Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi folks, let's get rolling.

Adam (Nashville)

Mike Santo and you spoke about the trade for Curry. I asked him if there was any hint that Mr Davis was involved in this before his death, and Mike, while not directly answering indated a distinct possibility. What's your take bro, we have a parting gift from Al this week?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I'm sure Hue Jackson's will be asked that question today. Curry has been on the block for a few weeks and Mr. Davis worked until his death, so I wouldn't be shocked if it was on his agenda when he passed.

Jamie (BFE, Kansas)

Is Baldwin an instant contributor?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I think Baldwin is behind because he missed six weeks of practice not to mention the offseason due to the lockout. I think he will be slowly brought around. But I do see him be given the opportunity to help at some point this year.

Justin (Colorado Springs, CO)

What is the chance the Chiefs will try to get Terrell Owens?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I wouldn't say high. I might not even say low. He and Todd Haley weren't exactly tight when they were in Dallas together.

Denton (Hays, KS) [via mobile]

BW, love the work. With Coach Fox's conservative style of play and wanting to run the ball first, how much is the play book going to change? In my opinion it's not going to be as different as people think.

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

Thanks, sir, I think they will surely try to run first with Tebow. I think the key to a Tebow playbook is the allowance for plays that lend themselves to freelancing fo the quarterback, so there will be a lot of third and fourth-option plays, I'd think.

zeke (upstate ny)

With offenses piling up yardage and a record pace this season, is it reasonable that a team like Oakland's defense can make a solid playoff run?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Whether or not the Raiders make the playoffs is up to that defense and whether it can slow teams down.

zeke (upstate ny)

San Diego is 4-1 but hasn't dominated anyone except for the 1st half of the Denver game. Are they for real? Or could Oakland come out and grab control of the division Thursday night of week 9 coming out of a bye?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think it will be clsoe all seasons long between these two teams.

Ryan (Seattle)

With both teams showing a lot of improvement, what are the odds we see The Bay Area Bowl in the next few years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Interesting.Wow, have't thought of that recently. Why not? Both organizations are improving. Could you imagine the Bay Area during that time?Holy man. It would be mayhem.

Jamie (BFE, Kansas)

Is KCs offensive line good enough for Battle to keep running the ball like he did against the Colts, or was that a product of a poor defense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Chiefs' coach Todd Haley likes where his O-line is ehaded. It's coming along well.

BG (Seattle)

I was too busy celebrating the benching of Kyle Orton to notice that Von Miller was benched during the last game. Any insights to why he was benched?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

He played in passing situations, but other players were playing in base, so yeah, he was replaced. I don't think it is a major deal yet. Now, if it continues, it will be an issue. But Miller is dominant as a pass-rusher and the team is happy with his overall play thus far. He's just a rookie trying to feel his way. Setbacks happen. The key is addressing it and improving.

Dante (Minny)

Does Jackie Battle get a chance to be a sustaining runner for KC?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

I think he will get the chance for the rest of the season. He has given the Cheifs a much-needed spark in the aftermath of Jamaal Charles' injury. He will continue to get that chance.

philmon (philadelphia)

Do you consider Tyson Jackson a draft bust, and is he better than Aaron curry?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Well, his drafting tema hasn't given up on him yet, so that's a plus. I think he is improving and he will be decent. But he may never live up to being the No. 3 pick in the draft.

Angelo (san antonio, tx)

Hey BW, read your blog everyday. I was wondering what your take on Louis Murphy's role for the Raiders now that DHB, Moore, Hagan, and Schilens have proven to be good recievers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Thanks, Angelo, don't forget Ford, he's a stud. I think there will be a place for Murphy. He is a solid possession guy who is reliable. I think the Raiders' receiving group is a work in progress as far as who will end up playing a lot. But Murphy can help this team.

BG (Seattle)

I'm sure that you're tired of Tebow questions, Bill, so I'm going with Andrew Luck question. Odds that Luck is in the AFC West next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Why what's going on with Tebow?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I think right now, the only chance of Luck ending up in the AFC West is Denver. If the Tebow switch doens't result in wins, the Broncos will remain a prime Luck candidate.

