Chat with Todd Archer

Todd Archer
  (1:01 PM)

Let's go ...

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that we will see Tony Romo play this Week at Washington?

Todd Archer
  (1:03 PM)

Yes, I do. As he said after the San Francisco game, if he was able to play Sunday, he will be able to play vs. the Redskins. I'm sure he will be limited during the course of the week in practice. It'll be a pain issue, but I think he plays.

Pj (Oklahoma)

Todd what I saw last week with Tony Romo coming back and winning that game was heroic but my question is why would they consider trying to get him back for the Redskins game and risk injury? Kitna is a solid backup and can beat Washington.

Todd Archer
  (1:05 PM)

I understand the point. The Cowboys' medical staff will not throw him out there if he is not cleared. Kitna did OK vs. San Francisco and would be better with more work in a week of practice, but I wouldn' chalk up a win vs. the Redskins. These games are always close and the Cowboys have to get to 2-1 with Detroit coming in next week. Wait, did I just say that?

Chris ,wv [via mobile]

I have watched T. Choice since his bowl game at GT, when ever he got the chance like against the steelers he has been a beast when he's not looking over his shoulder. What is the knock on him that he doesnt get a shot at being the back un dallas?

Todd Archer
  (1:06 PM)

Choice is solid. Not great. Solid. He doesn't do any one thing great. He has done well with the limited opportunities he's had. Clearly the coaches have something they don't like. We've never been given an answer when asked about it.

Heath (Fort Worth)

If Dez and Miles are out....how will we score? Just Witten or maybe a running game?

Todd Archer
  (1:07 PM)

You don't believe in the power of Jesse Holley after what you saw Sunday? Even if Miles and Dez were to play Sunday - I think Bryant returns, by the way - the Cowboys would struggle with points this week.

Shawn (NC)

Todd,JJ made a statement last week that Romo had an Emmitt Smith like performance last week. Do you agree or disagree with that statement? Personally, I feel that Kitna sparked the fire for the victory.

Todd Archer
  (1:08 PM)

A little bit of a spark, sure, but he had two picks in the quarter. He forced a throw deep to Witten and was late on a slant. I think the defense did a lot to spark that win too.

Ian (ATL, GA)

Should we expect a lot more production from the run game this week? I know the Jets and 49ers are pretty good against the run, and the Oline is less powerful than years past. The Redskins seem to be better as pass rushers. Is Garrett going to focus on the run this week to help protect Romo also?? Providing he plays.

Todd Archer
  (1:09 PM)

Ian, you make a good point. The first two opponents are really good - not just pretty good - against the run. The Niners haven't given up a 100-yard rusher in 20-plus games. The Redskins showed some vulnerability vs. the run last week, especially as the game wore on.

Juan (Austin, TX)

Can you tell me why the cowboys cut a healthy CB in McCann and picked up WR Robinson with a hammy injury? Arent they already thin at CB? The one getting cut should of been Allan Ball, He couldn't cover the slot receiver in #84 Morgan on sunday.I just dont understand this move.

Todd Archer
  (1:11 PM)

They needed a wide receiver more. Austin is out. Bryant is a question mark. McCann was benched, essentially for the San Fran game because Frank Walker served as the No. 3 corner. And as for Ball, once Rob Ryan changed the coverage in the second half, he was better. I like McCann but I don't think they have cut a guy who will be anything more than a serviceable backup in his career.

nate keyman (sioux falls)

if tony romo can't play & jon kitna stuggles in the game do you think jason garrett will bring in stephen mcgee in the game.

Todd Archer
  (1:12 PM)

No. Only if Kitna gets hurt. Garrett is patient with quarterbacks having played the position. If he believes Kitna is the best chance to win the game, he'll stick with Kitna. Now, I do see McGee being active this week for the first time because of Romo's injury.

