Pat How important is this game for Atlanta coming up vs PHI? I know its very very early but I think its a big game?
It's a huge game for Falcons. Can't afford to start 0-2. If you do that, the snow-ball effect starts rolling and season can get out of hand in a hurry.
Hey Pat, I'm a Panthers fan & the obvious news of Beason being out is obviously heartbreaking to us
Yep, that's a big loss for the defense and the entire team. Not only is Beason a great player, but he's also probably the best leader in that locker room.
so...even as a Falcon fan, I am very surprised about most analysts picking us to beat the PHI Vickles Sunday. What makes anyone think this team can beat the "dream team", especially when they have Vick at QB. We have a notorious crappy track record against the Eagles to begin with, and with the crushing blow last week to the Bears, I can hardly fathom why anyone would pick this team, in this game. Can you give me some hope/reasoning that maybe I'm not seeing?
Probably the biggest factor in that is that the game's in the Georgia Dome. The Falcons have been pretty good there in recent years.
The Falcons aquired a starting quality DB in Kelvin Hayden, why didn't they put him in the nickel?
Think you may see more of him and James Sanders this week. They needed a little time to catch up on the scheme, but I think Falcons might get them more involved this week.
Did Cam put all questions to rest about a QB competition? Can we finally release Clausen?
No real need to release Clausen right now. Keep him as the third QB this season because you never know what might happen with injuries. But, after this season, he's gone.
Panthers -31Packers -28That's right. The Panthers will defeat Green Bay this weekend by controlling the time of possession and limiting Rodgers' big plays.
Have you been hanging out with Thomas Davis?
falcon fan here: when will sanders and hayden step in. our secondary needs help!
Like I said, I think that's coming this week.
Pat what will it mean to the Panthers if they pull off an upset over Green Bay? How big of a statement would that make throughout the league?
That would be huge. But it's a long shot. After seeing Green Bay last week, I can honestly say Packers are even better than I thought they were.
Pete I have to say even though the Panthers are 0-1 the atmosphere in Charlotte feels much difference then it was last year when the panthers also start the off by going 0-1
Well, that's what happens when you have a real QB.
is conner better than beason on blitzes,I know he is not better on coverage.
No, I wouldn't say that. Connor's strength is playing the run. On blitzes and in coverage, he's nothing special.
Do you think Mike Mularkey is being unfairly criticized for not opening up the Atlanta Falcon offense?
No, I'd say the criticism is fair. There's a ton of talent on that offense. They've got to use it.
Coach Smith is getting Hayden and Sanders more reps in practice, it seems reasonable to believe that Hayden will take over for the nickel back position when ready, but do you see us making a move at FS and benching DeCoud for Sanders? His play has continually dipped since his rookie season, and he missed 2 potentially game changing interceptions. Those in Coach Smith's eyes are "Explosive" plays that can't be missed.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sanders takes DeCoud's place.
I'm convinced the person at most to blame for the Bucs' loss to the Lions last week is Greg Olson. Agree or disagree?
I'd have to agree with you there.
After seeing the schedule for week 2, it is not crazy to think that all NFC south teams will start the year 0-2. Has that ever happened before?
Don't think so. But I'll check with our Stats & Info people.
You think saying Gamble was done was a tad premature? He had a very good game against a great receiver in Larry Fitgearld.
Pat, Do you remember covering the news on T. Davis wasn't actually a free-agent because he was out the entire season last year? Does that occur with Beason now given he's in the same position??
Pat, are the Saints as bad on defense as they looked against Green Bay?
Seem to be having a little technical problem. I'm going to sign out and sign back in and see if that fixes it. Be back in just a minute.
pat,you were right about cam all the way
All right, think we got that cleared up. On Cam, I never said he was a sure thing. All I did was tell you that Panthers were going to draft him and give you the reasoning why they did. But, yeah, he did get off to a heck of a start.
Can we put Steve Smith back in the top 10 recievers in the NFL?
Yeah, now that he's got a real QB.
You think saying Gamble was done was a tad premature? He had a very good game against a great receiver in Larry Fitgearld.
Maybe, but let's see him play like that every week.
Do you think the saints will ever take fixing the defense seriously because playing teams like chicago and greenbay they will lose. Also there offensive line is bad.
They better fix it and fix it quickly. They don't have to be dominant. They just have to make a play from time to time and produce some turnovers.
Wanted to know your thought s on the Bushrod vs Peppers matchup / mismatch for the Saints game. This seems to be a very big mismatch that is being overlooked.