Lance (San Diego)

BW I know SD is 4-1, but I cant seem to get excited about my chargers they have played lackluster football, they have a good record but have tough games coming up. I compare them to the Bengals= winning record because of weaker opposition, I think OAK will take them to the final game for the division or win it outright. thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

We'll learn about the Chargers coming back. But they are 4-1. Better than previous Turner starts. Enjoy it.

Eric (KC)

I love how well the wide receivers have responded to coach Haley. Do you think he is still in the "hotseat"? Or, will he be given another season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Not right now. The hotseat is fickle. But Haley has his team working and playing hard. He deserves credit. Seriously, if the Chiefs can get to 8-8, he deserves Coach of the Year consideration.

BG (Seattle)

Settle the debate: McFadden or Mathews?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

No debate: McFadden.

Badshah (Los Angeles )

Do you think oaklands recieving core could become one of nfls top in a few years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

It has a chance, especially if Moore and Ford become the great players I think they become.

Tom Selleck's mustache (Tom Selleck's face)

Hey Bill! Any rumblings you're hearing on other possible trades going down in the division before the deadline? What teams are looking for help?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

There's some Brandon Lloyd talk out of Denver. He's looking for a new deal and Denver is trying to get younger but I'm not sure if Denver really wants to trade him.

Mic-sogoodlooking-raider (Tejas)

Who's the better RB McFadden or Mathews?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

This must be a current war of words on the comment seciton, huh?The running back landscape change and does change quickly. But McFadden is at the very top of the league right now. Mathews is a stud and he's going to be great. But McFadden is great right now.

Evan (San Francisco)

Thanks again for doing these, it's really great for us fans. Who will fill in at MLB with McClain (probably) out this week?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

Anytime brother. I hear McClain is practicing today. I haven't had a chance to check since we're doing our chat, but if he is practicing that means he'll likely play against Cleveland barring a setback.

Jack (Boston)

Is Tebow going to get a "real" chance to succeed by the coaches and game-plan utilizing his strengths or has Elway/Fox already written him off as someone who cannot be a QB on the Broncos?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Good quesiton. It's real in the sense that he will be playing. But just because the Denver brass finally is letting Tebow play doesn't mean they are sold on him. But they are willing to see if he can help down the road.

RaiderRob (New Jersey)

Do you see any creedence in the rumors of Ron Wolf or even John Madden returning to the Raiders as GM or in some other advisory capacity? I've heard Bill Parcell's name as well. With all due respect to Mr. Davis, I think the team has suffered from not having a strong and active GM or football operations guy in recent years although they have had some draft steals.

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

If any of these guys come in it would likely be as an advisor and a bridge to a new leadership.

Jefffree (San Diego, CA)

What's up with Jordan Todman and Vincent Brown? Been anxious to see what they could do in the field.

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

They are youngsters learning the system. I wouldn't write these guys off. The Chargers' roster is stacked, so these guys are depth at this point, for this season.

AJ (Oakland)

With Mr. Davis passing, have the Raiiders caught up with SD in the move to LA sweepstakes?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I know a lot of people think so, but, remember, it was Davis who moved the team twice in the past. I think he would have moved the team again if he thought it was for the best, but Davis (and the new regime) would rather stay in Oakland as a first option.

John Elway (Sports Authority Field)

What are the chances that I draft Landry Jones or Matt Barkley next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

If you aren't sold on Tebow and you don't the No. 1 pick, pretty strong. In fact, if right now, I had to guess on who'll be Denver's top pick next year, I'd say Jones.

Tom Selleck's mustache (Tom Selleck's face)

Bill, thanks much for chatting w/ us today. After seeing how stellar Darren Sproles has performed in New Orleans, do you think, in retrospect, it was a mistake for the Chargers not to resign him? Would SD's offensive scheme even offer him the chance to perform at such a high level?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

The Chargers knew he would be good. But they had to make decisions, just like Oakland with Aso. But the Chargers' run game is still pretty good.

Ry (Tucson)

How long do you expect the Raiders to be the 'Ray-duhs" with Coach Davis gone? I would expect the team to operate pretty much the same way this year but as the years go by... who knows... it's weird to think Oakland could become just another spread-offense, zone or cover 2 defense and lose Al's identity.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

They will always be the Ray-duhs. They will always be Al Davis' team.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

With that, great hour, folks. Enjoy Week 6.
