Hi all. Let's chat!
Does Hawaii have the worst place kicking game in college football history? I'm sure there have been worse, but it can't be by much. We've all lost track of the number of blocked/missed PATs and FGs.
Navy's has been pretty brutal, too. But how about Hawaii tries hanging onto the football. My word all these turnovers have made my head hurt, too!
Is Fresno State the biggest mystery team among all the non-AQs? They've looked horrible most of the season but have had moments of brilliance too (for example, the first half at Nebraska and the second half last week vs. Utah State). Is there any way to get a read on the Bulldogs at all?
I am completely stumped. I have picked wrong EVERY SINGLE GAME this year for Fresno. I mean they are terrible against Cal but good against Nebraska for most of the game? Then they smack down a Utah State team that has been pretty decent. I am just as confused as you are.
Andrea, when Boise's offensive back-ups take the field - as they have for at least a quarter in almost every game this season - they haven't scored many points. Does this auger badly for next season (with no Kellen Moore, Nate Potter etc) or is there an unwritten rule that when the opposition has been hammered for three quarters, you ease up in the fourth?
I really don't think it has anything to do with next season. I think Boise State is trying not to run up the score, honestly.
Case Keenum for Heisman and spokesperson for Metamucil and Centrum Silver! Barring the strangest of situations, obviously Case won't win, but will he at least get an invite to the ceremony?
Ha! I hope you all saw my video yesterday when I talked about him being the candidate no one is mentioning right now. Case has ZERO votes in our Heisman poll right now. So I am not sure what his chances are of getting an invite to NYC. A lot of teams are going to have to lose, and a lot of players are going to have to stumble for him to get a shot. I think I mentioned this last week, but I think people perceive him to be a system QB.
Who has been the most disappointing team so far this year? For me it's Hawaii.
Hawaii has been a downer, considering the teams the Warriors have lost to this season. I also think UCF at 3-3 has been a disappointment
Does Boise State hold the key to AQ status for the MWC/CUSA and the Big East? They are the only team not in an AQ conference that has the ranking to make the AQ formula work. Also, is it a good idea for Boise State to join the Big East with the possibility that they could lose AQ status anyway? I look at the travel and 4-6 Boise Games would be 2000+ mile plane rides.
I am not sure MWC/CUSA gets AQ whether Boise stays or not. CUSA brings no real value there because it has never had a team make it to a BCS game. The league is just as bad at the bottom as the MWC, too. And conference strength top to bottom is a huge factor in getting AQ. ... Remember that if Boise joined the Big East, the $$ windfall would be much, much greater than what it would stand to get with the MWC, whether the BE retains AQ status or not. If the BE goes to 12 teams with a West Division, travel would be much more palatable with 4 road games, 3 that would be in its region.
Will Georgia winning out the rest of their games and maybe the SEC championship help BSU for which BCS they make it to. At this point it is almost a given that they will play in a BCS
Boise has to win 'em all first, right? You probably thought it was a given at this point last year, too. I don't think Georgia has any bearing on which BCS game Boise State goes to. BUT it might have one if Boise is the only undefeated team in the nation and trying to get into the national title game.
Air Force going to the smurf turf what do you thinnk their chances are pulling off the road win?
Boise was undefeated in WAC play and nearly unstoppable at home. I saw the offense first hand last week and if the defense had a hard time vs. Notre Dame, it is going to be even harder vs. Boise. Broncos win.
OK Andrea, last time i posted, you picked Navy over Southern Miss and that didnt pan out so well for you... So, here's your chance for redemption, who do you like this weekend, SMU or USM?
Do I get points for picking Southern Miss to win the East? No. Fine. I will take Southern Miss in this one.
Do you think the winner of the Nevada Fresno game has the upper hand in winning the WAC after Hawaii and Utah St. lost?
Maybe, but there is so much parity in this league I am not going to say the winner here wins the conference, even if it means they stay undefeated in WAC play.
Would Air Force really like to be in the Big East? I think it wold be cool to play better competition than Wyoming and Colorado St, but at least I can still drive to those games. I think this will hurt the fans...
