sometimes those guys work out.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:47 PM)

I really liked the Buffalo Univ film that I watched of Josh Thomas but he was out played by Butler but it would have been nice to get them both on the practice sqaud. Nice get by the Panthers.

PA (Chicago)

Romo played for Eastern Illinois, not NIU. Don't disrespect my Huskies like that. Anyways, what do you think happened on the blocked punt last night? Why does Dallas not have a safety guy back there in front of the kicker, like most teams seem to?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:50 PM)

I was on the staff that brought Romo here so I knew where he went to school...I will get to the bottom of it on the blocked punt. At first I thought it was Holley but another person told me to watch Albright.

Mike (At Work)

Please explain how keeping 2 kickers helped us last night..tell us again how many touchbacks Beuller had last night

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:52 PM)

I understand what you are saying about the two kickers. If you dont get the touchbacks then its a fail roster spot. I think they are keeping Buehler on the roster to try long kicks if needed.

wes (huntington, wv)

Do you think that the continued late blunders will force Garrett to more conservative in the play calling down the stretch? At this point losing like this begins to effect the entire team mojo

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:54 PM)

I dont see Garrett changing the way he calls plays. The only real problem I had with him was the series that Romo put the ball on the ground.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:55 PM)

Guys, thanks for all the questions...have to run and break this game down. Will be here each Monday at 11am so have a wonderful day and see you next week. Make sure you are following all our guys on ESPN Dallas.com
