Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Greetings people and pets. I am excited to see you here and I hope you are staying out of trouble. I dedicate this hour to you.

Just (in time)

Welcome back Paul... We missed you

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

Justin, you are too kind.

Gene (Baltimore)

Paul: Your thoughts on Schaub's performance this week? Been hit with a few nagging injuries! Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:02 PM)

I think it's same for Matt Schaub and Matt Hasselbeck. If they are protected, they'll make plays, If not, they won't and may turn it over.

Micah (London)

Who finishes last in the division, Jags or Colts? Who puts up more passing yards in their match ups, BG or CP?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:03 PM)

I'd guess Colts last and Curtis Painter way more yards.

Zach (Nashville)

Big into the Paranormal Activity series?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:03 PM)

Ummm, no.

Kevin (Houston)

What do you think is attributing the Texans being unable to make the necessary adjustments in the second half to continue dominating teams? Seems to be complete flip flop from last year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:04 PM)

Crazy flip flop. Figure out how to start better and forget how to finish well. Beyond explanation at this point.

Frank (Pell Lake, WI)

Paul, what are your thoughts on the proposed stadium renovations to LP Field?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Think they are great, smart and affordable and should make a big difference for a lot of people who go to games.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, which Titans Dlinemen has played the best this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:07 PM)

Really been a group effort with no singular standout, certainly not week to week.

Jason (Nap Town)

Do you think Jim Caldwell looks like a catfish?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:07 PM)

Not as much a Leroy Harris, according to Vince Young.

Ben (Houston)

Where has Trindon Holliday been for the Texans? He was signed to return kicks and punts and didn't play last week - any word on if he'll play this week?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:09 PM)

He was signed before last week's game and they changed their mind about using him. I fear him, and not in a good way.

Josh (Nashville)

Anything on the progress of Donnie Avery learning and practicing the Titans offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:09 PM)

They are talking him up pretty good this week.

Joseph (DC)

Before this weekend's TD, you rarely saw a completed pass in Powers area (zone or man). Is he that good, other CBs that bad, or a combination of both?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

I'd never throw near him based on the competence level of the other corners.

Myles (Sarasota, FL)

Hey Paul, If Chris Polian would decide on Tressler instead of Caldwell, what offensive scheme do you think Tressler would implement?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

Have to admit I have no idea. We need to seek out an expert on The Ohio State to get a rundown.

Mark (Jacksonville)

How much (if any) does resigning Mike Simms-Walker help the Jags passing game?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:13 PM)

He's probably better than everyone but Mike Thomas. But that says more about who they have than him.

Adam (Brentwood)

TO spotting in Nashville? Does a poor performance by the Titans WR's spark Munch's interest in TO?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:13 PM)

No. Let it go. It's not happening.

Ryan (Omaha)

You remember like 3 or 4 years back when Rashean Mathis was top 10 quality? What happened to that guy, is this age, injury or confidence?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

Mostly age. Also what he's surrounded by.

Mike (Indy)

I noticed on Stampede Blue that you were critical of the Colts drafting in recent years (specifically Ugoh, Brown, Hughes) - what do you think the Colts should have done with those picks instead?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

Yeah, this is an interesting line of questioning. I know you can look at any draft pick who isn't a hit and just pick the guy who was picked later who did hit and say, "They should have taken him." So I don't do that. But I don't think it's unfair at all to say their record of hitting on high draft picks has dropped off significantly. The fact that I can't make a better pick for you than they did doesn't make their bad pick better, does it? I meant they traded up to get Tony Ugoh. They loved him. He needs to be good.

Todd (Murfreesboro)

Paul, do you know why the Titans have been reluctant to use Harper on short yardage downs? He is clearly a harder runner between the tackles than CJ or Ringer

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

Based on what you saw in the preseason? I'm not ready to say take carries away from CJ to give to a rookie.

robert (houston)

Whats up with Justin Tyron, did he get sighned sumwhere else? i was hoping the Texans would sighn him.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

He's with the Giants.

Qwerty Trew (the keys)

Matt Hasslebeck is to Steve Nash as Vince Young is to Stephon Marbury...discuss

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

I accept the premise.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

Steady Bethea surrounded by questions

Jordan (Boise)

So if the Jags find a way to get the offense going a bit and win some games to get to around 8-8, and they are clicking fairly well at the end of the year. Do you see any chance whatsoever that Jack is retained as the coach. With the rookie starting this year at QB, and the improved defense I could see them giving him one more year for a playoff or out the door option. What?s your take?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:20 PM)

You think they can go 8-3 from here? If Jack stayed, he'd have to put together almost an entirely new staff. All their contracts are up. They will all flee if they can. That's not a real lure to good assistants.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, if you had to pick 1 hole that each team in the division should fill next year in the draft, what would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:21 PM)

Colts drafting high just have to get a star player, a perennial Pro Bowler. Jags need receiver and corner, Titans probably same. Texans nose tackle and receiver.

