Chat with Matthew Berry

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:03 PM)

'Sup gang? Thanks for stopping by. Let's get to it. As always, all subjects answered.

Joshua (San Antonio)

What do I do with Ridley now that the law firm is playin strong.do I keep or drop for a DHB type of player

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:04 PM)

I would keep Ridley - in that offense, he could have huge value. Looks like BJGE will play this week but certainly, he's not above being injured

Beau Glorius (Tampa, FL)

So Colston is back and David Nelson has moved to the outside recieving spot. Do you think I can trust them yet or should I let them prove them selfs first?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:05 PM)

Colston yes - would wait on Nelson.

Temet (San Diego)

Where do you think Jamaal Charles will be ranked next year coming back from his knee injury?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:06 PM)

Will depend on how he looks in pre-season but my guess is I'd probabyl have him between 10-15

Nate R. (Weasels Unknown)

Jabar Gaffney or David Nelson as a flex in a PPR league?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:06 PM)

Gaffney

Ring Ring (Spartyland)

Season strategy question. Should I maintain my depth for the bye weeks or try to trade up in value to gain a stud for playoff season? I am in sole possession of first place currently.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:07 PM)

If you feel fairly confident that you make the playoffs, I do it...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:07 PM)

Make a trade for a stud, I mean

Halver24 (Madison, WI)

Hey Matthew, You hate Moss and love Gaffney. I have both and only one spot to fill. Who do you go with?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:08 PM)

Moss "safer" but Gaffney has more upside. If you are a safe type player, go Moss. If you are more of a gambling type, go Gaffney

Glenn (NYC)

What side of Nicks and Wells do you like rest of season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:09 PM)

Nicks. Beanie has been better than I thought but still not totally sold.

Brian (Chicago)

With the law firm battling a toe injury, will you be bumping up stevan ridley in your rankings?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:09 PM)

No - Law Firm practiced fully today.

Josh (LA)

I've read the columns and seen the rankings, but seriously.....you're telling people to start cam newton over brady?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:12 PM)

No. Do I think Cam ends up with better numbers this week than Brady? Yes. It's why I ranked them that way. But I would never say "You must bench Brady" - if you don't feel comfortable doing it, stay safe with Brady. Can never go wrong with starting Tom Brady, but if you wanna go Cam, I certainly have no issue. Cam HAS outscored Brady each of the last 2 weeks, by the way

Jahvid Best (Detroit )

Remember you said you had no faith in me last week ? Well i proved you wrong Mr. Berry. Im ready to prove you wrong again this sunday and when i do you'll have to shout me out in your podcast cause your my motivation

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:13 PM)

We'll see. One great play and a bunch of pedestrian ones... but it all counts. We'll see. SF has a pretty good run defense... that said - I have you ranked fairly well this week.

Jimmy R (Florida)

Matthew, phenominal call on your ten lists of tens with Fred Jackson and Matt Forte! Im having a tough time with my flex spot. Felix, Jordy, Shonn, Santonio.. Not sure if Felix will be used enough, and have a good feeling about Jordy, whatcha thinking?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:16 PM)

Thanks. For all the crap I get on Vick, I wouldn't mind a little love on Fred Jackson...I like Felix this week - you saw what Greene did to NE last week and I like Felix more than Shonn. You can run on NE.But listen - vs STL? No issue with Jordy either...

Sarah Bell (Madison)

Matthew, still trying to figure out your Love/Hate. You have Helu as a Love and Carter as a Hate this week. But you rank Carter above Helu. So if I asked you this week who would you start between the two would you respond "check my weekly rankings" or "Check my Love/Hate?"

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:17 PM)

Answer is always "Check the rankings" - as of now, with no clear insight into WSH run game...I have Carter at 32 and Helu at 35, so they are close, but yes, I'd go Carter in a vacuum, even though I don't love him...

Mo (Chicago)

Hey Matt, how about some buy-low candidates to target with trades? Would you buy low on Felix Jones? SJax? **Warning** this requires some actual analysis!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:21 PM)

Any Cowboy or Charger - think they are both going to explode. Mario Manningham is better than this. So is Larry Fitzgerald. I like the S Jax call as well - good sked coming up

Aaron (Philly)

No question here. Just wanted to tell you, talking smack on Stephania about something you've done multiple times in the past is totally a "That Guy" move. Way to be that guy.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:23 PM)

Hahahaha. Stephania and Pod had both done in the past as well - we all had. But we made a specific rule last year that we were taking up too much time of the tech guys - so, going forward - if you missed, too bad. Period. Stephania went around the system we have in place... that's the issue. But fair enough - I just thought it was funny.

Coach Andy Reid (Philadelphia, PA)

Do I have a job in Philly next year?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:23 PM)

Yes.

Jeff (CT)

Hey Matt,What's your take on Ahmad Bradshaw versus Ryan Torain? With Jacobs out it's hard to pass up Bradshaw against that soft Buffalo defense, but then again, assuming (and this is a big assumption!) Torain gets the majority of carries, it's hard to pass up a matchup against their weak LB core. What do you think?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:24 PM)

Give me the guy NOT coached by Shanny. Bradshaw

Steve (NY)

You're an idiot.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:26 PM)

And yet, you're here listening to me...

