Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (11:00 AM)

Welcome everyone! Ready to have some fun and talk some golf?

Benny (NYC)

Who has the heaviest bag out there?

Michael Collins
  (11:01 AM)

Vijay, not even close, sometimes he keeps his weighted club in the bag for the whole round. Brutal!

Joe S. (CT)

Who would most loopers choose--a jerk who wins regularly or a mellow guy who wins occasionally?

Michael Collins
  (11:02 AM)

Most would take the mellow guy, the jerk is probably gonna fire you before it would make it worth the abuse. The mellow guy will always be good to you.

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Do you think Fluff thanks his lucky stars every night that he landed with Furyk and avoided the whole Tiger disaster?

Michael Collins
  (11:04 AM)

I think Fluff thanks his lucky stars for having a boss that treats him like family and has allowed him to have a long fruitful career. He'd have a job even if Furyk never happened but he's been very blessed to have gotten that job.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When you think that we will see a Female Golfer playing in the PGA?

Michael Collins
  (11:06 AM)

Not for a while. It was kinda cool the first time Wie almost made the cut in Hawaii and Annika almost made the cut at Colonial but no one has come close since then. And Lexi is smart, her dad has already said no way is she gonna play on the guys tour.

Jason (MD)

When talking about the Playoffs and the Money on the line most of the guys side step the money aspect and just talking about winning this tourny and the next and that "its not about the money." Do they really think we buy anything they are saying? of course its about the money.

Michael Collins
  (11:08 AM)

That's an easy thing to say but you have to understand if we were only playing for $5 bucks, these guys would wanna win. They wanna be the best, and if they can beat the best, even if it's only to win $1, they'll play. That the money is crazy good is just a bonus. But the $10 mil does have everyone's attention this week.

Mike (NYC)

Who you taking this week? Im going Phil with my sleeper pick Charlie 3 sticks.

Michael Collins
  (11:09 AM)

I picked Webb. He's in such a good place right now, he's gonna be tough.

Chris (MD)

Who would have the most fun with the 10mm? we know DJ is throwing a big party...im rooting for a young guy to win becuase of this fact. If a guy like kuch, stricker etc. win they will prob use the money to invest in mutual funds. What would you do?

Michael Collins
  (11:11 AM)

I'd put half away first, take care of family and friends in need, then throw a HUGE party. Maybe rent an island in the carribean. You coming to the party if I win the lottery?!

Michael Collins
  (11:11 AM)

And I'm not quitting this job either! Might not work as much, but...

Max (CA)

How to caddies get paid? do they get a check from the Pro on the 15th and 30th..or a check every week based on 10% of winnings?

Michael Collins
  (11:13 AM)

Weekly. There's a set weekly pay then a percentage of winnings. Remember if a player doesn't make the cut he gets paid $0, but a caddie still has to pay all his own expenses, ie. airfare, hotel, rental car, etc.

Marc (Charlotte)

Would ESPN let you be on Feherety's show if he ran out of people to interview?

Michael Collins
  (11:14 AM)

I think they'd let me do it but you know how far down the list I'd be. The janitor would be on before me! LOL

Adam (Work)

Where you at? You are late!

Michael Collins
  (11:15 AM)

You just missed the beginning, I've been here the whole time!

Nick (OB)

I bumped into Spencer LEvin at the BMW last week. He was pretty surly. How is he viewed on tour?

Michael Collins
  (11:16 AM)

Spencer is very well liked. He comes across surly if he is having a bad day, or if he doesn't know you. But who among us doesn't come across that way if we're having a bad day?

Adam (Work)

Have you ever witnessed a complete meltdown between a caddy and player on course or do they always save it for the locker room?

Michael Collins
  (11:18 AM)

I saw a few complete meltdowns. Two caddies walked off on their players DURING a round! Couple of players fired their caddies mid round. Doesn't happen very much now cause of all the cameras out there.

Sam (Nj)

Do coaches get paid like Caddies? a % of winnings? example, does Sean Foley get a bonus for Rose's win last week? or is it a set fee from the start?

Michael Collins
  (11:19 AM)

most coaches get a straight percentage

Chris (MD)

Im def coming to the party (wearing my Skins gear)

Michael Collins
  (11:19 AM)

you'd get kicked off the boat halfway to the island. hope you can swim!! j/k

Eric (Nj)

Is Vick going to play this weekend? Should i bench him for Kolb in Fantasy? If Tuck gets a clean look at him - lights out

Michael Collins
  (11:20 AM)

sounds like you already made you decision. i think Vick will play though. Expect Kafka to see some action.

