Chat with Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:04 PM)

Hi everyone - Thanks for coming. Appreciate you stopping by on this Tuesday after the first week of football. WHat's on your mind?

Drew (((NY)))

So Stephen Jackson injured already, how long will he be out?

Stephania Bell
  (3:06 PM)

Drew: How many times did you hit the "post" button? No way to know for sure. Muscle strain, no grade of severity given. It has to be more than "nothing" since he was out of the game quickly and the team has indicated they don't expect him to play next Monday night, but whether it's 1-2 weeks or 3-4, that remains to be seen.

Joe (San Francisco)

Will Lance Moore be good to go this week or should I play it safe and start Garcon as my WR3 instead?

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

Joe: We're waiting to see if Moore practices. Last week he didn't practice and didn't even make the trip with the team. He will have had an extra 10 days but until he is cleared for practice we won't know if he's looking game ready yet. Would plan on having a backup ready.

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

If you lost Nate Kaeding, SDUT writer Kevin Acee reporting via Twitter that Nick Novak is the new Chargers kicker.

Ethan (Charlotte)

Hi Stephania! Any insights or thoughts on playing availability of both Utley and R.Weeks for championship week(this week)? Thanks alot!

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

Ethan: Utley looks as if he'll be cleared to return Thursday and Weeks was expected to get back in the lineup in the middle of this week (or perhaps a little later) - but should be back this week at some point.

Tim (Pittsburgh, PA)

any news on Moreno? Looked like cramps last night to his hamstring.. have you heard any updates? Saw an MRI was scheduled for today.. Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:11 PM)

Tim: Was hard to tell. Both he and Lloyd reportedly headed for MRIs so we will wait and see. Neither looked to be writhing in pain but both were held out eventually in the 4th q. Both also with history of soft tissue injuries so a little more worrisome...

Mike (orange county, ca.)

Please tell me that H. Nicks will be alright to play this week!!!!!

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Mike: It sounds like there's not a structural injury to keep him out but if he still has significant swelling, he simply won't be able to run effectively and therefore won't be able to play. They have a Monday night game so he's got some extra time - but we'll have to see what happens with practice as the week goes on.

Paul (Washington DC)

Stephania - what's going on with Sidney Rice? Should I drop him now or give him some time?

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Paul: It's early, so if you have room on your roster, I say give it some time. But not a ton of time. He apparntly hurt himself during camp, initially got better, then got worse again. No practice even this past week. But if he can come back in the next few weeks, he's worthwhile.

Garrett (Richmond, VA)

Hi Stephania. With the nature of Danny Amendola's injury, what are the chances that he fully recovers to last year's form by the end of the season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:16 PM)

Garrett: DIslocated elbow - but the fact that the team thinks he won't need surgery is a good sign. Sometimes there's so much damage in the joint as a result of the injury that they need to surgically repair it and that would be season-ending. As it stands now, sounds like they will splint it and see how he does. If all goes well, could be a few weeks - but if heals slowly, etc then could end up stretching out longer.

Dan (Boston)

It's tough being a Niners fan in Patriots-land, but even tougher owning Arian Foster. What's his outlook for this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:18 PM)

Dan: Coach Kubiak wants him to practice -sort of the proof that he can do what he will need to do in-game. He's been running harder every day - and apparently had a good Monday workout - but a lot will hinge on whether he can actually mix it in in practice.

rob (myrtle beach,sc)

Hey Stephania,i'll forgive you for being a football(49ers) fan.Josh Beckett,what say you?Thanks.

Stephania Bell
  (3:19 PM)

Rob: He had a good first session on the mound, all of which points to him playing this weekend. Not sure what day he would get the start off the top of my head but the ankle sounds like it held up to the mound delivery OK.

Bryce (Charleston, SC)

Hey Steffie Bad News,What's the Tolbert Report?

Stephania Bell
  (3:20 PM)

Bryce: It's all good apparently. Gor clearance yesterday to return to practice and the Chargers expect him to play in Week 2.

J.B. (PA)

To the lady who puts the glitter in Twitter: Any word on the nerve issue with Bradford's finger? I've got 'The Sanchize,' ready to go just in case Sam sits. Thanks a lot.

