Hi gang! Jon is running a tad late. He'll be here shortly.
By the way, I could take any of you in a cage match. Just so you know.
We've had some tech issues today with the auto-updating. We're working on it.
Hrd to typ with all these muscles getting in the way. I need to lay off the gym.
Jon will be here any minute.. seriously.
Is the buzzmaster really talking smack???
Not just talking it. Throwing it down!
What's a Buzzmaster anyway?
Your offical chat host here in SportsNation. I keep the trains running.
Hey Buzzlight Year (I mean master) there's a chant going right now.... We Want Jon... We Want Jon... #JustSayin :)
I'll join the chant ...
I'm here, folks. Sorry for the delay. Just got done with some poker hits for ESPN2's coverage of the WSOP. Here until 2:40 ET. Fire away...
Are you a little skeptical of GSP injury? Thinking maybe he didn't have enough time to prepare for Condit?
I'm always reluctant to question a fighter and the legitimacy of an injury. GSP doesn't fight as often as many of us would like and I am confident he badly wanted to compete on Oct. 29th. Disappointing.
Will this chat be a full hour or just a few minutes?
Full hour, bud.
Jon Anik, you ABSOLUTELY SUCK. How dare you keep your faithful followers waiting like this!!
Bad guy I am. Hate having to move the chat window.
GSP pulled out cuz he realized that it was going to be his 3rd fight this year.
Tough year for the UFC the buyrates have been down and this was garanteed to make the GSP minimum.
Certainly a blow to the PPV. GSP is among the top 2 draws for the UFC. B.J. Penn is a proven draw as well, but you have to think UFC 137 will take somewhat of a hit.
Do you chat at your desk or is there a dedicated chat room at ESPN?
At my desk. Sometimes I even chat from home.
who does the winner of dos santos and cain fight next??
I'd imagine the Velasquez-Dos Santos winner will face the Brock Lesnar-Alistair Overeem winner.
late as hell
Gotta take care of the TV responsibilities first. Sorry.
should diaz vs penn be moved to 5 rounds?
It would be nice for the fans, but I don't believe so. The fighters were training for a 3-round fight and, as my colleague Josh Gross aptly tweeted, these are not video-game characters. I appreciate that the Diaz camp wants a 5-rounder, but I'm not sure the fighters should call the shots. And I like Penn by TKO in the first 15 minutes, anyway.
How does anyone think Mitrione is going to beat Kongo...he'll get KOed in rnd 1....and yes, I'm on the record.
I was told this morning that Mitrione is the betting favorite. He's certainly at an experience disadvantage. But what I like about Mitrione is that his skills and his physique have improved dramatically with every passing fight. He is going in the right direction. It's a pick 'em fight to me.
I'm getting married on 10/30. Should I skip the rehearsal dinner to watch BJ RNC Nick Diaz?
I'd probably hit that rehearsal dinner.
no way Penn gets inside of Diaz reach. Diaz by RNC.
Whats up JA? What's the hold up on Sonnen/Silva being announced. It's pretty much a given, right?
The hold-up is with Anderson Silva, I believe. Wants to make sure he is 100% healthy before he begins the training camp. Even if the fight doesn't happen on Super Bowl weekend, it will be the next middleweight title fight. I'd be stunned if it wasn't.
more likely to happen David Ortiz in pinstripes or Cubs uniform
use to come on all the time, anyways mayhem has to be one of the best tuf coaches ever always picking the right matchups?
He's off to a great start and is clearly pushing the right buttons.
I'll take Meathead first round.
what is next for Brenden Schaub? Could he cut to 205?
No, he can't cut to 205 lbs. As for a next opponent, I would say Travis Browne, but he's coming off a win. Perhaps he would face the Mitrione-Kongo loser.
Does Cro Cop go out with a win?
I picked Roy Nelson.
Best chat and never miss it! I get the feeling Dana would rather have Faber with belt then Cruz. Faber with belt brings my interest or fans to UFC?
Urijah Faber is certainly the bigger name and bigger draw, but I don't think Dana White actively roots for that scenario. Dominick Cruz is one of the better P4P fighters in the world and his skills are a great representation for MMA and the UFC. I get the feeling Brian Bowles might end up as bantamweight champion...
Any more news/rumors on the possible chael/vitor match
I think the UFC would much prefer to put together the rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen.
Any word on how to see the undercard for the UFC on Fox card?
No. I think I'm just as curious as you guys as to how it will all play out.
Miller, Maynard, Guillard, Guida/Hendo loser. UFC going to make 2 matches out of those 4 or do they want to ease all 4 back into the winners bracket?
