Putting aside Gary Patterson's little snit, after hanging on to beat the froggies, where do you see the ceiling for SMU in terms of wins and bowls?
Well Gary's snit has nothing to do with anything. I think with June Jones running the ship, SMU should be in the class of "next BCS busters." If he did it at Hawaii, he can do it at SMU.
TCU @ San Diego State: Will a win against the Frogs vault SDSU into the top 25? What do you make of the Frogs' 2011 defense, and how do you see this game playing out from a national media perspective? Is it a big game or just another non-AQ contest?
No I do not think this win vaults SDSU into the Top 25. TCU is no longer ranked, and SDSU took a bad loss at Michigan. From a national perspective, it would be a lot bigger if TCU did not look so terrible this year.
With the possibility that Air Force might be going to the Big East, and the possibility of the other conferences poaching each other, do you see the MWC making a move as well or staying put with the remaining members?
I don't think the MWC can do anything until the other conferences shake out because it's not in a position of power. You have seen the stories about a possible merger with CUSA, and that would seem to be the most logical possibility if both leagues want to shore themselves up.
If the Houston Cougars win-out, what is the highest they will get in the rankings with their weak schedule?
I think that all depends on what happens with everyone else. My guess would be somewhere in the Top 12.
Who does NV start at QB in the Battle of the Fremont Cannon?Second question: does it even matter?
Well it sounded as if Chris Ault was not pleased with Fajardo last week. I will guess Lantrip, and no, I do not think it will matter. But Nevada could turn the ball over 6 times and then it is a different story.
When Utah State lost to Auburn thanks to that late onside kick, everybody thought it was bad luck. Same thing with the late botched punt that helped Colorado State beat the Aggies. OK, now that Utah State has again lost a game where it led the entire way (at BYU), is it time to admit that the Aggies just aren't that good?
What is that old saying, you are what your record is? I feel for Utah State, I really do, but you have to learn how to finish games. Maybe it is because the Aggies have not been in those types of situations before in so many games in one season. But I hope coach Andersen is really stressing "finishing" to his guys.
After seeing Boise State's offensive woes (inconsistent running game, no deep threat receivers), do you see them being a legitimate BCS bowl contender? How do you see them stacking up against some other top-10 teams out there?
Well I said at the beginning of the year I was not sure Boise would make a BCS game this year because I had a few concerns, namely the deep passing game and having to replace a lot of good players in the secondary. AT this point in the season, I think last year's team was better than this year's. BUT Boise could run the table and make it to a BCS game. There are some tough games left on the schedule, and I wouldn't be surprised if Boise lost one. But getting Boldewijn back should help the deep passing game.
Andrea, you've now picked Fresno State to beat Cal and Ole Miss... and the Bulldogs lost both by double digits and looked pretty bad in both games, especially on defense. What is up with the Bulldogs this year?
Maybe I should stop picking Fresno. Are we ever going to get to talk about this team playing WELL on defense? I fear for 'em on Friday night given their recent history vs. Boise.
Presuming Boise State doesn't get into the top 2, does it matter where they're ranked so long as they're ahead of the Big East champ? At all?
Why would it matter if they are head of the Big East champ? IT does not matter, period, as long as they are the highest ranked non-AQ team and in the Top 12 of the BCS standings.
How bad does Temple's loss to Toledo hurt?
It obviously hurts badly. MAC loss is huge.
Any chance Boise State is regretting moving to the MWC right now?
As opposed to what, staying in the WAC?
If you had the decision, would you play Heaps or Nelson this Saturday for BYU?
I think I would go with Nelson. I am all for giving your starting QB as many opportunities as possible, but Heaps has struggled so badly this year. I would want to see how Nelson handles the starting job again. He looked extremely motivated last week.
Andrea, here is a great question to start today's chat: lets just assume that the SEC champ is in the Title game, whether that be LSU or Alabama and whether they are undefeated or have one loss. If BSU is there at the end of the year at 12-0 why not give them a shot at taking out the SEC champ? We've had five years in a row and the Big-10, Pac-10 and Big-12 have all had at least one shot and have come up short. No Big East team is going to finish ahead of Boise and I think the MWC matches up very similarly to the ACC. So, why not see what Boise can do as opposed to picking apart their schedule that is, at least in part, a product of big-time programs not wanted to schedule them?
