Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone. Had a few technical difficulties accessing our software. Hope it's running smoothly for you. Let's get to it.

Kysan (Virginia)

Javid Best has had 2 concussions this year. How concerned is Detroit about this. A third could end his season right?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

For all we know, this concussion could end his season. I'm not saying it will, but these things are impossible to predict and Best has had at least three of them in the past two calendar seasons, dating back to college. It's a huge concern for the Lions, but most importantly for Best. Concussion are no joke, as we've all learned in recent years.

Josh (Atlanta)

Any chance the Vikes could do a reverse of the Herschel trade? Not saying I would ever really want to get rid of Peterson, but I mean the results speak for themselves.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

I doubt there is a team that would be willing to play the Vikings in that scenario. No matter what you think of Peterson, you can't give up that many draft picks for anyone, let alone someone who doesn't play quarterback.

Scooter, minny [via mobile]

Why don't the vikings use percy harvin more?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

Maybe it was the rib injury this time, I don't know. I don't get it.

Nathan (DC)

Any idea what's going on with the Bears and Chris Harris? This all can't be about one blown play, can it?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Lovie has no patience with safeties and never has. He rotates 3-4 guys in there every year, it seems. They decided to try someone else at starter, and Harris isn't really a factor on special teams, so he was deactivated. Obviously, Lovie didn't feel any personal loyalty toward him to protect him from that indignity.

Mo (Chicago)

KS, what do you make of Cutler yelling at Martz? Is there fire where that smoke is coming from? Was he definitely yelling at Martz? As a Bears fan, I loved seeing some kind of passion from Jay.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

I don't think we can say for sure it was Martz. But I would say that's not the first time that Cutler has directed a profanity to the sideline. It happens for every team in every game. This was just happened to be recorded.

Mike (Dallas)

A win this upcoming week against Tampa would put the Bears at 4-3, the same record they had last year at this point in the season. What is your feeling on their chances of replicating last years record (11-5) IF (big if, I realize) they take care of business against the Bucs?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

Well, the most encouraging parallel would be that they looked Sunday night like they had a good idea of how to operate on offense. If they can continue that approach, they have a chance to win more than they lose. Will they go 9-2 the rest of the way? I'm not sure about that.

Vapackerbacker (Virginia)

Would you agree that in the past 2 games the Packers have played to the level of their opponent? The effort against the Rams might not have beaten the Falcons.

Shawn (DC)

I think Harbuagh was definately the instigator with his boorish, condescending and arrogant post game performance, but Schwartz should have restrained himself -- instead he came off as a child chasing down Harbaugh to challenge him to a fight by the bike racks.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

Sorry, here's the answer to the Packers question.I think they're in a tough spot. The Packers are now at a point where if they don't win 49-0, people will say they're playing down to their opponents or otherwise underachieving. Yeah, they could have played better against the Rams. Every team in the NFL could say that after every game. They won comfortably regardless.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

And now the answer to the Harbaugh-Schwartz question....

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

I don't think what Harbaugh did is normal post-game protocol. But it wasn't enough to merit the other coach chasing him down and creating a scene. Schwartz needed to walk away.

Lups (Somewhere on 4th Ave)

Gut Feeling: Ponder starts this week?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

That's the way I interpreted Frazier's comments Monday, even though he can be hard to read sometimes. The NFL Network is reporting it will happen. Waiting on confirmation.

Ryan (WI)

What's the latest you've heard on Mike Neal? Looking good for a comeback the week after the bye or will it be significantly later than that, if at all?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

Well, he hasn't started practicing yet. The Packers keep saying they think sometime after the bye, but he needs to get out and practice for a few weeks before we can know that.

Bryan (Chicago)

Are the Lions going to trade for a running back? Any ideas on who? Choice?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

I guess it's possible. But Maurice Morris might be the guy they end up going with if Best can't play.

Eric (MN)

Can we expect to see Kyle Rudolph getting more looks now that Ponder is the QB?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

If Ponder is the guy, I would think he'll look to Rudolph a lot. They seemed to have a good thing going in the preseason.

Lups (Somewhere on 4th Ave)

When does Frazier's seat start getting warm? He's getting at least a one year freebee correct?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Correct. Not worth discussing unless he's in the exact same spot next season.

Mike Tice (Chicago, IL)

Not bad by my guys huh? Can we keep it up?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Nice job. Helps to get some help, if you know what I mean.

J.B. (PA)

Is Frazier the right guy for Minnesota? I'm actually beginning to long for the Les Steckel Era.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Oh no you didn't....

Andy (Arlington, VA)

Hawk immediately apologized and expressed regret about a gesture he made with his finger. Schwartz was mostly unremorseful about a physical confrontation. The player is likely to get fined, the coach wona??t. Seems like Hawk handled this much better. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

He did handle it better, yes. And the NFL's discipline standards are exposed in the comparison. One difference: NFL players are union employees and collective agree to their discipline. NFL coaches aren't and don't.

