Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to this week's chat. New notebook is up, plenty of news stories and blogs and new blog coming this afternoon. Not much on the schedule this week, but a lot of fall fights coming and I was also at the Khan-Peterson press conference yesterday, so let's get to it.

Brad (Columbus)

I know Wlad has a hard time finding opponents who will fight him, but Mormeck? That's like in the 80s with Hulk Hogan fighting the midget wrestlers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Yeah, even in a crappy heavyweight division this is a pretty weak fight. Klitschko, however, has fought everybody. There weren't THAT many other choices.

Roy (Reno)

I know Timmy has taken a lot of heat in these chats but he seems to be on his way from being expelled from the Winky Wright School of Business.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Depends on how things go.

Joey (Chicago)

Enjoyed the Notebook, Dan. Glad it was posted BEFORE the chat and thanks for including the European scene on your quick hits section.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I genetally include European stuff. I know there are a lot of readers from Europe, so I try to get in as much as I can. Glad you noticed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

No, I still think it was a mistake and that I respectfully disagreed with him. But at the end of the day it is his career and he has to make the choices. He is content with his decision so that it pretty much the only thing that really counts. If he's OK with it, good for him. But he never cleaned out 140 and he did duck the fight. That is fact.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Dec. 3 PPV is definitely a freak card. A must buy for any true fan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I totally agree and wrote a blog this week saying the same thing.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Dan, What is your opinion on the Pacquiao undercard? Before the undercard was finalized I was almost guaranteed to get the Pacquiao fight, and skip the Cotto fight as I was planning on only ordering one of the fights. After seeing the finalized cards I am now leaning more towards purchasing the Cotto/Margarito card instead.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

It is OK. I dont like the Bradley-Casamayor matchup. I think it sucks to be frank. I'm glad Tim is back in action but this is not a good matchup. Alvarado-Prescott is solid and Cruz-Burgos is also OK, but there's nothing on the undercard to REALLY get me pumped like there is with the Pacquiao-Margarito card.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Do you think it will hurt Cotto by not having Stewart in his corner

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think it was a mistake to drop Steward.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Happy Friday Dan. Has Roman Gonzalez cracked your top 20 yet or does he still have some work to do?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Still has some work to do. I'm a fan of his. Been watching him since when he won a strawweight title. Great power for a little guy and very enjoyable style to watch, but he has not had a chance to have any kind of top opponent yet.

Dan (DC)

when do khan vs peterson tickets go on sale and what is price range

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

They are not on sale yet. Probably in the next week or two. At the press conference, Richard Schaefer said the prices would run from $300 down to $25. It will definitely be an affordable show.

Brian (DC)

Let's say Pacquiao isn't available for Bradley next year. Who would be Bradley's next best option?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Obviously, I want to see Khan-Bradley.

Edwin (Houston)

Any word on the undercard bouts for the Cavez-Manfredo bout and when tickets are expected to go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Not yet, although as for HBO that night they will only show one live bout.

Darren (Dallas, Tx)

What ever happened to undefeated Heavyweight Malik Scott?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

He is probably off somewhere winning a sparring session 80-72.

Carlos (Gilroy)

Dan, is Rios-Murray a good scrap? Wouldn't Molina have been a better opponent than Murray?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It is an excellent scrap I think. Molina would have been fine too, but to me it's six of one, half dozen of the other.

Raul Jr. (Everett, WA)

DTM, do you know the timetable for Robert Guerrero's comeback? I know he just started rehab but have him or his team informed you with an approximate date? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

With this injury, they are saying he won't be back until at least February.

Alec (Nashville)

Do you think that Cintron will be the best opponent Canelo has faced so far in his career?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Probably, although that is not saying all that much.

Rocks (New York, NY)

Is this Peterson fight any form of danger for Amir Khan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I think the fact that Peterson is a very good boxer and will be at home means it is not a slam dunk win for Khan, although I do favor him.