Mike (NY)

If Buehler cannot be trusted to consistently generate touchbacks (mis-hits such as in SF), why in the world would they continue to waste not only a spot on the 53, but on the 46 man gameday roster on a 2nd kicker?

Todd Archer
  (1:13 PM)

Mike, you're right. If the people who are upset that McCann has been cut, then the anger should not be directed at the fact they re-signed Laurent Robinson but that they are keeping two kickers. I can only imagine Buehler is on a short-leash or Bailey's kickoffs just cannot cut it.

Joe Romotor (Houston)

Warren Sapp claimed Dez Bryant has been missing treatments and meetings, are these claims valid?

Todd Archer
  (1:14 PM)

He missed some last year after breaking his ankle. We haven't heard anything conclusive yet as to this year.

Nathan (Longview)

How quickly can WR Robinson learn the playbook and be effective? He and Romo will get little to no snaps this week, if Romo even plays. Or is Robinson's contributions more likely to occure later in the season when Dez gets hurt again?

Todd Archer
  (1:16 PM)

Here's what helps: Jason Garrett runs the same offense as Norv Turner in San Diego, so Robinson is immediately familiar with the scheme. The timing part will be a work in progress, you're right. But he has game experience and experience in the system.

Ronal Norwood (Corsicana, TX)

A former Mav's head coach subscribed to the "Wounded Tiger" theory, that if you are going against a team missing vital parts due to injury, you better watch out! Do you this playing out against the Redskins? Maybe the "D" can generate some turnovers, offering a short field to the Offense? (Sorry, but don't remember if the wounded tiger was Motta or Nelson)

Todd Archer
  (1:16 PM)

Not sure I'm buying that theory this week because I'll go with the It's a Rivalry/NFC East Game theory to trump it.

Jon (Fort Worth)

Do you think the Cowboys have any chance of winning this Monday night if Romo doesn't suit up?

Todd Archer
  (1:18 PM)

Absolutely. Kitna beat the Redskins last year with 305 yards passing and two touchdowns at Cowboys Stadium.

jw (nj)

I know im jumping the gun a little here, but you always need to think towards the future. What are the priorities for the 2012 draft for the Cowboys?

Todd Archer
  (1:19 PM)

Cornerback, defensive line, offensive line, tight end, quarterback. If there is a quarterback available to them early in the draft, I think they would look at it because this is Kitna's last year and McGee is entering the final year of his deal. Plus Romo will be 32 next year. It's time to think about it.

Todd(Pa) [via mobile]

Keep hearing rumors bout Dez missing treatments n meetings why haven't we heard more about this from you guys at ESPN Dallas. Is this the reason he still is considered highly questionable for Monday night?

Todd Archer
  (1:21 PM)

If you ask the question 20 times in a row, I guess I have to answer this one again. We haven't been told anything conclusively on that. Who's saying he's "highly" questionable for Monday? The team has said they are hopeful he can play.

mike (texas)

which wr will start for dallas monday night? holley or ogletree.

Todd Archer
  (1:22 PM)

It would be Ogletree.

Knish (NYC)

Does Felix play? How productive can he be w. separated shoulder?

Todd Archer
  (1:23 PM)

First, it's not a separated shoulder. It's a dislocated shoulder. They are expecting him to play but this is the type of injury that can happen over and over again. He will be in a harness for extra protection. How effective can he be? I can't put a percentage on it but I wouldn't put all of the mess of the running game on him either.

Dean Rosetti (Olyphant Pa)

I can see this game monday night being a classsic NFC East slugfest, like 16-13 either way. I dont think Washington can move the ball vs Dallas, but with all the injuries the Cowboys have how do they expect to move the ball against a very good Skins D. How will they gameplan??

Todd Archer
  (1:25 PM)

I agree with you on the old-fashioned NFC East game. I think I had 17-13, Cowboys. It won't be pretty, but I think you'll see Garrett try to attack the Redskins as he would if the team was 100 percent healthy. He won't get scared with his playcalling.

