Chat with Heather Dinich

Heather Dinich
  (12:59 PM)

Hey guys, I'm here. Let's go!

Greg (Washington, DC)

Heather, Which VT offense do you think we'll see against Wake Forest this coming Saturday? I wonder if last week's performance had more to do with Miami's overrated defense. But then again, the Hokies looked pretty darned good. Thanks.

Heather Dinich
  (1:00 PM)

Great question, Greg. I think it will be somewhere in between. What Logan Thomas did was unreal. Will be hard to duplicate. Wilson will get his yards, and I don't think Miami's defense was overrated, I think it's decimated by injuries. So was VT's.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Heather, I know his job security is not an issue, but how much heat/criticism, should Jimbo Fisher be receiving down in Tallahassee for the Seminoles disappointing record?

Heather Dinich
  (1:02 PM)

I don't think Jimbo has done a bad job, I just think it goes back to the fact that expectations were too high. I will say, though, that Jimbo played right into them. Told me himself he thought they were a championship team. It's their job to get the right guys on the field.

Tony (Kabul, ACCylum)

HD, it is possible that Clemson could play and beat 8 ranked opponents this year, shouldn't that be enough "IF" it happens for a shot at a BCS NCG

Heather Dinich
  (1:03 PM)

Not sure how you figure eight. What am I missing? One thing you can count on is the computers giving credit for SOS. Will be interesting to see where Clemson falls in the first BCS Standings on Sunday night.

Peggy (USA Prime Credit)

Hello, this is Peggy. Why is it that Georgia Tech cannot crush their conference foes like they did against OOC opponents?

Heather Dinich
  (1:04 PM)

Simple: Because the ACC has better competition than anyone they've faced so far.

Pavlov's Dog (Mother Russia)

The ACC has a shot at having an undefeated team by seasons end. Your thoughts on that same undefeated ACC team getting snubbed out of the BCS Championship game?

Heather Dinich
  (1:04 PM)

Welcome to Boise's world.

Charlie (Richmond, VA)

What did you find to be the real reason NC State has not been having as good as an offense this year, than last year?

Heather Dinich
  (1:06 PM)

I think part of it has to do with poor pass protection, and also that Mustafa Greene has been out, plus you have to factor in a learning curve for Mike Glennon, it all adds up.

Jeff (Atlanta, GA)

Heather, I had a chance to watch Clemson play in person last Saturday against BC and I came away very impressed. They have so much team speed....on both sides of the ball. Besides Tech, what other stumbling blocks do they have on their way to a potential undefeated season?

Heather Dinich
  (1:07 PM)

Why does everyone keep forgetting about North Carolina?! Every week! They're 5-1. I know they haven't had a great OOC sked, but they're still a contender in the ACC race.

Lance (Destin, FL)

Does Coach Trickett get the axe at FSU? His idea of smaller, quicker linemen isn't working. Look at LSU, Bama and OU and you quickly realize you need those big 4 and 5 star o-lineman.

Heather Dinich
  (1:07 PM)

You have to be kidding. He's one of the best in the business. It's not his fault the group has been injured through spring and summer and the first half of the season and has had no chance to get in sync.

Mike (Durham, NC)

How far outside of the realm of possibility is it that Duke makes a bowl game?

Heather Dinich
  (1:09 PM)

Not far at all. With the way the rest of the conference is looking (beatable), Duke should still win a game or two it's not supposed to. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they won this weekend.

Blackened Mahimahi (Bacon Fortress)

Heather,Do you think UNC will win the coastal and maybe even the ACC this year, I think a lot of people are forgetting about them!

Heather Dinich
  (1:10 PM)

A fish so nice they named it twice, eh?I think UNC has just as good of a chance as Virginia Tech based on what we've seen so far (inconsistency), but Georgia Tech has to lose twice in order for that to happen. The Heels and Hokies needs some help.