Carlos (Gilroy)

How is it that Guillermo Jones keeps his belt but other boxers are stripped immediately for being inactive?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I have no idea other than that maybe Guillermo has some photos of Gilberto Mendoza in a compromising position.

Joe (PA)

Do you think Hopkins is better all time than Roy Jones Jr?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I think they are both all-time greats who have accomplished a lot. It's a really hard distinction to make. Roy was UNTOUCHABLE for a decade and supreme fighter. Do not forget that. The biggest difference is that Roy's fundamentals were not good. Once he lost a step, it was over. BHop, however, is a master technician with great fundamentals, so even when he slowed down a little he could still get by at a top level because he had the fundamental foundation (to go with a great chin). Bottom line is that they are both great and both first ballot HOFers.

Jake (Homewood, IL)

Danny,Why do you think Manny has lost two fighters recently? Anything to do with his gig at HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I dont think they are at all related. Different circumstances and just a coincedence I think.

Kieran (Alexandria)

GANGSTA!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

YES!! I was just transcribing some of the quotes from yesterday's presser for Khan-Peterson and I will be saving the clip of Richard Schaefer saying "GANGSTA" a couple of times. Hilarious.

Sam (Santa Monica)

Rios-Murray is an excellent fight! Both guys refuse to back down. We may have to see changes in Murray's style though because you cannot fight Rios by pressuring him. Antillon is a very good pressure fighter, and simply got rocked repeatedly.

James (Holland)

What does it say about the LHW division if Hopkins beats Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

That BHop is still champion.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I can't make up my mind. Do we give Barker credit for lasting as long as he did and doing some damage or do we not because he only threw like 10 punches the entire fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I'll give him credit, but I also know that Martinez was not close to 100 percent going into the fight.

Ollie (San Antonio)

Hey Dan so what can you tell us about Cotto's new trainer? Because I feel like not a whole lot has been said about him, do you think he's a good fit for Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I am not overly familiar with him but he has worked with many of the Cubans and was a coach on the national team for about 15 years. My opinion is that he came way cheaper than Emanuel and the Cottos are known for being tight.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Not only is Casamayor a weak opponent, but he is usually pretty hard to look good against. If TR wants to build a fanbase for Bradley, shouldn't they put him in against a fighter that will make a good fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

You would think.

Koolkc107 (Deland, Fl)

Devil's advocate, Dan. Bradley didn't duck Khan at all; he was so at odds with his promoter that he didn't want Shaw to make another cent off his back. Khan will be there in 2012, and it will be as big or bigger then, so no harm done.thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

The fight was there right now at 140 and he could have fought the fight HE begged for and then got for a lot of money at 50-50. He could have avoided the lawsuit and honored his contract. Shaw still had a fight left with him. Nobody disputes that so Shaw was entitled to earn money on the next fight.

Mike (pa)

whats next for Martinez since he won't get PAC or Floyd how bout winner of cotto margocheato ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Totally up in the air, but I would not be shocked if he was fighting Macklin next.

Jordan (Matsue, Japan)

Bradley and Top Rank make sense. Bradley is just letting the fight with Khan marinate.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Brian (Toronto)

The more I listen to Tim Bradley, the more I think he is delusional.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

When he said beating Khan would do nothing for his career I really questioned that. It is simply not true.

Matt (Preston, UK)

Dan, you said the Khan-Peterson presser was one of the best you've been to in ages, how so?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Just enjoyed it. The speakers were mostly interesting with good humor. The room PR maven Kelly Swanson picked at a really nice hotel neat the White House was great. Both guys were good interviews and there was no problem getting a chance to talk to both them. It moved quickly. Just a professionaly handled, tight press conference where I got what I needed to do my job. I'll have a column on the fight/presser up this afternoon.

Cachupoy (England)

Hi Dan, what's the latest news about PPV sales for Mayweather vs Ortiz? What's taking them so long?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Just hasn't been done yet and Schaefer has been traveling -- to Mexico and England and DC in the past few days. So not sure what it up specifically, but I imagine we'll get a number at some point.