EGTuna (Sterling, VA)

Who has a better front7, Washington or SF?

Todd Archer
  (1:26 PM)

I would say San Francisco. Because the Niners have struggled we don't hear about their defense much. Patrick Willis is tremendous. So is Justin Smith. They are a rugged crew.

Kofi (Accra, Ghana)

What is the status on Bruce Carter injury? is he having full contact practice now...I know he cant play till week 6 but will sur like to know if he is on track to play on week 6

Todd Archer
  (1:27 PM)

I can't imagine he would come off the NFI list and play that first week. Too much to ask of a rookie. I think they'll work him back through a week or two of practice and have him be mostly a special teams' guy this year.

Dandy Don (Alpine, Texas)

I want to see Demarco Murray involved int he passing game. Any chance we may see this, starting this week, with Miles out and possibly Dez?

Todd Archer
  (1:29 PM)

I do. Murray did a nice job, in my untrained eyes, at San Fran. I think he offers a good mix with the backs. With Jones banged up, I think he gets more work and he can be effective in the passing game too. I'd like to see him in the screen game.

Big Rog Dog (Sin City)

Do you think that it was a mistake to cut 3 offensive lineman in the offseason. I understand the "youth movement" but injuries are a part of the game. Nagy seems to be in the same boat as Arkin as far as strength. They should have kept either Davis or Gurode as a backup.

Todd Archer
  (1:30 PM)

They couldn't keep those players as backups because of their cost and their pedigree. It wouldn't have worked unless both would have taken huge pay cuts. They never even offered them cuts in pay before letting them go.

Dean Rosetti (Olyphant Pa)

Im sure this is the question so many of us want to know....IS DEZ BRYANT MENTALLY TOUGH AND MATURE ENOUGH TO PLAY IN THE NFL!

Todd Archer
  (1:31 PM)

SINCE YOU WENT ALL CAPS ON ME ... SOMETIMES. That's the best I can do. I don't know if he has everything figured out just yet and I don't know if he will. He's incredibly talented but that only carries you so far.

Todd(Allentown Pa) [via mobile]

Call me crazy but seems the D has looked good and great at times is putting Newman in the starting lineup jeapordizing the chemistry n communication that has been going pretty well in Robs complicated defense will they slowly give him more playing time or full starter?

Todd Archer
  (1:32 PM)

I will duck for cover after typing this: Newman is their best corner. You play your best players.

Kevin Roman (Philly)

why in the world is jerry jones always answering questions about who is playing and who might not. it urks me. he is an OWNER its jason garrets team and hes the coach why doesnt jerry just name himself head coach

Todd Archer
  (1:33 PM)

He's also the general manager, so it's not entirely out of his perview. But I get what you're saying and I think the more the team wins the more Jerry will back off. Maybe not to the degree he did under Parcells but nudged that way.

aaron (tyler)

Why do people keep calling it a punctured lung? It is a COLLAPSED lung...meaning air is putting pressure on the lung keeping it from expanding fully. It does not have a hole in it.

Todd Archer
  (1:34 PM)

Umm, there is a hole.

Tedd (dc)

does sean lee have STAR potential as a LB i love what i seen from him first 2 games

Todd Archer
  (1:35 PM)

I got on our guy Tim MacMahon for saying Lee will be the best ILB Jerry Jones has had after the opener. For me, Dat Nguyen is that guy right now and Lee can close the gap certainly if he plays like this for the year. He has been tremendous so far.

Robert (Massachusetts)

Excellent chat. What do the Cowboys see in Alan Ball that they don't see in Bryan McCann, other than size?

Todd Archer
  (1:36 PM)

I think they believed McCann would guess. He'd make plays but he would give them up too.

Steve (Syracuse)

Todd, who was your favorite player that ever wore the star? And offensive player too? Has to be someone not on the roster.

