Chat with Andrew Marchand

Dave (Jacksonville, FL)

Any chance of rain in the forecast?:)

Andrew Marchand
  (11:59 AM)

Let's start there everyone. Thankfully no.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the New York Yankees will beat the Texas Rangers & Advance to the 2011 World Series?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:00 PM)

Chris:Let's start there. I think that the Yankees will win tonight. Nova will not be overwhelmed by the circumstances and the Robertson and Mo are rested. If they get there, I think the Yankees will lose to the Rangers.

Aaron (Chicago)

If the Yankees move on will Aj Burnette Pitch?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:02 PM)

Definitely. He would have even if he hadn't had the good game the other day. The emerging question is if A.J. gets two games in the ALCS. I know that is hard to believe, but that is where the Yankees have to stand. Do you start A.J. in Game 2 over Freddy Garcia. Personally, I would go with Freddy, but I do think they will think about it.

Timmy (New York, NY)

Watching the playoffs this year, Yankees have a legit shot to win it all as anyone despite the critisim from writers and "experts" Philly's pitching hasn't been great as expected and their offense is dismal, no team has the Yankees bullpen and only texas can match them offensively and they will get knocked out by the Yankees in the ALCS. Your thoughts?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:03 PM)

We(experts) don't know much. Seriously, more times than not the pre-season or game analysis ends up having nothing to do with what happens. It is not that my cohorts and I don't do are jobs well, but it is function of the reason the stuff is interesting is because we don't know what will happen. You, me, the players, everyone.

Tim O'Brien (Toms River, NJ)

I see a lot of people are giving us that advantage tonight which is great, but I do believe it is closer than it seems. Pfister pitched well down the stretch and we need to start hitting. Hopefully Tuesday night was a sign that we got our spark back. What do you think?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:05 PM)

I think some trap thinking is that one game has a lot to do with the next.Nova pitched better than Pfister last time out. That doesn't mean it can't change.I think Nova will pitch well tonight, but isn't he due for a poor outing?

Ed (NY)

Is Leyland sandbagging on Verlander not being available tonight?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:05 PM)

Leyland might be.It would not shock me to see Verlander, but Leyland has been pretty public in saying he would not risk Verlander's arm even for a shot at the ALCS.

Jake (Yorktown)

Why don't the Yankees just start this kid Montero. I'm not a guy to watch minor league ball much but this kid seems like the real deal at the plate and looks alot better up there then Teixeira. Even the Red Sox int. walked him later in the season. Thoughts?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:07 PM)

Next year, he will play a lot. Mostly as the DH, but some as the backup catcher. If the Yankees go to the ALCS, Montero will DH a lot against Texas' lefties.

Greg (Manhatta)

This game is has to heavily favor the Yankees. Nova-Sabathia-Hughes-Soriano-Robertson-Rivera. There is no way Tigers could handle that right?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:08 PM)

They can, but I think it favors the Yankees.Plus, I know Valverde is 50-for-50, but I don't trust him late. He has been shaky so far in this series.

Mark (Seattle)

We here in Seattle are crying, every game I see Montero hit is another day I cry in my coffee for not getting him when we could. Kid has all the makings of a star

Andrew Marchand
  (12:09 PM)

Right now, it looks as if the Mariners messed up on that deal. Can't fully judge it yet. But looks like they got it wrong, at the moment

Frank Revojevoski (Trenton)

You think the Yankees will start "the new core four" next season, Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Nova?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:10 PM)

I think we are a long way from that.First off, Manny B. and Dellin B. probably won't be ready until mid-year, if then. Montero and Nova could be keepers for a long time.

Trevor (New York)

For everyone that bashes Nova and still questions his ability, He's been the Yankees best pitcher the last two months of the season isn't this what you want on the mound in a deciding game? Kid just has the poise and make-up to handle these situations right?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:11 PM)

Agreed. I don't think anyone bashes him.He is a smart kid. The only weird is that A.J. Burnett has been mentor.

Kevin (Albany)

It looks like Arod is increasingly getting his timing and swing back into form with every at bat, do you think he will have a big game tonight? and if they move on to the ALCS, there too?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:12 PM)

That could be the difference between misery and a parade for the Yankees. With how Cano looks, if A-Rod gets hot the Yankees could be in business.

Rob (NY)

With Teixeira looking awful like he does every postseason, why not let Posada play 1st and have Montero DH and Tex can come in later for defensive replacement. No production is not gonna get this team anywhere. Thoughts?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:13 PM)

There is no way you can do that.I agree Teixeira can't hit in the post-season. The better pitching owns him. However, his glove is very valuable so this not an option.

jim (philly)

who will win in the world series. philliesvs yankees. phillies vs tigers

Andrew Marchand
  (12:14 PM)

I'd probably take the Phillies over everyone

Shawn (DC)

Lets talk about redemption, amazing that two guys in Brandon Inge and AJ Burnett who have been criticized and pretty much cast aside have had huge impacts on the series to date.

Andrew Marchand
  (12:15 PM)

Yes, but A.J. earned all his criticism. He's been terrible for two years. If Granderson doesn't make two great catches, Burnett's NY career might be over.

