Keeping my streak alive, I'm 10 minutes late again. Here we go.
what would be your top 3 teams to expand the big12?
BYU, Air Force, Boise State
What is a logical response to the supporters of Oregon State who want to put Mike Riley on the hot seat? They are struggling now but he has proven to be a better than good coach. I think those who want to get rid of him are off their rocker, but how do you give them the proper perspective? Thanks.
Where would Oregon State football be without Mike Riley? He laid the foundation for Dennis Erickson's championship season. He has led the Beavers to their most successful decade in memory (ever?). What's hard to understand about what he's meant to the program?
Will Auburn burst the overated bubble that the Carolina Gamecocks seem to be in right now?
I don't see it. Auburn is so young. We saw how they crumbled in the second half at Clemson. I think the Tigers will be overmatched against a very talented team playing in front of its fans.
Ivan, can we blame all this expansion idiocy on the SEC? After all, if their greedy presidents hadn't decided to add a 12th team in order to get a "championship" game, would we be where we are today?
Kind of like blaming Thomas Edison for the computer, isn't it? The SEC did find the loophole in the NCAA Manual that allowed for the conference championship game. But so much has happened since. If you blame the SEC for anything, pin it on Georgia (and Oklahoma) for suing the NCAA (successfully) so that schools own their TV rights. That happened about a decade before the SEC expanded.
I have to admit that I'm a fan of Andrew Luck and have Luck Envy. The kid is spectacular and I admire how articulate he is. Every time I see him I can't help but wish he was playing in South Bend. Which NFL team will get Luck-y in the draft?
The first one that picks. I have no idea which one that will be, but I have a hard time believing Luck won't be the first player picked.
Ivan, True or False: Wisconsin is the most complete, well-rounded team right now. Offense is obviously firing on all cylinders, and their defense has been impressive, even against weak competition.
False, only because Wisconsin's non-conference schedule has been uncharacteristically soft. Blame Oregon State if you want, but the other three opponents never were going to bring any challenge to the Badgers. I am concerned that Wisconsin's schedule has been so soft that the Badgers may not be ready for Nebraska.
You did not rank Arkansas in the top 25 in your Power Rankings. Is that a joke?
That's not a joke. Razorbacks were completely overmatched Saturday. They struggled to put Troy (a good team) away. They played an FCS team and the worst team in the FBS. Let's see how they do against the Aggies. I could be wrong.
Ivan, give me your thoughts on Bama's RB duo this year vs last year. Richardson and Lacy have looked pretty darned impressive. But was Ingram and Richardson better?
I think Ingram and Richardson were better. If Richardson, even as a freshman, is the "second" back, that's the best pairing you can have.
UCF is blaming the USF President for not being invited to the Big EAST. It is hard to believe USF has that kind of pull in the Big EAST, which is a basketball dominated conference. Do they?
That's the story going around. Conferences are always deferential to their members when it comes to expansion. That said, if the Big East doesn't take UCF, it's not smart enough to remain an AQ conference.
Sir, if Stephen Garcia can play like a 5th year senior instead of a high-school backup and get Alshon Jeffrey the ball a lot more to balance the offensive side of the ball. In your opinion, how far (with our Defense playing like it did saturday) can South Carolina go.
The Gamecocks have more mistakes than Garcia to correct. Their tackling hasn't been very good, for one thing.
Ivan, what's your opinion on what has taken place at New Mexico over the weekend and who do you think is on the shortlist for that head coaching job?
Whoever takes that job either has a vision that I don't or is proving how badly he wants to be a head coach. Mike Locksley ran that program into a ditch, and it's going to need a huge tow truck to pull it out.
Ivan, why could officials change the score of the USC-Utah game hours afterwards, yet the Syracuse-Toledo score cannot be changed? In both cases - the mistake happened at a point in the game when no realistic changes in coaches decisions could have been made (unless Syracuse goes for an onside kick with a 2 point lead - unlikely)
If memory serves, the USC-Utah score was a miscommunication between the field and the press box. The call on the field was correct. I sympathize with Toledo -- how can you not? -- but I think a rule that would allow for games to be changed after they conclude would create problems none of us foresee. That said, I'd love to see Syracuse vacate the win. It won't happen, but it would be a nice touch of civility in an age where we don't have as much as we once did.
Ivan, with the report that the BCS will change how many teams from a conference can get into a BCS game, how does it affect the following, 1) Big East- they appear now to be the weakest conference in the BCS 2) In order to have a chance to get to the BCS game, ND and Boisie MUST join a BCS conference and lastly, this kills the MWC chances of getting BCS status? Thanks.
If the BCS follows through with that, I think the AQs will damage each other more than the non-AQs. The non-AQs still have a way to qualify automatically for a berth. As for the MWC, if it meets the criteria set up by the BCS, it will get a bid. Boise State will help the MWC in that regard. The league has a chance.
Ivan, if Iowa State is +2 on turnovers and has 6 or few penalties, do they win Saturday over Texas?
They'd win over Texas and most everybody else.
What is your prediction of when Syracuse and Pitt will begin ACC play?
I don't see the Big East relenting before 2014, unless Pitt and Syracuse cough up a lot of money.
Ivan, LSU's vaunted defense did what they needed to do last week against West Virginia, but they still gave up over 500 yards. Do you think that pro-style offense of Charlie Weiss's is now starting to look like something that LSU needs to worry about?
