Let's Get It Started In Here!
Matt, whats up with Vick being such a crybaby? Last thing a fan wants to hear is whining. Name me one game after the Bears game last year that he has actually played well.
Maybe he should throw the ball away from time to time. Maybe his OL should block better. Maybe he shouldn't blame the refs. I hear ya Brother
Is there any defense players this year that have been suprising? Under the radar type guys.
A lot-of course, but two youngsters who really stand out to me are Navarro Bowman in SF and Sean Lee in Dallas. Both are making tons of plays. Cover a lot of ground. Every down type up-and-coming ILBs
I am a die hard Steelers fan. I am very worried with inability to run, pass block, and even the Defense does not seem to pass the eye test compared to last year. Can you put my fears to rest?
Is there any other kind of Steelers Fan? The OL stinks-maybe the worst in the NFL...but they don't play Freeney & Mathis in a dome every week either. I do give the Colts Run D some credit though-it is clearly improved. PGH is still a good team-no doubt, but I cant' say these three games are wonderful indicators as to where they are. This upcoming week will be.
Marcell Dareus needs more love in your rookie watch. It's not his job to get after the QB like Philip Taylor, it's his job to stop the run. And the Bills Run D is giving up 60 less yards per game than last season. Unless you think Nick Barnett is a superhero, Dareus' contributions are criminally underrated.
You might be right. He is awesome. The problem with the Rookie Watch is that there are a LOT of deserving guys. And-if you follow me at all-I have been praising Dareus for Buff ever since he was drafted-huge fan of his here. But who do you take off the list? There in lies my problem. But I will also bet that Dareus spends a ton of time on that list this year.
Matt, can you give some thoughts on the state of the o-line around the league? Seems like a lack of talent to fill 5 starters on 32 teams. Do you see a combination of causes? Highschool / College not teaching the position well? Talent playing elsewhere: along d-line, are remaining at TE? Thanks for your insight.
Have been saying this a lot lately-esp on Twitter (@Williamson NFL by the way). Even put out: Which is the best OL in the NFL? The answer is really "None"...and there are some awful OLs right now. Def OL shortage. I think a big reason is all the spread in college. Few OLinemen come into the league as NFL-ready as they used to. And with all the free agency movement (continuity is key on the OL), youngsters need to play...but they are not ready. Plus, the lockout makes this even worse. And-the D deserves credit here too. They are getting paid to do a job as well, right? But the D players are so incredibly talented and athletic right now...making the slower OL guys look even worse.
The Bears OLine will give your Steelers OLine a run for their money. Martz can't seemingly come back after this season to run our offense again can he? That would be another O-Coordinator for Cutler and the Bears to learn from. That can't be good with all those changes for a team, can it?
SF and Minny and a few others are up for that "Honor" as well. Never felt that Martz was a good fit in Chicago with their weather/surface/Cutler.
Hi Matt,Huge respect for your insights! I have been a Raider fan my whole life and I am getting very gitty when I see this team play. Whats your current take on Darren McFadden and his play so far this year? Does he have the look of THE RB in this league, even if he's not quite there? Also, D. Moore sure is exciting, 5th round steal??
Moore is fantastic. Will be an excellent all around WR. Really like him. McF is also really hard to ignore. Fits their system really well. He isn't really a jitterbug at all and isn't real elusive, but when I think of McF, I think of this simple equation: F=MC2. McF has a lot of MASS. Big RB. But he has a ton of ACCELERATION. That ends up equaling an awful lot of FORCE. No more science today my students.
Thoughts on Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.....seems to be a really solid young safety tandem in Seattle.
Absolutely. Very different though. Chancellor is really just a small LB...but also a very good all around playmaker. Thomas is more in the Ed Reed FS mold. Covers a ton of ground. Complement each other really well.
Matt, is it just coincidence that both the Texans and Redskins are struggling in the redzone and have basically the same offensive philosophy?
Hadn't thought of that. But when you look at red zone struggles, it often goes to the QB for me. Everything tightens up so much and happens faster. Can your QB make strong throws in smaller holes and process information even faster? That could be a big part of the problem with both these teams. But will consider the Shanny/Kubiak correlation...interesting
So much for the Eagles being an NFL dream team? Do the Eagles start to fix their problems or are their problems going to be tough to fix?