Mikey (UK)

Chances of Justin Rose going back-to-back? He seems to be a streaky player...

Michael Collins
  (11:21 AM)

Unlikely, such a different course, it's a really tough adjustment puuting.

Michael Collins
  (11:21 AM)

oops, putting. No spell check in a chat!! LOL

John (The couch)

We know Jacobson is the ping pong player on tour. Any other guys have some interesting talents / athletic abilities (beisdes woodland and DJ being bball players)

Michael Collins
  (11:23 AM)

Kuchar is big time at tennis, Sergio too. There are a few guys that could be pro fisherman on the bass circuit. And Woody Austin is a great bowler.

Adam (Work)

Do caddies get sponorship money like the players do? Or do they only get a percentage of what the player gets?

Michael Collins
  (11:26 AM)

Stevie was the last guy to have a sponsor deal (Valvoline). There is a deal with Nature Valley, you'll see some caddies wearing those hats, but that's a points based system.

Artie (bk)

We know a lot of players are members of big clubs like Lake Nona or Isleowrth. How do the pros interact with the other members. Do they take the time to get to know everyone or stay in their own "click"

Michael Collins
  (11:28 AM)

most pros that belong to a club get to know the members, make friends or have a group of people they hang with, they're just regular guys who happen to be better at this game then the rest of us.

Shoshana (Boston)

How much do most caddies work? Are they expected to be around at their players off week practice sessions?

Michael Collins
  (11:29 AM)

60% of guys don't live near their players so when it's a week off, it really is a week off. There are some who live near their pros and work with them on weeks off but not many.

Matt (Ohio)

When is Rickie Fowler going to break through and win? more importantly when is he going to cut that ridiculous hair. hes not 16 anymore

Michael Collins
  (11:31 AM)

Sounds like not only do you need the number to the psychic hotline, but you're bald and upset about it too...Rickie will win next year, and he doesn't need to cut his hair.

Shoshana (Boston)

I'm assuming all the caddies on tour are pretty good, are there a few that are viewed as the best (the way we see players)?

Michael Collins
  (11:33 AM)

Most caddies on tour are very good, but there are some that even we'd say are above and beyond. There's never really been a survey amongst caddies to see who'd be up there, but you just gave me a great idea for a story

x4 (Chicago)

Thoughts on Ryan Moore's mentality/game? Do you like the ties?

Michael Collins
  (11:34 AM)

I like him. He's a different cat, kinda like Jesper when he first came out but quieter and more reserved. I love the fact that he'll go old school with the outfits sometimes.

Andy (NC)

Thinking about switching careers and getting into the golf industry (either running a club or marketing for a brand.) I see these golf shcools advertised online/Tv (Keiser univ) are these scams or can they help you break into the industry?

Michael Collins
  (11:35 AM)

I look at those like I look at the online colleges. Answer your question?

Slo Mo (MIA)

Will a South Florida course ever host a major? #THE BLUE MONSTER

Michael Collins
  (11:36 AM)

Not the Blue Monster but at some point I think FL (maybe not South FL) will get a major.

Adam (Work)

When is Tiger going to respond to Andres Gonzalez on Twitter!?!?! I love the tweets Andres is sending out...HILARIOUS!

Michael Collins
  (11:37 AM)

I want to go to San Jose just in case they actually get to meet. I'm hoping the Tour pairs them on Thursday and Friday but the Tour isn't know for it's sense of humor.

Shoshana (Boston)

Have you ever been in a Ryder or Pres Cup team room? Any good stories? Things we'd be surprised to hear?

Michael Collins
  (11:38 AM)

Never been in a team room, and the stories I've been told... I was sworn to secrecy! If I tell you... lol

MaryC (My kitchen)

Do you think the LPGA should grant Lexi Thompson full fledged membership or limited membership until she is 18?

Michael Collins
  (11:40 AM)

Full fledged membership. NO question. The US has been waiting for the next young phenom, well here she is. Embrace her. They're slitting their throats by not coming out and saying she's in.

Shoshana (Boston)

Do you need an assistant? I'm really good at research!

Michael Collins
  (11:41 AM)

If I'm allowed to have an intern... but I think the new guy (me) doesn't get stuff like that!

John (mich)

Whats the worst shot you have seen in person on tour? I think i saw Woody austin shank a iron shot 1 time.otherwise they seem to hit the sweetspot 98% of the time..do they ever shank?