Jon (Dc)

Any word on Bears injury status (Hester, Peppers, Bennett, Carimi, K. Davis...) for this Sunday?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

I think they're in a tough spot. The Packers are now at a point where if they don't win 49-0, people will say they're playing down to their opponents or otherwise underachieving. Yeah, they could have played better against the Rams. Every team in the NFL could say that after every game. They won comfortably regardless.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

Hester and Peppers shouldn't be an issue. Bennett has a chance. Not sure on Carimi or Davis.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Kevin, do you know if Antoine Winfield will be ready to play on Sunday against the Packers?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

He's now missed two weeks of practice. So I think he'll need to be out there doing something on Wednesday for him to have a chance for Sunday's game.

Kevin (Chicago)

Now that Frank Zombo is back, do you see him taking an increasing number of snaps until finally supplanting Walden as the starter?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

A lot of people are asking that. I guess it's possible. I don't know if Walden is as bad as many of you think he is, but it's worth noting that Zombo was the original starter Dom Capers envisioned when training camp began.

Eric (Chicago)

Kevin, I bet you won't be going over to London with a chance to see 2 NFC North teams this week. I know you won't reveal it until Friday, but next time you're in Chicago, I'll bet you a Starbucks you're staying in MIN and not going to DET for a 3rd straight time.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

Just a Starbucks?

Josef (Tosa, WI)

Has Schwartz lost focus by allowing rappers/rockers into the locker room after wins and allowing his EGO to overshadow his players?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

Whoa. No, I wouldn't go there. I think it's been important to establish some legitimacy and credibility and make people and players be proud and excited to work for the Lions. I don't have a problem with any of the celebrity stuff.

Mike McCarthy (WI)

Well, it took six weeks, but finally have sole possession of first place in the NFC North. Who'd have thunk it?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

Pretty much all of us, right?

Mike (Reno, NV)

Can you please help me out here?!?!? I can't for the life of me figure out why the Lions went for 2 after the Burleson TD. I realize it all ended up being moot, but I am trying to wrap my mind around the strategy.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

It's a fair question. I'm not sure myself. Anyone?

Mitch (NC)

It's being reported that the refs gave the Niners 5 extra yards at the beginning of their game-winning drive against the Lions. Does the League do ANYTHING at all to correct mistakes like this?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

That's accurate. I'm going to do a post on that after the chat. There is nothing the NFL can do other than acknowledge a mistake, which it doesn't always do.

Jerry Angelo (Front Office)

Do you really think I am that dumb to trade Forte?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

It was never reported that you would, and no, I don't think you are.

Mo (Chicago)

Why does it take a "genius" like Mike Martz so many games (every season) to assess what his offense is capable of? Or is it a case of it taking this long for Lovie to discipline him?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

I wonder if it was actually Cutler finally getting through to him.

devin bachman (howell michigan )

it is shocking you that staford is putting up mvp number i am waay happy he is still healthy after 6 weeks of nfl football

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

Not at all. He looked great in training camp and in the preseason and has been in the same system now for three years. It was his time to bloom.

Steve (Chicago)

Kevin, I've been having this feeling lately, especially looking at the NFC standings--- what are the chances that both NFC wild cards come out of the NFC North?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

It'll depend on the Lions maintaining their strong play and the Bears keeping things simple on offense. Neither out of the question.

Ed (Beltsville,Md)

Please tell me why the Bucs are already in London and the Bears dont plan to leave untill Thursday? Couldnt that become a issue for Chicago?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:27 PM)

I can see it both ways. The Bears will get in the bulk of their practice work Wednesday and Thursday in their normal environment. The Bucs will not. But the Bears won't have as long to adjust to the time difference. On my one and only trip to London, I took the overnight flight from the U.S. east coast, got in during the early morning and was a zombie the first day. By the third day, though, I was fine.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

So you make the assumption that Morris would get most of the carries with Best out? Or is it moot, since short passes to Pettigrew is their run game?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

Morris might actually have a better chance at grinding out yards than Best. He just won't break the proverbial 88-yarder.

Russ (Ohio)

Is the QB change for Vikes Frazier's call, or do he and Spielman have to huddle on all decisions...how does it all work at Winter Park

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

They share roster decisions, but if Frazier doesn't get to choose his starting quarterback, I would be shocked.

Rick Spielman (Winter Park, MN)

Kevin, do you think my seat will be heating up soon if my team continues to lose?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

Your career is in the hands of Christian Ponder. Biggest decision you've made since you've been there.

Jake (Wausau, Wi)

I feel the Packers really didn't try in the second half because they didn't want to runup to score on the Rams. Everyone knows the Rams are doing very poorly, and this isn't the BCS they don't need style points. Or do you think they just played very poorly?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

Just felt like they were trying to get to the end of the game. Not an ideal thing, but I don't think they were "stymied."

Kev (Green Bay)

There is a ridiculous level of hype around Green Bay right now. Undefeated season talk, big disappointment if they don't win the SB, etc. Can we chill?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

Sorry, namesake. That's the price for being a Super Bowl champion.

Dom Capers (The Toupe Shop)

Christian Ponder will be making his first start for the Vikings this week. Any reason for my Packers D to be worried about him as he has yet to play and I don't have much tape on him?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

He's a little more unpredictable, a bit more mobile and hopefully, for the Vikings' sake, much more competitive than McNabb. So there you go....

