Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Well hello there and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. We've got 6 weeks done and many more to go in the football season, so let's get moving. The staff rankings are already posted for this week, so check 'em out and it might answer your question. Otherwise, here we go! Thanks for showing up!

William (Iowa)

I am thinking about dropping Cutler and picking up Carson Palmer, Cutler just hasnt produced, and could Palmer do any worse?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Well yeah, he absolutely could do worse, but I don't think Palmer will. Palmer wasn't so bad last season, though his numbers are aided by throwing a million passes. I don't see Oakland throwing 40 times per game. But Cutler is a mess, so yeah, I would go with Palmer. I am surprised he is starting this week, after not playing at all for like 10 months. I guess the Raiders really didn't want Kyle Boller starting!

Sean (Auburn)

Looking forward to your Tebow blog post. Who do you like for the rest of the season - Tebow or Freeman?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Should be posted soon. I like Tebow. Perhaps I like him statistically more than most. I ranked him 15th for QBs the rest of the season, but I could see him up around 10 or 11 in a week or two. I mean, what's so special - statistically - about Flacco or Matt Ryan or Freeman? I ranked Freeman better than Tebow. I think that's the safe play. But Tebow could be tremendous just by running and completing the occasional pass.

Robert (FL)

EK, I see your rankings for the week, but would you rather use a waiver wire pick on Battle or Murray?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

On one hand, I think Battle has a better chance to be starting in a month. Felix Jones will return by then for Dallas. I don't think Murray is necessarily special. But I also don't think the Chiefs are bound to Battle. Play for now, and go with Murray.

Studebaker (NJ)

Roddy White a good buy-low? Would McGahee/Wayne get it done?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

No idea what someone in your league might or might not do. I would trade those two guys to get White, but I also don't think White is a good buy low option. I wrote the other day he's out of my top 10 WRs, and believe it's a trend. And McGahee looks well on his way to 1,200 rushing yards. Moreno is clearly the backup in Denver.

Perplexed (in NY)

Hey EK, Need advice on a trade offer just made to me. I get Lloyd and Sid Rice for SJax. I have Foster & CJ2K along with M.Lynch

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

If you need WR help it makes sense, but the best player in the trade is the RB. And let's just say having Lynch as your third RB isn't so great. But I see Lloyd and Rice being helpful.

Sean (Auburn)

Any news on Gates? Did he practice today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I did not rank him for this week, and I suspect this will be more of a game-day decision on Antonio Gates. Hey, we warned you about this a month ago. This foot problem might never go away for him.

clark (clarksville)

colston or earnest graham at the flex? i have graham on my team but would have to drop him to pick up colston

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Colston is a free agent in your league? Wow. Get Colston.

Chris (Cincinnati)

Hey Eric, what do you think about Jermichael Finley for ROS? Buy-low or is he really not a big part of the GB offense? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

He's fantasy's No. 5 tight end for the season. I think he's doing fine. Sure, not all weeks is he getting attention, but there are many options in Green Bay. I'd buy low to a degree, but this is also a deep position. I wouldn't trade a top RB or WR to get him if someone like Fred Davis or Jake Ballard is sitting there on free agency.

Pete (San Antonio)

Am I going to regret dropping Maurice Morris for Greg Little?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I don't think anyone will ever regret cutting Morris, but this week he could very well be the team's feature back. Enjoy the 6 fantasy points. Little has better upside.

Keith (Chicago)

I saw there was no Antonio Brown ranked this week, why the change? It was only one game and he should get a lot of targets this week, No?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Pretty sure I ranked him, but can't speak for others. I didn't rank him in the top 40 WRs, though. At some point the guy has to score or make things happen. This should be a nice week for him.

J.B. (PA)

Mr. Karabell: A few weeks ago I grabbed Jackie Battle from our FA wire. In a PPR league would you say his value is better or worse than Sproles ROS? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I would prefer Sproles, and it's not close. But I also don't see KC necessarily sticking with Battle the rest of the way. It's been one week and it's not like he's a major part of their future at 28.

Rob (BoTown)

Eric, do you agree with Tristan... Drop Cruz and Tolbert for Tebow and Murray (even if you already have sufficient depth at RB/QB)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I always agree with Tristan. Well, mostly. If you don't need a QB I can't say I like that tradeoff, but then again you could always trade Tebow. He will be good.

Mark R (Charlotte)

Better season from now on in a PPR league, M. Turnner or MJD?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Neither are catching passes, but straight up it's still Jones-Drew.

Cole (TX)

What do you make of Ben Tate's ROS value? Is he worth picking up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Have a feeling Arian Foster isn't 100 percent still, and Tate did get some decent carries last week, including one at the goal line. I'd try to keep him around, even in shallow leagues.

