OK, let's go with the weekly chat. I'm sure there will be a lot of WR questions so I'll start with the first one I see.
Is Dez practicing today? is it safe to say he's good to go for the lions game?
Bryant is on the practice field. He should be a go for the Lions' game. Looks like a light practice today since it's two days off the Washington game.
Short yardage/goalline rushing is awful. Can you give me any good reasons why Cowboys shouldn't cut Choice and pick up a veteran back specifically for these situations? Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis come to mind . . .
Good reasons? No, I can't give you good reasons. But I think you saw the Cowboys go young in the offseason with their roster moves and they don't want to go with a retread. Another question asked about why not go wide with Felix when you're near the goal line. They ran an off-tackle play vs. the NY Jets for a touchdown and we haven't seen it again. This has been an issue for a couple of years whether the line has been big or smaller, older or younger. They have to get it fixed.
Why wont the Cowboys try out Moss?? with the Cowboys playing the Patriots in week 6, it would help alot by simply getting info on Bellichick's offense...Plus, placing Dez in the slot would be explosive!
Oops. Sorry for that on the previous answer. Now on to Moss, and I'm sure there are a ton of questions here. Over and over Jason Garrett has talked about getting the right kind of guy in the building. Moss isn't the right kind of guy. He quit a couple of times last year. He's not the guy you remember from 2007-08 in New England. If Garrett brought in Moss now, then he would be going against one of his principles, IMO. I just don't see it happening. And I'll answer the Terrell Owens' follow - That's a no too. Does anybody remember why the Cowboys cut him in the first place?
Did McCann get picked up by another team? Probably makes sense to go ahead and cut Buehler now and maybe bring McCann back? Or a goal line running back?
McCann is available. Buehler is hurt right now, so maybe that plays into their thinking of not cutting him. I like what Dan Bailey did vs. Washington on kickoffs. He's not perfect there, but Buehler hasn't been perfect either. If there are more injuries, I would think Buehler's spot is tenuous.
do you expect rob ryan to be even more aggresive once scandrick comes back. I'm really excited about the possibilites I think we have a top 5 cornerback trio in the NFL
I'd hold off on top-five trios for the moment. I like the group but let's see how the Cowboys play against a better passer. That hasn't really happened through three weeks. I think Ryan will be aggressive regardless of his corners because he believes pressure is most important.
With Miles coming back soon, and Robinson's performance on Monday Night, could you see this being a put or shut up week for Ogletree?
I've been an Ogletree fan since he's been here and trumpeted his cause but Monday's game was bad. No other way around it. He has natural skills but against the Redskins the game looked too big for him. That hadn't happened before. I don't think it's put up or shut up but he must do a better job this week of simply knowing where to go.
Love the chat Todd! Seeing what the cowboys have been so far and the fact the NFC east look pretty open..what are the cowboys chances at a playoff spot?
I had them as a wild-card team to start the year, so I'd say the chances are pretty good. You're right about the NFC East. I don't see anybody running away with it, which is why piling up wins early means a lot.
at what point does Red Ball start thinking about moving Free back to RT? He's been abused in the first 3 games and T-Smith has been beastly on the right side. I'm fine with his rookie mistakes because he's a least making up for them with athleticism. Free looks like he's stuck in the mud.
That won't happen this year. Free has struggled the last two games. I thought he was good vs. the Jets. I haven't investigated his play with people in the building yet but I'm told he's not hurt. Just in a slump but it's not one he can be in for long.
Did having an actual fullback in the game make the big difference in the Cowboys running game?
Good question. I like what Fiammetta has done in his two games. He played a lot more vs. Washington. I think it helped some, but I'll give most of the credit to Jones. His big runs came on plays in which he cut back on his own and made people miss. I'm not sure that they were by design.
Toddl, if we picked up someone off the street to play WR would they know the playbook as well as Ogletree day 1?
No. And I realize that will make people do a spit take. But, no, if a guy has never been in this system he will not have it done like a guy who's been here for three years.
Hey Todd! Love your work! How do you see Felix holding up against the monster Lions D-Line? Should we expect to see more Choice and Murray?
Ryan has figured this out. Say good things and the question jumps to the top. Just kidding. It will be a challenge to run it inside vs. the Lions because of Suh but Detroit has the 21st ranked run defense. I wouldn't say you'll see more of the other guys necessarily but I'm ready to see more of Murray.
This is a little nitpicky since it worked out....but do you think that the Cowboys got too conservative trying to run out the clock on the last drive? At the very least take a shot throwing the ball with 2:03 left with the clock stopping anyway.
I wondered that too. Washington had two timeouts and would've burned one of them with a run call, so I wouldn't have been opposed to a pass play there. But then Choice runs out of bounds and the Redskins don't have to use a timeout anyway. That was a big play there because Washington had plenty of time to work the whole field. Choice should say thanks to Anthony Spencer for that strip-sack.