Adam (Newtown, PA)

TMR, what are your thoughts on Lloyd and Harvin ROS? Both under-acheiving bigtime. If you could deal them both for AJ, would you?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:27 PM)

Yes, I would

E (SF)

Got any new guilty pleasure shows we should be checking out?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:28 PM)

Still a fan of the new 90210. Terrible show that I love watching every week. Never miss an episode. Seriously.

Me (Here)

Mr Berry- Would you rather have a boring/low ceiling guy (L. Moore) or a possible up-and-comer (G. Little) on your bench as a WR4 or a WR5? Thanks and keep up the great work

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:30 PM)

When it comes to depth, I always go upside. The "safe" type guys will always be there in free agency

Sam (Lowery)

Battle ROS. Talk to me Goose!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:31 PM)

Low end #2. He'll get majority of carries but not a great schedule - probably a matchup play if there were no byes.

WR Waiver Addict (Waiver Wire)

TMR, the basis for your theory for being high on Antonio Brown vs. JAX intrigues me. Due to byes, stuck starting D. Nelson/DHB. Drop one of Floyd/Decker/D. Moore/Walter for him? Given my options, doesn?t seem that risky to start Antonio. Help me out bud...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:31 PM)

I would drop Walter for him

Roy (Denver)

Heads or tails? Heads Cruz...Tails Best? .5ppr

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:32 PM)

Best

Brett (DC)

So my wife wanted to play in a league with me this season, i said ok and its been nice, she actually watches more football with me and reads your stuff... however we played last week and she beat me (handily) and has broadcast it to all our friends on FB... would you let the CMR ever play in a league with you? How would you handle it if she beat you?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:34 PM)

I would totally let the CMR play in a league with me and I would just laugh if she beat me - she knows close to nothing about sports or football. I'll have the game on and she'll say stuff like "who has the ball?" "What do you call the guy who throws?... The quarterback?... Yeah, him."

Ron (Dayton)

Matthew, are you one of those who still doesn't trust Manningham enough to start over Colston? Manningham has a sorry Buffalo pass defense this Sunday and Colston hasn't scored in 5 games against Tampa. Please explain.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:35 PM)

Hard to "trust" Mario after the last few weeks. I do still believe in him but no, I'd start Colston. Buf also has a bad run defense and you could see a bunch of Bradshaw

Andrew (NY)

You see any "fantasy starters" in the Rams or Browns receiving corps ROS?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:37 PM)

I like the skill and potential of Greg Little, yes. And eventually - one of the Rams will emerge. Kind of think it might Danario Alexander but just a guess

Cliffard (Tempe)

Since you dropped S. Greene 5 spots on your Friday Rankings are you taking him off of your love list and Starting SJax against GB.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:38 PM)

Yes, I'd go SJax

Frank (Beans)

Can you comment on the Brandon Marshall statement? Does that make him a better play? I really dount he intends to get ejected.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:39 PM)

Just that with Matt Moore at QB and Revis on Marshall I don't think he's a great play, regardless of the statement

Matt (NYC)

I don't think you ever live down your "Pick Vick no. 1" proclamation from the beginning of this season. It's your Chad Ford "Greg Oden will be a HOFer" moment, if you will. Do you disagree?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:46 PM)

I do. Completely. I respect Chad a great deal and disagree with your implied assesment of him, but I'll play along.I don't think that's a fair comparison - I mean, Vick HAS averaged 18.6 fantasy points a game. Still pretty good. And the season is not over yet.I might have been one of the few to have him #1 overall but almost everyone had him as a first round pick, so you're talking the difference of a handful of picks. Not that those picks aren't valuable - they are - but certainly, he's been a better first round pick this year than Charles, CJ2K, Andre, Arian...Finally, every single time I said "Take Vick #1" I also said "high risk, high reward" - anyone that took Vick #1 had to know there was a risk with that - and I said it was not a strategy for the weak of heart."Finally, part of the argument was that in a 10 team league there would be enough FA QB's to fill in should something happen to Vick. And with Cam, Fitzpatrick, etc - that's also proven true...So no. I think the people that criticize that pick don't understand fantasy sports or understand the nature of the recommendation I made in the first place.

Tom (NC)

Would you trade Calvin Johnson for Lesean Mccoy?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:47 PM)

I don't think I would trade Calvin for anyone.