Joe (Santa Monica)

Bradley vs. Casamayor, whoever causes a cut via headbutt wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Why only one head butt?

Kieran (Alexandria)

"We burned down the White House in 1814." When diplomats talk smack.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

That was a classic quote.

Jeremy O' Connell (Kerry, Ireland)

Dan, are you ready to admit you were wrong to bash Bradley for not fighting Khan? It seemed obvious that he wasn't gonna take the 50-50 rish of a Khan fight when he could get a lucrative Pacman fight around the corner, seems like smart business to me, not terrible business as you said

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

He could have done the Khan fight, made great money, won, been done with his promotional contract, not gotten sued, still signed with Top Rank and fought in November and still been in line to fight Manny.

Matt (LA)

Going to Hopkins/Dawson live. Undercard seems pretty good...what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

The undercard is solid. Linares-DeMarco is interesting to me. So is Garcia-Holt. Malignaggi-Lora is OK, nothing to write home about. Off TV, I'm interested to see what Bozella can do, such a great story. And Collazo is back in a solid fight with Freddy Hernandez. Overall, it should be good. I will be in LA for the fight as well.

Mike (Chicago)

Any presser in which you get to go home that same night will automatically be one of the best!

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

True, although traffic was a pain coming home. Took me 25 minutes to get there and about 1:15 to get home. 395 SUCKS at rush hour.

Ali (Tampa)

Have you ever witnessed a fighter or boxing personality do something completely insane, after hours, but you choose not to reveal the details...on the record? If so, without giving the details, which boxer/boxing personality comes to mind?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

100 percent yes.

John (CA)

Do you think Roy would have won the rematch with Hopkins if had taken place in 2000 instead of 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Obviously, he would have had a much better chance and been the favorite.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Here's my update on Cris Arreola, which was posted this morning: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7070851/heavyweight-contender-cristobal-arreola-fight-mexico

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

And if you have not checked it out yet, here is the link to today's massive notebook: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7070226/timothy-bradley-bad-year-turns-better-busier

Brian (kalamazoo mi)

Is Mike Lee a legit prospect or just a good story?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

A bit of both. He's very raw, so it's early, but he's a hard worker, has a good team and has shown a fan friendly style. And he is also a good story.

John (Phoenix)

Didnt you crush Berto for fighting Hernandez? Now if it a solid fight with the guy that went life or death with Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Collazo has not fought much in the past couple of years and HBO isn't spending $950,000 on it. As an off TV undercard fight for short money I am fine with that match and think it might be entertaining.

Joel Julio ((Looking for a fight))

Hi Dad!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Reid (Cleveland)

What did you think of Toshiaki Nishioka's perfomrance against Marquez? Is he a threat to Donaire (if and when they fight)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Very professional and good performance. Did not surprise me. I've seen a ton of Nishioka fights and I have high regard for him. I have him in the top 20 p4p. He is definitely a threat to Donaire.

Steve (NYC)

How does Marrone get a title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Time for a little math lesson. Don King + disgusting WBA - integrity = hobo title shot.

Nick X. (Williston Park)

Do you believe Bob Arum wanted to put Bradley in with Maidana?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Not entirely.

Mike (Jersey)

Do you think people underestimate the effect of going up to heavyweight had on Roy Jones Jr or do you think his skills would have eroded at the same pace anyway?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I think Roy dropping back to 175 and losing so much weight (and muscle) quickened the pace of his decline. He has not been the same since.

eddie (mpls)

"Who cares what they say," Arum said. THAT is why it's so frustrating to be a boxing fan sometimes.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Yup.

Jim (Atwater, CA)

Dan, any hope of ever seeing Rios-Maidana? What do you think of that fight, sounds like a war to me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Absolutely love it. I dont think it is impossible, but I dont think it is likely either. Rios is going to go to 140 soon and by the time he goes there Maidana will probably be going to 147.

David (Atlanta)

was Tarver approached for the December Wlad fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Not that I am aware of.

