Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:02 PM)

Decided to chill in my family room today and watch/listen to Dan Patrick today, while I spend the next 45 minutes or so on this chat. no music today. Let's roll.

raul (rio grande city)

jjtwhat are the odds we beat Philly?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

the same as any other week with this team: 50-50. The Cowboys are consistently inconsistent. They tend to play down to the competition and up to the competition. I won't be surprised with a win or a loss. The defense is better than I thought it would be, though I figured it would hit its stride just about Week 8. The offense has done everything I thought it would except score points. The Cowboys will be back to the 4-point games this week.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Trades will the Texas Rangers will make during the winter?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

So focused on the playoffs and the world series that I haven't given much thoughts to who the Rangers will acquire. They'll let C.J. Wilson go, but they'll sign or trade for a No.2 or No.3 starter to help solidify the rotation. Then they might get another bat. I don't think they want to pay Prince Fielder a ton of money, but they might be willing to pay CC Sabathia a wad of cash.

David Wallace (Trier, Germany)

Hi JJT, In the first games it appeared that the Cowboys offense would rarely snap the ball until the last second meaning the defense could get off the ball better. In the last two games I have seen the Cowboys pick up the pace considerably though not like say the Pats. Has this been a conscious decision on Garett's part? In your view am I overestimating the importance of this?. Thx, Dave

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

Some of it's just the communication process it takes to get the play to the QB and the personnel on the field. I don't think it's a huge deal

Mike (Allentown, PA)

Why has Tony Romo gotten killed by the national media while Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Josh Freeman, and Philip Rivers have all gotten passes? All 4 of those teams were supposed to be better than the Cowboys, the teams have underachieved, and the QBs have been shaky at best. I know Romo blew 2 games but he's been better than those 4 overall. Why don't those 4 take any heat and have analysts (ie. Deion Sanders) say they'll never be able to win a Super Bowl? Should your helmet really make that much of a difference in the criticism you receive?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

I think those guys get plenty of criticism, you're just more sensitive to it because you're a passionate fan. Here's the deal: Tony has set a high standard for himself with his previous performances. I hold him to that standard. If he would like to be held to the standard of an average quarterback, then fine. Until he performs at a consistently high level in the postseason, Romo must just accept the criticism. Winning - and winning alone - will stop it.

will stl [via mobile]

Do u think the cowboys will try throwing to the tight ends alot out of the two tight end sets since they can throw or run out of that formation.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

You have to throw out of that formation just to keep the defense's honest. Rob Ryan is a quality defensive coordinator and there's talent on the defense. I thought they'd be good, but they're better than i figured because Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick are playing well, Anthony Spencer has been above average and Sean Lee has been a beast

Clovis Mike (CA)

What's up Mr. Jean-Jacques. What a turnaround by this defense. Who would of thought that DEFENSE would be the strength of this team. What a coach/character this Rob Ryan guy is. My question, what is this defense missing to be a truly elite/superbowl caliber unit?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

technical glitch. Here's the question for the last answer. Got it?

Justin in Glendale, AZ [via mobile]

When you gonna stop hating on Romo?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

It's not hating,if it's true. Romo has screwed up winnable games this season. That's a fact. Romo has won some games in the fourth quarter. Another fact. I deal in reality - not what you'd like reality to be.

Raphael Lilly [via mobile]

Demarco Murray is a beast. The position should be his to lose for the rest of the season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

How soon they forget? Felix is hurt. I have no problem with him starting, but the running game would probably be ideal if Murray gets 18-20 carries a game and Felix gets 8-10 carries and 3-4 passes

Raphael Lilly, Delaware, OH [via mobile]

Demarco Murray is a beast. The position should be his to lose for the rest of the season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

see previous answer

Terrell (Salisbury, MD)

If Rangers come through, and the Metroplex has two of the current champions, how much pressure does that put on Cowboys and Stars to have good seasons?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

None. The Cowboys try to have a good season every year. They've been trying even when the Mavs and Rangers stunk. The Cowboys run this city. They aren't losing any $$$ because the Rangers and Mavs are doing well. All the local team support each other.

Chris (Atlanta)

Andy Reid 12-0 after bye...Any chance we make it 12-1?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

As I mentioned, nothing would surprise me. I'd probably pick the Eagles because they're at home, though I believe they've lost four straight in Philly.

Phillip Tanner (TX)

Think I will see the field more than Choice Sunday night?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Absolutely. If Murray can handle the 3rd down stuff, then Choice wouldn't touch the ball. Tanner has earned the right to get some more action with his production on the field and his special teams work

Dwight (Ohio)

Any truth to the rumor that Washington is putting feelers out for Tashard Choice now? If so, what would Dallas take to make that trade ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

trade deadline has passed

gil (laredo)

who will win the nfc east? any changes is your opinion..

