Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:00 PM)

What's up? I'm in the press box at The Trop, watching the Rangers take BP and listening to my eclectic blend on my iPod....Let's roll

PL (SC)

I know, I know, you hit it on the head last week about the boyz, but do you see anyway they fix the problems and make it to the playoffs??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

lol...the problem is the Cowboys are an average team. They have some good players and they play really hard for 60 minutes, so they'll always be in the game - that's why they've played 11 straight decided by a FG. But they make a lot of mistakes and they have some young guys learning on the fly. Plus, there have been so many injuries the Cowboys haven't really been able to put out the team they want on the field for a single game. Think about it, Dez and Miles have yet to play in the same game

Gary (Los Feliz)

Why is Garrett not getting his share of the heat for this latest tank job? As the O.C., he got to call a better game(run the ball more) and manage his reckless QB much better!! Didn't he learn anything backing up behind Troy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

It's not really about the play calls. You can't simply line up and run the ball every single play. After the first interception, Garrett called running plays on five of the first six plays. On third-and-2, he called a pass play and Robinson failed to keep the DB from getting inside of him and it was intercepted and returned for a TD. Where Garrett must do a better job is continuing to stay in Romo's ear about situational football and understanding game management because he's awful at that aspect of the game

Todd (Anchorage)

JJT - every QB with a playmaking receiver gives him a chance to make plays even if he's covered (Stafford-CJ, Kolb-Fitz, Schaub-Johnson). Why does Romo refuse to go to Dez in crunch time when we need a play? He doesn't even give him a look it seems. Frustrating-

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

Romo has proved he'll spread the ball around. I mean Laurent Robinson had a 100-yard day on Sunday and he's just been here a couple of weeks. He tried to get Dez the ball in the final minute against the Jets and look what happened. He tried to get the ball to Dez on the pass Bobby Carpenter intercepted.

Todd (Anchorage)

Did Rob Ryan purposely line up Newman one-on-one with CJ on the last Detroit TD? 6 inch height advantage with no safety help?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

Sorry, Rob doesn't talk until Fridays and I missed him after the game because I was talking to Jerry, Romo and Garrett. I'll see if I can find an answer from Calvin Watkins or Todd Archer this week. Then again, Johnson caught a pass in triple coverage earlier, so maybe it wouldn't have mattered.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How do could the Dallas Cowboys be ahead 27-3 & lose the Game against the Detroit Lions?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Dumb decision after dumb decision after dumb decision. Losing a 27-3 lead in the first half would've been shocking, but not incomprehensible. Losing a 27-3 lead in the second half is incomprehensible

Tyler (Athens, GA)

Do you think Tony Romo is hugely overrated?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

No. He's an outstanding talent. He can make throws other quarterbacks can't make. But he has a disconnect when it comes to decision-making. That's what holds him back. At 31, I don't see how he could change. Maybe, he'll surprise us

Nathan (Marshall)

Im sure there are a multitude of Romo questions comming your way, so here's another one. I have been a strong Romo supporter over the last several years, but now I have nothing to say when people complain about Romo. Will the Cowboys use a 1st round pick to draft a QB next year, or look to free agency, or will we tough it out with Romo? Give me some hope of a future please.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

I would strongly consider using a first- or second-round pick on a quarterback capable of eventually being a starter. If Romo didn't like it, then too bad. He hasn't earned the right to complain. Besides, Garrett has talked endlessly about having competition throughout the roster. More important, Romo's contract has about two more "real" years left on it after this season. The Cowboys should not put themselves in a position where Romo has been a starter for seven seasons, has one or two playoff wins and they feel compelled to re-sign him because they don't have another viable option. Stephen McGee might be a good backup, but he's not a starter.

jw (nj)

ok is it dez's conditioning or romo and garretts lack of wanting to get dez the ball thats limiting his targets. this guy is great he needs the ball more! hope you have an answer cause you watch the game film.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

It's a tough problem for the Cowboys. Dez can't practice because he's playing in the games and he needs the week to recover because his quad has a deep bruise. If he practiced, he probably couldn't play. With two weeks off, hopefully, he can get enough rest and treatment to practice and play against the Patriots.