Well it's not up to us to decide that, it's about the BCS system unfortunately. So it's not like folks can say we'll let's give this a try.
Guess I should've put some context to my earlier question: Is Boise regretting moving to the MWC now that all of the conferences seem to be playing Pick Up Sticks with non-AQ schools right now?
It doesn't matter. Conference affiliation for Boise right now is beside the point. The MWC is far better than the WAC. That is not the deterrent.
For most of the BYU-Utah St. game, it wasn't just Jake Heaps who was struggling on BYU's offense. Lots of dropped passes, missed blocks, etc. When Riley Nelson came in at QB, everybody seemed to get a lot better. Players were making catches that were much more difficult than ones they dropped earlier, there was better blocking, etc. So why on earth is there even a QB controversy, if Riley makes everybody around him better while Jake has the opposite effect?
It was interesting how the team seemed to play harder. Bronco Mendenhall was asked about that during his press conference and he said he didn't think it was the case, but he's not going to throw Jake under the bus. That's not his style. But I do agree with you. I think Nelson should start.
Do you see Wyoming being competitive in the MWC this year with the flashes of talent (young qb and wideouts they have?). What are your thoughts on a top 4 finish for them?
I still think Top 4 is going to be tough with Boise State, AFA, TCU and SDSU. Maybe at No. 5. I really thought Colorado State would be better this year. But that was a really bad loss last week, and they were lucky to beat Utah State.
Do you think Pat Hill survives this season or do you think he will be fired? The fans seem to have spoken if 14,000 tickets are still available 48 hours before the Boise State game.
I wish I knew the answer to that. Fans have been disenchanted with him for a few years now. The question is who does Fresno State bring in? They really can't afford to pay top dollar for a coach.
Alotta expansion talk out here. What do you think the odds are boise state goes to the big 12
What chances do you give BSU of making to the NCG this year? What about the next 5 years, given all the conference expansion? Do these questions even matter, is there no realistic shot?
None of this is in Boise's control so I can't really put a number on it. A lot of teams have to lose for that to happen.
Watching Fresno/OM on Saturday I saw a lot of bad communication between Derek Carr and the sidelines. Is that on Carr or the coaches? Any chance the coaches will let Carr run the offense his way and see what happens?
I think it has to fall a little on both. But I am not sure the coaches are just going to turn the calls over to a guy who has started, what 4 or 5 career games?
I enjoy your non-AQ coverage. Imagine this scenario: a non-AQ team like, say, Wyoming begins the year 4-0 by beating Marshall, Arkansas State, Appalachian State and East Carolina ... then gets blown out at home by the only ranked team it plays. Do you think Wyoming would be ranked 17th in the coaches' poll in that scenario? Because that's exactly what Virginia Tech has done this season with those credentials.
Kevin, you know there are different rules for non-AQs!
Garrett Gilbert visited SMU's campus today- think he is interested in taking his talents to the Metroplex?
Do you want him after watching him run Texas' offense?
Is it possible for the NCAA or MWC officials to just force New Mexico to drop down to FCS status?
No. I do not think you can force a school to do that.
How will Miami fare vs Army? Should they have Dysert try to air it out? How should the Miami D(best in the MAC) posture itself to stop army?
Trying to defend the option is never easy, and they have got to make sure they tackle well to bring down Steelman and Hassin on first contact. Army is actually pretty good against the pass. Miami just has to find a way to get things going on offense, which has been a struggle this year. I am not quite sure what is going on when they ended last season so well, but Dysert-Harwell could work to open this up early on this game.
Does the fact that Missouri is leaving the Big 12 effect BYU's decision on weather or not to join the league?
Well we don't know if Missouri is leaving. But I think as long as Texas and Oklahoma are committed to the league, the Big 12 will survive. That is all the Big 12 needs to survive.
What's a storyline among the non-AQs that isn't getting nearly the attention it should?
How about the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns at 4-1!
Who wins this weekend, USM or Navy?