No doubt it's a mismatch. But Saints do a good job of giving Bushrod help. I don't think Falcons gave Baker enough help in his matchup with Peppers last week.
Ryan had over 40 pass attempts in the game against the Bears and Turner only ran the ball 10 times. When ever the Falcon's Offense is this inbalanced they always lose. Do you think they will go back to a more run first offense instead of trying to show off the new aquisitions?
Yeah, I think they'll run more this week. But they didn't exactly do a great job of showcasing the new acquisitions last week.
Hey Pat, I read an article where Brian Van Gorder said it has been hard to practice tackling with the new practice rules. He cannot be serious! Excuses like this when the rest of the league abides by the same rules is unbelievable. Tell me he's gone soon. I dont care if hes Coach Smith's guy
I don't think that's an acceptable excuse. NFL players should be able to tackle no matter how much or little practice they're getting. It's a pretty basic thing and they've all been doing it since Pop Warner days.
When Steve Smith didn't have a real QB all those years, he didn't really have great games. Do you think that left more tread on the tires for him to compete longer than the average WR?
I think Steve can go a few more years. Two reasons for that. 1. He's always kept himself in very good shape. 2. He's one of the most intense competitors I've ever seen and I think he has the drive to go a few more years.
the bucs had the lowest ticket sales of any team last week, a home opeener cant sell out, i wish the glazers would sell the bucs to someone who cares and focus on alienation the manchester united fans
All right, I'm curious, why are you and so many fans so down on the Glazers? I don't understand that thinking. They're not bad owners. They won you a Super Bowl and got you a great stadium. Not saying they're the best owners in the league, but they're WAY better than what Bucs had in the old days.
What game will you be concentrating on this weekend?
Well, I'll be at the Falcons/Eagles game. But I'll be keeping an eye on the other three games.
What IS the deal with the Bucs fans? It can't just be the Glazers. Wasn't that stadium rockin' back in the Warren Sapp/Derrick Brooks era?
Yep, it was rocking for more than a decade.
i just think the glazers could spend maybe 10 mill more and get 2-3 players and really be a winning playoff team. theey are so close to breaking through to being great, just sign one decent free agent and make it happen
Oh, so signing a free agent or two will put them over the top? How's that worked out for the Redskins? Or the Cowboys?
I keep hearing that Vick is likely to get a warm reception in ATL but I just can't figure out why. Not only were his actions disgusting, it really could have crippled the franchise for a while.
As I wrote yesterday, it really didn't cripple the franchise. Falcons bounced back quickly. As far as Vick, he was extremely popular when he was with the Falcons and a lot of fans still like him.
Pat, who is going to have a longer season, the Saints Defense or the Falcons Offense?
Tough call. I'll go with Saints' defense. I think Atlanta's offense can bounce back. Not sure Saints have the defensive talent to be really good.
Are the Panthers gonna be a more pass oriented team like they showed against Arizona, or are they gonna go back to running the ball more?
I think you'll see a lot more of the running game going forward. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are too good not to use.
Do the Saints really miss Sharper?
No, not at all. They're fine at free safety with Malcolm Jenkins. Strong safety has been one of their problems.
In 2003, the Bucs were so hard against the salary cap they had to let Sapp and Lynch go. Freeman, Williams, Benn & McCoy's contracts all run out in 2014. That's going to require a lot of cap space. Why do so many Bucs fans hate the Glazers for refusing to put Mark Dominik in the situation where he might not be able to resign one of those players?
You're preaching to the choir there. I can see very clearly that Tampa Bay's plan is to build through the draft and keep their core players. Not sure why so many fans don't understand that. It's not all that different from what they did in the Dungy/McKay days.
Babineaux is a stud, how big of trouble are the falcons in for the next few weeks?
It hurts a lot. Babs is best DT in the NFC South. But maybe this is the time for a healthy Peria Jerry to step up.
With Colston out, I think the NFCS will be introduced to a new big time receiver on the Saints. Adrian Arrington has the same skill set as Colston and will be needed against the Bears cover 2.
You might be right. He's the one WR on that team whose skill set is similar to Colston's.
In regards to the Tarnard Jackson scenario, is the reinstatement process a long-term deal or could he possibly see the field against the Falcons in the week 3 matchup?
First off, there's no guarantee he'll be reinstated immediately. Second, if he does come back, they'd probably bring him along somewhat slowly and let him practice for a few weeks to get back into football shape.