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

Giants. I think I picked Philly before the season. The Giants player closer to their talent each week than any other NFC East team, though they managed to lose to Seattle a couple of weeks ago.

Travis (VA)

Doug Free, what is going on there this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

I wish i knew. I think his technique has been marginal this season and that has left him vulnerable. He's working as hard as ever, but the results haven't been there. This isn't a try-hard business. A lot of guys try hard. This is about results. The Cowboys need him t play better. Now.

Rick (GA)

So, the Cowboys blew two games (b/c of Romo) that they should have won (Jets/Pats) but they also won two (b/c of Romo) that they should have lost (49'ers/Skins)...aren't they just a .500 team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

pretty much

Brian (Burleson, Tx)

Now that we've seen that Feldman is back to his old self again, Do you believe the Rangers will at least try to sign CJ and CC Sabathia for a strong one, two, three punch? Similiar to the rotation over in Los Angeles??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

Why would you re-sign CJ. He's not worth $80 million over 5 years. he was awful in the postseason. He's not an Ace. He's the next tier below and he'll be 36 at the end of his deal. That's a lot of cash for an old dude at the end of his deal. An old dude who's never been a superstar. I assume Sabathia will return to Yankees. that doesn't mean Feldman becomes the No.1 starter again. Trust JD and Nolan. They have a plan.

Todd(Allentown Pa) [via mobile]

Yes Murray ran for 253 vs. the Rams but I do think now that Fiametta is healthy n a true fullback is in the I formation Murray is the best back to have back there. Felix is still n always was n change of pace back. Not only does Murray have the speed but the frame to take the pounding. Again Felix does not. Thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

Fiametta makes a difference. there's a difference between a FB clearing the hole and a TE and it makes a difference in the running game. Fiametta is blowing dudes up - not just moving them to the side

John T. (North Carolina)

This isn't a question specifically about the Cowboys, but it is something I've been curious about every time I see a college player getting a lot of pre-NFL hype. Let's say I'm Andrew Luck and all my life I've been a Redskins fan. Or because I was born in Washington, D.C., and that's where my family/friends are, that is the team I want to play for. (Better if he had some ties to Dallas...but if wishes were wings...)So can a college player let it be known in advance what team he wants to play for, that he will refuse to play for other teams, and affect his draft position to play for that team? Or is it more the case that, when you reach the level where you're a 1st round draft choice, it's more about the business than who you grew up a fan of or have any particular ties to?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:32 PM)

John Elway did it. Eli Manning did it. Andrew Luck can do it. They key is to go to a strong organization. I'd be rooting for the Colts even if I had to sit for a year behind Peyton. The Dolphins, Vikings and Cardinals all have screwy organizations

Rick (GA)

JJT, two part question -- what do the Cowboys need (aside from a better O-line) to become serious contenders. Also, they have talent but what are they missing to become a team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

You can't say aside from the offensive line...lol. That's huge. Their offensive has been average much of the season. They also need someone other than Ware to consistently get to the quarterback

Jason (Bmore)

Was that you that ridiculed a post last week regarding people clammoring for Tanner, reminding them that Tanner was an undrafted FA and would not factor much?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

I don't think I ridiculed anybody. I think I said I can't get excited about a FA running back from Middle Tennessee, who didn't have a single carry in the regular season. He had 6 carries for 34 yards against one of the worst teams in the NFL. Let's not get carried away. That said, he ran with power and now that I've seen him - even against the Rams - I'd rather see him get the ball instead of Choice

Pro Football Chalk (Dallas)

Do you expect the cowboys to put a Quarterback spy on Michael Vick to contain is running ability?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

Good question. The spy only works if he's athletic enough to run with Vick. Maybe, Victor Butler could do it. That's one of Ryan's dilemmas this week

Rick (GA)

JJT, I know it was the Rams but will you agree that Murray ran hard and broke a lot of tackles....rarely letting the first man bring him down...or at least carrying him for a couple extra yards?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

It's the rams dude

kevin(maryland) [via mobile]

With the emergence of Murray and with Tanner looking good this past game, what are the chances of Choice still being around next season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

None. He's not a favorite of the coach. A little too much me - not enough team. Not a bad guy at all. Just not a good fit for this coach

Jack (TX)

JJT, you were going to answer this last week before your tech issues... What is up with the noise levels at Cowboys stadium? They don't seem to cause any penalties even with 100,000 people there, but the Rangers fans can cause noise issues with half the people in an open air stadium. I understand the importance of the game (for the Rangers), but are Cowboys fans just not aggressive/rowdy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

The Cowboys have always had a pampered wine and cheese crowd. Baseball has always been a working man's sport because he can afford to take his family. I normally don't pay much attention to the whole crowd thing, but I will say the Rangers' crowds have been outstanding. Half the crowd is standing much of the game. They're getting to their feet on two-strike counts. They are, as we say, engaged. It's fun to watch them. It would be nice to see a Cowboys' crowd like that every once in awhile

Aaron (NJ)

With the ridiculously soft upcoming schedule for the cowboys, do you believe the regular season finale between the Cowboys and the Giants will be for the division?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

How can you say a team that's 3-3 has a soft schedule. This team hasn't put a string of wins together. It can't take any team for granted. This team can beat any team or lose to any team except St. Louis.