Air Force is very much interested in joining the Big East. The AD has been very forthright about this. I think being in a league with Navy is appealing, but I am trying to figure out what else. I guess the increased $$ and exposure.
Even with the potential additions of Boise, Air Force, etc. will it be enough for the Big East to save AQ status?
I wish I had an answer, Justin. There is nothing that specifically says how a conference loses its AQ status; the BCS is up for renegotiation next summer and there are going to be plenty of ideas on the table for how to tweak this system.
1. Do you think Marshall's Vinny will give Houston too many problems?2. Houston or Marshall Who's your pick?
Vinny Curry gives every team problems, let's be real! He is a tremendous player. I pick Houston. But I do give credit to Marshall for the way it has played this season. Better than I thought.
In your opinion, is BYU better off being an independent or should they push harder towards a Big XII invite?
BYU has worked so hard for this day that I think it should see how independence works. Remember, BYU has its own TV network, and that is something any new conference has to be willing to accept. It was a major stumbling block with the MWC.
Boise to the Big 12...is that likely?
Not at this time.
Hi Andrea, What do think Houston's chances are for a BCS Bowl birth if the Cougars go undefeated?
Depends on Boise State. If the Broncos lose, the chances are greater. If they don't, then I am not sure Houston a) Finishes in the Top 12 or b) gets in as an at-large.
Andrea, last week you said Fresno State was the nation's biggest disappointment. Now the Bulldogs are alone atop the WAC standings at 2-0. Since you admit you always pick the wrong result for Fresno State, do you think Nevada will beat them this week? Please pick the Wolf Pack!
Hey I am sure Bulldogs fans everywhere agreed with me about them being a disappointment! Do you know how many comments I get during these chats that say Pat Hill should be fired. Let's see Nevada has won 3 straight in the series and is at home. I have no idea what to make of the Wolf Pack's QB situation. But I will pick Nevada based on home field and recent success vs. Fresno. We'll see how this one turns out.
How many undefeated teams need to lose for Boise to have a chance at getting into the National Championship?
All of them from AQ conferences. Even then, who knows if a one-loss SEC team (like LSU or Bama) finishes ahead.
what do you think about, Louisiana Lafayette of the sun belt. Do you think they would be the surprise team of the year with a 10-2 or 11-1 record at the end of the year.
Absolutely, Corey. They are this year's version of Miami (Ohio). Stay tuned for a story tomorrow on the blog, posting at 3 p.m. ET.
Andrea, why won't the MWC invite Utah ST? Good basketball program, and despite the 2nd half chokes, they are obviously an improving football program under Gary Andersen.
One thing that was mentioned on the call last week with Craig Thompson and Britton Banowsky is that they are not ruling out expanding further. So stay tuned.
If the WAC gets Boise State and Air Force for non-football purposes, it will then be hard for them to reach the 9 football/12 full membership model that Benson had intended. Would it be better for the WAC to go to 12 football and 16 full members to ensure stability a la the Big East?
Where is the WAC going to find 12 football members?
What are the chances Boise State stays in the Mtn. West and could they possibly get BYU to reconsider its move to independent? Would adding BYU, Fresno St., & Nevada be enough to garner AQ status?
I don't think BYU is going to drop independence to go back to the MWC. See my previous comment on the BYU TV network.
Andrea, I have question for you. Back when Art Briles was at UH and we had Kevin Kolb as are QB everyone called him(Kolb) a systems qb, now that Art Briles is at Baylor and runs almost the same offensive system nobody calls Robert Griffin a system qb. Why is that?
It is all about perception, Rick. I think they see some of the things RGIII does and believe it is his talent and not the system that has gotten him his numbers. The non-AQs generally get labeled in this manner.
Don't forget that the Big East would be establishing a western division. I think most Boise fans want to go to an AQ conference bad enough that they'll take the Big East if they're the only option available. We certainly don't want to listen to whiners talking about how we turned down a conference upgrade for the next five years until the Big-12 comes to their senses and invites us.
IF the Big 12 comes to its senses. Right now I think it is perfectly happy having taken on non-AQ (TCU) and is not going to be looking at Boise State any time soon. But yes, I did mention the West Division idea being quite appealing.
