Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. We've got 5 weeks down in the football season and still a lot to go, so let's get some good questions going and have some fun! Thanks as always for showing up and being polite... so here we go!

Fred (Bedrock)

Fantasy Football Grand Poobah, Really like the upside with Greg Little. Would you drop either Antonio Brown or David Nelson to add him and who do you like ROS out of the three. Hurry, Wilma is coming.

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

There does seem to be much discussion about Little this week, but how come? It's still not a very good passing offense at all in Cleveland. No, I would not drop Brown - getting a ton of targets in Pitt - or Nelson to add Little.

Eric (DC)

From one Eric to another: Should I trade Stafford and Fred Jackson for Rodgers and Law Firm?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Wow. Lot of good players in that deal. I think Rodgers is special. Will probably finish with at least 50 more points than Stafford, maybe more. So while I like Jackson more than Green-Ellis, go for the best player. Yeah, I would do that deal.

Shonn Greene (Jets)

My fantasy value has been...subpar. Rexy says he wants to ground and pound...do you believe him? Can I achieve RB2 status?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Greene has actually looked better of late, though I think the matchups had some role in that, but Greene really should be better than he's shown anyway. We do have a track record on him in the cold, or later in December and the playoffs. Yeah, he can absolutely be a top 20 RB. I don't think he's there yet.

Tim (Cincinnati)

Does Josh freeman bounce back from the abyss and post respectable numbers, at home, against a poor Saints secondary or do I take my chances with Schaub in Baltimore?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Well, I think abyss is a bit harsh. He's still in the top 20 for QBs this season, so it's not like he's been Sam Bradford. I don't see him having a great season now. Mike Williams has disappeared. The Saints give it up through the air, but this week I think they hold the Bucs in check.

Kevin D (Chicago)

Starks or Daniel Thomas ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I had Thomas a few spots better in this week's end of season ranks, but I feel like it should be more like 8 or 9 spots. Starks has been a disappointment, no? He's had plenty of opportunity, even without Ryan Grant, and been below average. Thomas hasn't been bad, he just hasn't played enough.

Brandon Marshall (Miami)

I've got a bad case of the dropsies. And now Matt Moore will be throwing me the rock? Can he throw the deep ball like Henne? Or am I stuck in a situation like the 49er's WRs with Alex Smith? Do I have any WR1 upside left?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

One would certainly think Matt Moore isn't going to make things much better for his WRs, but one never knows for sure. I mean, Kevin Kolb is a disappointment, but Fitzgerald is fine. I'd hope for WR2 status for Marshall at this point. I ranked him well for this week, since - believe it or not - the matchup isn't nearly as bad as normal with the Jets, and hope for the best.

Mike (Raleigh)

Thoughts on Lee Evans? Would you rather own Evans over DHB or Little ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I would rather own Cliff Lee than Lee Evans at this point. Seriously, I think there's upside with Heyward-Bey and perhaps with Little. What can Evans do in that offense? And when's the last time we saw Torrey Smith do anything? Exactly.

Charles (Cleveland)

So for the rest of the season who would you rather have between Cruz and Manningham? I know Cruz is the slot guy but he seems to have Eli's attention.

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Still leaning on Manningham for ROS, but this week, I was all in on Cruz. He makes plays. I can't understand why Manningham is struggling.

Joel (Michigan )

Can I safely say goodbye to Dexter McCluster? Perhaps I should never had said "Hello" ....

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

In a 10-team league I doubt we'll see much out of McCluster, but please don't assume Jackie Battle is going to be a star. It's odd; I recommended him a week ago, then he plays really well and now I seem a bit down on him. It was the Colts. We all run on them. I think McCluster isn't being utilized right, and at some point maybe the Chiefs will figure it out. He's not a RB1. He's not a WR1. But he should be getting 7 or 8 targets per week somehow so he can break one.

David (Mexico)

Hola Eric show Mexico some love please. I saw the rankings and B. Marshall is pretty high, no worries with Revis Island? Im thinking of going with Jacoby Jones.

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Jets are allowing enough WR fantasy points for Marshall to be useful, and it won't be Revis the entire game. I'd look elsewhere but it wouldn't be Jacoby Jones. One catch last week on 11 targets. Awful. Never seen that before. Derrick Mason was brought in because Jones was so underwhelming.

Brian (Lincoln)

ROS Torrain or Tolbert in a PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Tolbert. Not a chance I would trust any Redskins RB at this point. Plus, Torain is rarely healthy. Tolbert will be back for the next game and he gets enough touches to matter.