Tim O'Brien (Toms River, NJ)

A lot of people are giving the Yankees a huge edge tonight and I love it being a Yankee fan, but bottom line is we need to hit tonight. Pfister was very impressive down the stretch and Nova is still a rook regardless of numbers. Arod and Tex need to find it again and hopefully Tuesday night was a sign that our spark is back. What do you think?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:16 PM)

The Tigers could win this game tonight. There is no doubt about it.

Joe (Flushing, NY)

what makes you say that the Yankees will lose to Texas?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:18 PM)

I think Texas is better. Their pitching is better and their lineup is stronger right now. They are a younger team and I just think there is a fire to that club. We saw last year and, even without Cliff Lee, I think we would see it again.I've been wrong before.

Bobby (Austin, TX)

IF the Yankees in the closing innings find themselves in a situation where they outcome doesn't look good (which I hope is never the case) I hope the Yankee crowd is just as classy as it was in 2001 for Paul O'Neil and gives Jorge Posada the same treatment by chanting his name for all the great years he's given us.

Andrew Marchand
  (12:19 PM)

Bobby, good point about tonight. If the Yanks lose, this is probably Posada's last game on the team.

david (boston)

how many innings do you see nova pitching tonight, and will they let mo pitch two innings tonight

Andrew Marchand
  (12:20 PM)

Mo will pitch two innings, if needed.Nova will go until he gets in too much trouble. This will be a balancing act for Joe Girardi. Nova is very good at getting out of trouble so Giradi has to balance that with not letting the game get out of hand.

Steve (NYC)

When the Yanks are playing at their best, they clearly look like the most dangerous team in the playoffs...what do you think their chances are to win it all if they win tonight?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:22 PM)

I think they will lose to Texas. However, the definitely have what it takes to win it all. CC could take over a series and their offense can as well. The bullpen is where the Yankees have the advantage over everyone in the playffs.Ro-So-Mo is a lethal combination.

Bryan (Howard Beach)

Does Tex deserve to be batting where he is if we move on the the ALCS? Is there a chance Cahvez gets into the starting order this postseason?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:23 PM)

Good question. Probably not, but I doubt Girardi will make a change. The other thing is: Who would you move up? Maybe Montero, if he were playing. But Swisher has never hit much in the playoffs for some reason.

Robert (Louisville, KY)

Andrew, does Cashman come back as Yanks GM win or lose after this year?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:23 PM)

Yes.Randy Levine told me a week or two ago they want him back.I don't see that changing

Dave (Jacksonville, FL)

IF (and yes, I'm recognizing they haven't won anything yet) the Yankees win this series, it would be hard to fault people for picking the scalding hot Rangers. But isn't it relevant that the Yanks not only hit LHP, but tend to obliterate it? I mean Tex and Swish are different animals batting righty. Jeter has excellent splits, and you're likely to get another power bat in there with Montero. Wouldn't a Rangers-Yankees round #2 be a lot more 50-50 than the experts see it (as I presume the experts by and large would pick the Rangers).

Andrew Marchand
  (12:24 PM)

All excellent points.

Nick (Boston)

Why are there so many experts who are ride or die Philly? They have been far from lights out in the NLDS some serious rookie mistakes. Should have put the Cards out in game 4. Just don't see greatness from this team. I think any of the remaining 3 AL teams can wipe the floor with the Phills.

Andrew Marchand
  (12:26 PM)

Nick:You might be write. When I typed that earlier, I was thinking that I don't really know what is going on with that team. I'm not around them. It could be the Phils are team that looks good when you look at all their names, but in reality aren't that great.

Brittany (Los Angeles)

Whether the Yankees win or lose, this has been a fantastic series, great for baseball, no?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:26 PM)

This has been a fun one. No doubt about that. The other day was the most suspensed filled 10-1 game ever. Seriously.

Paul (trenton)

Maybe if they lose the Yankees lose they should build a new 2 billion dollar ballpark

Andrew Marchand
  (12:27 PM)

Maybe a roof. LOL.

Bob (Pittsburgh)

Why can't the Yankees move Gardner to the leadoff spot and drop everyone else in the order down one. To watch his at bats he is taking pitches and getting clutch hits. Shouldn't he get more AB's?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:27 PM)

This has gone on all year. Gardner looks good at the moment. But he seems to go back and forth.

R.J. (Wilkes-Barre, PA)

Looking to next year for a moment, where do the Yanks go for starting pitching? Do the Yanks try Garcia and Colon one last time to give the kids another 1/2 year - year to develop in the minors or do they take a run at a C.J. Wilson?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:28 PM)

I think they could go for Wilson if he is willing to take No. 2 money. I doubt they would give him an A.J. deal, but maybe just below that.I think Garcia could come back. Less likely on big Bart, but I don't think it is out of the realm.OK, last question. Who's got it?

Chris (NY, NY)

Does ARod get booed tonight?

Andrew Marchand
  (12:30 PM)

0-for-4 in a Yankee loss. That last at-bat, I would say yes. He is A-Rod. That's what happens.OK, enjoy the game, everyone. We will be chatting at ESPN.com during it and we will have you covered on ESPNNY.com and 1050 AM, as well as TV.Thanks for all the questions.