This is a tough one for me. I like both teams -- as you guys know I have So Miss winning CUSA East. I think Navy will be able to bounce back and win.
Who are your favorites in the MAC right now?
Ohio and Toledo/W Michigan.
Andrea, other than LSU and Alabama, which teams with one loss do you think would have a realistic chance of going to the Title game over a 12-0 Boise State. Hopefully not Oregon, based on recent history (and the fact that it might be a rematch with LSU), hopefully not Wisconsin with their pathetic schedule. I don't see a Big East or ACC team with one loss having much of a claim. So, are we just talking about a big-12 champ at 12-1 then?
Probably depends on when that team loses. If Oklahoma loses this weekend but then runs the table, that certainly could happen because they are losing at this point in the season and would have time to creep back up there. If they lose in Week 12, then obviously that is not going to happen. Too many variables to know right now.
Why does Nebraska and Wisconsin play teams like Fresno and Wyoming but they won't play BSU?
I think you know the answer to that one.
Marshall @ UCF who do you like and do you think this will be an ugly defensive game or will we see some points?
Well UCF has not played pretty football the last few weeks has it? I still like UCF to win, but I do not expect a lot of offensive fireworks. I mean Marshall is averaging 14 pts a game.
Kellen Moore has had the knee brace on for two straight weeks after tweaking his leg in the Toledo game. Cause for concern of overabundance of caution?
Anytime your starting QB has to wear a knee brace after "tweaking" a leg, there is cause for concern, at least in my book. He did not look like his usual self last week.
Houston Cougars at home Vs. ECU who'w your pick?
Houston. But Houston never makes it easy!
I'm crying FOUL!!! Or maybe I'm just crying...
What would you do if your team played D that way?
In defense of Va Tech, they've got credibility in the bank based on years of being good that Wyoming doesn't have. We say that only this year matters, but that isn't really the case. Factors such as how good you were last year, how many you bring back, how often you've proven you can reload...these things matter. Boise State didn't usually get the benefit of the doubt in preseason rankings in their first years of being good. Va Tech has been the best of their AQ conference pretty consistently for quite a while now.
You are absolutely right, and that also is a reason why a team like TCU, for example, stayed ranked after losing to Baylor. TCU has built up equity. And obviously, so has Boise.
So, who is your pick? Cardiac Cowboys of Wyoming or the Apoplectic Aggies of Utah State?
Ooh I like that catch phrase! I am going to go with Utah State, although I am worried the Aggies will lose the game in the final minute. They have played well enough to win all their games. Wyoming is playing well, too, but Utah State has got to win one of these close games at some point this year.
TCU's defense is full of holes this year, no pass rush, so-so linebacker play, and a terrible secondary, combined with all the slow starts offensively. How many losses are the Frogs looking at? 7-5, 6-6?
Well I think we need to put the brakes on 6-6. Who exactly is TCU losing to, New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming and Colorado State? I don't think so. I said 10-2 before the year. I was off on that. I say 8-4 right now.
Do you think BYU will get an invite to the Big 12 and do you think if they accept it that will stabilize the league?
I think the league is stable as long as Texas and Oklahoma are in the fold. So BYU joining rounds out the league but I don't think it makes or breaks whether the league survives.
Do you think TCU will end up honoring their move to the Big East, sticking with the MWC, or getting into the Big 12?
I am still saying Big East. But ask me again tomorrow ;)
Why isn't the Big 12 going after the best from C-USA and MWC? We need to get back to 12.
Why does the Big 12 have to get back to 12?
How come Miami hasn't turned the keys over to Austin Boucher?
I was wondering that myself. I really was impressed with him when he took over last season. If I remember correctly, Miami was ho-hum on offense with Dysert last year and much better with Dysert at the end of the year.
I mean Boucher at the end of the year.
Wouldn't a Ohio/Ohio State Motor City Bowl (or whatever it's called now...Little Caesers is it?) be dreamy!?
Dreamy for ... ?
Andrea, do you think Fresno State will go to a bowl game this year? I predict losses to Boise State, Utah State, San Diego State, and possibly Louisiana Tech. That would leave them on the outside looking in...