Robert (London)

Is Macklin still going to fight before the end of the year, and if so, any idea on the opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, he is supposed to fight in December. No opponent yet.

tim (st. lou)

in retrospect, how much of a threat do you think Darius M posed to Roy for all of those years?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I always thought Roy would have won, but I would have liked to see it. Roy was MUCH faster than Dariusz and back then Roy never got hit too much, so even though Dariurz was a respectable puncher, I dont think he would have landed much clean.

edwin: from a place unknown [via mobile]

Hello dan, when is erislandy lara fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

TBA.

AL M (NYC)

Met Dimitry Pirog ringside on saturday night, I never realized how big he was, he has an American style, I would love to see him fight any one of Lou's MWs, an chance one of those fights can get made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Pirog is a pretty big middleweight. I had a chance to talk to him also last week. He and his people want to fight in the US regularly. It is a matter of getting a network on board. HBO has said it was interested but has ignored him for more than a year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

TBA. Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes.

Nick (NYC)

Who from HBO is calling the PPV tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

There is no PPV tomorrow.

Isai (OKC)

Heard this morning that PPV buys for Mayweather could be as low as 850k. How possible is the statement?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

From what I have been told by Schaefer and HBO that is preposterous. Much higher.

Nick (NYC)

Who from HBO is calling the Hopkins PPV next week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Lampley, Max and Emanuel.

Camacho (Yucaipa, CA)

Will you be ring side for the Hopkins fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Yes sir.

george (bronx)

i see Edwin Rodriguez and Will Rosinski will be fighting on Showtime. I think its great to see two undefeated former national amateur champs fighting. What are your thoughts on the fight??

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I think Rodriguez wins easily.

Berndawg (CHI )

Terrific scrap on Shobox tonite freaks....Bogere vs. Contreras!!!!!..Enjoy!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

It is a good fight tonight. I look forward to it.

Manuel (Tampa)

Is Trinidad a hall of famer in your book?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

My book and everyone else's. Duh.

David (Atlanta)

i'm hoping David Stern cancels some NBA games on Monday. Do you think ESPN would be immediately open to putting on some shows?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

As I have said over and over -- if/when the NBA cancels games one of the likely replacement programs on ESPN is boxing, according to people I speak with at the network. How soon, when, where, what fights? Not a clue. I'll let ya know when there is something concrete to say.

Camacho (Yucaipa, CA)

I've seen a video in which Khan says that Mayweather has agreed to fight him. Any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Not true at all and Khan clarified the remarks at yesterday's press conference.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Dan, you missed your calling. Should have been a math teacher. Classic.

Milton (Raleigh, NC)

Dan, spot on notebook. In your opinion, is the Cotto-Margo fight a career killer for the loser?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

The loser of the main event is in a bad way.

Jerry (Pawnee)

Will there be people who do not vote for Thomas Hearns on the first ballot for HOF? If there are, can you tell us who they are so we can punch them in the face?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Some idiot will not vote for him.

jcs (edmonton)

To me, Trinidad feels more like the Hall of Very Good. yeah, he beat DLH and Vargas, but he also lost some big fights and didn't look very good in them.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

If you dont think Tito is a HOFer you dont know about boxing. Period. He is a slam dunk, first ballot guy. NO QUESTION.

Floyd "Real Steel" Mayweather (the year 2020)

Dan Rafael, you don't know $%*@ about robot boxing!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

LOL!

Peter (Philadelphia)

Russ Amber did a good job in Sergio's corner stopping the bleeding from his nose. Did you get a chance to talk to Russ? Is he part of Team Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Yes he did and he also gave credit to the doctor in Sergio's corner. I can't recall his name. I did talk to Russ, which I always enjoy. He is a friend.

Doug (UK)

Do you think Khan-Peterson will do good at the gate, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I think it will do well here.