Matt, your team moved into No. 1 this week. Enjoy the ride.
So Ivan can you explain your thoughts on how you're not impressed with Clemson beating a YOUNG Auburn team? Even though Clemson is playing a first year starter and qb, 2 freshman at wr....not to mention all the other first year players on both sides or the ball and the first season with Chad Morris as the OC
Yeah, I heard from a few IPTAY members on that remark. But I stand by it. There's a huge difference, when dealing with young teams, between playing at home and playing on the road. Let's see how Clemson's young players do at Lane Stadium.
Ivan, if LSU fans want to say that they're number 1 this week, don't they have to acknowledge that they split the title with USC years ago? Both rankings were by the AP...
Yes, Tom, but don't hold your breath.
South Florida is only a 3-point favorite thursday night at Pitt. Is there something I'm missing? Pitt has not been impressive so far this year.
I like South Florida a lot. I don't understand that, either.
Ivan, curious as to why ESPN and other media refer to AP poll rankings versus better qualified rankings from the coaches who are actually involved in the game? And the AP poll doesn't even factor into the BCS rankings.
Coaches don't have time to watch games. They watch their team and the team they play that week. Writers cover more ground and have nothing at stake.
will huskers win against Wisconsin.
I like Wisconsin. Russell Wilson has answered all my questions about making a quick transition. The game is at Camp Randall, and I think the entire league will be juiced to play well against the Huskers this season. It will be a pride thing.
Do you know what a Padawan is?
Yes, but unlike Muschamp,I am old enough to have a son that has watched all six movies several times.
Your defense of the ESPN/Longhorn network is that another company would have done it even ESPN hadn't? When your mom got mad at you and you told her "but everyone else is doing it," did she accept that? I sure hope not. Disappointed in your rationalize, sir.
You know, I was going to get into this, but most people already have their minds made up, so I'll stand by my column and move on.
As to the AP vs. coaches poll earlier, I have a follow up. The coaches decided to jump Stanford over Boise this week when Stanford was on a bye and Boise looked impressive in dominating Tulsa until the 2nd and 3rd stringers were inserted. The AP writers did not. Yet the coaches pool counts in the BCS standings. So, don't Boise fans have a right to be upset about this ignorant votes the coaches are casting.
Yes. The BCS formula drives me nuts, too. It makes it very difficult to take the BCS seriously, and I say that as a guy who does not want a playoff. The BCS, in this and sundry other ways, is its own worst enemy.
Any George Thorogood stories in honor of the Delaware Destroyer hosting a chat opposite of you?
Saw Thorogood in LA in the spring of '81, I think. Don't remember much of it. Didn't remember much the day after, either.
Who is more likely to land a job first: Mike Leach or RichRod?
RichRod. He didn't sue his employer.
Is a 9-3 season enough for me to keep my job with the Buckeyes after this season? Or will the Urban Meyer bandwagon be too strong? What if we win our bowl game?
I think questions where y'all put your name in as a player or a coach are too cute by half. But I'll answer it -- it depends on the NCAA penalty. No big-name coach will want to sludge through what Lane Kiffin is going through at USC.
If the PSU head coaching job somehow becomes available next year, are there unemployed coaches who would think that the job was not big enough to consider? Just wondering what PSU's relevancy is in 2012.
Big Ten, 100,000-plus fans, great tradition; sounds relevant to me. I predict the head coach in 2012 will be Joseph V. Paterno.
Honestly, I didn't even know you wrote a column about the network. I just read it in your chat last week (or maybe the week before). I'll try to find your column and see if I change my mind.
I didn't write a column about the network. I wrote a column about A&M leaving the Big 12.
Ivan, happy new year to you. I read Katz's column and found it interesting that the bball coaches are clamoring for the mega-conferences. Do you think that will have any sway over the next realignment saga, or is football going to always rule the day (the ACC move looks more like a bball move to me, btw).
Happy New Year, Lou (and everyone else). I think football has been driving the bus for 20 years. Can you imagine a basketball scenario in which Syracuse would leave the league that it put on the map (and vice-versa)?
Please explain your A&M hate and why you think it was a good/bad move to bolt for the SEC. Please don't say - "bad move b/c they will get crushed"...that's for kids to say, you should know better - A
I don't hate Texas A&M. I don't agree that Texas A
What do you think happens with the rest of Georgia's season?
I think Georgia is going to have a very good season. Win 9-10 games.
Oh, yeah. I read that one. I dunno. It seemed to toe the line between respect for the Aggie spirit and mocking their eternal optimism.
Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. Glad you figured that out. Not everyone did.
How do you like the Gators in the swamp this weekend against Bama?
I think Florida is too young to stay with Alabama for four quarters.
Ivan, what is really up at USC? They look terrible. Is it the sanctions? or what?
I think it's the sanctions and the fact that Pete Carroll's recruiting really dropped off toward the end of his tenure. The older guys aren't of the same quality, and the younger guys are really, really young, and they have a numbers issue. A lot of problems, in other words.
I love your 3-point insight but your chats have been a bit bullish and mean spirited.
I'm sorry it comes across that way. I don't intend to be "bullish and mean-spirited." I am addicted to sarcasm, I'll grant you that. And tone of voice is never heard over the internet.
Thanks, guys. Beano is up next. Talk to you next week.