I don't think Fresno loses to Utah State and La Tech. Nevada hasn't looked that stellar, either. But I don't think it is going to be easy to get there.
Andrea, think Air Force has a chance to sneak out a win at Notre Dame? They have been playing well other than the second half collapse and near loss to Navy.
I do think Air Force has a chance to sneak out a win. Tim Jefferson is great, and ND has had problems with Navy. They run different styles of offenses, yes, but the amount AFA runs always presents problems.
How surprised were you that San Jose State picked a win at Colorado State last Saturday? It may seem like no big deal nationally but it was a huge win for the Spartans.
I was surprised, but I will say that I truly believed San Jose State would be better this season. I did not have the Spartans in my bottom 10 this year. Still, I thought Colorado State would be better.
Why aren't BYU coaches acting a little more concerned with the lack of motivation? It is sickening to watch them do nothing on the sidelines after a bad play/series/quarter
What do you want them to do, yell and scream and throw headsets? They are coaching the best way they know how, though it would be nice to see a few more in-game adjustments.
How do you see TCU faring next year in an AQ conference? They lose almost no talent on either side of the ball and will be hungry coming off of what looks to be a disappointing 2011 season.
Depends. How much better are the players going to be on D? And they lose Tank Carder, right? I thought TCU would be able to march into the BE and win, but now I am not so sure. I have never seen a G Patterson defense play this way.
Since only one school has come out and said it wants into the BE is it really that bad of a conference to want into? Wouldn't it still be a step up for most any Non-AQ school?
Just because only one has come out and said it doesn't mean there is only 1 school interested. I think there is uncertainty about what the BE is going to look like and whether it will retain its AQ status.
If Ohio State keeps slumping (be it on the field or in the media...) can the other Ohio schools capitalize on the recruiting front? I'd much rather play for Frank Solich than Luke Fickell but I'm biased.
I think other AQ schools stand to benefit, most notably Michigan and some of the other Big Ten schools, maybe even Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The MAC schools would be secondary.
Is SMU that good, or is TCU that overrated?
Well that game did go into OT. Not as if it was a blowout win or anything. I think SMU is good, and TCU is struggling. That is how I would characterize the win.
Is ECU's scheduling philosophy helping or hurting them? They're not getting much love being 1-3 despite losing to South Carolina, V-Tech, and UNC.
And if they were 4-0 playing that schedule? It is a high risk, high reward philosophy.
Does Brett Smith look better than Austyn Carta-Samuels did last season? Also, does Brett Smith win the MWC Frosh of the year?
Yes, he looks better than ACS. Look at the results so far. Too early to tell on Frosh of the Year, but he certainly is a candidate.
That is exactly what i want to see. I want to see them getting into their players faces and pumping them up. Obviously not dropping F bombs and hitting them with headsets, but I always got more motivated when the coaches let me know that I was not playing well and that i was not slipping under their radar
Well not every player gets jacked up with that style, right? I am sure they are doing the best job they can.
Hi Andrea,How come San Diego State doesn't get more looks from conferences looking to add members? They have a stellar basketball program, a football team on the rise, and last I checked, the school resides in San Diego, CALIFORNIA!
Who do you want to add San Diego State? The Big 12? That is not going to happen.
If Case Keenum breaks the records he's supposed to break and leads UH to an undefeated season, what will his Heisman chances look like?
I don't know that he wins the Heisman, but I would hope that he gets into the conversation. Because he's not there right now.
Nebraska and Wisconsin don't schedule Boise St because of that huge price tag Boise thinks they need. Step up and play without asking for a ridiculous amount of money. You only pay the teams that you should beat 99.9% of the time. Boise St is a huge risk to any school.
So why is that fair to Boise State, not to get the same payday as everybody else? Are you going to pay their bills without guaranteed money for a road game?
do you think under leadership of fairchild and there top QB Recruit PHil Thomas CSU can make them self a ligit contender in hte MWC
Great question. Losing San Jose State does not make you a legit contender, that is for sure.
Andrea, who are your top 5 Heisman candidates right now?
I've got Luck, Moore, Denard Robinson, Russell Wilson and Landry Jones.
OK guys and gals, thanks for joining me today. See you again next week.