Dez has to be targeted more ofter!!! Todd I believe if Dez has single coverage he should have the ball thrown his way every single time he is that good!!! Backshoulder pass whatever it takes do you agree?
At some point, however, the quarterback has to trust that the guy will be where he is supposed to be. Until that happens all of the time, I'm not sure Romo will go to him every time. Dez can make a lot of things happen on his own, but he has to trust the system to make plays too.
Will I be cleared to play next week?
Newman will be fine and he is on the practice field today. I was told he didn't suffer a concussion. If he did, he wouldn't have returned in the fourth quarter. He was winded.
Have been really impressed with Sean Lee; especially his knack for making plays. I also thought I saw him lining up the defense against Washington. Is he the defense quarterback who is radioed up? If so props to the scouting staff for the pick
Lee is the one with the speaker in his helmet. He has played great and I think you saw the end of him on special teams, too. Bradie James was covering kicks in the second half. Lee has been phenomenal.
Can our pass rush/secondary lock down Stafford, Megatron and the Lions pass attack?
The Lions haven't faced the best of defenses so far and certainly not a pass rush like the Cowboys have showed the first three weeks. Jared Allen gave Jeff Backus trouble. I can see DeMarcus Ware doing the same. It's a must to get to Stafford early because he has been tremendous through the first three games and Johnson is going off with six touchdowns.
Hi Todd, how much longer until Miles is ready?
Looks like he'll be back for the Patriots game on Oct. 16
With Dockery hurt and Nagy starting, do you think the Cowboys need to look at bringing back Holland or even Leonard Davis or do you think the youth movement is going to continue?
I don't see them bringing back Holland or Davis. Youth it is. Bill Nagy will get the chance. He struggled vs. Washington and Suh is a mountain of a player. It'll be tough here.
Do you think we will get rid of a kicker?
Eventually, yes. Not sure why it doesn't happen soon.
How much do you think Hatch being out will hurt that pass rush. I realize Rob calls blitzes more then most but seemed w/o Hatch the Pass rush was slowed especially in the 2nd half. Thoughts?
Hatcher will be a loss but the rush was better in the second half than it was in the first half. Hatcher has played the best football of his career. It's like the light has come on for him. I think you'll see more Victor Butler as a result and Ryan moving guys around.
Did Newman suffer concusion? Will he be playing this week, also is Scandrick out of the boot and is there a chance he plays this week?
Was told Newman did not suffer a concussion. He should be good to go this week. Scandrick is out of the boot and doing resistance training. I think he'll be back for the New England game, too.
Why do teh Cowboys run shot gun formation inside the 10? Seems that it would be easier to pass under center due to playaction. Your thoughts?
I've asked around on this. I'm told Garrett likes the gun because it leads to the QB getting the ball out quicker. But he loves the gun down there. Ten snaps down there this year and it hasn't led to much success.
I coudn't Understand why didn't the Dallas Cowboys put another Quarterback on Monday Night for Tony Romo since Romo was Grimmacing when he was throwing?
Well, they won the game, so I'm not sure what the complaint is. They felt like Romo gave them the best chance to win the game.
Is this where I'm supposed to be?
You made it to the practice field, so that's a good start.
Todd, you ESPN guys do a great job! Can you fill us in on the injury situation? Where will the team be health wise after the Bye week?
Romo, Felix Jones, Jason Hatcher, Dez Bryant, Terence Newman are practicing today. Buehler, Scandrick, Dockery and Austin are not. With the exception of Dockery, I think everybody will be back after the bye.
Will Jesse Holley have another game like he did against the 49ers this season?
I don't believe so. It's a great story, but I think we've seen the pinnacle.
I dont get why they say this is a bad match up for Dallas. The O-line isnt the best, and there left tackle has been in question. I think Ware and Spencer have a field day...All it takes it a good pass rush to win a game, ask Tom Brady.
You make a good point, Dustin. It will be on the Dallas pressure to make sure the secondary doesn't get exposed. Last year showed me that pressure makes a secondary; a secondary doesn't make pressure. Does that make sense?
DO you think the Boys line can hold up to a top 3 D-Line in the NFL? With Suh in the middle will we be holding our breath every dropback by Romo?
It'll be tough. Suh is awfully difficult to block but I can see them doing things to get away from Suh by moving the pocket if Romo can move around a little better.
Todd can you give me jerry and jason email , i think garrett is a good coach , but Moss was the same guy when belichick got him and he was a model citizen under this guy he just want's to win. With all kids if you allowed him to run the house he will i dont think jg is that type of guy, but we can compete with anybody out there but we not winning anything with just two wr's that get hurt then what, let a three yr guy learn the same book for three more yrs
Darvell, don't shoot the messenger here. Jerry said today they will not look at veteran wide receivers. I'm not opposed to a vet wide receiver if Austin or Bryant are out a long time but I don't want Moss. Belichick traded Moss last year for a reason, so I wouldn't say he was a model citizen in 2010.