Steve (NC)

Does Decker's value jump if Lloyd is traded? do you think he can do well with Tebow taking the snaps?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:48 PM)

I do, yes. If lloyd is there, I think Tebow hyrts Decker's value. Without Lloyd, I like Decker more for sure

Josh (CA)

Is it true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease? Who has the most upside this week? Little, Wayne or James Jones?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:49 PM)

Sometimes. But mostly, interesting questions get the grease. Little has most upside. Wayne safest

JDK (ATL)

Matthew, I love and respect your self-deprecating style. A real mensch. Question: Paycheck aside, do you ever feel fantasy is a waste of time, esp football. You have no control over injuries or maddening inconsistencies from so-called studs. Really, it's luck, yet we still obsess...why?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:50 PM)

Thanks. A waste of time? NO. But is there a fair amount of luck involved or attempts at predicting the future fairly futile? Of course. This is a pretty good column I wrote two years ago about this very subject: http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/football/ffl/story?page=TMR091105

my name (my location)

First off I am ashamed as a veteran fantasy player that I dont know what ROS means so please explain that and secondly, who do I trade away because i have a surplus of rbs. shonn greene, beanie wells, and jahvid best? dont know which guy will do better overall this season.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:52 PM)

Rest Of Season.I'd probably deal Beanie. No confidence in his health or the AZ offensive line and feel you'll get most value for him. But I think all those guys are a bit sell high, so whichever one brings you the most back

Minnesota Defense (Min)

Do we have a good chance of shutting the down the cubs...yes I know they are the bears, but they are playing like cubs! Except Forte and maybe Cutler to some degree...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:53 PM)

I actually think the Vikes are a sneaky good fantasy defense play this week

Fred (NYC)

Regarding not trading calvin, we just wasted an hour of time at work arguing why i should be allowed calvin and ridley vs fitz and cj2k. i ended up getting calvin.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:54 PM)

Fair value. Rather have Calvin but no issue with the deal

Taco (It has been decided)

I remember you mentioned a few weeks back you filmed a part in The League, whens your episode going to be on? Any tease as to what you'll be doing?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:55 PM)

Next week's episode - the OCt 20th one. I play myself. Let's leave it at that.

Nate (MN)

Why Starks over the law firm and Greene this week?? Starks splits carries and really hasn't proven himself.. Thanks

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:58 PM)

Starks is the better runner and I love the match-up - feel GB gets up so much they can't help but run in the second half. Grant is being used for blocking more than anything it seems....Law Firm has tough matchup (DAL #1 run d) and when I did the ranks, he had missed practice on Thurs.Greene - decent match-up and I like him this week but he doesn't have crazy upside. He hasn't really proven himself either.

Chris (Seattle)

My wife says she is better at Fantasy Football than you are.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (2:59 PM)

Did you really just need to have your wife talk smack for you? That's the saddest thing I've read in my life.

Zack (Madison)

Equivocate. Listen, Equivocate. Unless Equivocate, then I have no problem with Equivocate. If you are the kind of player who Equivocates, then play equivocate and not equivocate.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:04 PM)

I'm not even sure you know what that means. You know, it's hilarious. One side: How dare you say Vick at #1? How can you pick Starks this week when he hasn't proven anything? How can you make )insert bold stand someone doesn't agree with).Your side: How dare you give reasoned analysis showing multiple sides of something that has a lot of variables and is impossible to predict with 100% accuracy?Zach, in all seriouness, you're the kind of guy who takes the fun out of fantasy football. Please never read or listen to anything I do again. We have many great writers here at ESPN. Go read any of them. But you're "That guy." I people who try to act better than anyone else. You must be super popular in your own league.

Chris's Wife ((Seattle))

Please tell Chris to get off the internet and get my laundry done.

Mike (DC)

Does Burelson turn it around?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:05 PM)

It's not looking great. Titus Young is emerging a little and after Calvin, Stafford looks mostly to Pettigrew. Hard to trust Nate on a weekly consistent basis.

Bart (Richmond)

3 Redskins RBs in the top 40? Man, I hope you're right...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:08 PM)

Me too. Hightower is questionable, FYI but we talked about this on the podcast. WSH has NO elite playmakers - no guy like Calvin or Peterson or Brady or anyone, frankly, that scares you.The only way they can win is what they do - time of possesion, grind it out, play good defense, keep it close.I expect the 3 RB to touch the ball 35-40 times combined given PHI's run defense and wanting to keep Vick off field.... so yeah.

George (Florida)

Hello. Got a dilema. I won the Jackie Battle sweepstakes in my league and another team in my league is desperate for running backs. He is willing to trade one of his receivers for Jackie Battle straight-up. I have to choose from Dwayne Bowe, Marques Colston, and Deion Branch (He also has Andre Johnson, but won't give him up). I see pros and cons for all of them, but what might be your take? (P.S. I have Ben-Jarvus Green Ellis and LeSean McCoy as my other RB's).

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

I like Colston the most of those for ROS but honestly, we have no idea what Battle can do. He had one good game against a terrible INDY team. I'd deal him for either Bowe or Colston.

Antonio (Mexico)

You hate Marshall on your love/hate list but have him in the top 25, can you explain? Would you play Moore/Jacoby Jones or Torrey Smith over Brandon? GRACIAS!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

I have him at 23. And re-read the article. I explain the premise of the article in there. Thanks.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

Ok gang. Gonna run. Thanks for stopping by. Good luck in week 6!