Jake (Baton Rouge, LA)

How does FSU go from no.5 in the rankings to falling completely off the map? What the heck is the matter with them. Can it be fixed?

Heather Dinich
  (1:10 PM)

Jimbo said yesterday he thinks it can. A lot of things have gone into it, including injuries, but it also starts up front on offense.

Bob (High Point, NC)

Did we learn that VT has an offense or that Miami has no defense?

Heather Dinich
  (1:11 PM)

VT has an offense. Neither team played much defense. Didn't matter. Terrific game.

Professor Chaos (Omnipresence)

How do the Hokies need help? They beat GT, they own the tiebreaker!

Heather Dinich
  (1:12 PM)

Yes, that's right, you're right, sorry.

Scott (FL)

Do you think NC State makes their usual mid season turnaround this year? TOB usually makes good adjustments in his bye week and Mustafa Greene should be coming back now at anytime. Your thoughts?

Heather Dinich
  (1:13 PM)

I have seen nothing from NC State to indicate a dramatic turnaround. The only reason I think it's a possibility is because everyone remaining on their schedule, with the exception of Clemson, has proven beatable.

Evan (Nc)

What do you make of dukes chances of beating a struggling fsu team.. And if they do will they make your bowl projections next week

Heather Dinich
  (1:14 PM)

I think Duke is a lot like Wake Forest in that they rely first on their passing game. If the Blue Devils win, yes, they would probably make the bowl list this week, but no promises until I see it all on paper.

Waffles (Southern California)

Are you excited to see Russell Wilson take on your Alma Mater, Indiana?

Heather Dinich
  (1:15 PM)

Take on? You mean pummel?

Mitch (Alabama)

My grandma could total more yards this season than FSU's running backs. They stink!

Heather Dinich
  (1:16 PM)

Ahem ... somebody get granny a uni?

skip to my lou holtz (ACCylum)

you said all along FSU's year was next year...after seeing all the problems theyre having with depth, injuries, and shoddy offensive line play do you still believe that?

Heather Dinich
  (1:17 PM)

Thanks for paying attention. Yeah, I do. I think they'll learn from this season, they'll grow up, and EJ will be one of the ACC's best QBs next year.

Brendan (Cambridge, MA)

Your best guess, is Spaziani back at BC next year? If not him then who?

Heather Dinich
  (1:18 PM)

I have no idea who would replace him, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he were fired, and I say that only because of how involved Gene D. seems to be in the program.

wisertime (behind the screen)

As a worried fan, how long do you give it before Chad Morris shows up on the radar to fill vacant head coaching gigs?(please say not until at least after next year!)

Heather Dinich
  (1:19 PM)

As a seasoned ACC blogger, ask FSU fans how worried they are these days about Mark Stoops leaving. Coaches are hot. Then they're not. Wait and see, but I do think Morris was the best hire of the offseason. Not long before the rest of the CFB world catches on to him.

Drew (Middletown, MD)

Heather; I've seen every Terps game for the last 10 years, and can't remember seeing a QB go from looking so good to so bad (mostly b/c they were so bad to start). What do you think has gone wrong with Danny O...and is CJ gonna get the start Saturday for homecoming? Any chance we win?

Heather Dinich
  (1:21 PM)

I wonder how much of it is the system and Gary Crowton, Drew. He wasn't exactly loved by LSU fans. Maryland has a chance, but I don't see the upset, sorry.

Tank (Bellview, FL)

Georgia Tech or Clemson. Who has impressed your more so far?

Heather Dinich
  (1:22 PM)

I'd say Clemson because of their strength of schedule, and their defense. I think the Tigers have gotten better defensively, while Georgia Tech seems to have stayed relatively the same.

wonka (middle of no-where)

is Wake Forrest ACCCG bound?

Heather Dinich
  (1:23 PM)

The Deacs have as much of a shot as Clemson does at this point.

lunchpailhokie (the accylum)

Best QB next year? How bout some LT action

Heather Dinich
  (1:23 PM)

We're already talking about next year?? Have ACC fans already moved on? If LT plays the way he did against Miami on a consistent basis, he'll be one of the best in the country.

