Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning, gang. Another hour of fantasy chattage awaits us, so let's get right down to business. Second cup of coffee in hand, so call it in the air!

Missing Mario (NY)

Is it time for my owners to drop me and pickup Victor Cruz instead?

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

I don't think so. Cruz has had a few nice catches, but has also made some bad plays as well... Mario will be fine.

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

I don't think so. Cruz has had a few nice catches, but has also made some bad plays as well... Mario will be fine.

Chris (Arizona)

Willis McGahee is looking good early. Sell high or expect more of the same?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

I'd sell high, especially if the Broncos are going to turn to Tebow, because a Tim-led offense is not going to be reliable in terms of player usage, IMO.

Jason (Boston)

Any New Orleans WR's worth starting on a weekly basis?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

No reason to doubt Colston, as he's fine when healthy. Other than that, though, you're going to have to hope for a hot hand.

Jason (Boston)

Decker"s Value if Tebow becomes the starter?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Has to take a hit when Royal comes back, regardless of the QB, and certainly I'm not high on Tebow.

Mitch (Miami)

Thought on Garcon? He seems to be a favorite target, but can he keep this up?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

Sure. He may not score every week, but the targets are going to be there and if the Colts continue to trail late, you're going to see a lot of passing.

Bill (San Francisco)

Can Tim Tebow be a top 10 fantasy QB for the rest of the season?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Can't see that happening. I'd only be interested at all if the Broncos put Quinn and Tebow in the game at the same time and used Tim as a hybrid halfback/QB.

Derek (Detroit)

Rose are red, violets are blue, jackie battle is?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Interesting, and certainly higher on my list now than both McCluster and TJ, but not high enough to be a non-bye-week factor just yet.

Ben Roethlisberger (Pitt)

So, I'm back right?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Still a huge injury risk and it's not like we had 5 TD's and 450 yards... it was less than 250, and Pittsburgh was down to using Dwyer. Better than I thought, and obviously you start him most weeks, but still tons of reason for concern.

Matt "The Beast" Futch (Work)

3rd cup of coffee here, going to be a long day. Would you use the number 1 waiver priority on anyone this week?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Again, if you need, you take. People get so hung up on keeping No. 1 waiver priority "just in case" and often that case never arrives.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

*sigh* What to do with Percy Harvin?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Wish I knew. Frustrating the heck out of owners, but you just know there's a breakout game looming. I'll chalk up this past week to the big lead early...

Nick (Atlanta)

How can everyone say Tebow has limited value given that he had one of the highest scoring efforts considering minutes played. He also was the highest fantasy scorer in the final 3 contests last season.....just saying.

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Nick, it's about game-planning. Nobody is saying that Tebow has no talent at all. However, if the defense is prepping all week for Orton (stay in pocket, right-handed) and all of a sudden a scrambling southpaw comes in, that's a big adjustment to make on the fly.

Scott (Dallas)

Thoughts on the Blount injury? Should I pick up Earnest Graham just in case? Also, will Freeman be able to stop turning the ball over to keep either of them on the field.......

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

A snowball game - Freeman's not that bad, but sometimes you have games where nothing goes right. Graham has some value in a PPR, but if Blount can't go in Week 6, I'd try and avoid the Bucs backfield entirely.

JB (Georgia)

Who would you say will have the hotter hand for the rest of the season, Alex Smith or Andy Dalton? I dropped Kolb and feel better today.

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

I would rather have Dalton, because even though they are 4-1, I have problems believing this 49ers team is for real -- especially as the injuries continue to mount.

Chris (Law Office of BJGE)

Any confidence in using the Law Firm on a regular basis after yesterday or still a typical week to week thing with Coach B?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Always a week-to-week thing with Bill, but with Ridley not quite ready yet and Woodhead hurting, BJGE is as safe as he has ever been.

Jake (Philly)

Finley for Holmes? Fair?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I'd much rather have Finley, dropsies and all -- but it's not like it's a veto-worthy trade.

Michael (virginia)

Is kolb bad enough to hurt fitzgeralds value?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

No... Larry's fine - it's a question of TD's and those are hard to predict - but in terms of targets/catches/yards, Fitz is going to be up there.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Is Jimmy Graham a sell high candidate to you? Deal him and SJax for FJax and Daniels?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

Saints aren't going to suddenly stop passing... Graham isn't a sell-high. He's a top-5 TE. Period. Which is not to say your suggested deal might not work out for you, but I wouldn't call that trade a "sell-high".

scott (dallas)

what are the odds megatron hauls in 2 tds tonight?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

So far, he's batting 1.000 on that in 2011, but law of averages...

Trent (Miami)

Dropped Moreno mid game yesterday, and of course he then catches a screen pass for a TD! Please convince me I did the right thing, even if Tebow does take over. PPR, 14 teams.

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Take away the touchdown and ask me again... anyone can find the end zone once in a while. It's about touches and targets... don't have second thoughts on one play.

Charles (Boston)

I think fantasy players rarely sell high. You ride the wave because it's human nature. Then when the player gets injured or tanks, you wonder why you didn't "sell high".