I don't think there will be any easing back into the win column. Jim Miller vs. Gray Maynard makes a lot of sense. And I think the fighters you mention are all elite and worthy of facing one another at present.
jon how long do you think before eddie alvarez ditches fighting mail men and goes to the ufc
Eddie Alvarez is paid handsomely and has a championship clause in his contract. I don't think he'll transition to the UFC anytime soon. He wants badly to test himself against the best in the world, but that doesn't mean he's not content with his current situation.
Any chance you and KenFlo are skyping next weekend so that those of us missing the GSP fight can still see two dudes in speedos rolling around on each other?
Hey Chost, longt time first time. Love the chats & Live. After El Nino beats Masvidal I see him taking the belt from Edgar. You think Edgar moves to 145 and takes over there?War Texas!
I don't think Frankie Edgar is any great rush to move to 145 lbs. Many believe he is now the greatest lightweight in MMA history. He fights at his natural weight and that has worked out beautifully for him. I do share your enthusiasm for a fight between Melendez and Edgar, but don't sleep on Masvidal.
Anyone else think Gamebred has a legit shot?
I'd give him a 33% chance to win. Masvidal has never been in a better place mentally or physically. But Melendez is such a hungry, well-rounded fighter. It'll take the best performance of Masvidal's career to upend the champion.
When will Chael be back in Bristol? He is the best analyst ever!!!!!
Why would Eddie Alvarez and Hector Lombard choose to lose millions, just to get beat up in the UFC?
Not sure that either is making millions. And the simple answer would be to prove they are the best in the world, or among the best in the world. Lombard's unbeaten streak is 24 fights and he can barely crack the top 10 in most middleweight rankings. He wants better than that.
Do you think we'll see Rich Franklin at middleweight again?
Chances King Mo v. Rampage in Japan? I would love that fight. Have wanted to see it for some time now.
I think King Mo wants that fight more than you do and it would be huge in Japan. As long as Rampage is down, I think it's highly possible.
Now that GSP is out, UFC or Bellator with Askren headlining live in my city? Choice just got tougher.. Suggestion?
I would always favor going to a live MMA show and Askren is one of my favorites. How about you order UFC 137, turn your phone off, and watch it when you get home?
I Can't Stand Michael Bisping but I think he crushes Jason Miller ?
I think the fight is closer than you do. Miller is underrated b/c he garners headlines for being a dynamic personality. He's a pretty dynamic fighter, too. I like Bisping, but don't believe crush is the right verb.
Jon - Would you like to see a GSP/Lombard match? How would it go?
Sure. But Lombard is thick as hell, even though he's not much more than 5'9". Cutting down to 170 wouldn't be much fun, I reckon.
im a huge Brock fan just dont know how hes gonna get past Reem
...especially if he isn't 100% healthy.
Askren is the most boring fighter in MMA history. Choose ANY UFC card over ANY Askren fight
Obviously, I appreciate his style more than most. His ability to dictate pace and the direction a fight goes is awesome. His takedowns are as relentless as any fighter on the UFC roster.
If Penn gets passed Diaz and GSP beats Condit, do you think we will really see GSP vs Penn III? I'm praying for not...
I don't believe so. There are plenty of huge fights for Penn at 170 lbs., even if they aren't for the title. I'd love to see Penn against Josh Koscheck or Jake Shields or Anthony Johnson or Jake Ellenberger or even Thiago Alves. I don't believe GSP-Penn III is a priority at all.
Why didn't they bump up Cerrone/Siver to the PPV? That thing has FOTN written all over it
Perhaps the change could still be made. Not sure.
Do you think Jake Shields will move to Middle Weight now?
Strong possibility. Your guess is as good as mine.
Over/Under 250K PPV buys for 137?
Definitely over, John. I still think it'll eclipse 400,000.
Chost, if Nick Diaz beats BJ Penn will he finally get a title shot against the GSP/Condit winner?
I believe so, Ryan. Good to hear ya from Gettysburg, PA! I graduated from Gettysburg College in 2001.
I buy every UFC PPV, and I REFUSE to pay for GSP vs Penn III
They already made the bump in the 137 PPV, Spike gets the Cerrone/Siver fight (great lead in)
do you think Jones would look past Machida because of how bad he wants to fight Evans?
Most definitely not. Jon Jones is not the look-past-an-opponent type. At all. He may be young, but he knows it'll take a good camp and performance on fight night to get past Lyoto Machida.
JA, you sad to see Theo head to the Windy City?
Not really, Jason. Appreciate his baseball mind and his accomplishments. But as a sports fan, I always think change is exciting. I'm glad Adrian Gonzalez is signed long-term. Red Sox will be just fine.
