Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:01 PM)

Hi, everybody. Coming to you live from the press bunker here in Florham Park. Usually not here on Friday, but this is a Thursday in Jets world -- because of the Monday night game. Let's get started.

Jon (New York)

2 questions: Does itt seem that the Jets' assessment of the abilities of Shaun Ellis, Jericho Cotchery and Jason Taylor were accurate, based upon their performance so far this year? As far as the offense is concerned, why no screens or Wildcat formations? The offense has become so predicatable that the defense knows what is coming.

Rich Cimini
  (1:02 PM)

Ellis, JCo and JT haven't done much of anything this year, but I do think the Jets miss their leadership. You're right the offense is predictable. Don't have the stats handy, but I think the Jets are near the bottom in terms of screen passes. You might see more Wildcat now that Kerley will be on the field more.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, The Jets right now seem to have loads of problems. But with Kerley as the #3 which i am excited about and the soon to be expected back Payne and Turner as the # 4 i think they stick with that which leaves them very thin at the WR spot. Any veterans they could bring in or will they only do that if Holmes or Edwrads gets hurt?

Rich Cimini
  (1:04 PM)

Well, Randy Moss is out there. What about T.O.? Oh, man, if they think they have chemistry problems now ...

Gavin (New York)

If the Jets fail to make the playoffs, who do you blame? Personally, I would blame Tannebaum and the scouting department. The Jets really have missed on picks the last few years, and Tannebaum signed no depth for this team. What is he saving the cap room for?

Rich Cimini
  (1:05 PM)

Let's let the season play out. Flame outs usually arent the fault of one person or one unit. But you can bet someone's head will roll, and it'll probably be Schottenheimer.

Shafer Suggs (New York)

As far as I know, Jerricho hasn't played a down yet for the Steelers - would it be totally out of the realm of possibility that the Jets would reacquire him?

Rich Cimini
  (1:06 PM)

I thought I saw him in uniform in at least 1 game. I could be mistaken. I think it would be a good pick-up to bring him back, but in a trade? They'd look foolish giving up something to get a guy they had in the first place.

Joe (NJ)

With the Jets injury-depleted secondary, think we'll see Joe McKnight play more DB?

Rich Cimini
  (1:07 PM)

I think there's a chance that Strickland will play this week, but I see your point. Rex firmly believes McKnight could be a good DB some day.

Rich Cimini
  (1:09 PM)

Pouha is signed for next yr. Actually, I think he's doing a solid job. The problem is the edges...DEs and OLBs. Just watch, the Dolphins are going to hammer the edges with Bush, run and pass.

Jimmy (Huntington)

I have a theory on why the D can't stop anyone late in games......The offense has too many 3 and outs....thus the D is gassed by the end of the game......Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:11 PM)

All good points. What happened in NE was a bit of an anomaly. On the last drive, the coaches had 7 DBs in the game for the first four plays, thinking Brady would pass. Bad decision. Brady checked to run and picked up chunks on those plays, prompting the Jets to put their regular personnel in the gm

Gary (Brooklyn)

Hey Rich, Is there a possibility the Jets can get Brandon Lloyd for Plaxico or Santonio? Could the Jets get rid of both of them?

Rich Cimini
  (1:12 PM)

No one is trading for Plaxico. Holmes just signed a long-term deal, so there would be significant cap implications. You can't change the whole thing after 5 games.

Jimmy (Huntington)

Any word on Lousaka Polite? Are the Jets not happy with Connor's poor play and looking to add another FB? What about calling T-Rich out of retirement?

Rich Cimini
  (1:14 PM)

That was very curious, bringing in Polite for a workout. But remember, the Jets play the Dolphins this week. They're not ready to discard Conner, but he has to catch the ball. No excuses.

Evan (New York)

Rich, great stuff as usual. One of the chief criticisms of Schotty has been play-calling, but I think the more pressing issue is with his play design. It seems like too many of his routes involve receivers running to the same part of the field, which congests the passing lanes. Cris Collinsworth actually commented on this during the Baltimore game. Is this on anyone's radar?