Stephania Bell
  (3:22 PM)

J.B. Clever - why thank you. Sounds like no big deal from their perspective. X-rays negative. Whether he bruised the nerve or whether there was swelling affecting a nerve in his index finger is unclear but nothing is broken, supposedly good range of motion even on Monday. If the numbness/tingling settles quickly then he should really have no issue and he has until Monday night.

CJ (Atl)

Is Miles Austin healthy? Who is the better RB play this week: Fred Jackson, Deanglo Williams or Beanie Wells?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

CJ: AUstin looked good to me Sunday night so I'm not currently worried about his hamstring. It's always nice to see guys get a few weeks under their belt though to really exhale. As for your better play question? Haven't looked at all the matchups - but I like Jackson (can't believe Carolina will have it easy in Pitt)

Brian (ATL)

I watched the tape twice and can not see were H. Nicks injured his knee. Any ideas to what happened or whats going on?

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Brian: He caught a pass and landed hard directly on the front of his knee at the out of bounds markers.

Will (VA)

Great show today on 06010. Any news on Brandon Marshall?

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Will: Why thanks! Hope all of to are able to download - and listen - to the podcast...Marshall apparently was having injuries with cramps. I thought it was curious that Miami players struggled with cramps. Patriots players didn't seem to struggle with, well, much of anything.

Brendan (LI )

noticing alot of hate on the bottom of page. Smurf them! You do a great job!

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Brendan: I will post your nice comment. Always going to be some hate - just try to ignore...

scott (work)

This chat should be later in the week. That is all

Stephania Bell
  (3:30 PM)

Scott: there is always one on Friday. Don't need to come until then if you don't like.

Nick (Atlanta)

Is Peyton worth holding onto in a non-keeper? What about a keeper league where one can keep P Manning in the third round indefinitely?

Stephania Bell
  (3:31 PM)

Nick: Don't think I keep him in a non-keeper. Expect him out 3 months - and lots of variables betwen now and then to determine whether he comes back. But in a keeper league, I keep him. Expect he will come back, strong, eventually.

Bryce, 2 and Drew, 4 (Our dad is making us write this)

Hi Miss Steph, Our dad wants to know if Dez Bryant will be a full go this week.

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

So cute that Dad is bringing you into fantasy life this will be ringers. Apparently, beyond the cramps, it was a bruised quad that slowed Bryant late in the game, which is making the Cowboys rethink using him on kick returns. Didn't get the sense that he is destined to miss time, but whether he's at 100% will probably be up in the air until late in the week (or even gametime).

Keenan (Bald Head Island, NC)

My Girlfriend wants to co-manage my fantasy team. Thoughts?

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Keenan: She's awesome - you should encourage, welcome this even.

James (Fort Walton Beach, FL)

Hey Step! What's up with Crabtree's foot? He said he was in a significant amount of pain on Sunday. Is he gonna be worth anything this year?

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

James: Now feeling far more nervous about Crabtree on a roster - I think I'd keep him for a while and watch what happens. He said pain was so bad he had to come out of the game. Now also says he expects to have pain all year long and he will just come out of games when necessary. Not what I want to hear as a fantasy owner.

Drew (((NY)))

just for the record my fiancee cant and will not ever touch my teams, she has her own team to manage. (which i think might be better than mine)

Stephania Bell
  (3:37 PM)

Ahhh you are afraid of being shown up. It happens...

Joel (Michigan)

("can't believe Carolina will have it easy in Pitt") Isnt Carolina home against Green Bay ?

Stephania Bell
  (3:39 PM)

Joel: Like I said, wasn't all up on the matchups off the top of my head - knew it was a tough opponent - now it's even worse

Juan S. (OC, CA)

trying to acquire a DAL WR, whos long term health is more concerning, dez or miles?

Stephania Bell
  (3:39 PM)

Juan: To me, Dez, for sure. Always with the giant upside but an extensive ionjury history from college forward. Until I see reason to believe otherwise, just know he comes with risk

Joseph ((St. Louis) )

Stafford went off limping at the end of the game. Any concerns?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Joseph: Thanks for noticing. I did see Stafford look like he was walking stiff-legged. But minutes later he was smiling. Think it may have been cramps like many others. No word of any Stafford injury.

Note on Girlfriend help (Not ashamed, USA)

My girlfriend has been my offensive coordinator for a couple of years now and I have made the playoffs ever since she started helping

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

While I love the post, have to ask why you're hiding your name?

