Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hey everyone, let's get rolling.BW.

JLA2325 (Utah)

Any possibility of the Broncos signing a veteran FA DT now that the their veteran salary will not be guaranteed?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

The fact that it hasn't happened already is a bit surprising. So, right nwo, it doesn't appear to be a major issue.

Charlie (San Diego, CA)

What do you think is going to be the deciding factor in the NE vs SD game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

The Chargers' WRs vs. Patriots' DBs. If Chad Henne can throw for 416 what can the Charegrs do? If the Chargers are going to win this game, Philip Rivers' WRs must take this game over.

R8DRN8TN (MERCED, CA)

Hi Bill, Gotta say you're doing a good job, your posts are must read. Anyhow, I have never really been an Asamuga fan and when he left, I didn't think we would miss him very much because he always gave up that clutch catch or go ahead TD when we needed a stop. I think with our pass rush, our secondary should be respectable. What's your thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Very kind of you, Nation ... You're right that the Raiders' terrific front four will help this secondary, but Nnamdi was a stud. He cab't be replaced. But Oakland can survive because of the front.

SouthStands (Denver)

Bill...I want to give you some time for this one...Here's my take...with a healthy and effective Kyle Orton, Denver wins 5 or 6 games. With a disastrous Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn, or even Adam Weber, Denver wins 2 or 3 games. My question is this...what's the difference? As a Bronco fan, I could care less if Denver wins 3 or 4 more games with Orton. Denver would still miss the playoffs (badly) and be picking in the top 15. So what's wrong with seeing if anyone else on the roster can get it done?...one more thing...I don't care about the offensive line or the running game. Yes, those are issues in Denver, but when Orton was in Chicago, he had a young Thomas Jones (1300+ yards) and a great offensive line and still couldn't get it done. Orton struggles on 3rd downs and in the red zone...this is not news to anyone. To me...backed up by his career...Orton is an average QB at best. Why should Bronco fans endure season after season of mediocrity?Bottom line is this for me Bill...if Denver doesn't find out what Tebow/Quinn/Weber can do, Denver will be looking QB with their 1st round pick. Depending on how Tebow/Quinn/Weber look, Denver may be anyways. I just don't get what's wrong with finding out if anyone else on the roster has some promise.Sorry for the stupidly long post/question...should have hit your mailbag with this...

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I totally agree. Orton is better than what Denver has, but so what? They are 3-11 in their last 14 games with Orton. It's time to look for the future. Give the other guys a chance to show if they can be the guy. If not, then you have your answer and you can move on next year and take a Luck (if you are No. 1) or Jones or Barkley.

Butch (Texas)

Are the Broncos comfortable with their runningbacks or are looking at any street free agents?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Right now, they are sticking with what they have.

Dan (Olathe, KS)

How many carries per game do you see Dexter McCluster getting?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think it depends on the game situation. 4-8, maybe.

Matt (Iowa)

After Week 1 which team's defense impressed you the most?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Got to see San Dieog. It allowed Minnesota 26 yards of total offense in the second half.

Chris B. (Austin, TX)

Bill,If the Chargers somehow managed to not win this year's bleak AFC West, would the Norv Turner era finally come to an end?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

If they won less than 10 games and I didn't win the division, I'd say there they would be a real possibility of that

Fismail16 (Vancouver. BC)

Bill,Long time Chiefs fan here, watching that game on Sunday as depressing as it was...I can't help but feel like the Chiefs suffered from terrible play calling on the offensive side of the ball. The play calling had no complexity and it was actually repetitive at times...am I out too lunch? Also it appeared to me that they were pass first offense? I mean JC still avg. 5.6/carry..should they not have kept feeding him the rock. I like Haley as a HC, but if this keeps up I think something has to be done at OC, thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Well, they were pass-first because they fell behind quiickly. Let's give it a few games.

Coach Rob (San Diego)

What's the latest on Jacoby Ford's hamstring injury, BW? Will he be good to go this weekend, because right now my lineup is set and I would love to see him out there!

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

He's out of practice as we type right now. Tomorrow will be a big day for him.

Ed (San Diego)

Where does Tolbert's health stand? Good to go or are we going to see more of Mathews?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Tolbert is fine. Good to go.