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

I wrote about that in my post-game analysis after NE. On the third-and-6 in the 3rd Q, they sent out 5 guys and all 5 ran to the sticks. No one went deep. And NE rushed only 3. That's bad play design.

Matt (NY)

What has the reaction been to Joe Namath's comments around the Jets If you ask me, the guy needs to pipe down. He isn't with the Jets on a daily basis so how does he know what goes down on a daily basis.

Rich Cimini
  (1:16 PM)

You're right, he's not with the team on a daily basis, but he played the game and I think he offers insight. A lot of what he says is true.

John (Hillsdale NJ)

Rich do you think Brandon Marshall will actually commit a penalty where he gets ejected or was it just his personality disorder popping off?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

I have no idea, I'm not a doctor. But that was bizarre, wasn't it? Well, he ensured himself of a lot of face time Monday night.

Adam (Great Neck)

Great job, Rich. Our offensive production against one of the worst defenses in the league was inexcusable. Who's on the hottest seat? Any chance the team reassesses whether Sanchez is the right QB for this team?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

No, Sanchez is their guy. That isn't changing.

Lucas (Manhattan)

Rich, my bro and I have long had a theory: Woody loves Schotty, guaranteed him total autonomy over the offense when Rex was hired, and gave him a contract with a large payout should he ever be terminated. Could that explain why the team appears so protective of Schotty, or why Rex seems so careful about interfering with the offense?

Rich Cimini
  (1:19 PM)

Your theory isn't that far off. I think Woody and Tannenbaum wanted Rex to retain Schotty, and, yes, they're paying him well. Total autonomy? Not really. If Rex wants to become more run-oriented, as he did last wk, he instructs Schotty to follow through.

Jeff (NYC)

I know it's only 5 games, but was it mistake to cut ties with Braylon?

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

Do they miss him? Kinda, yeah, but he was never coming back...unless they offered him Holmes money.

Aaron (Syracuse, NY)

Rich, love the work you do covering the jets! my question is: what do you feel are the three biggest concerns/weaknesses on this roster right now in terms of personnel? I would have to go with OLB, Safety, and OL depth. In general, I feel this team is severey lacking overall speed, which is the direct result of some poor drafting. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

I'd agree with all that. Speed is lacking in the front 7 and they could use a little more speed on offense. The Ducasse pick really hurts them. Wilson is getting better. Gholston ... ugh!

Kenny (NYC)

Rich,Do you think Santonio was a wise choice as one of the teams captains? As a writer following the Jets, I'm sure you welcome his comments to the media, but it seems it's getting to the point where it's becoming disruptive and I can't see Mangold & Brick being pleased with the way the situation is being addressed by one of the leaders of the offense. What's your take?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

Rex named Holmes a captain to give him ownership in the team, make him feel important. The job should've gone to Mangold, Moore or LT, along with Sanchez. Now, Holmes thinks he runs the place.

Marc (NJ)

Hey Rich,What has been your impression of how Slauson, Moore, and Hunter have played to this point? Holmes probably shouldn't have called out his offensive line, but he certainly seems to have a point.

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

Never call out a teammate or a unit. That's the unwritten code of the locker room. Hunter got off to a awful start, but he has settled down. The interior hasn't been doing a great job in the running game. Greene one of the lowest-rated RBs for runs up the middle.

Jason (MI)

What do you think of Kris Jenkins' implication on a radio interview that nepotism is involved with Schotty still having a job?

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

I like Kris, but that is off base.

David (New York)

Rich, Tone was wrong to again talk to the media. But he is right, the Jets need to take a shot down field, I don't care if Sanchez throws the ball 20 yards beyond everyone. Having everyone packed within 15 yards makes it tough to operate.