Tim (Saint Louis, Cardinal Nation)

Let's Go CARDS!!!!! j/k Eric, sorry we had to take Philly out on our way to the title :) But seriously, Would you trade Ray Rice for Jennings and Bradshaw? I love Jennings but am not cold on Bradshaw

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Well, Philly kind of deserved it the way they hit, and the way Cliff Lee blew Game 2. I kind of expected Game 5 would end badly for the home team. Anyway, good luck against the Brewers. I think I would hold Rice there, unless you really need the WR. Best player in the deal and you can play the matchups at WR this season, even finding Doug Baldwin types when you need.

Albert (Boredatworkville, MA)

AJ Green has exceeded my expectations and been very solid and consistant this year...how do you expect him to do ROS and next year? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I think he's a top 20 WR, easily. He's been putting up the numbers weekly, and his rookie QB looks like he'll be a very good player in two years. Yeah, I trust Green at this point.

Joel (Michigan )

The Tebow hype train is filling up quickly. Should I save you a seat or are you already on board ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

It's overhyped, that's for sure. I ranked Tebow 17th at QB for the rest of the season, and got 500 emails/tweets/conversation saying that was WAY too high, and another 500 saying it was way too low. He's polarizing, much like Vick. I think he'll put up numbers, but won't win.

Robert (Maine)

Would you trade Fred Jackson and Larry Fitzgerald for Chris Johnson and Wes Welker?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Yes, I would. I think CJ will still be a top 10 RB, and Welker's act isn't an act. He's this good.

sam (seattle)

With Blount out, I need a RB filler for this week. Would you do Brady/Battle for Romo/SGreen? I'm 1-4 and badly need a win

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I rarely make trades like that just because one of my starting RBs is out for a week or so. Brady is better than Romo, yes? Battle is off this week, but still, find a RB somewhere. I can't trade for Greene and feel good about it.

Ramon (SD)

Newton and Fitzgerald for Rodgers. Who's walking away from the table?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Seems fair, could work for both teams. I doubt Newton continues to be fantasy's No. 2 QB, but it's nice depth to drop some at QB and get a top 10 WR.

Jason (Lancaster PA)

Hey EK! With news that Woodhead is back at practice, do you bump BJGE down a bit in your rankings? Would you still rank him higher than Daniel Thomas? In a BYE week...one of these guys HAS to start for me.

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Law Firm is safe. Doesn't matter if Danny plays or not. I would go with Thomas over Danny, by the way, and easily.

Brandon (Miami)

Ok so a quick trade etiquette question. If a manager keeps bugging you for a certain player like my Mike Wallace because he has no WRs and refuses to hear any other deals, then is it ok to ask for something ridiculous in return like Turner and Blount or just Rice straight up to get him to stop asking?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Absolutely. But perhaps you can agree on something beneficial to both sides. Ask for the stars and work backwards. Clearly he wants your player.

darren (hawaii)

james jones or lance moore?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I think people are a bit too excited about one nice game from James Jones. He's still not close to top 3 among receiving options for the great Rodgers. He's probably not even fourth. I will take Moore.

Tony (Work)

Hurry up the BOSS is coming, Pick a side---Bradford/FJax or Flacco/Hillis.

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Yuck. The boss might not approve either side of that one. I'll take Sam and Fred. At least Fred looks like a top 10 RB.

Brian (MA)

thoughts on eric decker ros? does tebow coming in hurt his vaulue significantly?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I don't think it helps it, and I did drop Decker some, but let's remember Brandon Lloyd did just fine with Timmy last season. No other WR did, though.

Aaron (Green-N-Cold)

Is Jacoby Ford ever going to break out in Oak. Ive holding on to him all year...is it time to let go.

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

You know the minute you let Jacoby go he'll have a big game. Always happens that way. I still think, despite Hey-Bey emerging some, that Ford will be their top WR this season.

Dolph (Ohio)

I just traded Ray Rice away to get Felix Jones and Roddy White. How did I do?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Could have been worse, but let's put it this way: On draft day would have dealt away a top 5 pick for a 2nd rounder and 4th? Probably not. The draft is irrelevant now, but I almost always want the best player.

Tripp (C-ville)

Hey, E! Given the weekly make/break associated with Jordy Nelson, how should I treat him going forward? I've been playing him as a WR2 with inconsistent results. Manningham a better option?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Jordy has 3 games in double digits, so I could see that ending up being 10 or so this year. That's a decent WR2. Manningham isn't doing much these days.