With news of the CUSA and Mtn West "merger" for football my question is how can they do this without a work around the rule that states a conference can only play a championship game when all schools in a "division" play each other in a round robin as the SEC, ACC, Big 10 and Pac 10 currently do???
Good question. They are going to need to get NCAA legislative relief to do so.
Andrea, since the Big East door appears to have closed for Temple (thanks to Villanova's insecurity), can you see the Owls as an option for the new CUSA/MWC merger? Is there hope that Temple will still end up in a BCS conference in the near future? Tell me something positive!!
I think a lot of that depends on how many teams are lost to the Big East. There is the potential for 5 to be gone (UCF, Houston, SMU, Boise State, AFA). However, the CUSA/MWC does not need to be at 22 total schools. They have worked on various models, going as high as 24. I do not have high hopes for a BCS conference, though.
So, other than an SEC team, which other 1-loss teams could finish ahead of an undefeated 12-0 Boise State. I would think there would be some hesitancy to put Oregon and Oklahoma in front of them based on recent history (particularly Oregon) and I just don't see a 1-loss Clemson or Wisconsin or Stanford finishing in front of Boise.
I would have to ask Brad Edwards about this because he runs the numbers, but I would think the SEC has the best shot. I am not sure on the others. I am not even sure how the coaches/Harris poll would vote. I think what really would help is if the undefeated teams lost late in the year. Less likely for them to climb back up.
Andrea, say Boise does go to a BCS bowl against a top tier SEC team or even a top tier Big 12 team, yet still loses. Do you think if depends on how they lose? Or will people think Boise would have just lost all their crediblity?
I think it depends, but I lean toward losing credibility. Unfortunately for the non-AQ teams, there is a "what have you done for me lately" that permeates everything they do. People are waiting for them to slip and when they do they point and laugh and say see I told you so. This is especially true of Boise State, a team that has become so polarizing because its critics believe it does not do enough to play "any time, any where."
I am suicidal over Temple not getting into the Big East. I mean don't get me wrong, I love the school (will be in undergrad for 6 years!) Can you shed some light into why I shouldn't just quit and transfer to a more successful school that has a chance at post-season success?
Chris, please step away from all sharp objects and any ledges/balconies or bridges. Please tell me you are not in school because of the athletic program, unless you are an athlete yourself. You will have an awesome degree. Does that not count for something??
Andrea, who do you see winning the MAC this year? Seems like Temple is the hands-down favorite in the East. What about the West? Can we get some MAC predictions?
I had thought Miami and Ohio would be better but Temple is playing great with Bernard Pierce. What a terrific year for him. Toledo in the West.
If the Mtn West and CUSA merger were in place this year how much fun would a Boise vs Houston game be for a title?
Not as fun as you might think. I don't see how Houston D stops Boise.
Kyle from Reseda is going for reverse psychology here, but he'll be suffering from reverse-reverse psychology this weekend....
Ummm ... yes?
How do you think BYU will finish this season? 8-4 is a safe bet, but Hawaii and TCU aren't as strong as we thought they were coming into this season...
Well I was wrong with my 3-1 prediction to start the season. Having to recalibrate ... At least 9-3. I would be shocked if it was 8-4 the way Nelson is playing right now.
Do you think there should be another split for D1 football? Right now we have D1-A and D1-AA (I refuse to use the stupid acronyms they came up with down the road), but don't you think that at this point, the difference between AQ and non-AQ is so vast that it merits another split?
That is something that has been bandied about for quite some time, Chris. I think that will become an eventuality whenever we get into superconference model time.
Hi Andrea, is the Big East making a big mistake not inviting Temple to join? Seems like the decision is based solely on Villanova complaining because they do not want to compete with the Owls in basketball. Temple football has become a viable product, as this will almost certainly be the Owls 3rd consecutive bowl-eligible season. What gives?
Goal No. 1 is to help keep AQ status. Temple does little there. You might be asking SMU? Houston? Well BE needs a West Division to make sense for Boise/AFA.