R8DRN8TN (MERCED, CA)

Bill, with Jacoby Ford hurt, will we seeing more Hagen and Moore? I think they are an upgrade over Schillens and DHB at this point.

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I'd think so. If Ford can't go, I can't see Hagan being inactive again.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

If the Chiefs continue to unravel, will Cassel get benched?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

If he's terrible, sure. That would take a while.

Micraider (BFE Tejas)

Which has a bigger impact on KC's bad play as of recent..1. Injuries2. No more Weiss

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Right now, I'm saying injuries because they can't use the full playbook with Moeaki and Baldwin out.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Did we just see Mike Tolbert's best game fo the year, or will he be a productive player?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

He's a stud. Expect more to come.

Lawrence (Missouri)

Thomas Jones has nothing left to offer the Chiefs on the field, do you think we should release him and give the carries he would get to Le'Ron McClain? He is bigger, faster, and stronger than Thomas Jones and when he runs he shows a little bit of finesse you don't typically see a big man have.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I think that is a situation to monitor. I could see McClain taking more of Joens' carries soon.

Demetrick (South Carolina)

If Kevin Boss plays this weekend. Do you think that the Raiders passing game will improve from what they did in Week 1?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I think it would make Campbell more comfortable. He loves looking for his tight ends when he's in trouble.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Concerned at all about VJax, or is he still primed fo a huge year? Are the backs going to be more involved in the passing game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Le'ts see what he does this week. The Chargers have so many weapons. The plan changes week-to-week.

Scott (Utah)

Expect the raiders to eat up ground yards on the Bills. Last week the Bills faced an unprepared KC team. I understand they will be favored because of the Raiders travel and short week but being a huge Raider fan I'm surprised by all the certainty that they will destroy the Raiders. Your take?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I like the Raiders' chances.

Eric (CA)

Other than the Raiders and 'Skins, everyother road team on MNF gets a home game the next week. The Raiders get to travel 3,000 miles to Buffalo. Why does the NFL try to stick it to the Raiders at every opportunity?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

But they gave the the second and thrid worst teams in the NFL to start out against. If you go 2-0, you got eight home left and you are in good shape.

Ryan (San Diego)

How badly are the Pats going to beat up on my Chargers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I think it will be close, I really do. Wouldn't be shocked if the home team lost.

Justin (Denver)

Hey Bill, Love the blog. I just wanted to ask you if you think that the Chiefs problems are fixable (are they just getting up to speed from a slow-moving preason) or is this year going to be as disastrous as it looks with major injuries piling up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

Thanks, Justin ... The injuries really scare me. They have a lot to overcome.

Adam (Nashville)

Of the stadiums you have visited, which one best combines, class, charm, game day experience and is flat out the nicest in the NFL?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

There are a lot that are great. If I had to say my favorite, there's a cool join in Wisconsin.Love that place. Everything about it. I had the honor of working there every day in 1999. A career highlight.

Evan (San Francisco)

How excited would you be to (try to) tackle Bush after chasing McFadden for 3 quarters? Or Taiwan Jones on a 3rd down? I haven't been this excited about the Raiders ground game in a long time. Top 2 again this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Why not top 1?

John (Neb.)

Your prediction, Who will be Denver's starting QB by the end of the season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I'd say Tebow. It's crazy now in Denver. What is it going to be like if Orton starts 2-6?

aaron (denver)

What are your impressions of jared veldheer? I think he's going to be a very good player and has benefited from having Steve wisniewski on the raiders staff

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Both are good players. I thibnk Wiz has been better than expected so early. He's already a leader of that team. Great vlaue at No. 48.

Dominic (Calgary)

If McFadden can stay healthy is it a stretch to think he could win the rushing title?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Yes, I just worry about his health. He must stay healthy.

SouthStands (Denver)

Bill...thanks for answering my earlier question. With your answer and my thoughts being similar, what is the motivation for Elway and Fox to stick with Orton for even one more game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Sure .. I think they think, for now, they are beter off with the vet. Also, I don't think thye think Tebow is ready.