Adam Rittenberg (Chicago)

Twice I made fun of the ACC during my chat. What'cha got for me?

Heather Dinich
  (1:24 PM)

Just legends. And leaders.

Mike London (Cville)

When we upset Ga Tech on Saturday, will you finally give us some respect in your power rankings?

Heather Dinich
  (1:24 PM)

Two words: Overtime. Idaho.

Jon (NYC)

Is the ACC planning of having only 12 teams in 2012?

Heather Dinich
  (1:26 PM)

As far as I know at this point, yes. Have not heard anything on the Big East speeding things up.

lunchpailhokie (the accylum)

as long as our fans dont throw him under the bus for having a bad game again.

Heather Dinich
  (1:26 PM)

Imagine how Jacory Harris feels.

Tom O'Brien (Raleigh, NC)

Whats my teams record going to be at the end of the year? Should I be concerned about my job?

Heather Dinich
  (1:27 PM)

Not bowl eligible. My guess is job is safe, but on a short leash for 2012.

Deante (Louisville)

Can we please stop putting our faith in FSU and Miami to resurrect the ACC because it's obviously not going to happen. Let's start focusing on other teams because Miami is destined to be middle of the pack and FSU is the most overrated programs of the last decade.

Heather Dinich
  (1:27 PM)

You mean like Georgia Tech and Clemson?

Your Name (Your Location)

Heather, what is wrong with Miami. Top recruiting class in 2008 and nothing to show for it. Is Golden's time numbered.

Heather Dinich
  (1:28 PM)

No way. Golden had nothing to do with any of that.

Laura (Va)

Heather, I would like to remind everyone that the ACC belongs to Va Tech until someone takes it from that we have found an offense, we should be able to take the Coastal and play Clem in Charlotte....REMEMBER, HARD TO BEAT A TEAM TWICE IN ONE YEAR !!!

Heather Dinich
  (1:29 PM)

It is, but Georgia Tech did it to Clemson in 2009.

Jimbo Fisher (Florida State)

You know Heather, with the pummeling you take from these ACC fans each week...I think we've found our new running back. I'm sure you can get at least one yard to be the all time leading rusher this season.

Heather Dinich
  (1:29 PM)

I don't like to brag, but I WAS a heckuva tailback on the co-ed team at IU.

George P. Burdell (Junior's Grill)

How does the ACC stack up against thier SEC rivals at the end of the year? Specifically GT/U(sic)GA , Clem/USC, Duke/Vandy, FSU/UF

Heather Dinich
  (1:31 PM)

BURDELL!! Where have you been all season?? I like the ACC in all of those matchups, but again, I go back to 2009 when Clemson and Georgia Tech were favored to win those games and they went splat.

Wes (Fort Meade, MD)

Pics or it didn't happen

Heather Dinich
  (1:32 PM)

Lol I was too fast to catch on camera. :)

Jed (Raleigh, NC)

What's the deal with Wake Forest? How can one team lose to future member 'Cuse, yet beat the best of them?

Heather Dinich
  (1:33 PM)

The Deacs HAVE to be kicking themselves for that loss to 'Cuse. They should be undefeated right now, and had Tanner Price stayed on his feet for 11 more minutes, they probably would be.

Brett (St. Louis)

After watching Saturday's game, I can't help but proclaim Lamar Miller the best running back in the ACC. He had more yards than David Wilson while going up against a superior defense. (I will admit that he has a better offensive line, though.) What say you?

Heather Dinich
  (1:34 PM)

I Tweeted during that game that Miller was having the better day. Feel free to follow @ESPN_ACC next time.

Josh (Tampa)

If EJ played the whole game against Wake, does Wake still come out on top?

