Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Greetings all. Hope you are well and hydrated.

benn in katy (tejas)

PK, your initial take on Payton Manning's contract was that it was a win-win for all parties involved. Now that we've learned he didn't even take a physical and could barely even hold the pen he used to sign the contract what are your thoughts? Several ex-players and TV analysts (Deion Sanders for example) have stated that he should not have taken the money given his physical status while most of the media and Colts fans have praised Payton as a hero for taking about $10M less than he could have. I look forward to your response.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

The report that he didn't take a physical has been refuted by Bill Polian. And you're exaggerating beyond reason. The money he got/gets for this year is roughly $3 million more than the franchise tag was. They could cut him next year and be done if they want to. Hardly a disaster.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

What would be your game plan as the head coach of the Jaguars heading into New York this week? Same as last week pretty much?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I think that's the game plan every week. Ball control. Find a turnover or two. Defend the run. Will be harder against a better team like the Jets.

Ed Hoculi (Chat Ref)

Before we get started, I would just like to state a "point of emphasis". Thoughtful questions about Peyton Manning are always welcome. Wildly speculative statements about Manning and the Colts are legitimate fodder for PK's wrath, and may be flagged for penalty.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Amen.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, can you talk the Titans' fans off the ledge. Please tell us the offense will improve with more practice time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

The Titans won't be as bad as they were Sunday.

Dario (San Antonio, TX)

Hey Paul thanks for taking time out of your day for this. I was curious what you thought about the Texans D at the NT position. I saw a few times that Cody or Mitchell were getting pushed off the line opening up some big holes for the colts RB at times. Was wondering what you thought about this and how might this affect us against smash mouth run teams?thanks!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

It's not their strong spot. But if Antonio Smith and J.J. Watt play like they did and the linebackers are good, they can survive with those two.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, I texted you like you said, and the reply was a picture of this dog drinking a Zima! What's up with that? We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I wanted to get you laughing. Or have you been advised not to laugh yet?

Sean (Fort Wayne, IN)

I heard a rumor that JDR expects the defense to be a top ten D by the end of the year. Do you think that's possible?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

It's interesting that you heard it as a rumor. Because I believe I've heard him say it with TV cameras around. Which would make it more than a rumor. Get to 15. That would be a major jump and help them significantly.

bre baltimore,md [via mobile]

How far do you think the ravens will go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I picked them to miss the playoffs. Not changing course off one great game.

D-Grizzle (Clutch City)

With Houston getting hype as usual, Does Jacoby Jones step up? Is signing David Anderson back worth it ? Defense: Is Miami more of a challenge?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

They needed another receiver and Anderson knows the system and is cheap now, so why not? Jones is inconsistent. Look for one great catch and one bad drop. Miami is more of a challenge, but certainly beatable. and the mystery of a 3-4 is gone now.

Blake (Nashville)

Paul...maybe I am biased and a homer...BUT the Colts did play better in the 2nd half (holding the Texans scoreless and gaining more yards than Houston)...with KC getting more and more work in with the offense, couldn't this team still finish with around 8 wins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

The Texans let up. Colts could win eight, sure. Could also win four.

Finley (The Backyard)

We're out of Zima.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

It's on the list.

Mario Williams (Houston)

If I continue to perform, should I expect a fat new contract next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Perform and stay healthy. Then yes.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/28049/the-afc-south-is-the-texans-for-the-taking">The AFC South is the Texans' for the taking</a>

Jorge V (Houston)

If the texans miss the playoffs how good does Fisher sound?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

It would seem a nice match.

Miguel (Austin)

Have you heard anything about Marcedes Lewis' injury beyond a "calf strain"? Will he play this Sunday, and will the Jaguars let McCown actually play this game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

What was wrong with his "actual play" Sunday when he won a game? Lewis will test it Friday and we should know more then.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Repeated questions are unlikely to be answered.