Brian (MA)

Thoughts on Mendenhall ROS once he's healthy? Does he start to do anything?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Yeah, I think it will get better. The line is improving, the schedule will as well.

Matt (Civics class)

Does Hardesty begin to take the majority of the carries any time soon? Hardesty or Battle ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I don't know about majority anytime soon, but certainly Hillis is going to have to share some. I think it's Hardesty over Battle; people are just a bit too happy over Battle. It was the Colts!

Bob (PDX)

Would you ever start 2 TEs (one at WR position) if allowed and you had Finley and A.Hernandez?? It would mean sitting S.Moss, Manningham, or V. Cruz....

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Absolutely. I would start my best options. And Hernandez is really good. This week I like Moss and Cruz, though.

Sloat (Boston)

I have a stacked bench, with hernandez backing up graham at TE, and Tebow backing up Stafford. I am about to go into a bye week where i have four players off that week. I have a great team that generally wins by 40+ points. Do you think it's ok to just not play a kicker because i need to pick up WRs and don't want to drop any skill players?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Awfully confident, aren't ya? Teams like these, that go 12-2, seem to lose in December (or maybe we like to think they do!). Anyway, it is ok to go without an active kicker, yes. But don't be surprised if your luck changes a bit....

Ryan (SB)

Do you ever lend players to help cover bye weeks. I am talking about a trade with a round trip ticket.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

No. I would never do that. Perhaps some could make the case it's ok and not unethical, but I won't do that.

Matt (Denver)

Have Brady and Cam. What should I look for in trade for either, most likely CamThanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Cam actually has more points than Tom Terrific! I would trade Cam as well, but always ask high early on and see what someone will part with. Only takes one person to give you Adrian Peterson for a QB.

Robert (Orlando)

In a league where return yards are counted (savagery I know) is Devin Hester/James Starks for Cruz/Isaac Redman a good trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Well, I would take the Hester/Starks side regardless. Cruz remains a risk... I don't see much in Redman.

Michael (Charlotte)

Hey EK! In a 14 team keeper league, would you trade for Kenny Britt for next year? he would cost me a mere $16 to keep.

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

That doesn't seem so cheap to me for a player coming back from a serious knee injury. Or even a healthy WR that isn't top 10.

Dallas (Cubicle Not In Dallas)

I was about to include Big Ben and M. Wallace in a trade until I saw their tasty upcoming schedule. Wouldn't I be selling low based on their easy upcoming schedule?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I would keep them around, personally. And regardless of Ben and his foot, Wallace is great.

Rico (LA)

Team is very solid, QB is prob weakest... With Big Ben and Flacco, do you foresee any weeks when Tebow will start for me?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I don't have bye weeks memorized, but not really. I do think Tebow will have some 20-point games. He did last year. But there's a reliability factor, too.

Kevin (NYC)

If you had Cam and Ben, which would you look to trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Today, Cam. He's had a monster season. You can get more for him, unquestionably. And I think Cam will have a better season, but not by as much as the difference is now.

Dave (SC)

Need to drop one in PPR format: Bess, McCluster, Baldwin (just added), or Nelson. (rest of yr rankings work for ppr?)

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Probably Baldwin there. I think the PPR part pushes Bess over the top, and Nelson does enough. McCluster is the RB/WR guy and should catch passes.

Reggie (Bush)

Thoughts on me for ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Another polarizing fella... I could see 50-plus receptions, but he's not gonna help fantasy owners much.

J.B. (PA)

Should the trade of Mason to Houston make Jacoby Jones owners think about trading/dropping him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Absolutely. I wrote today that this is an obvious indictment on Jones from Week 5, and could also signal Andre J misses at least 2 more weeks.

Sarah (Up North, Michigan)

I have the unfortunate pair of Bradford and Kolb - needless to say, I need to part with one of them. Keep hearing about Bradford nice second half schedule, is it really going to make a difference? Or should I keep him, kick Kolb to the curb and pick up someone like Grossman, McCoy, Cassel or Painter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Sorry, but at this point I don't see how you could trade either. I do like Sam's sked when it becomes mostly division games. Of course, Kolb gets that too. I'll say keep 'em both and try to play matchups.

SEAN (UCLA)

bye week desperation, should I start ryan torian or delone carter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Certainly Torain is coming off a big game and one would think he gets a chance to do it again. Carter still hasn't shown much.

Sarah (Sarasota)

Does Lloyd's value sink with Tebow?Would you trade him for Boldin or NWashington?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I dropped Lloyd from like 14 to 17 for ROS. So not too much. I would rather own Lloyd than Boldin or Nate.

