Hello there Sports Nation chat friends...welcome to Tuesday chats. Looking back at the Week 6 injuries and seeing what changes we need to make to our rosters for the upcoming matchups...
Stephania, will I be able to start Sam Bradford this week? Please tell me I won't be turning to Painter or Beck.
Garrett: Why not go get Carson Palmer? Hurry! I don't think Bradford will be out there this week given the high ankle sprain. Might not keep him out as long as a running back or receiver, but he needs to be able to protect himself.
Hi Stephania, how are you and how did your team do in the War Room league? I am wondering what is the earliest you think Felix could be back and what do you make of Demarco Murray for the next few weeks as a bye week fill in?
Jonathan: Thanks for asking...but we suffered our first loss. Guess it had to happen at some point. Peyton Hillis going down with the hamstring hurt us. I think the soonest Felix "could" be back is two weeks. But I think he'll be out a month or longer. Murray seems like he will get you more points than Choice if you need a fill-in.
To Best or not to Best, that is the question
Randy: You know how these concussion things go. Daily evaluation, there are clear targets for returning to play, not something you can fudge. And given the earlier concussion this year, may even slow his return. Hard to say. Instinct suggests he's out this week.
Getting this in before I forget. Ms. Bell, should Peyton Hillis owners like me start looking for alternatives for this week? Much obliged.
J.B: Yes, definitely look for an alternative. This could come down to a gametime decision. Hillis feeling heat and I'm sure wants to try to come back but if he isn't back practicing by THursday, the doubt he plays. Hamstrings always prone to setbacks - just look around the league for plenty of examples - better to plan ahead, even if the team not indicating just how serious the strain is.
Lovely Stephania, can you please give me some news on Best? Should I be looking into Morris for the time being? Thanks
Adam: Just as a follow to the prior Best question, yes, Morris looks to be the guy.
Hi Stephania, we're getting conflicted reports on LeGarratte Blount's injury. Is it an MCL tear or merely a strain? If so what is his timetable to return based on the damage to the knee.
Bram: The single report I've seen on the injury was Grade 2 MCL. (the team has not confirmed). Grade 2 is partial tear, so calling it a tear is not incorrect. And then there's a range within Grade 2 as far as extent of damage, which means there's a range of recovery time. 2-6 weeks - so we can only gauge it by his activity level as he progresses.
Any news on Gates or Addai this week? Also any life left in Knowshon?
Mike: Gates practiced Monday. Wants to play this week but can't commit. Needs to see how the foot feels when he tries to run Sunday. No word yet on Addai's status for the week, wait to see if he can get back to practice Weds. And Moreno is not worth a roster spot.
Thanks Stephania for your updates Sundays and congrats to your 49ers. Two must questions I need addressed. Is Best likely to start and is Andre Johnson going to return this week. Waiver wire tonight and byes brutal. Thanks
Don: Thanks for the nice comments. Much appreciated - very happy to see my Niners turning it around. We covered Best. Johnson could return next week. The hope is he is able to get in some practice time this week. The hamstring is still a little weak, but he is making good progress - could make last game in October.
Any update on Ryan Mathews?
Zeke: Back in practice this week, very good sign. If that continues all week, expect him to start. Tolbert back in practice also. Assuming no return of his concussion symptoms, expect he returns too.
Hi Stephania - how did Miles Austin and Daniel Thomas come through with their hamstring injuries? Both guys are in my lineup and I hope I can keep them there!
Doug: So far, so good. Thomas didn't look spectacular, but then not many of the Dolphins did. Perhpas most importantly there's been no word of any setback, he seemed to come through the game just fine so unless something crops up later, expect him to be out there.
You tweeted in response to my friend the other day and he was bragging about it for days. I'm hoping to get some bragging rights. How's Julio Jones? I know hammys are tough, but what's your take?
Sean: It's only fair...so here you fo. WIsh I could give you more on Julio but what we do know is that he tested the leg running Monday. Now we need to see if he can get into practice. Positive steps, but not enough to tell us he'll definitely be out there this weekend.
What's the status on Brandon Jacobs? Is he droppable, or will he be back after the bye?
RYan: He says he'll be back. The swelling is reportedly much improved and he hopes to be back out there. The week of rest coming now only helps.
I know you say Best will likely sit, but why morris over Jerome Harrison?
Because that's what Schwartz is not only saying, it's how their distributing the ball behind Best already.
In all the fantasy leagues im in, im still finding Matt Hasselbeck on the wavier wires, is it a good pick up or is their a reason that everyone is staying away from him that im not seeing?
Zachary: Maybe they're staying away b/c of receiver situation since Britt went down, but I can tell you since I have him in a league, that he's been consistently productive from a fantasy standpoint, more than expected.
Stephania. I am not hearing anything on Beanie Wells this week, Is he 100% after their bye week. I need a big week from him against the steelers
Steve: He was off the injury report heading in - so as of now, healthy.
Would you deal V.Cruz and Beanie Wells for CJ2K?
Jeff: Yes, think Johnson picks it up now. He had no preseason work and started slow. Think the second half gets it going for him. D=
What's the good word on the many injured Chargers?
Matt: Think I left out VJax on the last Charger post. He did not practice Monday (hamstring) but the expectation is that he will be back Weds.