Michael Collins
  (11:43 AM)

Seen a lot of shanks. More than 50 during tournaments and by the pros, but tv doesn't wanna show them and a bunch are hit by guys who are NOT near the top of the leaderboard so there aren't cameras around

Jess Haynes (Hilton Head Island)

Who wins on the course out of Romo and Ryan. I am liking the new playing lessons with atheletes

Michael Collins
  (11:44 AM)

Even Romo has admitted his game has no chance against a PGA Tour pro's

Jess Haynes (Hilton Head Island)

Can't wait to meet you in person and play on Sea Island next month! Dreams do come true!!!!!!!!

Michael Collins
  (11:44 AM)

You haven't seen me play yet. Could be your worst nightmare!

Michael Collins
  (11:45 AM)

If there was one player other than Phil or Tiger you'd pay to see play who would it be?

Mikey (UK)

Thanks for the chat Michael. If you could go back in time and be on a player's bag for one round, which would it be?

Michael Collins
  (11:47 AM)

It's my pleasure. I take any round at the US Open at Pebble when Tiger won. No one ever saw a man beat the game of golf before, those four days, Tiger didn't just beat the field, he beat the game. I'd love to be on the bag for one of those rounds.

Chris (Lincoln,RI)

Dustin Johnson or Gary Woodland

Michael Collins
  (11:47 AM)

good answewr

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

Michael, I know you are new but there is no room for "lol"ing in the chat unless you are a teenage girl.

Michael Collins
  (11:48 AM)

Who's chat room is it? I can LOL, or LMAO as much as I want! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLTeenagers LOVE ME!

Shoshana (Boston)

If you could make any two changes to the Fed Ex Cup what would they be?

Michael Collins
  (11:49 AM)

No one gets any money until they make BMW. Then Tour Championship is match play. That is a "playoff".

Andy (NC)

Who deserves the captains pick the most? (snedkar, Haas, bradley) id go with Haas just becuase Jay is the assist. cap. Those 3 are all equal talents at this point in the year

Michael Collins
  (11:51 AM)

Such a hard question cause anyone of them would be a great pick. I'd go Bradley cause he has a grinder mentality which you need in match play

Jess Haynes (Hilton Head Island)

I would pay to see Watson,Fowler, and Kutcher. I only go to Harbor Town so most of the top guys take that week off unfortunatley.

Shoshana (Boston)

Other than Tiger or Phil the one person I'd pay to see play is Jack. On the current tour, outside of those two, there really isn't any one player who has really separated themselves as unique on a consistent basis (but I like seeing a bunch of them)

Kevin (NJ)

Is Keegan Bradley a layup for the Presidents Cup team?

Michael Collins
  (11:53 AM)

No, because Haas and Snedeker are ranked above him and Couples said the other two are on the short list. It's a toss up right now.

Shoshana (Boston)

Is there much interaction between caddies/players off the course? or is there sort of a class division?

Michael Collins
  (11:55 AM)

not much class division nowadays. Lots of players and caddies hang out together.

Mike (NYC)

out of the caddies on tour who are the best golfers (besides Zach Johnson)?

Michael Collins
  (11:56 AM)

well don't forget, Brett Waldman made it thru q-school to get on the Nationwide Tour this year. And Kip Henley play in Memphis this year. There are prob 4 guys out there that have game that could hang.

Chris (Lincoln,RI)

Michael, what do you have in your bag?

Michael Collins
  (11:58 AM)

TaylorMade R11 driver, Adams Hybrid, Callaway X20 Irons, Vokey wedges, Scotty Cameron putter. Play Titleist ProV1 ball

Chris Hanson (via mobile)

Michael, we may need to have a talk.

Michael Collins
  (11:59 AM)

email me, ESPNCaddie@gmail.com. I'll answer.

Kevin (NJ)

Other than Tiger playing at the Frys and the guys on the #125 bubble, what can the PGA do to make the Fall Series more interesting?

Michael Collins
  (12:01 PM)

I wish I had the answer to that, but because of what golf is competing against it's tough. And the Tour doesn't wanna focus on the money but that's what the Fall is about. Gotta find a way to make the stories of guys trying to keep their cards more compelling.

Michael Collins
  (12:02 PM)

Wish I had more time y'all! That was a blast. Let's do it again on Monday at 3 pm! If you need anything else between now and then email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.com. I will answer you. Thanks again y'all!