Heather Dinich
  (1:35 PM)

I think so. Price still won the QB battle.

jander75 (the accylum)

I have to question you most recent bowl projections, do you honestly think both florida schools will make a bowl? based on what we have seen so far I don't think too many people would be surprised if neither made the post season.

Heather Dinich
  (1:36 PM)

To this point, yes. Miami put up a great fight against VT, and I still don't think FSU is as bad as its record indicates. That being said, count me among those who wouldn't be surprised if they were both home, but I can remember covering FSU just a few years ago when they were in a similar spot under Bowden.

David (Greenville, SC)

Any update on Tajh Boyd?

Heather Dinich
  (1:37 PM)

Chad Morris told me yesterday he would be "shocked" if Boyd didn't play. He's sore, but he'll be fine.

Andrew (college park)

fire edsall and bradford and hire leach and stoops!

Heather Dinich
  (1:37 PM)

Terps had their chance.

Robert (Griffin, GA)

Why is EJ still hesitant to play? If he had heart he'd play. Most players play with FAR worse injuries i.e. broken ribs, arms, etc.

Heather Dinich
  (1:38 PM)

Not his call!! Team doctors have the final word.

Tamara (Atlanta)

With the way the Jackets have been playing do you think they can hold on....seems like they went from great to just ok

Heather Dinich
  (1:40 PM)

Their preseason sked made them look great. Until proven otherwise, though, they're the team to beat. I think they'll trip up somewhere, though, and the Coastal race will get interesting.

Andrew (Atl)

Virginia seems like it has decent stats, even though they've been playing bad opponents. You keep saying Idaho, but what tells you they probably won't pull an upset?

Heather Dinich
  (1:41 PM)

Georgia Tech has the edge at quarterback, but I absolutely think UVA can pull off the upset, especially with a bye week to prepare. The defense has been solid. I'm just not sold on UVA's turnovers. I think they'll make a key mistake or two.

Josh (Tampa)

Heather, team doctors at FSU do NOT have the final word... Jimbo kept him out against OU, Clemson, and the beginning of Wake. He was medically cleared for all 3. Jimbo said "Docs cleared him to play but told me if he took a good hit to that shoulder it could put him out for a while." Isn't that the case with EVERY player that takes a good hit?

Heather Dinich
  (1:43 PM)

Well, you're right. He was cleared to return against Oklahoma, and Jimbo said yesterday he was cleared to play in "an emergency" situation, but Jimbo also said he trusts the doctors and listens to what they say. He asked the media what they would do if it were their son. I would have played EJ against Oklahoma as soon as I knew he was cleared. Play to win.

Matt (DC)

Hi Heather,I think Tevin Washington has a lot of positives and has clearly taken hold of the offense this season. However, it seems like he's struggled over the past couple weeks to actually run the full OPTION. I feel like I didn't see a single pitch on Saturday. It was all passes and QB keeps. Thoughts? Do you think CPJ will try to spice things up and get some variety back for our upcoming games?

Heather Dinich
  (1:45 PM)

CPJ said specifically after that game that Tevin needs to learn to pitch it more. That being said, Mike London after watching film said he thought Maryland's D had something to do with it.

Heather Dinich
  (1:45 PM)

hang on one sec, Giovani Bernard on phone ...

Michael (Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota)

Boyd wins Heisman if Clemson goes undefeated? He'll have faced some of the best defenders along the way if you go back and look at the teams' rosters.

Heather Dinich
  (1:46 PM)

He's the ACC's best chance, but he hasn't cracked my top five I turn into yet.

Justin (Roanoke, VA)

Any injury updates on G-Winslow or James Gayle for VT?

Heather Dinich
  (1:47 PM)

Beamer said yesterday he'll update injures with regular ACC injury update later this week.

John (Atlanta)

Probability Maryland upsets Clemson this weekend?

Heather Dinich
  (1:48 PM)

I'm just not seeing it. Clemson has the advantage at quarterback, especially with what happened last week.

Ghey Waffles (B1G town)

Who is the most impressive freshman in the ACC right now?