Darnell Jefferson (THE PROGRAM)

An Owner in my league DROP'd Michael Crabtree to Waivers. Would you claim him if it meant dropping my Frank Gore handcuff Kendall Hunter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I don't think Crabtree is special or will help fantasy owners much, and the way Gore is playing you won't use Hunter... but if Gore gets hurt. Look, it depends if you need help now. If you need to use Crabtree this week, sure. But I doubt he'll be a top 25 WR.

Zee (DC)

Need your advise before I pull the trigger. Should I trade brady for newton in a keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Ha! I wouldn't, but then again, I think Brady has a few more excellent seasons.

Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)

EK, I have finally caught on to the fact that I need to trust your rankings and opinions over all the other industry experts. Guess (most of) your stuff is available only to insiders for a reason. Thanks for the help!

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Wow, that is very kind of you. I appreciate it. We all try...

Brian (MA)

Thoughts on Miles Austin off the bye week? Will he have a huge game vs the NE pass Def?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I ranked Miles as if he was going to have a huge game vs the NE pass Def, yes.

Kevin (NYC)

So would you shy away from trading for Andre Johnson at this point due to the uncertainty of how long he'll be out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I wouldn't trade for him as if he was a clear cut top 5 WR the rest of the way, no. I would still trade for him though.

brian (de)

Is Johny Knox even ownable at this point? He never seemed to be in the game last week. Would you play him, Jacoby Jones, or Preston Parker this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I would play Knox, but I wouldn't feel terrible positive about doing so.

Roger (DC)

Is this the perfect sell high....trading Best for Wells and Andre Johnson.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

A virtual thing of beauty.

Michael (Jacksonville)

Followed you since the days of the Sunday morning Fantasy Focus. Miss those days. You and Scotty Engel were great. What ever happened to him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Wow, thanks! He's thriving on another site ... though you should still stay here on ESPN!

Starks...James Starks (GB)

A disappointment? I'm averaging 4.4 ypc. What else can I do, EK? Since we are on the subject of fantasy...who would you rather roster Helu or Battle?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

In the last three weeks he has a total of 12 fantasy points. I call that disappointing. And I will take Battle there, but only because the Redskins coach is just crazy and might bring in someone off the street to play RB. You can't figure him out. Helu could be Arian Foster the final 6 weeks ... or never get a carry.

Eric (CO)

Baseball! Would you rather have CJ Wilson in round 17 or Beltran in 23 next year? My other 4 protections are hitters.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Baseball! Let's get some baseball questions in here! Beltran is still the better value there; consider where each fella would go in a draft. Is Wilson top 10 rounds? Prob not. (Unless he's a Yankee!). Is Beltran? Probably is, assuming it's a decent home park.

Matt (Philly)

EK, Julio Jones declared out. Where do you rank Harry Douglas now for week 6?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Probably around 40-42 or so. So not real great.

Lee (ABQ)

Is it possible to sell high on DeAngelo after last game? I would try to sell high to get another RB though since I am stacked at WR. Would you consider trading him straight up for R. Gronkowski? Keller is my TE

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

No way I would do that trade, and I'm not even backing DeAngelo this week. Your TE is fine. And DeAngelo is still very talented; if Panthers can avoid falling behind every week, perhaps DeAngelo will get more consistent carries.

BJ (Indiana)

Is Harvin still a must-start?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I don't think he ever was a must start, do you? I'd say he's not a top 20 WR.

Chris (Minneapolis)

Need a QB. Offer Campbell & Beanie for Stafford

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Seems reasonable to me, but then again, most people seem to like Beanie more than I.

Mitch (.)(.)

I need to make some big moves to get relevant again. Do I trade Stafford & Turner for Mendy

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I think that would make you more relevant for next year's top draft pick.

Neo (The Matrix)

Bye weeks and an injury to Blount, means I am either starting D.Sproles or Felix Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Nothing wrong with either guy there. Would have used Sproles over Blount last week.

Vandal (Blue Turf Idaho)

Brees is my starting QB, and only QB on my roster. Should I drop D Moore for Bradford to stash for Brees week 11 bye, where Bradford plays SEA? I am in a deep league

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Seems wise to me. Still more than a month away, though. You might be able to do better in Week 9 looking for a QB.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is all the time we have for this fine Wednesday, so thank you so much for showing up and asking questions, hope I answered them to your satisfaction. Have a great day and best of luck in Week 6 and beyond!