AJ Hawk (Lambeau Field)

Just to clear things up -- I wasn't giving the middle finger to my teammates, I was giving the middle finger to you. You need to start showing the Packers D a little more respect Kevin.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

I'll keep that in mind.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

By the way, Chris Mortensen has now confirmed the NFL Network report that Ponder is starting Sunday.

Lups (Somewhere on 4th Ave)

Do you think Musgrave is safe for this year too? Some of his play calls and game plans have been mind boggling.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

Well, he's close with Frazier. But I agree that it's been an awfully underwhelming start for him.

Gary (MD)

Would Forte make the Lions a serious super bowl contender?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

Trading for Darrelle Revis would help, too. Neither is going to happen.

Jeff (Nashville)

What is the deal with the Packers' run game? Bad blocking? Rodgers isn't getting sacked a ton, but he escapes a few every game. Bad play by Grant and Starks?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

It's a fair question. I don't think there is a simple answer. They're just not equipped to be an explosive running game. It complements their strength in the passing game, and that's about it.

Alex Cavallin (Two Harbors)

Kevin, now the Vikings are rolling with Ponder, do you think they play more young talet, like maybe giving Ballard a chacne to start next to Kevin Williams?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

It won't be in relation to the Ponder move. It just shows they're going to keep looking for combinations that can make them better.

Sara (Chicago)

Looking at the positives, despite their poor play and another halftime deficit, the Lions still had a chance to win that game against a formidable 49er team.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

Agreed. I didn't look at that as a bad loss at all. They were leading one of the NFL's top teams late in the fourth quarter and lost on a touchdown that was inches away from falling short.

Luke (Stevens Point)

Kevin you have to talk to the Mods on the blogs, I got my account banned because I was sticking up for you and your articles this last when someone from the NFCW was talking crazy.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

They are a third-party group. Not going to listen to me.

Jim (Chicago)

To what degree are the Vikings current problems attributable to the Childress era? In other words, is Frazier taking more heat than he deserves with this roster and cap situation?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

The only thing that has carried over is the serial mismanagement of the quarterback situation. That left Frazier needing to rebuild the position in the first year. He literally inherited nothing there.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Regarding Kev in Green Bay's comments, I think their chance for an undefeated season hinges on whether or not they win on Thanksgiving Day against the Lions. I think that will be their toughest matchup. Do you agree?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

At San Diego is going to be a challenge....

Adam (Winnipeg)

I hear Jason Lacanfora suggests the Lions trade for Peyton Hillis, any substance there?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

Lots of reports out there. Would make sense, but there are some reports saying the Browns won't listen to offers.

Marshall Newhouse (Green Bay)

Kevin,What do you think is the chances I stay as the starting tackle when Chad Clifton comes back from injury?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

Fair, mostly because it's going to be a long time before Clifton is ready to play.

Chip (Toledo (Ohio))

Put yourself in Jim Schwartz' shoes for a minute: You just lost a tough game @ home, you start to walk across the field and you see the opposing coach jumping around, untucking his shirt in mid-air, and then the "handshake" ensues. You wouldn't be livid? There have been 90 games played this season, and if you watch the other 89 handshakes - there is no doubt that protocol exists. I agree Schwartz shouldn't have chased him down, but I think your opinion has been a little too harsh on our guy. Thanks.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

Some fair points. But my opinion isn't based on him being livid. Nothing wrong with that. It's for what he did afterwards. It was just a bad choice. But I'm willing to move on....

Christian (High Point, NC)

On the one hand, why would you throw Ponder to the undefeated defending Super Bowl Champions in his first game? On the other, the Packers defense has been giving up a ton of yards to opposing QBs. Is Frazier thinking that even with a loss Ponder will gain confidence?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

I think the overriding factor is that he couldn't continue to leave the offense unaddressed when he had another option. At least it's a home game...

Dave (Columbus)

Going for two puts the Lions up 6. In al honesty as a 49er fan, I would have expected SF to get 2 FGS before they could score a touchdown. Not the most explosive offense in the league. Seems like the right call to me.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

Fair point Dave.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

Ok, I'm going to take a few more here and then I'll need to end this early to go blog the Ponder story.

Josh (Atlanta)

What is the status on Sullivan and Loadholt this week. Pinder didn't look bad in the pocket with those guys out, but it would shure make it easier for him if they were in.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

Sounds like Loadholt is OK. Sullivan has a concussion, which is obviously a concern.

Kevin ((Tampa))

Did you ever Imagine McNabb would be worse than Tarvaris Jackson ?!?!?!?!?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

I don't think he is.

Zachary (Sheboygan, WI)

The Packers Secondary has been shaky at times, is it a matter of time before they get burned or do you think they have it figured out?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Well, they've now made it six weeks without it costing them a game. It might be the reason they don't finish 16-0, but I don't see it ruining their season.

Mike (Dallas)

I love Donald Driver, but at what point do McCarthy and Philben start working Randall Cobb in more. To give the offense more speed.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

That could be a reasonable possibility in the second half of the season. They have the luxury of not putting too much on him too soon.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

OK everyone. Off to blog. Thanks for stopping by!
