Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all! It's Wednesday, so it's time for another fantasy sports chat session. I'm guessing football will trump baseball again today, so let's get those questions in and I'll do my best to answer as many as possible! Thanks for showing up and let's have some fun! Here we go...

Kerry (Seattle)

Foster owner - just traded Shonn Greene for Tate. How'd I do?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Love it! I know I shouldn't give up on players so soon, but Greene has not impressed at all. His January playoff stats don't help us. I think Tate is legit, and Foster misses at least one week.

steve (los angeles)

what do you expect from thomas jones going forward (if there is such a thing)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

He gets a bad rap; Jones rushed for nearly 900 yards and scored 6 times and wasn't the starter last year. I'm not saying he's a top 20 RB, but he's worth owning. I could see close to 1,000 yards just because he'll get so many chances.

Chad (Chicago, IL)

Eric, you have the best advice! Glad to be an Insider!! I'm weak at WR - Colston and Amendola both hurt, but strong at RB. I was offered S. Smith (CAR) for FJax in a straight up trade. Take the deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

You're very kind. Thanks. I think Jackson is a better fantasy option in a vaccuum, but if the WR is what you need, this is ok. Just be wary; this week, for example, I don't expect the Jags to do much in Carolina, so why would Newton throw for 400 yards, or Smith get 150?

Jerry (TX)

Drafted Pettigrew and Gresham. D Clark is available on waivers. Worth giving up a high waiver claim for him? If so, which one would you drop?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

We shouldn't totally ignore Dallas Clark; he got plenty of targets in Week 2 and Collins will have some decent games. But is Clark that much better than Pettigrew or Gresham? Probably not. I'd keep the waiver spot.

banks (miami)

keller or vernon davis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Don't laugh, this is a question worth asking. This week I had Keller ranked better. For the season it's still Davis for me, but he's slipping because the Harbaugh-led offense just isn't looking his way.

Please help already 0-2!!!!!In need of serious help at the wide reciever spot in a ppr....wr 3 would your drop edwards and mikw illiams (TB) for nelson and nate washington?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I would not drop Mike Williams of Tampa. No way. Edwards I could cut for either of those guys. But Freeman and Williams will produce.

Josh (NW)

Helu worth a roster spot? Considering dropping LT for him. My other RBs are Mendy, Benson and D. Thomas.

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I like Helu, but Tomlinson is going to matter, too. Helu is the upside play, though, and if he's available, and seeing what you've got it makes sense.

Larry (Texas)

Just got a trade offer of V-Jax for Steve Smith. How long can Newton hold this pace being a rookie? Rivers has been up and down himself! Which receiver do you think has more upside for the rest of the year? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Vincent Jackson is better. And that's not any anti-Carolina talk. Jackson is a top-5 guy the way he's playing, perhaps No. 1.

Tim Hightower (Washington)

Should I really be a trade high guy? Sure Roy Helu looked good but I still had 20+touches

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

People think I just don't like Hightower, but you know how many times in the past he did well in Arizona and coughed up playing time? He's playing well, and Shanahan knows better. Helu is the upside play. It's not me talking, but within 3 weeks, Helu is the guy in D.C.

Ghost (ATL)

EK, talk to me: assuming Knowshon shakes the hammy issue, what can I expect this year? Elway predicted a break out year - John can't be wrong, can he?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I don't see a breakout year coming, but maybe the Broncos are trying to convince themselves. When healthy Moreno will play, but he doesn't excite. McGahee is a decent option this week.

Yogi Bear (Stealing your picnic basket)

someone just told me that would trade me Chris Johnson for Meachem and Hightower... Do you take it

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Oh my, yes. A thousand times yes. CJ is going to start playing well this week. And Hightower is an obvious sell-high guy. He always was.

Javier (Lodi (CA))

James Starks is available. Should I drop Knowshon Moreno for him? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Yeah, I would. That speaks volumes for our expectations about Moreno.

Kelly (Chicago)

Hey, Eric. You are the man. DO you think SJax will play? If he does, is he worth starting over SGreene this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Yes and yes. I think he plays, since he was so close to playing in Week 2. And I have little confidence in Greene.

KC and no sunshine (KC)

Dwayne Bowe buy low or buyer beware

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

The way Cassel looks, can't possibly be a buy low. Expect the occasional big game, but not enough to be a stud this season. It's a shame, actually.

Josh (LA)

Would you drop Gates after that terrible performance? (that was a joke). Wayne and Moreno for Matt Forte?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Interesting offer. Certainly Forte is the prize of the deal, but it's expensive. Wayne should be a top 20 WR, at the least. If you have WR depth, sure.

Luke (Madison)

Is Eric Decker a legit WR3?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Yeah, I think so, even if Lloyd plays this week. Look, I know I'm alone in my Orton praise, but the stats have been there. He'll throw a ton.

Sara (ATL)

With Austin out, would you rather have Decker or Mike Williams from TB?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

It's still Williams. Our rankings are up and they are free, and very interesting! I think people are a bit too worried about the TB offense. It's still young and will be productive.

