Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:01 PM)

What's up? Sitting at my desk in one of the coolest hotels I've been in this year - St. Louis' Union Station Marriott is a rebuilt train station - with about 2 hours before I go talk to some of the Rangers at Busch Stadium. We've got about 45 minutes to chat, so let's roll...BTW, listening to Darius Rucker, Adele and Lodesi this AM

Elliot B. (NRH,TX)

Is Garrett the right man for the job, or does he just need a offensive coordinator?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

It doesn't matter. He's going to keep the job and continue to call plays. Jerry likes his head coach to do that, which is why he demanded Chan Gailey do it and why he had Wade Phillips do it. He thinks it helps for the team to see the true impact the head coach makes. As for Garrett, I think he's a good offensive coordinator. Too many folks question the play call every time a play doesn't work. That said, he can be criticized for the last drive as well as some of this red zone calls. Doing so, though, you have to make sure you don't miss the big picture which is that he muzzled Tony Romo. If you don't like the play selection, then Romo is to blame even moreso than Garrett.

Rosie ybarra (,alvin,txtx)

will thecowboys make it the playoffs?

Rudy Curiel (Loma Linda, CA)

The NFL isn't fining Harbaugh or Schwartz...your thoughts ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

Irrelevant to me. No punches thrown, just a lot of woofing. I thought it was fun to see two emotional coaches going at it.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

@Rosie: I didn't think Dallas was going to make the playoffs before the season, and I don't think so now. This is a rebuilding season whether they choose to admit it or not

msjay263 (dallas)

How long do we give Romo before you have to start looking for a new quarterback for this team.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

Romo is your QB for the next two seasons. After that, we'll see. But if the Cowboys want to make a change, then they need to draft one the top 2 rounds next season and give the dude a couple of years to get ready.

Sacco (Rhode Island)

Hey JJT, what do you think about Phillip tanner maybe getting some carries if Felix is out next Sunday? And if we were to cut ties with Choice is there any Rb's on the trade block? i just feel neither Felix or choice is a dependable running back and show now glimpse of being elite at their position.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

Forgive me, I just can't get excited about a undrafted FA RB. He's been terrific on special teams and I have love for any DISD product, but he's not going to be a difference-maker this year. The OL is awful. Jim Brown couldn't gain 1,000 yards with these dudes.

Big Rog Dog (Sin City, Nevada)

With Bill Nagy going on the IR list, does that open up a spot for the Cowboys to bring Bruce Carter from the NFI list without cutting someone?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

Perhaps. But David Buehler might be on the chopping block, if they need a roster spot.

nate (keyman)

do you think the cowboys are going trade somebody by the trade deadline.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

Brandon (Lewisville)

I noticed you picked the Tigers to beat the Rangers and called the Mavericks "chokers." Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

Can you at least get it all the way right. For the record, I picked the Rangers to beat the Rays in 5 and the Tigers to beat the Rangers in 7 - clearly, I don't respect the Rangers since I thought the series would go 7. I picked the Mavs to beat the Blazers, and referred them to chokers after they blew a 23-point lead in Game 4. That is choking. I picked the Lakers to beat the Mavs, the Mavs to beat OKC and the Heat to beat the Mavs in 7. I also picked the Pats to beat the Cowboys. So I guess I'm not wrong all of the time.

Shani (Dallas, Tx)

Do you think if the Rangers win the World Series and the Mavs now the NBA champs that that will put extra pressure on Jerry Jones to win a Super Bowl? If so, then will he make some moves to aquire star-studded players like he did in the 90's?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

No. Jerry feels pressure to win a Super Bowl every year no matter what the other local franchises do. You can't buy a title. You win a title with terrific player development that's accentuated by smart moves in FA. The Yankees and Red Sox have the two highest pay rolls in baseball and haven't won a title the past few seasons

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Texas Rangers will win the 2011 World Series?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

yes. Like Nolan, I think they'll get it done in 6 games. If the Rangers play their best baseball and the Cards play their best, the Rangers win. If that doesn't happen, then all bets are off. The Rangers have the better lineup, a tad better bullpen and they're more versatile on offense because of their ability to swipe bags. I've still gotta do some research on the Cardinals' defense, but I know the Rangers have been playing terrific defense that past 2 months. Both starting rotations have been sub-par

paul (atlanta)

At what point during the off season did the Jerry and Jason decide to overhaul the OL. Through the first 5 games, there doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that any planning was done.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

Good question. They drafted three offensive lineman, so it was pretty obvious they wanted to make some changes. The big move was when they committed to Phil Costa at center instead of Andre Gurode and opted to go with youngsters at left guard because Montre Holland showed up out of shape. Holland and Leonard Davis are still on the street, so it's not like anyone else thought they could play. The big thing is that the Cowboys are better on the perimeter because their guys can move and make blocks in space, but they are poor creating movement at the line of scrimmage.

tashard choice (valley ranch)

what the chance that i will be trade

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

Before Felix Jones' injury, you were gone. Now, you're here for the rest of the season, bro. Good luck.

Ian (Atl, GA)

I can't believe how hypocritical fans act sometimes. They want to kill Garrett for the conservative playcalling at the end, but if Romo had thrown a pick six during that last drive, ppl would've killed Garrett for letting Romo throw. Everyone knows that the 4 min drill is in effect there(Run on 1st and 2nd, pass on 3rd if needed). The problem should be brought up why this team gained -1 and -2 yards on 1st and 2nd down. If this team were more efficient at the run, then the cowboys have a 3rd and 5 instead of a 3rd and 13. Don't you think more people should be talking about that right now and the lack of red-zone efficiency??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Yes sir. You can't win kicking FGs instead of scoring TDs. They have to get Dez and Witten involved in the red zone, but the bigger option is they have no power running game, so their options are limited when they get close to the goal line.