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

You're right, they're playing on a 20-yard field. Tough to operate that way, but when your QB is getting hit on 3-step drops, what are they supposed to do?

sam (boulder, co)

Is kerely going to make a big impact in the weeks to come? Can you see him getting more reps than plaxico? and what about scotty mcknight

Rich Cimini
  (1:29 PM)

Kerley will be the No. 3 WR. No, he won't get more reps than Plax...unless Plax gets hurt. McKnight is on the practice, and Logan Payne just got the cast off his wrist. So maybe he can be ready after the bye.

angry Jets fans (everywhere)

Please explain on 3rd and 6, how do the Jets go to an empty/5 wide formation....and have all the WR's run a 4 yard curl route?

Rich Cimini
  (1:30 PM)

Great question. I don't have a great answer.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, Mr T. has sure brought in some great players and drafted some stars over the years. I can forgive him for guys that didn't pan out in the draft, because every team does that. But what really bugs me is how much he's tinkered with the offense in the past 2+ seasons, the Rex/Sanchez era. He's dismantled a great O-Line, swapped all RBs/FBs, and has turned over most of the WRs ever year. I would think that you'd want to have stability around your rookie QB and feel that Sanchez would have been better off now in his third year if he had that. What do you think ?

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

LT for Thomas Jones was a good move. I didn't like the Faneca move, but Slauson turned out OK. Should've kept Woody. You're right, they need more stability at WR. You can't keep changing.

Matt (Madison)

Rich, While Schotty, Sanchez and the Offesnse seem to be taking most of the heat during this tough stretch, hasn't the defense been equally cuplable? They LB's look slow and old and can't set the edge. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:33 PM)

That was obviously the case in Oakland. McFadden made them pay.

Walter (New York)

Rich, I go to the games and can actually see the whole field when the offense is playing and it is clear from my perspective that the play calling is not the issue. There are a number of factors that are the reason for the offense struggling. I was watching "Audibles" last night and I saw Trent Dilfer say that he reviewed the tape of the Jets games and says that the widereceivers are open on almost every play. He does not think it is the play calling. He believes that it is a number of other factors, like penalties, drop balls, over throws, oline protection and missing open wrs. I agree with him. Obviously Holmes does too. Play calling is not the problem. The problems are deeper than that, but why in the word does Holmes keep opening his mouth? This is one of the reasons that I wanted the Jets to keep Braylon Edwards over Holmes. Do you think that Holmes' is going to be a determinant to the team going forward?

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

I agree, it's not all playcalling. Pass protection is the central issue. Sanchez still has accuracy issues, and there have been 10 drops, among the most in the league. And I agree, Holmes needs to put a sock in it.

John (Fornazor)

Is it me or does Bart Scott look painfully slow this year?

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

He's had some good games and some bad games.

Chris (NJ)

How would you rate Wilkerson's play so far? And do you think Ellis will play anytime soon?

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Mo Wilk has been OK. I think he's going to be a good one. He couldn't get off a block on one of NE's TD runs, but that's going to happen. As for Ellis, who knows? I don't think Pitoitua will play this week, so let's see who dresses as the 5th DLM, Ellis or Tevaseu. If Ellis sits, wow, that would be an indictment.

Mike (Princeton)

It seems like Rex handled the Mason trade like Belichick or Parcells would, but then he bumbled the message to the press because he wanted to save his "player's coach" image. Is that an accurate perception from your veiw or am I off and this really was about Kerley?

Rich Cimini
  (1:38 PM)

I agree with the first part. He didn't want to trash Mason to the media. He always tells his players that he has their back, and how would it look if he went public and trashed Mason for being a bad apple? The mere act of unloading Mason got the message across. No explanation needed.

Anthony (Queens, NY)

Do you think the recent trades, Lowery and now Mason for 7th round picks are a sign of the Jets acquiring more picks to build depth?