Matt (Preston, UK)

Speaking of HOF - do you know if Nigel Benn or Chris Eubank have ever been on the ballot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

They have not and I have complained about it. It's a joke. I'm not saying they are HOFers, but I do believe that they and several others of the era should at least be on the ballot for an up or down vote. Benn, Eubank, Steve Collins, Paulie Ayala, etc... They should be voted on. Instead, there are the same guys who have been on the ballot seemingly forever who do not get any support and they only put three new guys on per year. It is wrong.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

No live Solo Boxeo telecast tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

No, it is taped fights, a Hopkins, Linares and Garcia fight as they promote next week's PPV.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Reminder: about 5% of the voters in the Baseball Hall of Fame didn't vote for Babe Ruth in 1936. There's always someone who is a knucklehead that ends up getting a ballot.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Exactly. And they are also idiots.

Reid (Cleveland)

Tito Trinidad not a hall of famer? Are you kidding me? YouTube his fights with Vargas, David Reid, William Joppy and Maurice Blocker. Yes, Hopinks beat him, but Hopkins is also an all-time great!

bill (pgh)

DTM- the tweet the other day about the new HBO series ending up on TNT or TBS was too much of a tease. Do you have any details?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Just what I tweeted. I have written about the new HBO series. I was told that it was possible that it might wind up on a Turner net either rather than HBO2 or in addition to HBO2.

Skeelo (Del City)

Thanks for not answering any of my questions

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

No problem. They probably sucked.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Will Wlad-Mormeck be on US TV? Seems like Tarver would have been a much easier sell to the networks over here and Wlad against anyone is a big deal in Europe.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

The Klitshckos derive most of their money in Europe and the US market would probably not pay more for Klitschko-Tarver than Klitschko-Mormeck anyway. In any event, there is no US TV yet for Klitschko-Mormeck, but it could wind up on Epix and ESPN3 is also out there with some interest.

David (Atlanta)

you have got to have some inside EPIX knowledge? There are a couple big European cards upcoming. Will they cover?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

They are talking about a lot of things, but the schedule is not set.

Hank (Missouri)

R.I.P. Steve Jobs.

Jordan (Matsue, Japan)

"No problem. They probably sucked." HAHAHA!!! Pay the Dan, Shirley.

Boxing Newbie (Hong Kong)

I am going to check out Real Steel this Sunday in HK, just wondering whether you have any interest in this movie or not?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Not interested. I actually turned down an offer to be in it because I thought it was so stupid.

Mike (Jersey)

i heard in the movie Merchant says "if i was a futuristic boxing robot i would kick your ass"

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas)

Dan, you're voting for Sven Ottke, right? Look at the record. Tell me who else went 15 years without a loss. TELL ME.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

No, sorry bro. Not voting for Ottke and have not voted for him in any year he has been on the ballot.

Joe (Ny)

dan in retrospect do u have more respect for Jermaine Taylor for clearly beating Hopkins twice. That was 5 years ago when everyone thought hopkins was washed up at the end of his career but obviously he was not

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

No because I always respected Jermain for those wins.

Danny (L.A.)

How soon do you see the Arreola vs. Klitschko fight happening???

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

If it happens, I would say next year in the US.

nizzi (des moines) [via mobile]

Dan, why would wlad take this fight and not fight arreola?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

This fight is in Europe. If he fights Arreola it is an American fight on HBO. The timing was not right for now. HBO doesnt have room or money on its sked this year to do the fight and there would be more of a chance next year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

If you missed it, here's my blog from the other day with a new one coming today: http://espn.go.com/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/7061836/miguel-cotto-antonio-margarito-ii-ppv-undercard-offers-value

Camacho (Yucaipa, CA)

Have you seen the Klitschoko documentary? it premiers the 21 here in LA

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Yes, I have seen it and it is very good -- and I am not just saying that because I am featured prominently in it.

David ((NY, NY))

Dan, for significance of the fight and the sheer controversy it created, is PBF KO4 Ortiz a candidate for KO of the year? Or does that not factor into the equation?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I think it is for the reasons you said plus the fact that it was a good KO.

sweet pea (VA)

Care to comment on the rumor going around the internet that there is only one Ricky Hatton?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Truth, not rumor. There is only one Ricky Hatton.