Will get better. A LOT of change from a year ago. That has to be tough-esp considering the lockout. But Vick is still mistake prone and injury prone. The right side of the OL is under-manned, although Watkins could get in there and help down the road. But the interior of that is what scares me. LBs and Safeties....and I don't see that changing. Philly's D will be great if they are playing with the lead. Otherwise...who knows
Is it time for the Browns to cut Robiskie?
Seems a little harsh. Who are they going to add that is a major upgrade? To me, he is a #4 WR-and could be fine in that role.
Why does it make me cool to get my question posted on one of your chats?
I am not sure that it does Spence...but good to have you on board anyways
Is it just me or does Dexter McCluster look pretty good? He's not Jamaal Charles, but he looks like he can serve as one of the Chief's few weapons this year.
No question. Electric. Versatile. Wonder how well his body will hold up with the added workload, but really like the player.
any reason that the steelers don't roll out 7 away from the pass rush? he throws better on the run anyway, and it will help save his life.
Good point. They also didn't do a very good/consistent job of helping their poor OTs against great pass rushers on Sunday Night...baffling.
I play hoops every Tues and Thurs night. If I had to guard a dude who plays at Pitt, don't you think it would be wise for my teammates to help me out with this project? Same situation for Steelers. I am J Scott in this scenario.
What are we listening to today?
I have the entire MCW playlist on shuffle. Just got a live version of "Yesterday" from Paul. And "Dazed and Confused" just followed it from the BBC Sessions. But we have a little of everything on this playlist-much of it recommended from you guys.
Could Oakland get involved in some sort of deal to get Aaron Curry from the Seahawks? They have OLB depth issues and he is young and talented maybe a 2013 draft pick for him or something? Put that idea in Al's ear please.
Was asked about Curry to Philly too on Twitter. I think a change of scenery would do this youngster a lot of good. Oak? I have no problem with that. Surround him with high end Front 7 talent (although SEA is not short in this department).
I have the same gut as haynesworth. My back doesn't hurt. Whats wrong with him
Do you take on rough double teams?...actually, don't answer that
If that Jet's cant run (which they cant) and they have to rely on Sanchez to win (which they do) and their defense has lost some of its intimidation (which it has), how much trouble are they in for the rest of the year?
Well said. A fair amount of trouble!
How much longer is Bill Bellichick willing to keep trying out this 4-3 defensive experiment? It doesn't seem to be working
Pretty sure they are ranked #32 in the NFL in D right now. Not sure I would blame the scheme change entirely. But changes certainly do need to be made. Added a lot of quality guys this off season...but it isn't paying off.
Do you think that this will finally be the year that the Oilers find a replacement for Warren Moon?
Who do you think will win the Minnesota - KC clash of the titans this weekend?
Was just on KC radio talking about it and I also wrote that game up for Scouts Inc. But I don't have a great feeling about either team now. Give me Minny..but barely
what role does JPP play once osi returns? giants Dline is stacked.
It is stacked. JPP needs snaps. I actually think he is the better player than Osi right now. A DL rotation is an excellent thing to have though. And on throwing downs, Osi and JPP at DE with Tuck moved inside.
Hi Matt, What do you make of Devin Mccourty's early season struggles. Seems like he is always in position but not making plays on the ball?
Noticed that during the preseason too. Teams are not afraid of him. Instead they are challenging him. Odd for sure, esp after how he played last year.
What is up with the Titans? They looked set with CJ and Britt with Locker in the wings. Now Britt is out, CJ doesn't seem confident and that O-line stinks.
All of that is true Hedley. Hass has FAR exceeded my expectations though. Playing really well. Cook is the guy who really needs to step up now in Britt's absence...well Johnson too. But that Britt injury will be tough to overcome-pretty special player. Tell Mongo that I said Hello.
I went into the season thinking that there was no way the Eagles wouldn't come out on top of their division. Now I'm thinking that there is no way they don't come out on the bottom. Am I way off base?
Only 3 games in. I picked the Eagles too. I am not as down on them as you are apparently. A lot of room for improvement. Still a roster loaded with extreme star power. Watch out for Perry the Platypus.
MW, just wanted to ask about last week's write up on NYJ-OAK where you had the final 10-9...where did all the offense come from in that game?
Pretty shocking. I at least got the winning team right though! McF and the Raiders running game was just superb. Sanchez made a few plays. Both Ds let down.
Nnamdi=NFL's most overrated player.