Christopher (FL)

Do you think the Titans should go after TO? Climer says the Titans WR's are subpar without Britt. Yet the Titans didn't get Lloyd, have been slow to get Avery in; when the Texans can get Mason on the field that week with catches. What's the deal with this team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:21 PM)

Absolutely I do not. And please be careful readers and interpreters. How did it go from Titans would take a look (which is what he said) to Titans would sign him? Huge difference.

Erica (Jax, FL )

What is your overall evaluation of Gabbert so far?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

He's made some very good throws, which is an encouraging sign. Is good on the move. A little panicky under pressure. Not yet reliable mechanically. Doesn't have enough help.

Qwerty Trew (the keys)

suddenly the decision to cut Garrard doesn't look so bad? I mean, besides the horrible timing of course, but apparently there was a health concern behind the scenes?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

I don't think they cut him because they thought his back was going to be an issue.

Frank (Pell Lake, WI)

If Munchak does reshuffle the offensive line if the run game isn't producing, who gets benched?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:24 PM)

Reshuffle is too strong. Fernando Velasco would replace Eugene Amano or Leroy Harris.

Jim (Jax)

Who would you recommend, and who do you think we'll see as the Coach and General Manager here (jacksonville) next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

Coach will be Randy Edsall or a young up and comer if Gene Smith is doing the hiring.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

You mentioned on radio shows that you admit there seems to be a disconnect between front office and Caldwell right now, what specifically makes you say this? The Tryon decision?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

Not Caldwell as much as some of his staff. Started with cuts -- coaches wanted guys who were cut, got some guys they didn't want.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Wow you think the Titans need a corner. They are 3 strong plus Tommie C looks promising? Who needs to go if they need a corner?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:26 PM)

If Cortland Finnegan leaves as a UFA, they'll need a corner.

Gil (Jacksonville)

With the return of MSW, do you think the Jaguars will/should move Mike Thomas back into the slot receiver position (in 3+WR sets)?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:26 PM)

I like him in the slot. But he's one of the top third-down receivers as is right now.

Jason (Nap Town)

Saw the Power Rankings. Do you really think the Dolphins are better than the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

If I didn't, why would I have ranked as I did?

Just (in time)

Ok ok... So other than WR and CB, what are the Jags weakest points?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

Edge rusher.

Gil (Jacksonville)

What do you think of GM Gene so far? Does he have the Jaguars' rebuilding ahead of schedule, on schedule or behind schedule?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:28 PM)

How could they possibly be ahead of schedule based on how they look right now? On or behind. Other rookie QBs are doing OK. Cincinnati shouldn't be better than Jacksonville, I don't think, but it is. By a good bit.

Christopher (FL)

Why do you feel the Titans cannot get a Donnie Avery on the field more often and a team like the Texans can get an older Mason on the field quicker and actually catching balls. Is it the coaches or approach to the game?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:29 PM)

The Texans got Mason because they needed someone right away who could help. The Titans bumped everyone up a notch and put Avery at the back of the line. Different approaches/ needs.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:29 PM)

FREE TIP: If you submit the same question over and over, the chances of it being answered shrink.

Sean (Jax, Fl)

Whats your take on the Jags DE John Chick, I love him

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:30 PM)

Me too. Indianapolis should have kept him.

Sean (Jax, Fl)

Best DT combo in the AFC South? Alualu and Knighton?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:30 PM)

Yes, but they've not been as good as I expected.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Would they really not keep Finegan?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:31 PM)

Could franchise him, but it's very costly. They may not have a choice. If they don't tag him, they don't control things.

Titan's Secondary (TN)

So Houston is sitting Andre and Schaub is gimp, who do we need to watch out for? I would assume that Munch will load the box for Foster. Can Mason or Jacoby really hurt us?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:32 PM)

Yes they can. As can Owen Daniels, Kevin Walter, Joel Dreessen and Foster as a receiver.

Raymond (Orlando)

What do you feel the Jaguars must do to win on MNF? It's not like the whole team sucks. Having Sims Walker back also give Gabbert another target.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:33 PM)

MSW is doing very little to close a giant gab between Baltimore and Jacksonville. To win, Jags have to create takeaways.