Kenny Britt (Nashville)

I'm nipping at the heels of Andre but I will settle for the 2nd best WR in the division over Reggie...what do you say Paul??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I say you have a ways to go on the consistency front to be on the same list.

Peter (Denver)

PK, in your opinion at what we know about PM, do you think the wise decision is to put PM on the IR and move on OR continue the path Polian path?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

It's irrelevant, really. Until the Colts have seven injured players they need to deactivate on a Sunday and need the roster spot, it doesn't matter.

don mccon (jacksonville)

Do you think that Deji Karim can become a legitimate 2nd option at running back for the Jaguars? How many yards and carries can you see him actually getting next week versus the Jets?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I can't predict yards and carries. He's a nice alternative. I'd give it to MJD as much as possible.

Blake (Nashville)

There are grumblings in Colts nation that Caldwell needs to be replaced. Anyway he is on the hotseat or does Peyton's injury give him a free pass this year no matter how bad the season turns out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

I don't think he gets a free pass if Chris Polian is making a decision on him. That doesn't mean he's out. It means I expect he'll be evaluated.

Michael Griffin (Basptist Sports Park)

Will i ever return to pro bowl form or is it safe to label me a bust at this point? I know my play has become soft and i won't lay the boom down anymore.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

You are a complete mystery. Impossible to figure out.

texan (texas)

What will it take for Matt Schaub to show up in big games and key moments this year in stead of throwing two game losing pick 6s. I know he lead a couple comebacks against teams that didn't make the playoffs but what is gonna happen against Ptt or Bal or Atl or NO. Playmaker or game loser

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

It's time for him to make the leap. The stage is pretty set for him.

Jorge V (Houston)

If Jeff Fisher does come to Houston, how would you like the sound of a new and improved Vince Young?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

They hate each other.

texan (texas)

How can the team with the leagues leading rusher not have a probowl OL. Will Winston get it this year if we have similar results?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

I think he can pass block better.

Realist (In front of my computer)

Paul, please try to answer this if you can. What is it about the titans that seems keep them average or below more years than not. Is it a dysfunction between front office/owner and coaching, poor scouting,or something else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

In their last three seasons, how many losing seasons?

Sean Lee (Dallas)

I played out of my mind late last sunday. Am I for real or was this just my career game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I know the Jaguars really wanted to draft you. Good player.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do you thingk Tedy Bruschi's comments about Ocho were warranted, or a severe overreaction?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Glad he shared. Think it probably reflects how team feels, so it was informative.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Help me out here, Paul. A collection of Broncos fans are willing to fork out 10k on 2 billboards in downtown Denver in support of Tebow. What do you call a person who throws around that type of coin for billboards in support of a 3rd string QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

It's insane. Feed the hungry. Billboards for Tebow actually hurt his cause. Because if they put him in, at least one columnist will say they were reacting to billboards.

Jay (Knoxville)

Which game are you attending this week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Ravens-Titans.

Elizabeth (Goofing off at Work)

How much further away from the AFC South does Vince Young have to go play football, before you stop getting Vince Young questions in chat?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

They will never stop.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

John Oehser believes that Cecil Shorts has a good shot to be the Jaguars top receiver by the end of the season. I realize he didn?t do much in the receiving game against Tennessee (obviously, we ran the ball a lot), but based on what you?ve seen of Shorts I?d like to know your opinion on this.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I like him. John sees him a lot more than I do. I really like Mike Thomas. I don't know that Shorts passes him. But he could easily be No. 2. Heck, if Hill doesn't play Sunday and Shorts is good, he might come out of that game No. 2.

Shawn (Detroit)

What are your thoughts on Delone Carter??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

I love him. I love him even more in a Peyton Manning offense.

Nate (Indy)

I have an idea for a future article: 5 Winners and 5 Losers if Peyton Misses the Season. Not saying anyone actually *wants* him to not play, but it's an interesting question. Can you count Gary Kubiak among the potential winners, and primetime NFL networks as potential losers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Yes you can and yes you can.