T$ (PDX)

How soon do you see Mayweather fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

With pros or security guards?

Jason (DE)

If Jorge Arce retires tomorrow, does he get in the hall of fame? How about Wonjongkam?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I think both get in, yes.

Jeff (CA)

Has Lou Dibella said when Zsolt Erdei is fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

They've been working on some things, maybe Pascal, for example, but nothing is set yet.

Emilio (Sacramento)

Macklin/Martinez is the best fight in the division.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I dont disagree.

Shawn (Tempe)

Any interest in Pirog v. Maravilla?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Also would be fine.

Isai (OKC)

Would love this card--Pirog vs Macklin; Martinez vs Lee. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Sign me up please.

Carlos (Gilroy)

Dan, were Jones and BHop "afraid" of each other in their primes? Could that be a reason they didn't make a rematch until it was too late

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

No, they were just too stubborn to make a deal.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Is it safe to assume Mark '2 Sharp' Johnson gets in the HOF in his first year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I will vote for him, but I am only one voter. I had a chance to talk to Mark at the presser yesterday in DC. Was great to see him. He is very appreciative of being on the ballot and certainly hopes he will be voted in. To me, he had as much pure talent as anyone. A master boxer with solid power. It is just so unfortunate that none of the other top little guys of his time faced him -- Romero, Tapia, Carbajal, Lopez. I would have loved those fights.

Stronzo (San Jose)

Is GBP still planning on a 147 tournament??

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

They hoped to put one together. Richard Schaefer floated it out there when he signed Alexander, but I just dont see it happening. I dont see the point and I dont think HBO would get behind something like that. They can just make some good welter fights. You dont make a tourney when the top 2-3 guys are clearly not a part of it.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats up Dan, a lot of boxing news, but Im so pumped because my work is sending me to training to Syracuse NY in Dec, so I research whats aound there and the boxing hall of fame in Cannatoga is like 20 min away. Im so excited.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

If you have never been, definitely worth a stop. It's not very big but totally worth going for a couple of hours if that. When I used to cover high school and college sports in upstate NY I would often have to drive from Saratoga or Binghamton to places like Syracuse or Rochester or Buffalo for state playoff games or college games. I often would stop at the HOF, which is right off the highway, on my way to or from just to check things out sometimes.

Carmen (Joplin, MO)

Hey Dan The Man! Loved your Hagler-Leonard Oral History from a couple weeks ago, amazing stuff. How long did it take you to write that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Thanks, but I didnt write it. Eric Raskin did.

kyon (st. louis)

When Gamboa moves to 130, do you see any fighter giving him a legit challenge?

130 is desolate although a kid like Broner has speed and power too and could give him a test.

Dan (New Jersey)

Dan, have you sensed any excitement in the media about Grzegorz Proksa? I know he was playing to a European market but he made a huge statement against Sylvester and is really fun to watch, so I thought maybe he'd have more buzz coming off the dominating win.

99% of the boxing media didnt see the fight I would bet and has no idea who he is.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Dan, loved War and Peace. How long did that take you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

LOL.

Brian

How big would the upset be if Mormeck won, would it to Rahman/Lewis.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Would be bigger in my opinion.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, do you see the winner of Cotto - Margarito as a realistic possibility to fight Mayweather next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I would say pretty doubtful.

Skeelo (Del City)

What's up with Paul Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Nothing at the moment. He won't fight the rest of this year.

What did you think of the Arturo Gatti banner hanging from Boardwalk Hall?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I didnt get a chance to actually see it, but I heard they had one there and it is appropriate.

The Met (T.O.)

How do you feel about this obnoxious wave of boxers feuding over Twitter? It is what it is, but come on!

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It is sometimes amusing, sometimes stupid.

David (NY, NY)

Dan, what do you see next for Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

I don't know but I hope a rematch with Berto.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Do you think James Toney has a chace to win in Russia?

Dan Rafael