Matt (Mount Juliet, TN)

The top 2 tacklers in the NFL, by numbers only, are both on the Colts. Angerer has a whopping 73 tackles already. Judging by how the Colts have played so far this year, is it safe to say that a high number of tackles ain't always a good thing?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:34 PM)

Correct. Also it's not an official stats, so it's inconsistent team to team.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, I try to read the blog every day but you know I'm busy with rehab and this coaching gig. Why wasn't I told there would be no chat last week? We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:34 PM)

Are you not following me on Twitter? I'm @ESPN_AFCSouth and @PaulKuharsky.

Matt (Mount Juliet, TN)

Any news from the Titans' coaches on what specifically was looked at during the bye week to get the running game going? I know Palmer said he would be reviewing tape almost the whole time. Just was wondering if they've done anything new this week that they think will get CJ some running room? Or will we just have to wait and see?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

They told me everything in specific detail, but I am not going to share it. #sarcasm

Matt (Nashville, TN)

Is Jacksonville getting to host MNF as kind of a token farewell gift from the NFL? Also, isn't there a point in the season where the NFL/media can start switching prime time games to more meaningful games? If so, at what point does that start and what other details are involved?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

There are flex possibilities for the Sunday night games starting in mid-November. Jags on MNF were to help boost ticket sales. Everyone forgets that SNF is intended to be a premier game now, not MNF.

Allan (Tx)

Paul, what do you see as the key in the Texans - Titans game.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

Which QB gets hit more?

matt (mn)

Must win for Tennessee ?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:37 PM)

No such thing in October.

Patrick (Nashville)

Is it really fair to say defenses are shutting chris johnson down when really is just looks like he's doing it more to himself

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

If there was a big hole, I assure you he'd run through it.

Corey (D.C.)

Do you like any of these shows/movies: The Wire, There Will Be Blood, Beverly Hills 90210, Caillou.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

Love the old BH 90210.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:40 PM)

Today's column, hot off the press: Breaking down Chris Johnson's struggles

Tony (Duval)

Who has the best chance of coming out of retirement? Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:40 PM)

Cowher.

Shaun (Duval)

Jags next coach? Rob Ryan, Bill Cowher or Tony Dungy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:41 PM)

None of the above. I'd expect an offensive background.

No must wins in (October?)

I don't know PK, if the Colts are gonna make the playoffs...I think they've got some must wins coming up REAL quick...

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:41 PM)

Yeah, yeah.

Doug (MD)

Do you think Curtis Painter could potentially get some trade value after this season? He's being surprisingly serviceable... or do you think it's only because of the system familiarity?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:42 PM)

If they draft a QB, then yes. If not, they finally have a decent backup. Why deal him?

Jake (Florida)

Kubiak gets the Texans to a 10-6 record, ties the titans but loses the tiebreaker for the division, and doesn't make the playoffs. Does McNari give him another shot next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:42 PM)

He should not.

Johnny (Duval)

If you had to guess who the Jags next coach will be, who do you think it will be?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:42 PM)

Scroll down.

Andrew (toledo, ohio)

Is Dirk Koetter a good coach?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:43 PM)

I think he is. But he's not at his best right now.

Just (in time)

YOU Paul Kuharsky are a very talented man... How are you able to finish a column in the middle of a chat? Skillz

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:43 PM)

I'll never tell what the timetable for everything is.

Bart (Orange City, IA)

If Caldwell is gone at the end of this season, what type (not necessarily an exact name) of coach do you see them going after A) if Chris Polian is running the show or B) if someone else is calling the shots as GM?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:44 PM)

The B scenario isn't a possibility to me. And I don't know Chris Polian well enough and he doesn't have enough of a track record for me to draw conclusions.

Carlos ((at work......))

How much of a setback could it be for the Jaguars IF coaches/assistants/Gene are let go? Most of their contracts expired at the end of this year and there has been no talk about resigning them back.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:45 PM)

They need to re-sign Gene Smith. You can't let him draft your new quarterback and not see it through. Give him some new guidelines and let him get back to work/ hire a coach.

Matt Hasslebeck (Brentwood, TN)

got my Columbia sweatshirt so I can go as you for Halloween, Paulie...just gotta work on my surly demeanor and pudgy midsection now... ;)

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:45 PM)

That is a classic idea!

Charlie (Nashville, TN)

Best personnel move the Titans have made so far this year: Addition of Hasselbeck or subtraction of a certain ear-splitting radio personality that "entertained" us between quarters?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:46 PM)

Tie.

Midge (Indy)

Your opinion of Drake Nevis thus far?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:46 PM)

Good player. Miss him when he's out hurt.

paul (Indy)

what players did the COLTS cut that you would of kept for the coaches PK? Tommie Harris, kyle devan, of course Tryon, jon chick? who am i missing? oh, definitely kelvin H. ..Polian said in his monday show that hayden was cut because of the injury and he (polian) didnt want to risk it..