Ryan (St. Johns, FL)

How did the Jaguars' DTs perform against the Titans last weekend? I know the defense as a whole bottled up CJ and the run, but is that a true indicator of DT performance?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

They controlled the Titans interior offensive line for sure.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

With what Ben Tate was able to do last week, does this affirm that the Texans are similar offensively to the Broncos under Shanahan - namely, plug any runner behind their line and ZBS and he'll have success?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

I don't know that a second-round pick is "any runner."

John (H Town)

could randy moss be the extra playmaker to take Hou on a good playoff run. I know we are short on cash but Moss and Andre could be something special.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I believe Moss is done. You can't live on reputation, you have to produce.

Chris Hope (MRI Machine)

If i miss time due to my should injury and am out played by babs during my absence will the Fisher rule apply and get my starting job back when i'm better? I too like Michael have become a mystery. Don't you agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

You are not as mysterious, because you are getting old. If Jordan Babineaux is good, I think that your injury could really linger, if you get my drift.

Kashan (Virginia Beach VA)

What do you think the are chances the Jags win the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

21 percent.

Ryan (Houston)

Do you think Foster is the real deal? Or do you think it is as simple as plug and chug like Demeco Ryan's said? He basically said because the O-line is so good, you can plug any decent RB in and they will be productive. I see his point, but Foster is clearly more talented than Tate/Ward.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Foster is very good. The system is very good. Ward and Tate are good.

Louis (Houston)

What are your predictions this week for afc south teams

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

I don't predict games.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Do you see Will Rackley taking a step back (if you will) in his play this weekend? I fear the Jets blitzing schemes might exploit him.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

A reasonable worry.

Elizabeth (Goofing off at Work)

My buddy in Baltimore and I have a running "barbecue bet" on the Ravens/Titans game each year. Which Tennessee BBQ joint do you recommend I use to pay up on Monday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Jack's?

Stan (Nashville)

The Titans appear to be chronically bad at tackling, continuing last year's trend. Did/Will the reduction in padded practices under the new CBA affect their chances to improve?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

They were scheduled to be in pads today. You don't need to hit Thursday to tackle Sunday, however, if you are well taught and play smart.

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: I think Polian did the Colts a great dis-service to build a team that is sooooo tied to Peyton. What I mean is that they have little ability to compete without him out due to injury. Defense still will be gashed, OL tailored to just keep rushers off long enough to get rid of the ball, where any other QB does not have that inate ability in that offense. Arrogant in my opinion........MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

So for 13 years, the plan worked. We're going to call them fools for not having a plan that worked for 14 years? I'd trade the 13 years they've had for one year of uncertainty.

Brent (Charlotte )

Chances Titans win division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

8 percent.

brandon (texas)

Does Houston need to trade for another top WR or a top NT to finish filling out their roster and give them the best chance to make a deep playoff run?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

I wouldn't count on a trade. It is baseball-think, not football reality.

Midge (Indy)

If you had to pick one unemployed coach to replace Caldwell and help Peyton get another ring, who would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Jeff Fisher. Fisher has a relationship with Polian where I think they could coexist.

Adam (Nashville)

Yanks or Sox out of the American League? Come on, Paul, I know you love baseball. Give us a prediction

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Grew up in suburban NY, so of course Yanks. Sox will gag.

Jason (Hou)

D Brown looked pretty good to me against colts DEs. has he turned a corner in his game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Good game. One game.

Kate (IN)

Phillip Wilson thinks we'll see Pat McAfee attempt a FG this season. Think Caldwell will give him a shot in some long distance cases?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Yes. End of half or game.

Adam (Nashville)

NFL stadium you love to visit most? And why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Lambeau is awesome. But for entire experience, I like Heinz Field, Soldier Field and whatever Qwest Field is now called the best.

Kashan (Virginia Beach VA)

What is up with Clint sessions only playing 6 downs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Crazy, but surely a one-game thing where they felt they had to play certain packages more. Maybe there is an injury issue?

