Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (2:59 PM)

And once again I say hello and welcome to another fun hour of Q&A with the caddie that will tell you the truth about what's going on, inside and outside the ropes. Ready?

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Is anyone ok with Tom Lehman asking for and receiving a sponsors invite this week to Disney?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Coldest PGA Golf Tournament that you have been to?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Turning Stone, easy. It was sleeting and we were playing. I was caddying in a ski jacket and full face mask winter cap, for two days!

Steve Elling (Orlando)

Hey Mike, I need to wash my car before heading to Disney. I figured you were probably trying to get rid of some of your Phillies shirts. Bring 'em by. Rims are really dirty.

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

I would love to give em to you but most of them kept a homeless guy warm last weekend as he used them for kindling in his steel trash barrel

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

And since when does the great Steve Elling put rims on his ride?!

mark (raleigh)

webb has to be player of the year. sure luke has achieved number 1 status but if webb next year replicates luke's year he had this year considering where webb is now and the fact he is allowed to play wgc tournaments and the majors now he will probably achieve number 1 too. This year webb has out played anyone on tour not just statistically but also with proof of having 2 wins and 3 2nd place finishes (2 of which were playoff losses)

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

two wins and three seconds... but no majors. You know how many POY's Phil has?

Chris (NJ)

whats with some of the pros saying "i didnt even know where the lead was" when refering to starting their rounds, either 3rd or 4th?

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Ben Crane is INFAMOUS for never looking at a leaderboard until Sunday after the tourney and there are a few guys like that on tour, but not many

Kevin (alabama)

What happened to the phillies?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

careful, I'm still close to being on suicide watch because of my team! ;)

Zach (My Desk)

If you had to place a big chunk of change on a wager of who will be the highest ranked American player at this time next year, who would it be and where would they be ranked?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I'd take Webb and say he'll be 5th or better

Nick (Md)

Mike, Im heading up to Scottsdale in April for a week of golf. which courses should i def put on the list?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

find a way on to Troon, gotta play TPC, and beg borrow and plead onto Whisper Rock. TPC is your best shot though

Adam (Work)

How do most pros get their clubs from course to course...commerical airlines or FedEX? I would think FedEX would be the much safer choice rather than having the baggage guys/gals just throwing your living aroud.

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

they either take them with on the plane or there is actually a guy that drives a truck from tournament to tournament carrying clubs and family gear for players. Smart guy when he came up with the idea.

Ted Muller (Paso Robles CA )

If you had a chance to caddy for any player other than Tiger in The Masters who would you pick?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out if there was ONE guy I'd caddy for... and I can't come up with one. Only because if I had a chance to caddy the Masters for anyone, I'd jump at it. It's still on my caddy bucket list.

Steve E. (Orlando)

International captain Greg Norman said he would not have picked Tiger for the PrezCup based on current form. Is he right?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Nope... Well yes if he wouldn't have said it, but since he opened his mouth I hope Tiger does to him what he did to Stephen Ames. I am worried if Stricker doesn't play that Tiger may have lost his best partner

Zach (My Desk)

Crane and Webb are both notoriously slow players... Do you think the tour should do anything to peanlize or discourage players from playing too slow? If so, what should they do? Major junior tournaments have put a major emphasis on reducing slow play this year

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I don't think the tour has the cojones to start taking strokes. they fine players now but if you were making $3mil a year but in order to make that money you had to pay the tour 30k, so what? I'd write a check Jan. 1 and say, "don't call me"

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I laughed out loud, but you know I can't post that come back Steve!

Steve E. (Orlando)

One last question: If Tiger or Jack had grabbed a major among their two wins in a season, and NOBODY else had more than two wins all year, would we even be discussing whether they were Player of the Year? In other words, with the Webb/Luke discussion raging, what about Keegan Bradley?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Go back and look at every POY and tell me the most cuts any has ever missed. Keegan has 10 MC's, he can't be a lock because POY is about consistency, I could argue Bill Lunde has been more consistent

Shoshana (Boston)

Hey it all worked out for Crane, but gotta tell you I'm not impressed by a guy talking about things being more important than golf, and perspective when he chose to play in a random fall series event with 2 kids and a wife at home about to give birth

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

you can't be mad at someone for going to work. Don't forget it's what we do for a job. And where have you been?! ;)

Mike (Dc)

pick one course you would want to me a member at (excluding pine valley and augusta & cypress)

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Whisper Rock, Monterrey Peninsula, or Black Diamond

Mark (Cali)

Who do you like winning the bid to design the course for RIO?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

20th Century Fox, no wait I thought you meant the movie! My bad... would love to see... truth is I don't have a favorite designer or team

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

sorry but that's the truth

Justin (Ohio)

What "Exhibition" event are most looking forward to this off season?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Chevron

Zach (My Desk)

Have you gotten a chance to see Tom Lewis play in person? Very impressive to see him win his third professional start at just 20 years old... Saw him at US Amateur this year, and his swing is as pure as you'll find

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I haven't seen him in person, but I trust Rory Mc and Justin Rose, and when they are impressed... that's good enough for me

Mark (Cali)

how long after a tourny does a guy get the check?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

It's in his bank account on Monday morning

Shoshana (Boston)

Not mad at Disney for giving Lehman the sponsors invite, they have to look out for their bottom line. Little mad at Lehman for asking, classless move

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

you think Lehman will bring more people than Cauley? Bud's from Jacksonville Beach, he'd have a bus load rolling down 95.

