In your opinion how good is Class of 2014 i.e. Cannon, Watkins, Scott, Brown etc.? Is Texas a favorite with a lot of those top recruits?
Well it just got a ton better with Heard joining the class. Heard is a very polished and smart player. I know he is not huge at 6-2, 190. But he is the QB that Bryan Harsin wanted and for Texas to lock him up this early is very big. Now Texas needs to get some DBs.
What's the latest on Cole Luke? I think this guy is a real sleeper. Is he going to visit? Does he know when he will commit? Any info would be appreciated
He is not a sleeper. Everybody knows about him. The good thing is that SC is out of the picture now. Texas is going to have to fight off the Arizona schools. But they do have a chance to get him.
Suggestion: Do a roundtable and give the main players some nicknames. I know it's gone out of fashion but I still like the idea. Just a fun concept I thought I'd throw out there.P.S. Thanks for feeding my obsession
We have done just that over on the forum. Check it out under the nickname thread. Thanks for the suggestion.
Does the Texas Longhorns football program have a leg-thigh developement regiment to built better break-away speed and power with their running backs? This would create Earle Campbell-type players, hard to bring down, with speed to break-away. Joe Muniz
I like that idea. They do not have something specific for that but they do some speed training drills. The big thing for the RBs is to stretch and eat healthy this year. I talked to both of them this week and they said they have taken much better care of their bodies this year than last.
Why does Texas continue to try and obtain multiple Quarterbacks every year?
The goal is to sign the best quarterback they can every year. Now that might cause some backlog like with Brewer, Overstreet, Ash, Swoopes and Heard. But Texas wants three QBs on the roster and one redshirted at all times.
I have followed UT commit Marcus Johnson at Clear Springs. What is your opinion of his potential at UT
Very versatile player. He is going to get in the game early and could also be used as a return guy. I like Kendall Sanders better because he has longer arms but I think Johnson helps this year.
Do you think Jalen Overstreet chance has to play this year if so is it QB or Wildcat.
Ideally he redshirts and Brewer is the first guy to come off the bench if Texas needs to replace Ash or McCoy.
As Horns Nation knows, we have produced some incredible talent at safety in the Mack Brown era. Some always fall short and injuries happen as well. But, with our track record and Mack's unbelievable ability to make you "man crush" the guy when he smiles at you. Why doesn't Texas have a sure bet TE committed yet? Is someone on the roster expected to make strides this spring or is this just a year we may fall short on the TE and Receiver spot.Obviously all commits aren't in yet but Texas can only offer so many kids.Personally my needs/wants rate 1)DGB 2)Daje 3)TEDo you agree?
Well the issue is more of the style of tight end Texas has recruited. Texas was running the spread offense. Grant is great for the spread. He can catch the ball and has speed. Now he was injured but still he is a good spread tight end.Texas switched to less of a spread and has yet to stockpile the type of talent it now needs to accommodate that switch.
Carter, what are the chances of Jalen Overstreet seeing the QB spot next year, and as for Gray will he be ahead of Malcolm and Joe in the lineup? or will we be splitting carries like usual on the rb game? and if Ash turns out to be a bust and we redshirt Brewer who will play QB?
Jalen is headed for a redshirt. He is just not ready and they like his potential as a passer down the line.
Carter, Whitewright is just down the road from me and I just don't understand how Tyrone Swoopes can be so highly touted. Yes, he is a beast on the field, but then consider his competition as he plays in 2A (and the fact the other local 2A schools are pretty bad). Usually these things play a factor in recruiting. Colt McCoy came from a 2A school and did just fine, but he had a year to sit first. Would you agree that Swoopes needs to sit a year, wherever he chooses to go?
Well I can tell you why he is so highly touted. He is 6-5, 229 and can run like the wind. The throwing motion is not great. But that can be taught. He has what cannot be taught - size and talent.
WITH THREE OF THE BEST RUNNING BACKS IN THE COUNTRY. WHY DOESN'T TEXAS RUN THE WISHBONE FORMATION OFFENSE?
First off, ease up on the all caps key. We hear you. Secondly, it is too tough to pass effectively out o that formation. And football has become a game where you have to pass the ball at least some to be effective. Also they would need a great runner at QB too. Ash is good but not great.
Is it safe to say that this is the most talented team Mack has had top to bottom?
I'm not sure if it is his most talented. He had some very good talent six, seven and eight years ago. But looking at it right now among the top 22 players I think Texas has 11 or 12 NFL guys. My breakdown on that is three DBs, two LBs, four DLs, two OLs and at least one running back.
I have seen or heard in the last two years Texas recruiting from Colorado. In the past there was always some type of interest in high school players out of Colorado. Not seeing any recruiting out of New Mexico, Arkansas. There seems to me (personal) view, there is alot of talent in these states and here lately Texas is not tapping in, now that many kids in Texas are looking at teams in the SEC or PAC 12 and not even thinking TEXAS or A&M anymore ?
Michael Dyer was from Arkansas. So too was Darren McFadden. There is no doubt Arkansas has some serious talent. But Texas does not have the connection there that it has in other places. The first place Teas needs to look for recruits is Texas. Then it has to zero in on two or three prospects nationally that can help fill out the class. Lately those guys have been from Florida (Harris), Arizona (Luke, Brewer), Louisiana (Davis) and Missouri (DGB). There are a few more out there but by and large Texas stays within Texas.