How easy/hard will it be for the Boise State Defense to stop the Triple Option offense of Air Force?
Well it certainly is not going to be easy, especially for a team that does not see it often and has never played AFA. That being said, the Boise front is solid, so I think the Broncos will be able to contain them.
ECU got no invite, even as football only. What may the reasoning for that? Or is it just this poor season?
Never has been much momentum for ECU. As I have said a few times, AQ status has been priority. UCF and Navy provide better media markets -- Navy has a national following. The other 4 that have been mentioned are out West, which has become a priority, too.
Should June Jones be in the conversation for Coach of the Year? I know Snyder has K-State rolling, but SMU is 5-1 with a win over crosstown rival TCU and has SMU sniffing a Big east invite.Your thoughts?
Well I don't think the BE invite has anything to do with COY. What he's done has been great, but he is going to have to get in line. Clemson. K-State (HELLO!). I am sure Saban/Miles will be considered, too, if they can run the table with that schedule.
Same can be said about Boises "D" Stopping Houston's Offense.
Not sure if you have seen Boise play, but I think Case would be scrambling a lot for his life.
Unlikely, scenario but what if Georgia wins the SEC title and there is a 1 loss Bama and LSU? Could LSU or Bama still to to the national title game?
If C-USA gets raided, who do they look to as replacements? I think Lousiana Tech has to be high on the list because them in the WAC makes no sense geographically. Would they look at teams like FIU or Troy?
I think La Tech should be considered whether it gets raided or not. After that, I am not sure what CUSA will do, to be honest.
People always seem to get Boise State confused with Fresno State. Never have they said anyone, anytime, anywhere. They've said, "If the finances work out right, we'll play you." They're trying to expand their stadium, improve facilities, etc. to make themselves more likeable by AQ conferences. You don't do that by sacrificing home games or accepting 2-1s without a good payback. When the finances work, they've played anyone who was willing to make the finances work...usually on the road.
You are right, Jim. I think I have typed that answer in live national chats every single week.
Andrea - Why haven't we heard more about TCU's defense and especially Tank Carder? He was pre-season MWC defensive player of the year. Are teams just game planning to avoid him?
Oh there has been plenty said about TCU's defense, none of it good. Carder has a lot on him, especially with Brock out for the season (and he has had to overcome an injury as well). I don't think he's doing as great as he did last year, but coach Gary Patterson says he is coming on strong now.
Andrea, Chris Nolfi is a name that some very bored (and apparently unemployed) Villanova fans have impersonated in the past in internet chats. I don't think you need to worry about anyone being suicidal over the Big East. In fact, I would be more concerned about the mental health of the imposter!
Well that is a relief, Bill. Thanks for being my watchdog out there.
Will my broncos go to the big east? Last, why do people knock Boise's SOS, last time I checked it was 26? Not bad! I still think we have a shot at the title game, have faith Andrea and Bronco Nation!
I wish I had an answer for you on the Big East. SOS -- computer ranking much better than Wisconsin.
I almost hate to jinx it, and I know they've played 2 FCS schools this year, but Eastern Michigan is better than I've seen them in years; their defense is stout, and if they weren't so one-dimensional on offense they might have given Joe Paterno agita. What do you think the odds of them winding up bowl-eligible are?
I noticed. But I am not sure on bowl eligibility because they have to get 7 wins, having played 2 FCS teams and it looks to me the MAC is going to have a bunch of bowl eligible teams this season. Still, Ron English should be applauded for his efforts so far this season.
andrea do you think wyoming has a good chance at 8 and 4 or even 9 and 3?
New Mexico is the only gimme on the remaining sked, so if the Cowboys get there, who on earth are they upsetting?
Was the San Jose St/ Hawaii game the most embarassing div 1 football game you have ever seen? Players not able to secure the ball, interceptions, etc...Good win for San Jose St, but wow they really embarrassed themselves last week on natl television.
Well I am not going to say it was the most embarassing game I ever saw. Certainly both teams did themselves NO favors with the way they turned the ball over. Hawaii, with those special teams mistakes, oh man. It was not a great performance, that is for sure. But I know coach MacIntyre will take it, after winning just once all of last season.