Ryan (Asheville, NC)

Still hurting from losing Jamal Charles in my 16 team league. who do you like best for ROS? Roy Helu, Kendall Hunter, or Ronnie Brown?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

That's one of the issues with deep leagues, that they are so affected by major injuries. I'd say Helu, frankly. You know at some point he'll get a chance. Torain can't stay healthy. Hightower is already hurt. Shanahan is interesting. You don't want Ronnie Brown.

Rob (Chicago)

Is Gronkowski for Stevie Johnson a reasonable deal? I have Pettigrew and need WR help. Thanks EK!

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Looks good. Pettigrew is getting a ton of targets, too, and might not be any worse than Gronk the rest of the way.

Heath (Portland, ME)

Do you see Jimmy Graham keeping up the pace or is he a sell high candidate?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I doubt he'll get 100 yards every single week, but I do see him as fantasy's top tight end the rest of the season. But would I move him for help elsewhere if I had a top 10 TE like Pettigrew? Yep.

Knowshon Moreno (Denver)

Does my value increase with Tebow at Quarterback? or am I done as a productive fantasy rb while on the Broncos?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I don't think Moreno is officially done, but clearly he wasn't producing the way the team wanted, and McGahee is. If McGahee stumbles or gets hurt, Moreno gets another chance. That's how it works. I think we all overrated Moreno.

Eric (Toronto)

you have Sprooles and Thomas ranked side by side. i assume in a ppr .5ppc you go sprooles? or trade thomas for sjax? thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Yes. In PPR Sproles is much better. Daniel Thomas versus Steven Jackson, though, it's close. Jackson will catch passes but the injury risk is greater.

Jerry (in a vacuum)

Cam Newtow = what WR in a straight up trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Right now he's better than every WR, but I'd say someone like Bowe or DeSean makes sense.

Mike (FL)

Hey E.K. How do you feel about Blount? Is he someone you would try to buy low on given his injury? Or stay away?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Depends what I'm dealing, but I see him back and producing at normal levels in 2 weeks.

Perry (Cali)

To your Mgahee 1200 yds quote. Don't you think Tebow somehow much those yds minute since Willis will lose at least 3 or 4 TDs to Tebow?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I do think McGahee will lose some scores to Tebow, but he'll get the yards.

Ben (FL)

Why do the rankings never match the projections? ie MJD is ranked 9th but Earnest Graham is projected for more points this week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Beats me. I don't have a hand in the projections. I do like Graham this week, but not more than MJD.

Troy (Toronto) [via mobile]

Would you trade calvin Johnson for either of these packages: Roddy/Manningham or Jennings/AJ Green?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I like the second one better, because Green is legit. But I would only deal CJ if my second WR was seriously lacking and I needed the depth.

Garick (Cincinnati)

Come on EK, I know you probably hate any questions associated with the Redskins backfield...but do you like Torain as a RB2 or flex this week???

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Back-end RB2, but I think I've made it clear Shanahan could do just about anything and it wouldn't surprise me. He could give Helu 17 carries. He could give Torain 25 or 2. I mean it.

Howard (Yardley, PA)

Crabtree of Colston ROY? Go FLYERS!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Go Flyers indeed! What a great start for them. It's nice having goaltending. Anyway, it's Colston. I don't trust the SF passing offense one bit. Brees, on the other hand, throws a ton.

JT (NC)

Who is your survival pick lock to win this weekend?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I've got Dallas this week, mostly because I can't see the Rams winning on the road against a good team. Dallas has talent. I thought about Baltimore, but will save them for later.

Drake (Texas)

Why does everyone think Tebow will run EVER TD in? This isn't the SEC this is the NFL. I don't think John Fox wants his staring QB with 15 carries a game...

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Tebow ran for a touchdown in every game last season. I don't think he rushes for 10 touchdowns, but he's enough of a threat and should get 50 yards per game. That's still 5 points there. Mcgahee will still score touchdowns, too.

Sean (Auburn)

I know this is wildly premature, but just for fun. Who's the top RB in Fantasy Drafts next year? top WR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I like it! Safe answer would be McFadden and Calvin Johnson, right? So I will say them, but I also think Peterson and Andre Johnson are safe.

Shane (Seattle, WA)

You've got the SD defense ten spots higher then the DEN defense. Both are on the road coming off of bye's, but don't you think John Fox's knowledge of Matt Moore could make DEN a sneaky play this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

It's a bad Denver defense, though, so even if the coach knows the opposing QB - there are no secrets - it doesn't mean they can stop him. The Denver D is bad. Hard to trust they'll get another defensive touchdown.