Mitrione will fight for the title in 2012?
I don't believe so. But were he to work his way into a title fight at some point, it wouldn't surprise me.
I gotta imagine if Bendo/Guida is a title eliminator, it'll make its way onto TV somehow
To go off other Brad's question, do you think Jones is fighting too often at this point?
In an ideal world, he would have taken the rest of 2011 off...and he certainly earned that right. But Jones is also working towards a new contract and he really stepped up here for his employer. The UFC badly needed a big main event for its return to Toronto. And in my opinion, Jones deserves credit for stepping up.
Which champ loses their title 1st? Silva, Jones, Cain or GSP?
I am leaning towards Chael Sonnen in the rematch with Anderson Silva. But I believe Sonnen is the only middleweight on the roster who can beat Anderson.
Jon - this what you do with your Degree?
Do you think MMA fighters over train ?
I'm sure some push the envelope and I'm quite certain it's a fine line.
Is Aldo/Mendes a main event PPV or is going to have to co-main event a brock/gsp/Silva fight?
I think a co-main event slot is more likely. I think the UFC is still developing its 135 and 145 lbs. divisions.
Last chance to give a shout out to my new baby girl Jon! I'm running on zero sleep but still have to head out to work... keep up the great chats!
Congrats, Keith! Have fun with those first three months. :)
Coming to San Diego for strikeforce card in December???
Hope so, Alexis.
Can you give a little preview/breakdown of how you think the Penn vs Diaz fight plays out. I know you said Penn under 15...
My anticipation for this fight is through the roof. I just saw some holes in Nick Diaz's boxing defense that were taken advantage of by Paul Daley. B.J. Penn's finishing instincts are better than Daley's and Diaz had better not get sloppy. Diaz is a tough guy to prepare for and a tough guy to time. But I believe Penn will get it done.
Is MMA live going to be on ESPN2 this week?
Yes. Unfortunately, we don't air until 2:30AM ET on Friday night. Perhaps you can watch it on the DVR over your Saturday AM coffee.
Hey Chost, if you could choose a dream matchup between the UFC and another promotion, what would it be? Mine would be Barnett and Mir. The trash talking would be epic and both of them are submission machines.
Love the possibility of a Mir-Barnett fight. But for me, the fight would be Eddie Alvarez v. Frankie Edgar. I know they are friends, but I think they would fight if it were for a title.
How many fights til Overeem gets a title shot?
Could be only one.
Who else is joining you in Bristol besides Mr. Sonnen?
We're starting the media call without Nick Diaz. Lots of questions directed to BJ so far... I'm sure Nick is just planning to be fashionably late.
Diaz being Diaz, I guess. Good to have you back in the chat.
Is MMA Live actually aired live?
We usually tape it on Friday mornings and then pray that no major news breaks in the interim.
Ever thought of doing an mma podcast?
Absolutely. I pitched the 'Anik Dotes' MMA podcast to ESPN.com two years ago. Never materialized...
With Chael's elevated testoterone and Silva's busted rib in the first fight, are you expecting the same type of fight in the second? I'm not.
I do believe the rib was probably a factor, but I still think Chael will be able to take Silva down and do damage. The biggest factor in the first fight, for me, was Silva's ability to take that beating and not get cut open at all. He's Teflon. Not sure his face will hold up to that type of bludgeoning again.
Who you got in the Penn vs Diaz fight?
Did you hear what Cesar Gracie said to BJ Penn? "Don't be scared, Homie. Let's make it five rounds' Just thought that was pretty funny.
Some comedic value. But, if I were B.J. Penn, I wouldn't be in any great hurry to make it a five-rounder. I know Penn always does right by the fans, but Diaz has cardio for days. Don't see how a 5-rounder benefits B.J.
Are you still leaning toward Cain next month over Junior?
It's really a coin flip. But yes.
What's up with espn treating mma live like an adults only show? 2:30AM ET!
Aint no such things as halfway crooks
Scared to death and scared to look...
Do you agree with Condit waiting for GSP, or do you think he should try to fight again first?
It's a tough situation. If GSP will be healthy by January, I think the smart move for Condit is to wait. There is risk on both sides. There is risk that he could be out 6+ months by waiting for the title shot. And there is risk that he could lose to a guy like Koscheck or Ellenberger, should he decide to fight. Ultimately, I think it's smart to preserve his title shot.
Is your first love mma or another sport?
First love was basketball. But the list right now is: 1) UFC 2) NFL 3) boxing
Condit was removed from the card because GSP's injury isn't serious and they can reschedule in the near future. Otherwise they would've replaced him.
Correct. But there is still no exact timetable for St-Pierre's return. And there is always risk that he isn't ready in the near future.