Can see why you say that. Teams throw at him now. But I also think that PHIL needs to pretty much have him play man coverage like he did in OAK. Why pay him a ton and then ask him to change what he does?
deangelo hall = NFL's most overrated player.
Hall doesn't cover or tackle. Other than that, he is great.
Is Patrick Chung the next Elite Saftey?
Elite is a big word, but I see a Pro Bowl or two in his future.
Is there a Patrick Willis "effect" for whomever plays right next to him?
Probably, but both Spikes and Bowman are very good players. Just watching Bowman, I am all in on this kid.
Lost in the Loss to the Cowboysm was Trent "Silverback" Williams coming out party. He had a game against Ware!
Yeah, we talked about that a ton during Cover it Live-which you all should be checking out btw. Williams has taken a big step forward in Year 2. Very promising. Ware beat him a few times, but that isn't anything to be ashamed of.
Are you still high on Julio Jones? He hasn't looked the part of a game-changer quite yet.
This was his best game, but you are right. Not a crisp precise route runner yet. I am still high on him long term though. ATL's OL must protect much better in order to get JJ downfield.
Pats bounce back in Oakland this week? Our run defense has been pretty good, 10th overall. Optimistic?
I do think NEng bounces back. Not a knock on the Raiders, but just don't think that Campbell can keep up with Brady on the scoreboard-and I do know that OAK has put up a lot of points.
Did Joe Addai prove Sunday night prove that if you give him average blocking he can be an effective NFL back?
Sure, but there are a lot of RBs that you can say that about. The beauty of Addai is still his protection and help in the passing game, which of course is a lot more valuable with 18 behind center.
Ummm, the Pat's run defense is 10th overall because there's no reason to run on them because they are so bad against the pass. FJax averaged 7+ YPC on Sunday.
Matt, did big ben fall out of your elite QB category (brees, #18, brady, arod, rivers)? he seems to have a lot of the warts vick does, hold the ball way too long. etc. there is only so much u can blame on scott.
Not at all. He has always held the ball a long time and will always take a lot of sacks. But Roethlisberger is a WAY better decision maker than Vick.
Belichek's record after coming off a loss is sick, but don't you think OAK can get to Brady with their front 7? Not that this is any enlightening comment, but if they can get to Brady & limit Welker, the Raiders should have a real shot. Thoughts?
Sure. I don't expect the Pats to steam roll the Raiders. Just don't see them losing two in a row. Very high on OAK's DL too.
Do you think Jared Cook gets more invovled now that Britt is hurt? He could be really really good.
No choice-has to
Do the Eagles need to center their offense around Lesean McCoy more? seems like every time he touches the ball he makes things happen
He is amazing. Yes. I do think that would be smart. One of the top few RBs in football now.
"Dazed and Confused" finally ended...."Heat of the Moment" Asia...old school
Is Stafford the absolute key for the Lions, and what is his long term potential ?
His short and long term potential is being one of the very few best football players on the planet. Yeah, he is that special.
Does Ochocinco bounce back this week against a weak Oakland secondary?
I doubt it. Terrible fit from the start in NEng. Not a precise route runner. Free lancer. Bet Tom can't stand that.
Gronkowski in the Probowl this year?
Oh yeah. No question.
Is the most surprising thing about the Bills their O-Line? It looked like it was going to be so bad, and yet they look top tier in the first 3 weeks.
For sure. I think Gailey and his spread has a lot to do with that, but the OL has FAR exceeded my expectations. No question.
Thoughts on the NFL Films Documentary on Bill Belichick?
Fantastic stuff. Really enjoyed it and I recommend it to everyone.
Do the Panthers have it in them to win 8 games this year?
Seems unlikey in that division. Still-progress has been made for sure. They have found a QB which of course is incredibly important.
Follow up on Ochocinco. Should they waive him and sign Moss? Would it even make a difference?
Well, with Moss, it all comes down to if he can take the top off a D still or not. If he can fly down the sidelines and make opposing Ds fear that big play ability, then he is valuable. If not, he isn't. And I don't have that answer as it stands today.
Do you think if the Phins dont improve soon they will make a coaching change mid-season?
I would say so. Losing all those home games is just awful.
What are ur thoughts on Brandon Lloyd this week, does he finally blow up?
How healthy is he? Orton isn't playing all that well either.
Hey is Fitzpatrick for real, or do you think he will cool off over the next few weeks?