John (Toledo)

Jamaal Charles owner here. My remaining RB's are: F. Jones, Greene, McGahee, and Jacobs. I have Stafford and Ryan at QB, so I'm thinking of trading Stafford and McGahee (to the Mareno owner)in return for Forte and Flacco. Good move?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Yeah, that makes sense. I think Stafford is better than Ryan, but the difference in getting Forte over McGahee, that's nice.

JoeC (Illinois)

Felix Jones has got me worried, tell me his low numbers are more due to the stifling defenses the Cowboys have been playing.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I'm not too worried about him. He's going to be productive and it's a very good offense. And we should be happy he's playing.

Ghost (ATL)

Decker, Dexter M, or Denario A: best upside?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Well, McCluster could, in theory, be the KC main running back. I doubt they do it, though. But any RB that gets touches can do more things than a WR dependent on passes. Decker is good. McCluster's usage has yet to be determined.

Kevin (CA)

Since Felix is still hurt and the Cowboys don't play till Monday, is Eric Decker a safer flex play this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

The fact they don't play until Monday is a good thing. One extra day. I haven't done the flex rankings yet but based on where these guys were in my position ranks, Felix will rank better in flex.

Honeymoon Blues (Aruba)

EK, I return from paradise to find my partner "DROPPED" Daniel Thomas outright. Am I over-reacting to this? I anticipated Thomas to be the top rookie RB this year.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Yeah, but what does being the top rookie RB really mean? I don't think he should have cut him, but I also don't think Thomas is going to be a sure top 20 RB.

John (Cincy)

Should I be scared of the Miles Austin injury? Try to sell him high to someone thinking he'll only be out for a week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Well, it's never wise to lie to a potential trade partner, even if it gets you the trade. I never do that. That always comes back to haunt later. Even being out three games, Austin is still a terrific player. Hard to sell high when that info is out there for everyone.

John (STL)

What do you think of Dexter? More of a stash on the bench or not even worth it?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I think he's worth adding, because the upside is potentially large. I wouldn't use him this week though.

Mike (Canada)

How many touches does Ben Tate get this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

More than 20. He's worth using. Frankly, he could be what Foster was last year.

Todd(Pa) [via mobile]

With Romo a question mark n playing on monday do I start Newton this week in case they rest him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I ranked Newton better, so yeah, I'm ok with that. But I do think Romo will play. It's a Monday night game. Don't think that doesn't matter to Jerry Jones.

David (Paris, FR)

I think what everyone is missing on D McCluster is the fact that he is listed as a WR and is actually a RB. This lets you start 4 RB's. With the added touches....Would his value not be equal to or greater than a WR 2?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

In theory, but only if he puts up numbers. The dual elig thing was great for Danny Woodhead, but he still wasn't producing big stats. Worthy of flex last season, sure.

2-0 (everywhere)

maybe thats why DESPERATE!!!!! (NJ) os 0-2, because he ponders dropping mike williams for nate washington

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Let's not be mean. Sometimes these odd free agent moves work out great. I don't think dropping the good Mike Williams is wise, however.

Percy Harvin (MN)

Am I overrated or the product of a bad QB? Will I ever show up besides on returns?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Throw out Week 1. Harvin was fine in Week 2. McNabb doesn't have to be great for Harvin to be a usable wide receiver in the 20-25 range.

There is no way ryan fitzpatrick keeps this pace, but do you think he can be consistently good.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I'm skeptical he plays well enough to be a starter all season long. Use him in nice matchups - and the Pats are a nice matchup in a shootout - but we saw Fitz do well last year and then by Thanksgiving that ended.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Dropped Montario Hardesty because i needed Wr depth..but will I regret this at some point? I can't see Hillis staying healthy...

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Why would Hillis be an obvious injury candidate? I do think Hardesty will matter more in the second half, but Hillis has become a bit underrated.

Cam-o-lot (NC)

Starting Cam over Stafford and Ryan this week ! Crazy or Payoff?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

It's your team! I like Stafford a bit more this week. And it's tough to call anyone crazy for a decision.

Mark (charlotte)

Former J. Charles owner. Would you rather have D. Carter or Addai?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Carter is the upside play, but the Colts still don't know what they've got with him. I think Addai is relatively safe, though. He'll catch the ball.

Emilio (Miami)

With Miles Austin Ogletree worth starting in a ppr league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

If Bryant sits this week as well as Austin then I could see it.

Doug (Tampa)

With the year Gore is off too... I was offered Gates for Gore. Am I crazy to consider this trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

No, not crazy. Depends what you've got at tight end already, though. Is it a major upgrade? I think Gore and Gates will both be fine, incidentally. But I'll take the top 20 RB every time.

Jeff (Portland, ME)

You know, I've been thinking about your Fitzpatrick comment. How he started off strong and then dwindle after Thanksgiving. Isn't there room for improvement? With a full year under his belt, he now has better knowledge for the game. While he may be the Dan Haren of football, we still draft and start him. And with a 7/1 TD to INT ratio, he is worthy of a utilizing as a starter until he shows me a decline. Wouldn't you agree?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I think it's reasonable to think Fitzpatrick might not slow down like he did last season, but he's not a strong armed QB. Weather can affect guys like that. But yes, we could be underrating him some. I just don't think he's top 10 yet. It's 2 games.