Marc (Charlotte)

It's a sponsors invite. The sponsor can give it to whomever they want. End of story. I've got a bigger deal with Jeff Quinney whining that Luke Donald and Webb Simpson are both going after the money title this week.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

yes but it's a double edge sword my friend, when Cauley blows up they better not come blowing kisses at him then cause you know where they'll be kissing. That's the bottom line, who helps the future of your event?

Justin (Ohio)

Do you see The Presidents Cup being around in say 20 years or so? Does it have longevity?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

yeah, and now that they've switched up the playoffs schedule it gives it more legs

Nate (Li)

Whats the better Pro hang out/ living spot. Jupiter Area or Sea Island?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

Jupiter but it's close, and Scottsdale isn't far behind

Dave (NH)

Whats up with Bud Cauley's pops? did you see him 2 weeks ago at the Frys? he was going nuts after a missed putt.

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

The man has passion, and wants to see his son do well, what you didn't see were the tears streaming down his face after the round on Sunday cause he was so proud of his son. The guys' the real deal. And he's not an overbearing parent like you might think, just an intense guy that wants to see his son succeed, but is proud of him no matter what

Justin (Ohio)

How do your Eagles only beat the Redskins by 7 points after Rex Grossman throws 4 interceptions?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

we're that good

Bob (In)

Are the greens that much easier to putt on the champions tour or is Freddie just that much more relaxed on the champions tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

not easier, just a little slower and not all tucked 3 paces off the edge. But he's more comfy too, only three rounds so it's easier on his back

Matt (Chicago)

Bigger future - Bud Cauley or Billy Horschel?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Cauley, Horschel will be big Cauley be bigger

Chris (Mich)

Like Bill Haas, whose the next kid of a pro to hit the tour? i guess besides Tway for Ok st, and possibly Singhs son

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Davis Love III's son Drew, if he sticks with it, he could be better than his dad. Scary

Marc (Charlotte)

That wasn't your question, Michael.

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

what's the question?

Shoshana (Boston)

Well nobody said Disney had made the smartest business decision :) Just saying more irritated at Lehman for asking, sponsors can give the invite to who they like

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Well I also better say we just call it "Disney" but it's not really run by the Mouse (my new boss by the way) so I'm not saying, I'm just saying, if any of my bosses are reading this... I did clarify!! :)

Sam (NJ)

When is Tiger going to step out with his new lady or new celebrity he will be dating?.. a la Derek Jeter Style...

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

Never. When has he ever "showed off" anything? Not his style.

Shoshana (Boston)

NYC has to be one of my fav nicknames in golf. Who you got?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

Whose nickname is NYC?

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Any news on Mike Weir? Has his game gone that far in the tank or are his injuries just piling up?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

No news. But the injury bug may have bitten him too hard to ever get back to the level a lot of us lefties hope to see.

Sam (NJ)

continuation from ym tiger question...seems like a lot of these guys meet their GFs in college before they become big time...what about the guys who are single... are there pga tour groupies that follow these guys everywhere?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

not groupies per se, but like any professional sport there are women who try to put themselves in a position to meet and hook up with a golfer or caddie

John (Fl)

How much access to friends of tour players get during a given week on the tour? what kind of behind the scenes action is there?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

I don't understand the question?

sam (NJ)

Caddie?? i be they are all over that action, huh?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Not nearly as much as you'd think. Sorry to ruin your fantasy

Shoshana (Boston)

Who is the most fun personality wise of the young guys? shows the most passion on the GC? (cursing allowed)

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

that's two different questions. I have about 10 guys I like hanging out with on occasion on tour. And Horschel is the guy always waiting to blow a gasket on the course.

John (Fl)

my friend had a client who was a member of Augusta, got hooked up with dinner in the clubhouse among other things. If you were a pro playing at Augusta or somewhere else what kind of access to the facilitites would you be able to show friends?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Well most pros families have badges that get them access to special areas in the clubhouse. It's like a family box at a baseball or football game.

Mark (ark)

How hated is Rory Sabb on the tour?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Not hated at all, and if you played with him in a pro am you'd brag to your friends about how great he was. Amazing what tv can do... ask Vijay

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

That went too fast!!! Thanks again for the questions, and for those of you that know, if you email me questions at espncaddie@gmail.com I'll answer! Talk to ya soon.