Mike (San Diego)

JJT, Tony Romo is in post-season form...odds that the Cowboys make the post-season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

i said from the start, I thought they'd be 8-8. I think they're rebuilding this season. They're re-building the roster. Their psyche. Their organization. to me, they're on pace. Don't tell me about they should be 4-0 or 3-1. The Cowboys are simply doing what average teams do. They make mistakes at critical times.

Godwin Johnson (Prosper,Tx)

Hello Mr.Taylor,I am curious to know just how much does Romo and the center actually work on the ball exchanges during the course of the practice week?I mean, what happened in the Monday night game was horrific yet something expected from a pop warner team in week 3.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

they fixed their issue this week. No poor snaps.

Mike (over there)

Who would the rangers rather play in the ALCS. Yanks or Tigers?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

I think they'd rather see the Yankees because Verlander is better than C.C., and they beat the Yankees in the ALCS last season. They have no fear of the Bronx Bombers. For whatever reason, they've struggled in Detroit.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

As a Cowboys fan, I myself know how crazy this sounds - but according to power-ranking algorithm I developed last year, the Cowboys are still the best of the NFC East teams (8th best in the league; Redskins 10th, Giants 14th, Eagles 25th). They've beaten the 49ers (now 3-1) and Redskins (now 3-1) and lost to the Lions (4-0). While that doesn't tell the whole story, I think there's reason to be optimistic about this team going forward, don't you?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

Maybe, you need to come up with a new formula. The game is about more than stats. It's about intangibles, which don't come up in a formula

Tim (Little Rock, AR)

JJT, do you cuss like Samuel Jackson? For some reason I envision you getting pissed at some of the comments when I read your responses

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

Nope. I just try to keep it real. No more, no less. Listen to love songs, while I do the chat. It keeps me mellow.

Jay (PA)

Will Laurent Robinson be a flash in the pan or does he have the makings of a good #3? Don't want to overreact to one game, but I'm thrilled with his play as essentially a #2 that game.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

You should never overeact to one game. He's been cut from the Rams and the Chargers in the last year, so it's not like he's Jerry Rice. He also failed to get inside the DB on the second interception return for a TD. That said, he seems to have found a niche in the offense and the Cowboys will use him. He might be a nice No.3.

Adam (Virginia)

Do you really think that this team is average considering we have'nt played a game yet with all 3 of the starting DBs on the field nor our top 2 WRs and all of this on top of romo playing hurt. I'm thinking when they get healthy after the bye this team will be above average

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

I don't deal in the hypothetical. I deal in reality. Every team has injuries. The Cowboys are the epitome of average and have been for years. Maybe, they'll be better when everyone is healthy. We'll see.

Jay (PA)

How do you think Bruce Carter will do for the defense? I'm concerned that we will need to draft another MLB because even if Carter does well, Brooking won't be here long and James is not having a James' type of season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

No idea. There weren't any minicamps or OTAs to judge him. Low expectations, if we see him this season

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

What's your assessment of the defense? In my opinion, they have played good enough to win every ballgame. that's seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel. if the offense can stop committing turnover.s

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

I could see that, but they couldn't make a play in the fourth quarter when it mattered. The offense put them in a horrible bind, but there's no law on the books that says they couldn't have made a game-changing play. It's not their fault, but they didn't stop the disaster from occurring when they had a chance to do so

Jay (PA)

Do the Cowboys have enough in place to draft a QB early (1st or 2nd round) and pull an Aaron Rodgers? I know Romo is going nowhere in the next couple years, but drafting someone early may be a major benefit in several respects.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

As I said earlier, I think it's something they should look seriously at doing

jw (nj)

it seems like your actually rooting for the cowboys to be mediocre and sway things that way to make sure your right

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

I don't have any emotional attachment to the Cowboys. They win, they lose, it matters not to me. I simply write my opinion on why they're winning or losing or why someone like Sean Lee is playing well or why someone like Romo is not.

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

do you think my alma mater has a chance of beating the sooners this weekend?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

yes they have a chance. Will they? No. Sooners 31-14

Chris (Earth)

JJT, based on your earlier response where would you rank the Cowboys in the NFC East? I could see behind the Giants at this point, but that's it. I'm not holding my breath but still think they have a decent shot at the division.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:32 PM)

NYG: ConsistentWASH: On the risePHIL: Trying to gelDAL: Consistently inconsistent

kyle (prosper)

mr taylor ,you're my role model. how can i grow up to be just like you?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

Drink plenty of milk, let an Olympian (MIchael Johnson) cut your grass and go to The Ohio State University. Oh, don't forget to pray for grace and mercy every day.