I do. Streakly player overall. On a super hot streak right now though. I expect it to end.
What's affecting Clay Matthews more? Gameplanning against him or a lack of a good pass rush complement?
Those two things go hand in hand. Without anyone else to fear, it becomes too easy to focus on the one threat.
How does the banged up Dallas offense fare against the stout Det Defense this week? Thanks
I don't think it fares well-esp against that DL. And I don't think Dallas' secondary fares well either.
Everyone forgot Steve Smith is still a TRUE #1 receiver...
They sure did. Legit. But he did fight some injuries and had some of the worst QB play in recent memory. Awfully tough to get an accurate scouting report on a player like that-esp when every D is keying on him so much.
Thoughts on the Giants? Can they overcome all the injuries and compete this year?
Oh I think they will compete...for the division, not a Super Bowl. Eli played a heck of a game-very encouraging.
Hines Ward 4th best WR in Pittsburgh?
Probably, but still quite valuable. Reliable and tough of course. Gets the first down when you need it most.
Thoughts on Titus Young? He's made some huge catches the last couple weeks
He has. Wonder if he will cut into Burleson's targets. Dangerous player. Many compare Young to D-Jax, and I can see that, but certainly not as dynamic.
"Nothing But A Good Time? Poison...
Are we all jumping the gun on teams right now,did anybody see Greenbay winning it all last year even after week 10 let alone after week 3?
Of course we are jumping the gun Igor. SO many big injuries will occur. Very fluid league. But we can only react to what has been exposed to us at this point
I-Gor or E-Gor btw?
How much should I worry that Washington coming off a short week and an emotional loss will be flat this week and let one slip away against a desperate St Louis team?
Certainly could happen. Can't believe that STL is playing THIS bad myself. Injuries have been a factor for sure, but I am betting that Spags gets that turned around.
Jackson Browne "Somebody's Baby" now...reminds me of Fast Times
Definately I-gor and my hump moves from side to side.
Figured. Good. Very good.
As long as Romo is behind center, am I foolish to think the Cowboys will beat the Lions this week? He seems to finally be carrying this team.
Romo has been fantastic the past two weeks-esp vs. Wash. I am taking DET-really bad matchup for Dallas, but Romo/Witten/Ware took over last week-they could certainly do it again.
Jets are paying Santonio Holmes the #1 wide receiver money but they keep throwing it to Plaxico Burress. Why?
Well, I don't think Holmes was close to 100% last week. And he prob got injured in the game before. His time will come. Such a difficult cover. Plus, every team will try to take him away.
ROMO only considered a top QB because he is on such a high profile team? If Hasselbeck was QB for DAL, he'd be ROMO, etc. Hyped but mediocre.
Wrong. I actually think Romo is underrated anymore. Guy is a heck of a player.
Joe Haden a top 5 corner? He's been unbelieveable this year and only TD catch by a receiver given up by the Browns was that quick snap that caught the defense off guard.
Knocking on that door. VERY few I would put over Haden. Love him. GREAT player.
Hope I'm not too late Matt, but who do you lay the most blame on for the Vikings second half collapses? or is it collapsi?
Hard to pin it on any one thing, but they for some reason drift away from Peterson...why? And in nature, their O has VERY little room for error. Poor OL. Poor QB with poor accuracy. 2 real playmakers. Just tough to sustain O, get 1st downs and put teams away. But what has happened in the 2nd halves this year is absolutely ridiculous...and shameful.
Clapton live now doing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"....oh baby
"btw", Matt? You should know better.
BTW isn't cool? I know there will be no LOLs or little smiley faces in this chat, but okay-I am cool with that. Thanks for keeping it real Ed.
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that it was a mis-type (given that you described it correctly, but F=MA ; the other equation is E=MC^2, which is Einstein's equation related to general relativity.
Of course...total typo! Creative major here, but I did know that one!
Since your a scout, Do you regard Eli Manning as an elite QB? I think he is the best in his division and is a super bowl MVP. He has the tendancy to step up in big games. Your thoughts?
This was a huge topic on CIL-who is best QB in NFC East. I think it is Romo. But there is certainly a cause for Eli. Not Elite. 6 Elite guys-he isn't one of them. But Top 10.
Haden over McCourty? Why?
He is playing WAY better than McCourty in Year 2.
Folks, I am out. Great stuff. Stop back next week, follow me on Twitter and check out the Football Today Podcast.