Todd Archer
  (1:38 PM)

Never really had one growing up because I'm not from here. But from afar and being around here now it's hard not to be impressed with everything about Roger Staubach. To me, he is what a role model should be. Just reading about him, talking to him and others, the guy appears to be flawless. If you want, read The President's Team about the 1963 Navy football team. Terrific book about that team, JFK and Staubach.

mark (nowhere wyoming)

is there any chance miles austin plays monday?

Todd Archer
  (1:39 PM)

The team will keep the door open a crack, but I don't think there's a chance. I'll give it a 20 percent chance against Detroit, too. The next time he plays will be after the bye at New England on Oct. 16.

Dean Rosetti (Olyphant Pa)

Todd, when Ogletree was called for the facemask penalty i couldnt believe it....untill i saw the replay, what the hell was he thinking. I actual laughed when I saw it. What is your take on that..He also looks like he is over his head plaing on the big stage.

Todd Archer
  (1:40 PM)

Actually, I don't think the game is too big for him at all. He made a mistake and he'll pay for it too. He'll be fined for that penalty by the league. But I think Ogletree has a future if he works at it.

Shawn (NC)

Todd, thanks for the great communications today. I love your honesty & willingness to answer some tough questions.

Todd Archer
  (1:40 PM)

Thanks for that.

Matt (Indiana)

Todd, what are the Cowboys going to do about quarterbacks? Do you think they should either trade or pick up a free agent? Or just wait until the draft?

Todd Archer
  (1:41 PM)

Not sure where you're going here. They're not going to add one unless they lose one for the year. I think you'll see them look in the draft for a guy.

rich (alaska)

if our defense gets better as the year goes on and say we are a top 10 defense does rob ryan leave for a HC job and if so who could replace him?

Todd Archer
  (1:42 PM)

Now, this is just a guess so don't hold me to it but I think they would look at LBs coach Matt Eberflus. He's Ryan's righthand man and the players respect him a ton. That would give them continuity in the scheme.

Craig B (29 Palms Ca)

Good afternoon, Are the Cowboys happy with the play at the safety position? Not much being said on either one after two weeks of play.

Todd Archer
  (1:43 PM)

I think it's a wait and see on that because they have not faced a terrific passing team yet. Detroit will offer the big test in two weeks. I think Sensabaugh and Elam have been decent.

Jeff (Colorado)

Did the staff under estimate how long it would take for Bruce Carter to get back? Or was it a long term pick? It sure seems as if the #2 pick could have been used on a CB, OL or DL that would be playing now?

Todd Archer
  (1:44 PM)

No, they didn't. What set him back was the lockout. The training staff wasn't allowed to rehab him or work him out. That set him back. I've said this before, but Carter better be a player because you're right they had other needs to fill.

Marney (Corpus Christi, TX)

You think everyone (Romo, Austin, Bryant, Jones, Costa) will be fully healthy by the New England game? They'll all need their "A" games for that one.

Todd Archer
  (1:45 PM)

I'm not sure 100 percent healthy will be possible for a lot of guys on that list and even the guys not on that list. Healthy enough to bring their "A" game? Yeah.

Jeff (Odessa)

Go Rangers!!!! Do we still not know what Rob Ryan was upset at after the Jets loss???

Todd Archer
  (1:46 PM)

Didn't get a chance to ask him. He talks on Fridays (which could be Saturday this week) so I'll let you know.

Jimbo (encinitas)

todd, any chance to cowboys might be willing to look at Randy Moss for some WR help? not real comfortable after Miles and Dez

Todd Archer
  (1:46 PM)

Not seeing that happen at all. Moss has said he's done. And if someone asks about Terrell Owens, I'll just say this now: NO.

John C. (Tulsa)

Why is Dallas so successful in finding free agents who contribute to the team but fails too often to find contributors through the draft?

Todd Archer
  (1:48 PM)

Great question, John. The free agent guys are on the draft board, but I can't give you a good answer as to why. But kudos for the question.

Adam C (Charlotte, NC)

Can the Cowboys resign McCann to the practice squad?