Mike Tolbert (THAT good?)

You seem higher on me than some of your colleagues. Can you explain?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

As my editor keeps reminding me, I cannot possibly speak about what my colleagues are thinking, but I see a guy getting used a lot as a receiver, a big guy that could score 10 touchdowns, and he should be consistent.

Bobby (CA)

Who do you think will produce better numbers for the rest of the year Beanie or Gore?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I think it's still Gore, but obviously he hasn't played great, and Wells has been better.

Brian (Seattle)

Jamaal Charles owner here. I drafted Brady second round, do I trade the Golden Boy to replace Charles' production or hope Brady continues to play as well as he has so far and carry my team?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Depends what you can get. Where you drafted Brady is irrelevant. Hopefully you have other RBs. But there are many ways to build a team. Charles owners aren't done yet, but they need to work a bit harder.

Steve (IL)

EK, would you rather own both sides of the Starks/Grant platoon, or would you drop Grant to take a shot on an upside play like Helu?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I'd go wiht Helu, personally. I don't see things getting better for Grant unless Starks gets hurt, and there's no reason to believe that is a lock. The Packers seem clear in their RB intentions here. The Redskins are a changing theirs, however.

Tommy (Work)

You a Denarious Moore believer? Like him more than Julio Jones??

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

I am a believer, but not more than Jones. But it would be nice to see a consistent Raiders wide receiver again. It's been a while.

Chris (Miami)

Any chance marshawn lynch has a good game this sunday or is that offense doomed to fail?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Always a chance but let's just say I wouldn't activate any Seahawks this week. They did play Pittsburgh in Week 2, after all. There's some hope in the easier matchups.

Shane (Queen Creek, AZ)

Thoughts on AJ Green? Is he a top 10-15 WR by midseason?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I like him, but I think that's somewhat optimistic. Dalton is already playing well but it's clear Benson and Simpson are factors as well.

Marcus (Seattle)

Is Peyton worth keeping in a bench spot? 10 team league...

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I think it's unlikely Manning plays again this season, but the worst case scenario is you drop him, you make the playoffs and then the other team uses Manning to beat you in Week 16.

Jason (Bmore)

Do you think Hernandez's absence helps or hurts Gronkowski? Seems as everyone thinks it will help, but I think the additional attention will hurt things.

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I don't think it affects it much. Should still see many targets. Too many Patriots running around to double everyone.

Perry (Boston)

James Starks or A.J. Green for the rest of the season? And Marques Colston or Felix Jones for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Starks over Green... and Jones over Colston. I'm a RB guy. And I don't think those WRs are top 20. Neither are the RBs, but each has upside.

Steve (Beantown)

Who is the more productive end of the year waiver pick-up...Thomas Jones or Daniel Thomas ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I think Thomas was drafted in all leagues and remains owned. Jones was drafted, too, then dropped, now added again. I think Thomas will be better, but for those that think Jones won't matter, I don't agree.

Brian (Seattle)

How do you like Ryan Mathews long term? Could he potentially take the starting job away from Tolbert?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Both are productive, and I doubt the Chargers want to adjust things. They want 2 guys staying healthy rather than relying on one to do it all.

Emilio (San Diego)

Should I drop JStew for Helu?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

No, I wouldn't go that far. Stewart had 100 receiving yards last week, he will matter.

Eric (Denver)

What's a reasonable offer to make for Chris Johnson? I'm hoping his owner is panicked.

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

No idea what someone might do. I'd think a decent WR and third-tier RB would interest some, but I wouldn't do it.

Layne (Denver)

Would you drop Ochocinco for Burleson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Yeah, that seems reasonable to me. I've been sticking by Chad, but Burleson is better and the Lions are for real.

Eric (GB)

Arian Foster and Ben Tate.... the resurrection of the LJ, Priest Holmes Timeshare!!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Well, it's certainly possible. Foster's injury allowed this to happen.

Jake (Charlotte, NC)

Nate Washington Q: Why are people not higher on him this week as a waiver wire add? He has proven speed, nearly topped 100 yards last week, is facing a depleted Den secondary, and the Titans passing offense is looking better than expected. Your thoughts on Washington this week and future?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Well, I think we've seen Washington in the past, and he's been inconsistent. Yes, he is off to a good start. Add him, but I can't make him a top 30 WR.

Lee (ABQ)

Are you playing DeAngelo this weekend or waiting till he has a good game?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

He's not in my top 20 this week, but I wouldn't drop him. I think he will have a better game this week.

Nick (Chicago)

Britt and Reggie Bush for Mathews and Benson fair?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Britt is probably the best player in that deal, but this is fair. Two RBs for one starting (and maybe top 10) WR.

David (NC)

Is Nicks and JStew to much for Chris Johnson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

No, that sounds about right.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

OK, thanks to all for the great questions. Hope you enjoyed it and I appreciate you showing up. Best of luck in Week 3 and beyond!