Who would you like to see get the next shot at Frankie Edgar?
Ben Henderson, provided he beats Clay Guida on 11/12. And my expectation is that he will.
Jon, What happened to MMA news on rumor central?
I guess it has gone away for the time being. Not sure if it was a lack of subscriptions or what.
Anik, your thoughts on Dawson/Hopkins? I think Hopkins was injured going into the fight because he was wincing before he hit the canvas.
That is a distinct possibility. Certainly didn't appear to hit the canvas all that hard. What a mess these last few boxing PPVs have been. Waste of time and money.
Is the rumors section for MMA been terminated?
No idea, Paul.
Is there an exec who represents the interest of MMA at ESPN?
Yes. There are a lot of executives who are MMA proponents and others who don't love it.
Should the UFC discount PPVs from fighters pulling out? I would pay $35-$40 for this one... but not $55!
Good question, Tai. I'm sure the UFC has done a ton of research on the topic. I think it would be a nice gesture, but I'm not sure it's all that necessary.
What's bigger in the US - hockey or MMA?
I believe the worldwide fan bases are actually similar in size, as are the U.S. fan bases.
Some words of wisdom for you Chost,.. "Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things."
Does your boy Kenny have anything left to fight for?
Sure. I think pride. He doesn't necessarily have anything left to prove, but I'm sure he'd like to go out with a win. I'd be stunned if he competed again at featherweight. I think a return to 155 lbs. after a brief layoff is very likely. Looking forward to seeing him this week.
Who do you like in a Mayweather-Kahn fight?
Hey Jon, hope all is well with the family. I've been really impressed with Mayhem's eye for talent and ability to exploit matchups so far on TUF. Your thoughts? Also odds he's beat Bisping, i'm thinking at least 50/50? Take is easy buddy.
Hey Keith- totally agree on Mayhem. I also think he's pushing all the right buttons in the corner, in addition to the matchmaking stuff. And clearly his fighters are buying in. I do favor Bisping in the fight, albeit slightly. Miller certainly would be a live underdog, if the Vegas line was large.
I hope Cerrone stays on Spike, I really don't want to buy this PPV.
What's up CHost, Better boxing Diaz or Penn?
Two entirely different skill sets. Penn's style is predicated more on power, Diaz's on volume. I would probably lean towards Diaz, but it's close.
does Carson Palmer have any fantasy value?
I don't think so. You'd have to be pretty desparate at the QB position to go in that direction.
Melendez vs B. Hendo or Edgar would be something to see, like to see one of those happen soon.
Gotta run chost. No need to post, just wanna say I love ya bud. Best part of my week.
Thanks, Wilkie. Appreciate that. Good day.
On the opposite side how bad of a coach is Bisping? Screaming "Get the F*** up!" is not good coaching.
I don't believe he is as poor as parts of this season would indicate. He did a nice job in his first stint, I believe. Sometimes his emotions get the better of him.
Sadly the best part of my week lately, no offense.
Hahahahahaha. None taken.
Hi Jon, am a dedicated lover of your chats!! I'm of the thought that every UFC card is great as I'm a fan of MMA, not a fan of names!! Where do you fall in this regard brother?
It's an important point, Brian. Name recognition and value is the biggest key in PPV buys. But oftentimes the best PPV cards are the ones that don't blow you away with big names. And UFC 137 remains a strong main card, I believe.
BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz isn't worth $55?! Fight would headline any other PPV
I'm with ya.
It is last call. Hard out at 2:40, folks.
How do I get a question answered on MMA Live?
We don't take fan questions on the TV show any longer. Perhaps our Twitter segment will return at some point.
Sean Wheelock and Jimmy Smith are alright but I still miss you and Jason Chambers on the mic for Bellator shows.
I appreciate that and miss calling fights very much. Loved doing the Rutgers game a few weeks ago, but hopefully I haven't called my last fight. That's where it's at.
Hey Jon, what do you think about the main event change for UFC 137?
I love the Penn-Diaz scrap and I believe it holds up as a main event, but I'm obviously disappointed that we won't get GSP-Condit.
I know you're a fan of Florian but wouldn't Miller be great as an analyst?
Absolutely. There are several fighters who can hang as MMA Live analysts and deserve that opportunity. Brian Stann is terrific and deserves some more run, as does Pat Miletich.
Who ya picking in the Hendo vs Shogun fight?
Not sure yet. Likely Hendo, b/c he gives me a hard time when I don't.
What weight class is the Schwartz/Harbaugh fight in? Who has the tougher weight cut?
Light heavyweight. Tougher cut for Harbaugh. Harbaugh is -180, Schwartz +150.