Rich Cimini
  (1:39 PM)

Yeah, the Jets are going to dominate the seventh round.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, I'm not even sure what would be helpful at this point, but do you think the Jets make any trades before the deadline ? The only one that sounds remotely appealing from the rumors is someone like Mathis. Do you see anything coming ?

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

I've heard the Mathis rumor, but how does he fit in? He's too small to be an every-down player in the Jets' scheme. Are you going to give up a lot for a situational rusher?

Anthony (NYC)

Rich it was reported that a GM said the Jets were trying to move Mason as of last week , but yet the Jets are still getting hammered by the media for assuming Mason was moved for talking. Whats the best way for the Jets to clear this up?

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

I was the one who reported that they were shopping him last week. I think he was dumped for a lot of reasons -- bad influence in the LR, comments, not putting in extra study time, and, yes, production.

Greg (New Jersey)

Did you see Brad Smith's comments on having no regrets about leaving the Jets? I looked at his stats - the bills are barely using him. I could see him being cut after the year due to salary, and resigning with the Jets. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

You never know in this business. The Jets think very highly of Smith.

Brittany (Houston)

Great job Rich. Do you have any concerns about team unity right now, in light of the Mason move, Santonio's complaints, and our record?

Rich Cimini
  (1:43 PM)

Yes, there's a weird vibe in the locker room. I sense unrest. They need to beat Mia or this could blow up.

Terry (Michigan)

One of the few bright spots this year has been special teams play, and Joe McKnight, in particular. Kudos to Westhoff, especially after losing B. Smith. Do you see the team trying to get McKnight more involved in the offense?

Rich Cimini
  (1:44 PM)

You're right, McKnight has been terrific, but they might not have used him if it hadn't been for the ribs injury to Cromartie.

jay price (NY)

Rich it seems like everyone is dogging the facts about why we are 2-3 i just want to ask you if you we go 0-3 in the next three game do you think it would be good for a QB change meaning activating greg mc leroy

Rich Cimini
  (1:44 PM)

McElroy is done for the year...IR

Chris (Somerset, NJ)

Hi Rich: Last week you proclaimed that Don Maynard was the greatest WR that the jets have had. I have to disagree. Wesley Walker was the best the Jets have had, and he has not been relpaced since. I'll take Walker over Maynard any day. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:45 PM)

I didn't see Wes in his prime, but the stats say he was a tremendous vertical threat. But Maynard was a dominant player. Take a closer look at his numbers. Remember, they played 14 games in those days.

David (Atlanta)

Will the Jets make Holmes happy and throw ball deep this week?

Rich Cimini
  (1:46 PM)

Prediction: First play, go route to Holmes.

Larry (Holmdel)

Rich, great writing as always. I've followed you since your days at the Daily News. Woody was a huge loss, and I miss J-Co more than ever. He thought like a QB. Now with Bryan Thomas out for the year, does he even re-sign? Or do you go right for speed and youth at OLB because we are clearly lacking there.

Rich Cimini
  (1:47 PM)

Thanks for the kind words, Larry. Gonna be tough to re-sign BT because of his agen and the injury. They need to get younger at OLB. That certainly will be the No. 1 priority in the draft.

Sean ((PHILA))

With the trade deadline coming, if you had to make any type of prediction, who, what position, if any do you see the Jets trying to improve with a trade. As I told you on Twitter...I think a good trade could fire people up again about this team.

Rich Cimini
  (1:48 PM)

It's a good thought, but the question is, who? Brandon Lloyd? He's in the final yr of his contract and he'll be looking for Holmes money. Could be a 1-yr rental. The Jets should keep their draft picks and start rebuilding their depth.

Joseph (Dutchess County)

The Jets have problems because of Santonio Holmes talking but there is one way to fix this, WIN!!!! Do you think if the jets win the next few games people will forget about the Homes and Mason drama?

Rich Cimini
  (1:49 PM)

Two wins before the bye will cure everything ... well, almost everything.