Pete (Frisco)

It seems like the Cowboys star players aren't stepping up at the end of games and making plays. I think if the people that are paid because they are supposed to be playmakers follow thru (like Megatron and Tom Brady did the past two weeks), the Cowboys are probably looking at 5-0 right now. Is that the difference in the season so far?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

They were never going to be 5-0. They're 2-3, and they should probably be 3-2. They should've beaten the Jets, Lions and Redskins. They should've lost to 49ers and the Pats made plays to win the game, more than Dallas lost it. Even if they threw the ball, we can't assume they would've made a couple of first downs and clinched the win.

TheWho21 (WestCoast)

I had Dallas losing to New England anyway..... but am I alone in thinking they could win their next seven games?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

Bro, what evidence have you seen that this team can play consistently good enough to win consecutive games let alone 7 in a row. They're all going to be close and competitive and they'll either make plays at the end of the game or they won't. 5-2 would be great and 4-3 would be good. But don't be shocked, if they go 3-4. It's not like they play well at home.

Michael Galvan (Mercedes, Texas)

Will the cowboys trade for a big physical back that can run between the tackles and help them in the redzone?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

smttech (Heart of DC)

Would you agree that opting to go "cheap" on the interior of the offensive line has caused and will continue to cause the cowboys issues all season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

It's not like the high-priced veterans they had were getting the job done

joe m (auburn,ca)

I read today that JJ isn't even considering a trade of Choice because of the injury to jones and having to rely on rookie RB's. Why not? Is he afraid we can't replace a 2.3 ypa and a history now of fumbling the football in crucial cituations?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

Choice is your 3rd down back and without Felix for 2-4 weeks, you have to have a proven guy to team with DeMarco Murray

Teddy (Austin)

Is Holland really going to be lined up for 2 games in the series? It seems like Harrison has earned the no 3 starter spot.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

Holland will pitch Game 3 because the Rangers like him at home and Colby Lewis on the road because he has stunk at the ballpark this season

Benji (ATL)

In your opinion. Which one of the offensive lineman the Cowboys are working out would help them most in the RUNNING game? Cowboys need HELP!!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

none. Any dude still on the street right now is just a guy

Jeff (Clearwater)

If there is a shortened season, do you favor the Mavs to win it all or who would your pick be?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

I can't say I've even thought about hoops since the owners have locked out the players. That said, why not pick the Mavs. They're deep, proven, confident and they have a superstar

Steve (Syracuse)

Hello JJT, I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED your work with The Dallas Morning News! It's been awhile since I've enjoyed watching Dallas' D perform the way they did Sunday. And they will only get better!Any thoughts as to why Manuwai wouldn't get a call? A monster in the run game...........something that Dallas is lacking!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

Thanks. Again, any dude on the street right now is just a guy - otherwise he'd already be employed. Dallas' defense has ben impressive. I chose not to judge them until after the NE game because I wanted to see how they fared against Stafford and Brady. They passed the test, though they flunked the end of the game exam against Pats

Rod (Tx)

since you're convinced Dallas isn't in, give us your 6 playoff teams so we'll know how wrong you are

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

It always makes me laugh that you're all upset cause I said 2-3 team won't make the playoffs. 10 wins gets you in for sure. Any evidence the Cowboys are going 8-3 in the last 11 games? That's what I thought.Just for you:Division winners:SFGBNYGNOWildcard teams (pick 2)TampaAtlantaDetroitChicagoPhillyHappy?

I like how you answer only the "easy" have to be on Jerry's payroll

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

if you asked a question, maybe I'd answer it. You made a statement

Chris (San Diego)

Murray or Choice how will they split carries going forward?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

I'd think Murray would get the edge 60-40

Wild Bill (Irving)

JJ, rookie qb's don't need 2 seasons to get ready. Look at Cam Newton and Andy Dalton this year, and the success over the last few years of Roethliseberger, Ryan, Flacco, and Sanchez as rookies. A rookie could start from day 1 and do better then romo, or at least have an excuse for doing as bad being a rookie.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

intelligent men can disagree. Unless you're a star, you're better of sitting for a year or two. Sometimes, you don't have a choice.

Felix Jones (Dallas)

Hey JJT - help me regain the form I displayed in college.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

Dude, you can't stay healthy. It ain't your fault, but it is what it is

Jaelen Rollins (Simi Valley)

Don't you think Minnesota should give Christian Ponder a chance at quarterback and see how it goes from there?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

Yes sir. Colleyville's finest deserves a shot since they Vikings aren't going to the playoffs.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

When they went with essentially there rookie OL, i called it a rebuilding year.

John (Mass)

You mentioned them not playing at home which reminds me, why is it so quiet at Cowboys Stadium? Are fans there just not as loud as other Stadiums or is it the stadium design that doesn't project the noise? You would think when 100,000 people are there noise should be an issue, but it never seems to be.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

Yes sir. Colleyville's finest deserves a shot since they Vikings aren't going to the playoffs.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:41 PM)

Sorry had to cut it short. Out to the park to talk to some World Series participants. See you next week.