What do you think are the keys for the Falcons to beat the Eagles on Sunday night. What do you think are the keys for the Falcons to beat the Eagles on Sunday night.
Pretty simple. They've got to get back to playing smart, efficient football. Limit the turnovers and the big mistakes.
Any update on when Colston will return? I took a flier on him in my fantasy draft.
Supposed to be four games.
How will Cam hold up against Green Bay?
Green Bay's a little better than Arizona, so I think this one might be more challenging.
Jimmy practice is almost over, my Cactus Coolers betta be cool!
Starting to lose faith in matty ice, is this a fair assumption
No, he has had two bad games in a row. But he's had three pretty good years.
Really, I've submitted 5 pretty good questions about the Panthers and what we choose is a joke about Jimmy Clausen as read by Steve Smith?
Please submit them again. I don't get to see all the questions. They come in very rapidly and I just grab what I see.
As far as Colston goes--isn't four weeks kind of a short period of time to recover from a broken collarbone?
You're the doctor, so you tell me. But Saints have said it should be right about four weeks.
You mention Clausen being gone at year-end. Via trade? Do they (and other teams) still believe he can be a productive starter in the right situation?
His trade value's not real high right now. Doubt many teams view him as a starter. Probably just a backup.
colston won't come back till after the bye. typical payton fudging the injury report. should the saints pick up t.o.?
No, they've got enough other WRs.
will john kasay be able to stick it out in new orleans? he made all of his field goals so far.
Yeah, but he's probably gone as soon as Hartley is healthy.
do you think i can play in 3rd down situations?
Doesn't matter what I think. Your coach doesn't think you can and he's got final say on that.
Say bye to sam baker after this year, waste of a first round pick
No argument here.
a real bucs fan here. do you think there is anything wrong with Josh Freeman?
No, Josh is fine. Play calling and supporting cast are questions, but Josh is fine.
Do you think Marty Hurney's future rides on Cam's development despite some big draft busts in the past (Colbert, Shelton, E. Brown, Jarrett, etc.)?
To a large degree, yes. But Hurney and Jerry Richardson are very close and are on the same page.
Pat, I'm terrified of an undrafted rookie being the replacement for Otah..
You probably should be.
Who gets the next statue outside of BOA between Kasay and SSmith?
Depends who retires first. Probably Kasay.
Share the truth Pat, don't be part of the Glazer coverup.
How do you all like Chris Weinke now!!??
Always liked Chris. Thought he had an NFL arm, but things didn't work out for him for a variety of reasons.
Pat, Questions on Freeman's supporting cast? I thought they were covered on most of the skilled positions. Please elaborate
Well, he's got a RB who can't play in the two-minute offense, an O-line that has some questions and, other than Williams, the receivers are still trying to establish themselves.
Hey Pat when are you coming down for a Panthers game?
Sure I will be coming UP at some point -- I live in Tampa. We don't plan our travel too far ahead. All I know at this point is I've got Eagles/Falcons on Sunday night and Bucs and Falcons next week. But I am anxious to see Cam in person.
Pat, Can you answer my question on if Beason's contract will roll over into next season like t. Davis's did?? when we all found out he wasn't a free-agent??
No, that was different. Beason's on IR, so his contract doesn't roll over. Davis was on PUP and there was a loophole about that.
What did you think about Ryan saying he doesn't want to force the deep ball? You have Julio on one side and Roddy on the other. One of them has to be one on one, and that means touchdown!
Think he was saying he didn't force it against Bears because it wasn't there. But I also think he realizes he needs to throw the deep ball going forward.
My plan is working to perfection. It pays to be a big-dog owner. Our Panthers will have a dynasty before this decade is over. Right Pat?
Very possible. You've got a franchise QB for perhaps the first time in franchise history. At least for the first time since the early Kerry Collins days.
Pat, how BIG of an ending to his career would Smith have to have to be considered for Canton? Would the voters take into consideration that Smith has spent a large portion of his prime on a non-competing team with a non-factor QB and still put up amazing numbers, or is he doomed no matter what he does?
He'd have to put up big numbers for another four or five years and it wouldn't hurt if Panthers went deep in playoffs a few times.
If the falcons win a superbowl do i get some credit right pat???
Um, probably not. The only good thing out of your tenure was your brother helped turn Roddy White into a player.
see ya next fridday pat. any chances all 4 nfc south teams lose again this weekend?
Hope not, but we'll see. Thanks to all for stopping by. We'll do it again next week.