Your pick for national freshman of the year at this point in the season?
Gotta be Sammy Watkins at Clemson.
Just a statement---I watch more non-AQ football than the AQ, those kids playing for that play for love of the game, most of them realize they won't make it to the next level and in my opinion routinely outplay their AQ counterparts. Its also more fun to watch them.
If you aren't good enough to win your conference than how are you good enough to play for the myth?
It's happened before!
Andrea, do you have a Hawaii-New Mexico State prediction for this week? Hawaii has been lackluster and NMSU has at least upgraded from terrible to average.
That is the perfect way to summarize this game. Hawaii has played much better at home, and this one is in Aloha Stadium, a really tough place to win. So Hawaii.
Is Southern Miss v. Southern Methodist a preview of the CUSA title game?? And how confusing will the bottom line on espn be? SMU vs. USM
I still like Houston in the West.
Can you explain the Ragin Cajuns' turn around this year?
Sure. In a blog post tomorrow! But I will give you a sneak peak. I talked to Coach Mark Hudspeth this week, and he basically says his guys bought in to his message completely and right from the start. They have gotten solid play out of QB Blaine Gautier and have relied on a lot of really good true freshmen as major contributors.
Hey Andrea - There's a fine line between genius and insanity. It seems to me that the Big 12 should just pick up all the BE football schools as full members, maybe add Temple to that for seven which would make a 16 team conference with an east and west division. They would be great in both football and basketball. Genius or insanity?
Why would Texas or Oklahoma want this exactly? This is not genius at all.
Hey Andrea. Is it really that smart for programs for Boise St and Air Force to join an AQ (maybe soon to be non AQ) conference as a football only member? I mean, this seems opposite to a formula of success. Where do the olympic sports go? What conference would accept them as non football schools? It's like trying to emulate ND or BYU but without the national following to back up the program. Seems like a recipe for disaster.
Their other sports would go to a non-AQ conference, maybe even back to the WAC. One thing that Boise has said is that it would like to keep its sports together but that cannot happen with the Big East. It has to be about football first. The non-football sports hardly matter, and that is the sad truth of what is happening in college sports.
Andrea, are you ready to admit that you were somewhat incorrect about Temple's hiring of Steve Addazio? The players and alumni all love him and he's already doing a great job both recruiting and coaching in year one! Are Florida fans insane for their open hatred of him? All the haters need to give Coach Addazio some much-deserved props!
Florida fans are not insane, just ... spoiled. Although I have to say I did question his play calling at times as OC. That being said, he did an underrated job as the "acting HC" while Urban was out on sabbatical, holding together the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. I don't think I was wrong to have ? about how he would do as a head coach, but I was wrong to underestimate him and his ability to jump in and succeed right away. He's doing well so far.
I think the WAC has only 2-3 bowl tie ins this year..what happens to that 4th team who is bowl eligible but not picked to play in one of the tie in bowls?
Either gets picked up as an at-large for a bowl that is missing one of its tie-in teams or gets left out all together.
How good do you think Wyoming is? Do you think they have turned the corner or have just gotten lucky for being 4 and 2?
They haven't beaten an FBS team with a winning record yet, right? I think they are better, but I don't know about making a bowl this year.
TULSA MUCH BETTER ALL AROUND PROGRAM THAN SMU WHY AREN'T THEY BEING MENTIONED FOR BIG LEAST?
STOP YELLING AT ME! Media market. Replacing lost Forth Worth/TCU with Dallas.
Why does SMU get so much praise for such little success? I believe they've had 2 bowl seasons (maybe one other I don't know of) since they got hit with the death penalty. But I feel like the moment they made a bowl game, everyone said they're ready for AQ, but some of these schools fight for 5, 6, 7 or more years and still don't even get thought about. What gives?
I am not sure everybody said they were ready for AQ. I think people see this is as a program on the rise, in a big media market, in one of the best recruiting areas in the nation (that more of the BE teams are recruiting, by the way) and that makes SMU appealing.
OK guys and gals thanks for joining me today! See you again next week.