Brian (NY)

I understand Santonio's frustration with the O-line, but I think its the play calling that is causing the most problem. Too many short passes have brought defenses up. Schotty needs to add in a play every now and then that has Sanchez heave the ball down field. Even if its not caught the threat will open up some space underneath. What do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (1:50 PM)

I agree totally. You have to take some shots. You have to keep the safeties from playing close to the line of scrimmage.

Gordon (MD)

Sanchez doesn't seem comfortable unless there is urgency to score quickly. How do the Jets get him comfortable in less hurried situations? Or, do you think the Jets should be attempting more hurry-up type offense, even if they're running out of it?

Rich Cimini
  (1:51 PM)

They should try more hurry-up, but Schottenheimer isn't a big believer. I think it's a good change-of-pace.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, I thiught the OL showed improvement last week and hope it continues if the Jets are going to get their season going. I don't by that the Hunter move has thrown this OL all out of whack. Your thoughts on their struggles besides the Mangold injury and Moore not 100%?

Rich Cimini
  (1:52 PM)

yes, the OL showed improvement last week. And so did Greene. He really ran with a purpose and broke tackles. They also used some misdirection. That old "swerve" play got some use.

Sal (San Diego)

Hi Rich...with the rush blocking not being at its best wouldn't it make sense to give some touches to Mcknight? Lets face it, Greene is a North/South guy and they need an elusive back who can compensate for blocking problems.

Rich Cimini
  (1:53 PM)

They need more speed in the backfield, yet despite all of his contributions on special teams, McKnight hasn't earned the trust of the coaches to carry the ball.

angry Jets fans (everywhere)

Is there any way at all the Jets will make a change at OC mid-season?

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

If they lose the next 2, they have the bye week. Read into that what you will.

Richard Caster (Al Toona, PA)

Are the Jets sort of the opposite of the Yankees in that they're more set up for success in the playoffs as opposed to the regular season?

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

Yeah, but it's 16 games, not 162. If you have a bad month in football, you're toast.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, Bottom line are the Jets going to the playoffs?

Rich Cimini
  (1:55 PM)

Well, Ira, according to recent history, they have a 21 pct chance. That's the stat on 2-3 teams going to the playoffs. I'd say it's not looking good.

Matt (White Plains)

Do you think the Jets are going to make any moves before the trade deadline? They could use help in multiple places.

Rich Cimini
  (1:56 PM)

Yes, I definitely think Tannenbaum could make a move, maybe for a pass rusher.

noosh (san diego)

Is it really time to hit full panic mode? I feel like the team is only one win behind where I expected them to be. I mean, c'mon, they played three really good teams on the road in row. How many other teams have had to do that this season??

Rich Cimini
  (1:58 PM)

You're right, the schedule has been tough. But it's how they've played that's so alarming. Bad defense in Oakland. Bad offense in Baltimore. Lousy start in NE. Bad run defense in NE.

Jim (Bellmore)

At what point do we start thinking Shonn Green may not be an NFL starter? Or do you attribute his slow start to be more of a result of the o-line's inability to create a gap?

Rich Cimini
  (1:58 PM)

He just had his best game of the year.

Andrew (Washington D.C.)

Hey Rich, looking forward I believe the Jets can turn things around this week. However, do you think Joe Namath's banter over the past couple of weeks has affected team morale? Both players and coaches? Also, what are you thoughts on Cro? Honestly, he doesn't seem worth the price tag; he is an above average corner but not elite. Look at last week where Cro's interception had nothing to do with his talent, rather the lack of talent by Hernanez in catching the ball. That being said, is our d worse than last year an over paid?

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

Namath's criticisms have been a non-factor in the locker room. Cro is a good player who could be great if he plays with more focus and more discipline.

Rich Cimini
  (2:00 PM)

Sorry, I'm out of time. Thanks again for checking in. Terrific questions, as per usual. Enjoy the game Mon night. I think the Jets will win, but it'll be a struggle. Have a great weekend! Rich