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

I think people rarely use the term properly. "Sell high" is taking an overachiever and getting rid of him before he returns to normal. Most people use it on a guy they didn't think would be good in the first place, but without regard to the fact their original assessment might have been wrong. Otherwise, I agree with you.

Joe (WI)

Is Mike Williams South droppable at this point?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

Not in a PPR... the targets are there. I wish he were running the routes they are giving Benn, though.

Tedy (Boston)

Ryan Mathews how long will he be out?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Bye week to rest up...might be zero.

Josh (Cleveland)

Having Aaron Hernandez is pretty much like having NE's WR2 in your TE spot, right? Would you rather have him over Gronk the rest of the way?

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

I think there will continue to be Hernandez weeks and Gronk weeks and either guy is fine to have, though neither as "safe" as a Graham/Witten "all the catches" type.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Please enlighten us with a few examples of sell highs then, caffeinated sir...and is Fred Jackson one?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

No... a sell high is a guy like Denarious Moore or Victor Cruz... someone who got on the field due to injuries and who might not get the playing time as the "regulars" return... or a Scott Chandler, who scored twice early and may not see the end zone again...

Ed (Milwaukee)

Do you believe in Cassel and the Chiefs? Is Steve Breaston a worthwhile pickup?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Chiefs got off to such a slow start, but they'll have a bye and I think Breaston/Bowe can continue to get 4-6 catches a week.

Steve (LA)

It's hard to determine sell highs now because we don't know how the season will end. If an overachiever continues to produce, then he wouldn't be a sell high. If he flames out, then he's an obvious sell high.

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

No, that's where you're wrong... a sell high has nothing to do with how he ends up... it's about value at that time, and if you can trade Victor Cruz for say, Roddy White, and White does what we expect then it doesn't matter what Cruz does. It's about playing the percentages and getting a safer, more likely to be better player in the process.

Chris (Chicago)

What are your thoughts on Stafford? Will he end the season a top 5 QB?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

As long as he's upright, he's alright.

Bryce (Seattle)

MJD and Lloyd for Turner and Marshall... Which side do you want?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

No hesitation here- I want MJD side.

TJ (Indiana)

Down 22 points in a PPR league. Have Jahvid Best and Megatron. Do I win?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

When did I suddenly become Sylvia Browne?

Anthony (Cali)

Have we heard anything about Benson's suspension yet? I have an offer for him on the table.

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Nothing as of yet... frustrating, but I'd expect we'd get word before tomorrow.

Jay (Chicago)

Have to make a decision, Schaub or Ryan ROS. Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

I prefer Schaub.

Chip (NC)

Still a Dustin Keller believer?

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

Sure... had as many catches entering Week 5 as Finley... one game doesn't change my opinion.

Tom (MD)

Plaxico is droppable right? If not yesterday, when?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

He's not 85 droppable, but there are likely better options to be had.

Kevin (NY)

Would you rather have Cam or Ben ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

I'd rather have Cam... Ben's the better QB today, but I don't think he can survive a full schedule.

Tom (Calif)

Eli does not get enough love...with Cruz added to his list of receivers, he has turned in 3 very solid weeks of scoring. It is no longer a lock for me to sit him for Romo...is he a top 5 QB ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Eli's numbers look far worse because of Cruz' mistakes -- the tipped pass for a pick six, and a fumble on a key drive... Always was headed for a top-10 season.

Roy (Denver)

Hey Sylvia... Got Best, Stafford, Pettigrew, and the Lions D/ST... Down by 40. Do I win?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Future cloudy, ask again later.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

In a PPR, Matt Forte ends up a top ____ RB.

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Five.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Rather have Dez or DeSean?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Dez.

Stan (LA)

Who are some of your "untouchables" right now and you wouldn't trade no matter what the offer?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Nobody to me is an automatic untouchable. If I get value and can improve my team, then I make the trade. Obviously, though, with guys like Rodgers and Welker it's much harder to meet that criteria... but I'll still listen.

Eric (Tx)

David Nelson's outlook with the injury to D. Jones?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Don't think it improves all that much... it's Stevie and then a huge drop.

Matt (Work)

They should get someone less arrogant to do these chats!

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Any arrogance you're picking up is your own projection... I'm just voicing my opinion, and last time I checked, I was admitting that I'm not 100 percent right... How dare you sir!

Roy (Denver)

IT'S LATER NOW. Hey Sylvia... Got Best, Stafford, Pettigrew, and the Lions D/ST... Down by 40. Do I win?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Awww... dropped the ball and it shattered. Anyone have a broom?

Adam (La)

Crabtree Ros Any love?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

A little, but I still wonder with no real WR2 and that Smith guy slinging it.

rick (michigan)

would you drop b jacobs to get helu? i would then have all the washington rb"s.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

If you're going to put all your eggs in one basket, please check for holes first...

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

If you're going to put all your eggs in one basket, please check for holes first...

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That's the final whistle, gang. Sorry I couldn't get to them all... there's Twitter for that. (@ajmass) Until then, please do check put my book "How Fantasy Sports Explains the World" and as always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