Marcie (Seattle)

Hi stephania! I think I am cursed. I lost kaeding and steven jackson due to injuries and Schaub was awful. Please help! Do you think if Nicks is out Manningham is a decent play? I have Meachem and Wallace in at receiver now. I have bradshaw and f jax in as well should I flex tolbert, starks or manningham?

Stephania Bell
  (3:44 PM)

Marcie: It's OK. Really. Nicks isn't down the drain or anything - might just be a week (or so we hope). But if you have Manningham, then you're good. He will see a lot of targets, Meachem could see more esp if Moore stays out. That said, I love Tolbert and Starks. Would go with Tolbert, then Manningham. Starks will emerge but it could take a few games as they will also rotate Grant.

Roger (Portsmouth, NH)

Is Nelson Cruz playing tonight? expectations?

Stephania Bell
  (3:46 PM)

Cruz I believe to be activated today. But he is saying he won't be stealing any bases. He's not 100 percent which with his history makes me a bit nervous.

PB (Tied for first)

Any word on Ward's ankle? If Foster sits, I'll feel a lot more comfortable playing Tate over Best if I know Ward is still hurting...

Stephania Bell
  (3:47 PM)

PB: Ward is day-to-day but there's certainly no scare right now of a big injury. Imagine if Foster out he starts again.

Jacoby Jones (Houston)

I want to pick myself up, but I'm not sure how long Kevin Walter will be out for. Any ideas?

Stephania Bell
  (3:50 PM)

I imagine Walter out at least this week (though team has not said so), maybe another week. Last year believe it was Louis Murphy who had a similar injury, tried to play through it and struggled for a few weeks b/c it was so painful. Better to let Walter rest a week and go from there.

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Computer lockup problem...

David (NC)

You got to hate it when you lose by .4 pts. How long should I be mad before I focus on week 2?

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

David: I've been there. You're allowed to be upset today. THen move on. It will happen to someone else in your league very soon.

Don (MN)

How hard is it to play through what Kevin Youkilis is going through?

Stephania Bell
  (3:54 PM)

Don: Very. Hip issues. Sports hernia which will need offseason surgery. He will not be moving quickly. Should be able to swing the bat OK, prob decent at third. Will struggle to eke out the extra base.

Paul (Boston)

Baseball playoffs here. Adam Jones has been a stud alll year and now is failing me. What's up with his helath?

Stephania Bell
  (3:56 PM)

Paul: Well, he's had a troublesome ankle, then had the thumb issue. But x-rays on his thumb were negative and I think he's coming back tonight. So hopefully turns a corner for playoffs.

David (Miami)

What are some D/ST to look for in week 2?

Stephania Bell
  (3:57 PM)

David: Ravens D is pretty fired up after a multi-turnover day. Bears defense looked pretty good. And yes, my Niners, well, they looked OK (could have been better) but Ted Ginn on special teams showed something so if ST counts for you, consider them.

SB, was Jaoby Jones hurt last night, he just all of a sudden disappeared

Stephania Bell
  (3:59 PM)

Dan: Jones just isn't going to get used as much when running a lot and he's also a special teams guy for them. If Walter is out though, would not be surprised if he catches a few more balls.

Lori (SF)

My first year with Fantasy Football. Got hammered this weekend and the Pats D really did not help last evening. Which 2 would be the best play via RB's moving forward. Ryan Matthews, M Turner & D Sproles?

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

Lori: Hang in there. Even the best get hammered at least one week. Sproles has great upside. Like him. Here's my quandary. Mathews has potential but Tolbert will get more TDs I believe. Turner did not look as explosive to me as he has in the past - and Atlanta will throw more this year. But he is still the starter. So prob Turner. TOugh call for me. But I definitely want Sproles. And if you have all 3, just look at weekly matchups to decide. May favor someone.

Stephania Bell
  (4:02 PM)

Thanks for coming to the Tuesday chat folks. We'll be back Friday at 11 a.m. EDT to do it all over again. See you then.

SB, I meant J. Ford, senior moment

Stephania Bell
  (4:04 PM)

One final PS post for Dan. Now I understand...and yes, he hurt his hamstring so left in the 3rd q. No indication as to severity. We'll prob hear Weds.