Heather Dinich
  (1:49 PM)

I gotta go with Sammy Watkins at this point for Clemson.

Don (Bridgewater, NJ)

Heather, did you just name drop Giovani Bernard??

Heather Dinich
  (1:50 PM)

Yeah, he's super humble. Giving all the credit to his offensive line.

Nick (Pensacola)

Maryland has always been a trap game for Clemson! How much should I worry about this weekend?

Heather Dinich
  (1:51 PM)

Aren't Clemson fans used to worrying? Why stop now?

Danny (Ohio)

Has Edsall lost his marbles benching Danny O'Brien?

Heather Dinich
  (1:51 PM)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any quarterback in that game passed well.

WD (Cola, SC)

How big would it be for your career if Clemson made it to the BCSChampionship Game?

Heather Dinich
  (1:52 PM)

Lol, Dabo Swinney would get the raise, not me. But I have never covered a national title game. I've said many times I don't care who from the ACC goes. Just get me there!!

troy (FL)

Is Edsall overrated as a coach? I just think Fridgeon was better.

Heather Dinich
  (1:54 PM)

Let's see, you've got the Big East COY vs. the ACC COY. I dunno. I DO know that Edsall needs to improve his 2-17 record against ranked opponents or the answer will be yes.

Danny A. Walters (Kroeger Foods)

HD, Is VT getting out of Logan Thomas what they expected (some games up, some games down), or was the Miami performance what they fully expected all along?

Heather Dinich
  (1:55 PM)

No, those within the program absolutely expected growing pains for Thomas. No way were they expecting him to come out in Week 1 and do what he did last week. They knew his ceiling, though.

FB The Orchid Crusher (West Hollywood)

If you could redo the preseason top 25, would you have Va Tech top 20 on it? Been a disappointing season so far.

Heather Dinich
  (1:56 PM)

Probably somewhere around 15-20.

Nurse Ratched (The ACCylum)

Heather, you are getting a following of groupies from the B1G conference in chat--we keep telling them they can't have you (although they have not offerred 2 camels, 3 goats, russell wilson, frankincense, and myrrh yet)--will you defect?

Heather Dinich
  (1:57 PM)

Hmm, if they're offering Russell Wilson, I think NC State fans just might trade me. Gladly.

Tracey (MD)

Is Wake the real deal or has FSU just packed it up for the year?

Heather Dinich
  (1:58 PM)

As far as being better, they're the real deal. Same goes for ACC standings. Can they finish? Your guess is as good as mine. This league is flat-out unpredictable.

Marc (Charlotte)

Did Gio call to tell you to give him some props for top ACC running back?

Heather Dinich
  (1:59 PM)

Lol, no he is the Friday Conversation for this week, but tough to do an interview during a chat!

drdakster (LKN, NC)

Wake is real. Nov 12 they kick Clemson out of the ACCCG.

Heather Dinich
  (1:59 PM)

It's the game to watch all of a sudden, agree, but Clemson is better.

jj (anderson, sc)

i don't think Andre Ellington is 100 percent healthy, and i think our offense could be better with Howard and Bellamy right now. thoughts?

Heather Dinich
  (2:00 PM)

I saw Ellington live against FSU and he was not himself. He's been getting better every week, but that hammy has held him back. Talked to Chad Morris about that yesterday, too. He said Ellington is a guy who needs the practice reps and hasn't been getting them. He'll get back.

John (The Burg, VA)

Heather - 1 minute left - hope this one gets answered - How much do you think the injuries to the VT squad all around are going to affect them the remainder of the season. Theres a lot of injuries and most do not look good.

Heather Dinich
  (2:01 PM)

Last question ... I think this is a major, major concern for Virginia Tech's defense, but you know what? NC State has injuries. FSU has injuries. Miami is banged up. Welcome to college football.

Heather Dinich
  (2:01 PM)

Ok guys, gotta run. You know, with my tailback speed and everything. See you next week.hd