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Chances Indy wins the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

7 percent

Mark (TN)

How bad does the Titans record have to be in order for Jake Locker to start?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

For all the Locker questions. I don't expect to see him anytime soon if Matt Hasselbeck is healthy. Same with Blaine Gabbert and Luke McCown.

Adam (Nashville)

chances your percent answers are just random numbers and you are laughing at the questions? Im gonna call 95%

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Actually I just did the math. Leaves Houston at 64 percent. Comes out about right for me.

brandon (texas)

Which game is this weeks game of the week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Among our teams? I think Baltimore-Tennessee. Though Jax-Jets and Indy-Cleveland can also be good. Not expecting much out of Miami.

Charlie (East Nashville, TN)

Should I stop looking for a reasons to be encouraged about the Titans D-line? Or should I remain in denial and chalk that performance up to the heat, youth, and injuries to Jones and Morgan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Have to be better with a full cast of characters.

Mike (London)

How well do you think Akeem Ayers fared?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Not bad for first time.

Mike (Jersey)

Why doesn't Indy go after Garrard?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Because the Colts don't think he's good?

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

I was thinking about how much the Jags were playing in nickel (and even dime) packages during the Tennessee game. Odd, though, being that Tennessee is also more of a running team like the Jags. Any chance this means the Jags feel they can stop the run with 6 up front?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Maybe. But I would think they'd go with a 3-3 front instead of a 4-2 considering the investment in Session and his ability to hit backs.

Ryan (Nebraska)

If the Jags are like 2-4 or 1-5 by week six can we see a mid season firing of Del Rio? And if you're willing to hazard a guess, who could they chase as a replacement? New blood or a jobless great?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I do not see an in-season move. If they made one, they'd promote Dirk Koetter in all likelihood. It's really difficult to bring in an outsider in-season.

Realist (In front of my computer)

Paul, It is rude to answer a question with a question. I asked for your professional opinion having covered the titans for 15 years regarding their commitment to averageness (franchise record 391-408) what do you see as the problem. Please answer.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I think a relatively stable franchise competes some years, is average some years and stinks some years. In a big time frame, it amounts to average, which is the league's design. They've made some bad decisions. They've made some good decisions. Right now the problem is insufficient talent, and that comes from busting at No. 6 and No. 3 in the draft.

Elizabeth (Goofing off at Work)

Total Chat Question Count?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

325

Chad (Jupiter)

Assuming the Colts are without Peyton for 2 months do you think Collins has enough in the tank to maintain and allow the Colts to be in a position to still make the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I do not.

Marshy (MD)

Nice video of you on AFC 411, you look in good shape. Been working out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Funny and hurtful at the same time.

Willow (Southside)

You had a caller use 5 straight cliches when defending the Titan's chances against the Ravens this morning on the Zone. What is the record for most straight cliches by a caller or chatter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Don't know, but we may have to start keeping count.

m.k. (paradise)

Nothing on the Steve McNair skeleton in J ville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I don't see why it's worth comment or attention.

Luke (EverBank Stadium)

How good am i Really?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

About average.

Michael (Cleveland, Ohio)

Do you think the Browns O-Line will be able to handle the Colts DE's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

If they are running a lot, yes.

Paul (Houston)

Last call...

Tony Horton (P90X DVD)

Where have you been? Just do your best and forget the rest!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

We had a rough separation. Now I need your starter DVD for fat people. Hook me up.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

You just affirmed for me why I think the Jags pass defense will better this season. Not only due to the additions of the free agents and rookies, but being able to stop the run against some teams with 6 up front and run nickel 30-40 plays per game will lend itself to thicker pass coverage. Better players. More coverage. Formula for improvement. Not saying it will necessarily be drastic, but much improved. Thanks for the chat today, Paul! Great time!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Thank you Kevin, we'll make yours the final word. Cheers to all.