Todd Archer
  (1:49 PM)

No. He's played in too many games.

Matt (Indiana)

How do you miss a field goal that close?

Todd Archer
  (1:50 PM)

I'm not making an excuse here, but here's what I think happened. The play clock was running down, the team was looking for the officia to re-set it and enver did. That rushed everybody and the timing was off. Still, even if the ball is flat on the ground you have to make that kick.

Trish (wisconsin )

Dockery or Nagy on Monday night?

Todd Archer
  (1:50 PM)

I think they'll stick with Dockery.

scott (new york)

if matt eberflus is robs right hand man well doesnt it make sense to follow him

Todd Archer
  (1:51 PM)

Why? He knows the system the best. He understands the players. Unless it is written into his contract, then he would not be eligible to leave unless the Cowboys gave him permission.

Dean Rosetti (Olyphant Pa)

On that play in overtime where Ratliff had the sack. Ware had an open shot on the Qb but noticed Gore leaking to the flat and he actually went with Gore.....that was more impressive than Ware getting the sack If he rushed, Smith Dumps it off for a big gain and changes the game. Does Ware watch that much film or our his instincs that good???

Todd Archer
  (1:52 PM)

Both. I was on the field for that play and saw the same thing. Terrific read by Ware.

BigTex (DC)

With McCann cut, does harris handle kickoff and punt duty now?

Todd Archer
  (1:53 PM)

Harris could do it. I think Murray might be the kick returner. You want a little more speed. But I'll say this: I think Harris breaks a punt return for a touchdown. He's tough for the first guy to bring down. He's shifty.

David (Fort Worth)

Todd, does Carson Palmer become a free agent if he sits the whole year. I'm thinking he could thrive in a Garrett offense.

Todd Archer
  (1:54 PM)

Nope, Bengals would continue to hold his rights.

Payton (NYC)

cowboys will BEAT the patriots i guarantee it. the patriots d is a joke and if we get scandrick back after the bye we will have a good d

Todd Archer
  (1:55 PM)

Already thinking Patriots? And somebody else asked about Suh and Detroit? Come on, people, has Jason Garrett taught you nothing? Be great today.

Todd(Allentown Pa) [via mobile]

Has Free regressed a lit or just a tough day at the office with a good football player in Justin Smith?

Todd Archer
  (1:55 PM)

Wouldn't say he regressed. Would say he had a rough game.

Jacob (Gulfport, MS)

Can Dez shoulder the load with Miles out?

Todd Archer
  (1:56 PM)

We'll see. He will get the chance but I still want Bryant to make the boring play with regularity. You see the greatness that cannot be coached but I want to see him be more precise with everything he does.

Dean Rosetti (Rosetti)

Man how Solid has Tyron Smith Looked so far? I mean he is only 20 year old. That is impressive.

Todd Archer
  (1:57 PM)

I can't believe he's 20 either. He plays much older and he acts much older. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself here, but I think he locks down that spot for the next decade.

Wayne (Denver)

Is it still a possibility that we trade Choice for a decent CB or WR?

Todd Archer
  (1:58 PM)

Let me ask it this way: what would a team give up for a running back that has never been the guy in the NFL and is in the last year of his contract? Youy're not going to get much in return. Sixth rounder at best.

jamal (iowa)

has newman shown any promise during his rehab sessions

Todd Archer
  (1:59 PM)

He looks like he's moving without any issues. Things are different on the field than in rehab sessions. I know he has felt like he could play the last two games but the team is being cautious. His history didn't help his cause. I think he'll be good to go for Sunday.

Matt (Indiana)

Do you love the Cowboys fans?

Todd Archer
  (2:00 PM)

I'll end it on this one. How can I not? Without you guys asking questions and reading our stuff, I don't have a job. Thanks for the questions everybody. If you have more, send me an e-mail or follow me on Twitter (@toddarcher).See ya next week.Courage