Dana White taking the blame for Nick Diaz no show on the call today
Appreciate the heads-up. Oftentimes my chat goes head-to-head with the UFC conference calls.
Do (most) MMA fighters make more money from endorsements or fights?
Good question, Marc. I think a lot of the high-profile guys do quite well with both fight purses and endorsements. I think the middle-tier guys probably make more money from fights, but I could be off.
when sonnen is in town for mma live, do you guys go to dinner or have a beer? Or is he just there for the show and gets right back out of town? I guess that question applies to all guests...
There is always the opportunity for me to break bread with the fighters the night before the show. Most of the time, I don't do it because I'm either typing scripts for the next day or home with the family.
How many more promos does Diaz get to skip before Dana gets fed up?
JA, is Anderson has 4 more fights, assuming Chael is 1, who are the other 3? GO CARDS!!!
Congrats to your Cardinals. Such an impressive run. Don't love the roster, but I do believe they will win the Series in 6. As for Silva's next 4 opponents, it's hard to say. I think Sonnen is in that mix and maybe Bisping. Could also see him in a mega-fight with Jon Jones, but that is less likely.
I cannot get this fight off my mind and I pray that the UFC makes it happen . . . .Vitor vs. Brian Stann, absolute war with almost a guranteed finish and one in which I cannot pick a favorite! What's your take?
Stann is coming off a loss and Belfort off a win. Otherwise, it makes a ton of sense.
Is it really MMA "Live" at 2:30AM ET?
You must not be a TV guy, Ryan. There are plenty of shows that have 'Live' in the title that don't actually air live.
Nick Diaz on the MMA Live Set: Can you imagine it?!?
Would love to see it. Diaz wouldn't, I trust.
Nobody's question raised a good one for me. Does it make you uncomfortable eating with them because of their strict diet?
Not at all. And many of the fighter diets aren't all that strict when they aren't in camp. And I can't always eat as poorly as I'd like because HDTV is very unforgiving. If I weigh 155, I look like I weigh 170.
If Donald Cerrone gets past siver who do you see him fighting at 155? Gotta give him a top 5 guy right? Gray Maynard?
Gotta give him a top 5 guy. It's sort of tricky now b/c both Guillard and Maynard are coming off of losses. Those fights make sense, but Cerrone won his last time out. Perhaps an exception would be made.
If Alistair Overeem beats Lesnar do you think he will get an immediate title shot?
You think i should fight if im not 100%
No. But I know you to be stubborn and you're also a company guy.
If Silva and Bones do fight, who wins? JA you da man!
I'd go with the bigger guy.
Jon- will you please talk Kenny into retiring. I can't understand why you think he is any good.
He has more UFC finishes than both Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar have UFC wins. His record at 155 lbs. speaks for itself.
post all upcoming radio show's you will appear on your twitter
Will do, hoss.
And if you hit me up on Twitter (@Jon_Anik), I try to get back to 90% of the replies.
I don't know if UFC 137 will get past 400k PPV buys. I'm one of the biggest Penn fan in the world but it is Halloween weekend and most college students (like myself) will be preoccupied.
Could be a factor, Steve. We'll see how it all plays out.
Who's saying Lesnar isn't 100%?
No one, really. But he's a much smaller version of the guy who was the UFC heavyweight champion. I'm just hopeful that he is healthy. That's all.
How do you think Josh Barnett would fare in the UFC heavyweight division?
Quite well. His style is tough to handle.
Jon- what fighter from the past would still be successful now? Florian is awful too.
Why are you killin' Kenny, Dan? I was disappointed that he wasn't more aggressive down the stretch against Jose Aldo, but he's a very accomplished mixed martial artist. I think a prime Pat Miletich could do some work in the current-day UFC.
How can college kids afford a PPV???
11 guys, $5 apiece.
bad teacher or bridesmaids?
Didn't see Bad Teacher. Saw Bridesmaids. Was funny, albeit not as funny as I thought it would be.
Why does Andy Silva have to fight Jon Jones to be considered GOAT this isnt the 90's we have weightclasses now.
No one said that was the case. Silva is the GOAT for me.
I take it back!!! Cerrone vs. Guillard gets me almost as amped as Vitor vs. Stann would . .. make an exception Dana, WAR!!!
Alright, men and women. Gotta run. Overflow questions can be sent my way on Twitter- @Jon_Anik - and I'll try to hit you back later today. MMA Live is 2:30AM ET/11:30PM PT on Friday night. Chael Sonnen and Kenny Florian in Bristol. And next week's chat will likely be moved to Thursday, so be forewarned. Thanks for being here. -JA