Has Josh Brent been active in games?
He's played. Done OK as a backup but not getting a lot of work.
Has Phillip Tanner been active for any of the games? If so, could he possibly be the answer for the short yadage plays? He played his way on the team, I have a good feeling he could pick up 1 or 2 yards when needed.
Darvell asked about Tanner too, so I'll answer it in one shot - Tanner was active vs. San Fran but didn't get a snap on offense. He looked good in the preseason but I don't know if that translates to the regular season against No. 1 defenses. I like Tanner but there's a lot that goes into play running back, especially the blitz pick ups. Choice knows that better than any of the backups. With a banged up QB, I don't think you take that risk right now.
Hi Todd, I really enjoy your work! My question is will the Cowboys think about making any trades for a young lineman before the dead line? Thanks
Seems like I opened a can of work with the "enjoy your work" stuff. Oh well. Thanks for the kind words. I don't see any team trading young linemen because they are so hard to find. Now, I wouldn't be opposed to sending out feelers on guys like Bennett and Choice. They are in the final years of their contract and won't be back in 2012. Even if you get a seventh rounder back, to me, that would be worth it.
You don't look as terrible on tv as you do in the pic above.
Thanks. I think. Maybe I'll get a new photo.
Todd,I realize a mistake is a mistake, BUT how is Choice still on the team after running out of bounds late in the game? He's a 3rd year guy, Not a rookie... Thx
Poor decision on his part. Marion Barber caught a lot of grief around here but he was/is a smart player. He understood time and score situations very well. Choice does too but he made a mistake. After the game in the locker room you could tell how upset he was.
Hey Todd,Do you think the Cowboys should have made a run for Brian Waters when he was available. Since Bill Nagy hasn't looked very good so far, is it possible they give Dacid Arkin a look?
No, they went with Dockery instead. He was their choice all along through camp. Waters was discussed but it never got any momentum. Arkin started off OK in camp but faded down the stretch and Nagy took the job. We don't see practice so it's hard to say how he's doing now, but I don't see him getting the nod anytime soon. I'll check on that though.
hey todd love the work you do um so should i stop buying cowboy stuff this year and dont wacth this year and wait for next year cause if am reading and hearing right we dont want to win this year right with the youth movement no wr other then the two guys who been here three years and dont know were to go i mean tell me straight we dont want to win this year cause there are guys out there who can help but we dont want them is that correct
Why stop watching? They're 2-1 and playing exciting games. Who says they don't want to win? I've never used the rebuilding word. You don't rebuild with a QB like Romo around and some of these other talents. You try to win the game, to channel my inner Herm Edwards.
Don't know if its been asked---but is Scandrick going to play???? HOPEFULLY! Bennett had a sparain and came back after a week!
Scandrick won't play this week. He'll be back after the bye. His sprain was more severe than Bennett's.
Sean Lee has been EXCELLENT!!! I'm not seeing the same level of play from either James or Brooking! Tell you the truth I'm looking forward to see Bruce Carter suit up after we gets off the PUP list I believe those 2 will lay the foundation for this team at LB for years to come!! Do you agree?
I'm holding off on Carter because I've never seen him play. But what you're saying is certainly the Cowboys' hope. Carter looks athletic but I think he'll contribute on special teams only this year.
Hi Todd thanks for the hour of distraction from work... My question, with Robinson coming from a similiar offense in the Chargers, can you see him starting this week instead of Ogletree? To me, it just seemed like Romo trusts him more then Ogletree.
Starting? No. I think they keep it the sasme. I'm not sure Romo trusts him more based off one game. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with Ogletree but I'm not ready to throw him out either.
Free displayed a terrible game. The DE & LB will just run around him. He is stiff at LT. Does the coaching staff recognize that and will they try to address that in the 2012 draft?
Randy, he just signed a four-year, $32 million deal. He's not going anywhere. Sorry. He's had two poor games but he also has a body of work that says he'll be fine.
Granted the glaring holes in our secondary have slightly diminished through the first three games. At what point, does Jerry decide to upgrade the secondary?
I think you'll see them look in the draft for help. They won't make any big-time trades this year and there's nobody really available now that will be a difference maker. I like what the safeties have done overall so far and Jenkins has done a god job, Newman played well vs. the Redskins.
How would u feel about Costa at guard and Kowalski the starting center?
Haven't thought about it. I'm not sure that does much for you honestly. I'll ask but I don't see that being the move they make.
Also, what about Manuwai from Jax......he's free and a big boy who can handle it better than Nagy..........can you find out. Myabe Garett thinks he's still on their roster!
I'm sure the pro department knows who's available and who isn't.
I'm going to have to cut it a little short today because Garrett's press conference has been moved up. Thanks for all of the questions.Remember to check out the blog for updates during the day and you can follow me on Twitter (@toddarcher) too. Thanks again.Courage.