Jon (Atlanta)

That coupled with the fact that it is Matt Moore.

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I wouldn't judge him too harshly; it was the Jets. We project Moore pretty well this week.

Patrick (Penn.)

So that's why Philly hasn't given D. Jackson a contract! It's because Malcin is averaging 10pts to his 9pts.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I'd pay the man but not what he wants. And I'd wait until February. Health is the biggest issue with DeSean. But he and Maclin are top 15 WRs.

Andrew (SD)

What are your thoughts on Harvin ROS with the QB change

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

It couldn't be worse. Honestly, in this case I actually think Harvin will improve statistically wiht a rookie QB. McNabb is a mess. For the Vikings to have thought otherwise is just foolish. Did they not see his work with Washington? And now he's saying he doesn't understand why he's benched. Good team guy, too.

matt (work)

why isn't anyone thinking ronnie brown gets a legit shot at carries in detroit? that's a good offensive team featuring a injury prone 3rd down back and mo freaking morris.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

You're assuming Ronnie Brown is still good at football. Why is he any better than Mo Morris? Plus, they rarely run.

Wayne (KCMO)

Just traded James Starks away for Daniel Thomas... who won?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

You. Easily. Good job.

Pablo (NJ)

Eric-do you expect Gates to play sunday?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I do not. I'd run away from this situation if I had him in any leagues, but then again, I'd never draft a tight end in the third or fourth round, and that's where he went.

Cole (Tx)

If Demaryius is healthy, and I know that's a big if, how do you see him perfmoring the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

He's a bigger question mark than Tebow. I see Eddie Royal having just as big an impact the next month or so. But Thomas is a future WR1, in theory, so we have to consider him.

Joel (MI )

One Kicker Question please !!! With Akers' bye do I drop him out right or is he valuable to hold on to ? Looking at Carpenter for this week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Drop every kicker every time. I never consider keeping a kicker around on a bye week. Ever. There's no evidence to do so.

J.B. (PA)

Is one a stronger play than the other this week between Flacco and Cassel? Seems like they are just about even.

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I like Cassel. Comes off a 4-touchdown game and faces a defense allowing the third-most points to fantasy QBs.

Norm (Boston)

Since you have Hillis ranked, I am assuming you ranked Hardesty based on on Hillis playing. If he doesn't play, thoughts on Hardesty? Deciding between him, Tolbert and Little at flex.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

True. But if Hillis sits, I wouldn't move Hardesty up that much. Perhaps 5 or 6 spots.

Bill (portland, me)

any chance you start cassel over rivers this week at Jets?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Some chance, but I'd just start Bowe over Vincent Jackson. It's one guy on the Jets to avoid. One. And he's covering Vincent.

M Ditka (Chicago)

Trade DeAngelo Williams for Mike Williams (TB)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Can't say I'd trade for either one, but no, I'd keep DeAngelo around.

Mitch (NC)

Similar to kicker question, do you keep your D if you have a good one on the bye? I usually keep two.

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Would have to be Ravens, Jets, Packers or Steelers. Perhaps Lions. Depends on the league.

Jono (DC)

Chris Johnson for Starks and Colston- who wins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Keep Chris Johnson. He will get better.

JDK (ATL)

Why would you keep DeAngelo around? What inspires hope?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Well, he did have 100 yards two games ago. I think the Carolina defense can improve, which would necessitate fewer come-from-behind outings for Cam, and they could establish the run better. But even then, at 10 carries per game... I don't have a ton of hope here, but DeAngelo is talented.

Cody (Pitt)

I'm not afraid of the Jets secondary, including Revis. Marshall had 6 for 109 and you saw how great his offense is.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Marshall should have scored, too. For some reason he scurried out of bounds. Weak.

Travis (MI)

Trade Mark Ingram for Brandon Lloyd? I am weak at WR.

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Seems reasonable. I like Ingram this week, but it's a giant timeshare in New Orleans. Daniel Thomas should do better in Miami.

Matt (MD)

Was Hillis a one-year wonder or does he get back on track soon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Seems reasonable. I like Ingram this week, but it's a giant timeshare in New Orleans. Daniel Thomas should do better in Miami.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

I'm taking the under on a 1,000-yard season at this point. Health is a factor. Browns should have just dealt him this week if they didn't want him.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Is Jordy Nelson this year just a best case scenario Meachem? 14-15 points is nice, but on 1 or 2 catches its a little scary to hope for that.

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Interesting comparison, actually. I think Nelson is still more than that, but yes, Rodgers has many options.

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Sorry folks, some Internet issues going on in Bristol.