T.J. (Norman, OK)

What do you think was more impressive - New England's record tying 99 yard pass to Wes Welker or Sebastian Jani-kick-ski's record tying 63 yard field goal?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Since I was there, I'd say 63.

Autumn (Cedar Falls Iowa)

Is the media finally going to take the Raiders seriously?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

This one has and will. That's all I can speak for.

Adam (Nashville)

any news on Huff or C Johnson's status for Sunday?

Ihatehaley (KCMO)

What will it take to get rid of Haley?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

A seaosn full of the Buffalo outcome.

john (london England)

If new england gives up 400 yards to Henne, is it possible to think rivers could throw for over 500 easy. Miami has half the talent at wr and they were open all night, does jackson and company go crazy or what?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

500 is a huge number, but I think Rivers will toss the rock around a little bit.

Carlos (Los Angeles)

Giordano? Key Contributor all season or 1 game stud?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

We'll see, but he came up big in Week 1 just days after being re-signed.

Dominic (Calgary)

Bill, one more question since the Tebow debate seems to be the big news. If the Broncos organization isn't sold on him shouldn't they just cut their losses and move/release him? It seems to me that all this controversy isn't good for a rebuilding team.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

You are right. The worst thing that can happen to this team is for the Broncos to go into next year not knowing their answer about Tebow. They have either make him the QB for 2012 or cut him loose and move on.

John (Neb.)

Are you running out of patience with Knowshon Moreno? Besides lacking any explosiveness and getting hurt all the time, what is he good for? Can we label him a bust already?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

He was OK on screen plays. Yes, I know you want much more than from the No. 12 overall pick.

Garrett (Antelope)

Do you Garrard landing in the AFC West?? Why hasn't anyone picked him up yet?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I still think KC is the ebst bet of the division to get him, but I wouldn't say it's a sure thing.

Tom (L.A.)

Perhaps "media" would take the Raiders more seriously if they could make it through a game without committing 15 penalties.

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

That would probbaly help, Tom.

Justin (Dayton)

What's you penalty prediction for the Raiders in their next game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

8-9, maybe.

Keith (New Jersey)

based on what you saw during Monday's game, does DHB look like an improved player?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I liked the hands. He made a couple of big grabs. Let's see him keep it up.

bobbybudda99 (san diego)

do you think novak will be a decent kicker for the chargers, or do you think they should have gone after another kicker

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

There wasn't a lot whole of options. He was the best of the three SD looked at. But I do worry that he has just 30 career FG attempts and none since 2008.

Briner (Danville)

Southstands has limked you to cheetos, lasagna, hot dogs, and call you names. Why answer his questions?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Who cares about that sutff?I can take it.

Brad (hawaii)

Hey Bill, is there any reason to believe the Raiders' penalty woes will ever end? Or are they just doomed to lead the league in penalties every year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

It's been a long issue. But I like that Jackson is taking the issue serioously. He wants it to end now.

Connor (San Diego)

Which is a bigger loss, the Cheifs losing Berry or the Chargers losing Kaeding AND Castillo?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

And Moekai into the mix and it's KC.

Nick (Michigan)

Seems to me that Dave Rayner would have been a better option for the Chargers than Novak. He was pretty good last year in replacing Jason Hanson.

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

It came down to the Chargers liking Novak more on Tuesday.

PHIL (SAN DEGIO)

Do you think Vaughn Martin is ready and what kind of impact will he have?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

He looked good in the preseason. He better be ready now.

Michael (Rio Linda, CA)

If I want to become a sports blogger like yourself, what should my major be in college? Thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Journalism. Go get em/

Justin (Dayton)

I am somewhat confused on who is the Raider's number one receiver. I thought it was supposed Chaz Schillens or Murphy when he comes back?? It looked like DHB was targeted more on the few pass plays that we had.

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I don't the Raiders evne know that yet. It's a work in progress.

Nick (Michigan)

How do you see the Chiefs-Lions game playing out? Will the Chiefs D improve enough to hold the Lions offense in check or will the Lions throw the ball all over the field with Eric Berry out?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I'm very interested to see it. The Chiefs have to find a way to stay in this game.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour folks. Enjoy Week 2, everyone.