Brandon (Washington D.C.)

Any word if Bruce Carter will be getting any rotation on the D?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

I'd think special teams first. Then the defense.

James (ATL)

U must not see that brutual schedule the Giants have these next upcoming weeks for you to say the Giants will when the division

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

I said the Giants play more consistently than the other teams in the division. Competition doesn't change that.

raul (rio grande city)

can u imagine the 'Boys having a Jared Allen on the other side of Ware?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

nope. I can't see him playing DE in the 3-4

Dylan Shore (Miami)

What are the odds the Bruce Carter makes any impact this year other than on special teams. The aging Bradie James and Keith Brooking have surely lost a step and more sooner than later this is going to catch up to the defense. How big of a concern is the knee and is Carter the real deal.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

I really can't say because I haven't seen him participate in one play on the field. He's been hurt since he arrived. we'll just have to wait and see

Pro Football Chalk (Dallas)

Do you think Dez Bryant will become an elite receiver this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

Nope, he's still learning the nuances of the game. He will continue to be a difference-maker

Marty B (TX)

So why is it that me and my fellow tight end John Phillips have hardly been used in the pass game and just in pass/run protection. At this pace i might as well change over to guard.

Joel (College Station)

Why haven't Martellus Bennett or John Phillips gotten alot looks in the pass game even when Miles and Dez were out with injury. Marty B is 6'-7" at 270lbs he would cause mismatches with anyone trying to cover him. Do you think its has to do with coach's trust in him or needing him at the line of scrimmage to block.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

Because Bennett seems to drop half the passes directed his way, and Phillips is not a true receiving threat

James (ATL)

Ok playing more consitantly don't mean they'll win the division I mean they haven't been all that GREAT neither themselves & they haven't really played anyone YET

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

I'm not trying to persuade you that I'm right. That's my opinion. We'll find out in 2 months whether I was right or wrong

Jay (San Antonio)

i think deep inside you know the cowboys will win the division... pride is before a crash lol... just kidding... im trying to get into baseball, however i dont understand on the last play last night, the ball hit the cathers knee i think, why did the batter for st louis have to run the?? please enlighten for i am new

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

You gotta catch strike 3. If not, you have to tag the hitter or throw to the base.

Rick (GA)

Dude, quit busting my bubble. I'm trying to find something to get excited about but you keep finding a reason to temper my enthusiasm. Look, I'm not fanatical enough to think that the Boys will win the SB this year but just tell me there going in the right direction.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

Sorry bruh, I deal in reality

Mike (@ Work)

Over/Under on amount of plays the Cowboys play with 10 players?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

2. take the under

Cliff (Rockwall)

I think it's time to let Martellus Bennett go on down the road...he doesn't seem to be making any progress or making a difference...what are your thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

probably, but let's see how the season plays out. Too many folks want answers today. But things can change. What if, hypothetically, Witten suffered a season-ending injury and Bennett caught 37 passes for 498 yards and 4 TDs in the final 10 games. We might all have a different perspective.

Chris (Dallas)

with the NL home games coming up...do you see Napoli batting at eighth? seems like a prime intentional walking position being right before the pitcher

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

Nope. In Busch, he'll probably move back to 7th. Besides, Moreland probably won't be playing. Young will be at 1B

John (Charlotte)

You just a flat out HATER man admit it

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

The fact you don't like my answer doesn't make me a hater. It makes you a fan who looks through a different prism

Andrew (tx) [via mobile]

The Texans won their game by running the ball to kill the clock, yet when Boys tried that against Pats they were criticized, what was diff?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

Foster is better than any RB on the Cowboys' roster

JOhn Gold (Salt Lake City )

Cowboys committed to the run over the next few years (build stronger o-line) to take pressure off of Romo or will they always be pass happy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

They committed to the run because the rams couldn't stop Murray. we can't remember the last time a Garrett running back had 25 carries. I'm going to have to look it up

Ben (ATL)

Who wins the battle between Eagles secondary and Cowboys' receiving corps on Sunday?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

I'll go with the Cowboys. Dez, Miles and Witten is hard to stop.

Josh (Connecticut)

The Cowboys have a softer schedule coming up. Do you believe they can pull out 10 wins this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

Nope. Too inconsistent.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

gotta go. time to pack for St. Louis. See you next Tuesday. Haters are invited too...lol