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:48 PM)

I saw one report that said he was talking about Marlin Jackson there? Confused a bit. Hayden had a big salary but didn't provide cap savings. I'd rather be out $6 million with him than have this crew. I think you are on the right track.

Hylton (Costa Rica)

Int'l question! I find it interesting the Jags never want to go for a big name talent w/ potential character issues. Gene Smith seems hard line about bringing in "the right kind of guys", but I think someone like Brandon Lloyd, TO, or another big name guy would sell tickets, and if they don't start doing that there might not be a team in jacksonville much longer. After your thoughts on that, % chance in your mind Jags are in Jville 3 years from now?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:49 PM)

They are not going to make personnel decisions based on who sells tickets. And they should not.

Revenge (Served Cold)

Josh Daniels as next Jags coach and he trades a #1 to the Broncos for Tebow?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:49 PM)

Who is Josh Daniels?

William (Duval)

Do you like Jason Hill?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:49 PM)

As a fourth.

Andrew (toledo, ohio)

Does a player have to agree to go on IR?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:50 PM)

No.

Andrew (toledo, ohio)

Wait do Peyton Manning and Mat Hasselbeck really get on here?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:50 PM)

All the time, dude. Except Matt uses both Ts.

Midge (Indy)

Is it weird that Polian has the radio show and not Caldwell? Do other teams' GMs have local shows instead of their HCs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:51 PM)

Don't know for sure. I know most coaches have something. Sometimes you see both with something.

Blake (Nashville)

Do you think Reggie Wayne be realistic, due to his age, in his next contract demands or will he try to sign a huge deal that will make up for his sense of being "under paid" in the past?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:51 PM)

Probably B, but if no one complies, then what?

Christina (Girl Power)

Who has the best LB core in the South. Jags or Houston

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:52 PM)

I said Jags before the season. If Mario Williams was healthy, I'd say Texans now for sure. Without him it's closer but I'd still say Houston.

Hylton (Costa Rica)

Just curious Paul.. what is an average day like for you? How much are you writing, talking to coaches, talking to players? Is your only job working for ESPN? How much direction do you get from your boss at ESPN? Thanks for the time you put in on the AFC South.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:54 PM)

It's mostly me. React to news, see or find interesting stories or stats to share and comment on, make some calls. ESPN is my job, yes. I also do some radio in Nashville.

Jonathan (Bloomington)

Say the Colts get the #2 pick in the draft...who do you see them targeting between: OT (Matt Kalil), WR (Justin Blackmon/Alshon Jeffrey), or DE (Quinton Coples)? As of right now I don't see any CB's being top 10 worthy. But obviously that may change.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:54 PM)

Receiver.

Ryan (Denton)

Do you think Texans are any different this year or is it the same old same old?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:54 PM)

Hard to say they are different, but they still have time.

Jon (Sanford)

All my fellow jags fans are screaming for Justin Blackmon. But I'll take Alshon Jeffrey anyday. Who do you like?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:58 PM)

I like to spend time with my family on Saturdays and not watch much college football, to be perfectly honest. My assessment of college guys usually waits until after the NFL season when I start talking to scouts and looking more closely.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Why do you think Painter has such better chemistry with Garcon than Wayne? Does Wayne get more heavily involved?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:58 PM)

I think it's getting better with Wayne.

Bryon (Jax)

Does the fact the the AFC south is nothing but a borefest contributing to your lack of any real good stories to post on the blog or are you just being lazy here lately?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:59 PM)

I think posts on Antoine Bethea and Chris Johnson today are interesting, so I don't accept your premise.

Phil Selway (a Bunker)

You look more like me than Hasselback

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:59 PM)

Trouble with that is I don't know who you are. Should I?

Jamel (Memphis)

How long of a contract did Matt H get? When can Locker expect to take over the team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

Three years. Year three it might be a debate. Presuming Hasselbeck stays healthy and productive.

Just (in time)

Do you ever bump into fans when your out? Do they buy you beers?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

Like to. Not like people recognize me or anything, but I've head beers with people who've reached out. We both buy.

Jon (Sanford)

Paul, for you to have a life away from football and be with your family is absolutely absurd. I revoke my Jersey Mikes invitation from weeks ago.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

I completely understand.

Midge (Indy)

Seems like Colts have phased out Collins (never said he actually had a concussion). Does he just re-retire or sit through a whole season as Painter's backup?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

He's got a contract. Of course he's the backup.

Chris Polian (Indianapolis)

If i can only sign on of Wayne or Mathis back this offseason, who sould it be? Or should i let them both go?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

You should sign both.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:02 PM)

OK people, that flew. Thanks for quality conversation. Be well.