Joe (The Netherlands)

JJT people seem to forget that all QB's make mistakes even Tom Brady. Besides the 2 games against NY and Detroit name at least 2 times where Tony has lost a game. If you count Seattle then you have no idea what your talking about because Tony brought back the team after Glenn fumbled in the endzone. If you say Giants all I have to say is Crayton...so give me some evidence to what your saying.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

When Tony is better than 1-3 in the playoffs, come holla at your boy

Stan (Sacramento CA)

Hiya Jacques! I been telling people maybe we ought to start thinking of doing a Herschel Walker type trade with Romo - Get along with Kitna till we groom someone that manages games a little more steadily - I think the world of Tony, but his style of play and results are causing gray hairs - Maybe a change of scenery will help his career - You even said the Cowboys in a rebuilding year......

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

Why would someone do that? The Herschel Walker trade ain't happening again. Ever.

Jack (Smackwater)

Are you one of the experts counting Philly out. 1-3 means failure, right?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

Philly is trying to gel. They have a track record of excellence that Dallas doesn't. That said, I thought it was awfully arrogant to move Juan Castillo from OL coach to DC. The problem with that move is because he doesn't have a track record, the players lose faith when his moves don't work because he can't point to a time when they did.

David (Devils Lake, ND)

Romo is horrible at managing a game, it's his decision making. Also, some is on coaches for play calling but there are check downs in all pass routes.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

Do you think the defense is only going to get stronger? With Scandrick coming back and few other injured players, the defense might be carrying this team in December.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

They'll get better the more they play in the scheme and as they get Hatcher and Scandrick back and add Bruce Carter to the mix here and there

Jay (PA)

I wasn't able to see the game... how did Free look after struggling for two weeks?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

just got through first quarter this AM...Been busy with the Rangers. I don't have an answer right now. Sorry.

Dustin (NC)

1-3 hard to win a playoff game win the Oline couldnt block.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

if you like Romo, fine. If you love him, even better. But quit making excuses for him. He's played a lot of great games and he's screwed up quite a few. Bottom line, he's 3-7 in last 10 starts

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

just curious on your take of Dirk's tweet regarding Romo.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

nice gesture. Do different scenarios, to me. Dirk's criticism came when he was 27-28 in his prime. He still had time to change his game, and he did in 2007 against the Hornets. I don't know that Romo can change his decision-making process. Maybe, he'll prove me wrong like Dirk did.

Joe (The Netherlands)

Just proved my point for me...way to show you don't have a clue. Hater!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

Hater indicates jealousy. I have no jealousy toward Romo. Just look at ALL the columns I've written about him. I consistently call him a Top 10 QB and talent. It's not my fault he throws dumb interceptions regularly - not all the time - with the game on the line. Be mad at Romo.

fernando (dallas)

how good is the chance miles plays @ new england?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

yes, the extra two weeks off will do him well. better safe than sorry with a hamstring.

Dustin (NC)

On 3rd and 2 and leading a game, YOU DONT GO INTO SHOTGUN FORMATION. You run the freaking ball.....

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

not if you can't run it. Did you see the fourth-and-1 play. This line struggles to get push in short-yardage situations. It's built for quickness and blocking in space - not power

Chris (Earth)

So you are saying that Dallas is the worst team in their division, correct? You know that you take at least a little pleasure in their loss so you can use it to support your "reality." C'mon man admit it. I don't think the Cowboys are the best either so don't say I'm a delusional fan.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

They have the worst record and Philly has more talent. Is that really so hard for you to admit? Two weeks from now, it could be different. Things are fluid in the league. What's true today might not be true a month from now.I don't expect Philly to struggle all year.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

Gotta cut it a little short this week, so I can get ready for the Rays-Rangers in 15 minutes. I'll see y'all next Tuesday. Yes, Dustin and Chris that includes you. Intelligent people can disagree. It ain't the end of the world. Peace.