Would you call this week the "LAST CHANCE" for A.Gates?
Nate: For fantasy? Or for his team? Chargers have already basically said they plan to allow him whatever time he needs and use him however they're able this season. For fantasy, unless you have an otherwise healthy roster and plenty of room on your bench, I'd be using the roster spot for someone else.
PLEASE tell me Andre Johnson's hammy isn't going to take "6 weeks at most" to heal. I don't want to have to start Greg Little!
Brian: I saw his comments too. And I think the words "at most" are key. He's saying they told him that would be the outside marker...and he's coming along faster than that. So it looks like 4 weeks will still be the reasonable timetable to return, which would be the last week of October. Not a lock obviously, but his activity puts him on track for that timetable.
Hey Stephania, any news on the DEN wr corps? Are Royal and Thomas likely to be active this week, and if so, do you think Decker is the top guy there for the moment?
David: It looks like the Broncos expect to have both Thomas and Royal. Thomas is a big question mark coming off the Achilles rupture. THere's legit concern about losing power/explosiveness after that injury and the only way to find out, is to see how he actually looks in a game situation. Decker is still ahead of both of them at the moment.
Hey Stephania, I know EVERYONE is driving you nuts about this!!!! BUT, just tell me what you can about Hightower/Torain(as far as injury update on Hightower and who might play more or a lot on Sunday vs. Carolina???!!! I have BOTH on my fantasy team!!
Dave: It's Shanahan's world...Redskins RB owners are just living in it. You will never know, perhaps not even until the game is being played, how the backs are going to be used. TOrain said it last week - even they don't know. Now that Hightower has had the shoulder issue, Torain got his opportunity. Then didn't do anything with it. Have to believe Hightower gets the chance back next week. That would be my inclination. But we're all guessing.
Did Mike Wallace pull a hammy on Sunday ??
Tony: They're calling it a very mild strain. But suggesting he could miss some practice. Never like to see the words hamstring and receiver in the same sentence, but the way they're talking about it doesn't sound like he misses time.
How is Earnest Graham? Will all those carries and jet lag affect his play in London against Chicago?
Perry: Teams have not played particulary well in London in the past, but at least they're not going through as much of a time difference as a west coast team going to London. Think Graham will be fine and they will likely lean on him again.
No one is asking about Reggie Bush? Was doing pretty well until he hurt is neck. What is the update on his injury?
John: I think b/c he came back into the game there wasn't as much concern. He actually got a decent number of carries, presumably b/c Thomas was coming off the injury but will be interesting to see if the ratio continues that way.
Hi Stephania, I have a trade I'm pondering, would you rather go with Romo or Stafford the rest of the season (due to Romo's injuries) and offer the other up for Michael Turner?
Michael: Stafford. With the exception of last week he has been amazing (and even last week he wasn't fantasy awful). I'd be willing to give up Romo for Turner if I needed RB help...and hope Turner is getting hotter.
Hey Steffy! As a 49ers fan how do you feel about Handshake-gate? Also what are the odds Troy P plays? The Steelers D isnt the same without him and I need big games from Fitz and Beanie.
Joe: Just wish we were talking more about the Niners and less about the handshake...as far as Troy P, Pittsburgh already sounding as if they expect they have him back this week.
Any cause for concern in regards to Hester?
Jeremy: Definitely some. No specifics from the team other than "chest" injury so hard to get a grasp of exactly what it is. But anything involving ribs/sternum can be a problem. So naturally we need to see if he can get back to practice this week.
I haven't heard much on the Sidney Rice shoulder woes. Is he still good to go?
Travis: He's been able to play pretty well despite the torn labrum. I think as long as he's functioning at this level, it won't really come up week-to-week. The risk is there though that he has one big hit or one awkward landing that causes it to flare up and we're talking about it again.
Steph, what can you tell us regarding Cadillac Williams? Will he be OUT this week so I can IR him and pick someone else up? He's a handcuff...what can I say?!?!?!?
Chris: No lock to be out this week. Thigh contusion (or deep bruise) and an MRI showed no further damage. He's considered day-to-day right now. You won't be able to IR him.
Is Fred Davis a must start now with Cooley out?
CT: He's certainly better than many of your other TE options. And Cooley may well be done for the year. Davis was already the more productive of the two, now there's no competition for catching the ball at that position.
is it possible to come back and play in 6 weeks from a broken collarbone like Jason Campbell thinks?
Fred: Not IMpossible, but highly unlikely. Really don't see it happening. And if Palmer comes in and does well, then there's really no reason to press the issue. He becomes the insurance perhaps for way late in the season, or more likely for the playoffs.
With Bradfords injury is LLoyd still a good pickup - over S. Holmes?
Will: I like Lloyd over Holmes. Don't think Bradford's injury is long-term, maybe a couple weeks. And I think he'll quickly become a Bradford target.
Thoughts on Mark Clayton returning? He should have had plenty of time to recover given in-season, off-season, and PUP list, correct?
Jon: From a healing perspective, yes. But the worry has to do with the power, the burst. Will it be there following a patellar tendon rupture? Not many at his position come back from that. Guess we'll find out when we see him on the field.
Thanks for coming to the chat! Time for me to leave. Come back Friday afternoon and we'll update all the injuries heading into Week 7.
