Chat with Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:02 PM)

Good morning, my it's already a crowded room. Wonder why. COuld it be that there were a few injuries this week? And by a few, I mean double digits...Ugh. Let's get started.

Derek (NJ)

First? Is Andre Johnson's injury going to linger leading to numerous questionable gametime decisions? Love the work. Thank you.

Stephania Bell
  (3:04 PM)

Derek: Congrats on being the first one to post. I think we could be faced with a gtd decision this week, but we need to see first if Johnson can get back on the practice field. I'm cautiously optimistic he plays Sunday. And the key here is waiting til he feels fully healthy so that there aren't setbacks. Once he's back healthy, should be good to go.

adam (beaverton)

Hows ingrams ankle, does P Thomas overtake him in the starting role?

Stephania Bell
  (3:05 PM)

Adam" Bruised heel is the term they used. They have said nothing more and left his status at uncertain. It could certainly be a week where Thomas is leaned on more and may well be the feature back if Ingram sits.

Andrew K (New Jersey)

What are the odds that Jahvid Best plays this week? Which Redskin running back is the right one to play this week? Helu or Torain?

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

Andrew: Don't think Best plays. Schwartz still calling him day-to-day but there really isn't any major update on what his symptoms are, how he's progressing. They say they will put him on the injury report Weds - but no kidding, they have to. Lions have a bye in Week 9. Just don't see it. As for the Redskins, you should KNOW they never have a true feature back with Shanahan. And if last week is any indication, it was Helu with the bulk of the snaps.

DK (Wakefield RI)

Any info on Beanie Wells? It can't just be a bruise.

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

DK: And actually, Wells denied it was a bruise. Supposedly he says there is a lot of swelling. Makes you wonder if he was hit on the front of the knee and the bursa swelled a lot (they could get away with saying no structural damage but he could have swelling) or could just be that this is a knee with some "stuff" (after all, it is the knee he had surgery on last year) and inside the joint, something happened to irritate it and he's getting swelling of the fluid inside. Either way, lot of swelling = no running. In the past when we've seen this with him, it also meant no playing Sunday.

Nate (NY)

Whats the word on brandon jacobs is he going to be able to play this week ?

Stephania Bell
  (3:12 PM)

Nate: Hopefully say the Giants. He returned to Monday practice - first time in forever, indicating swelling down enough for them to let him do so. If knee behaves OK (and he's wearing a brace to help protect it), then yes.

Tim (AZ)

Can Auto-update get turned on? Also- If Best doesn't play, who do you like behind him- Morris or Williams?

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Tim: It is on. And Morris. Although Williams will get work again.

Rick (La)

Is Gates in the clear? He's available in my league, would I be crazy to drop Finley for him?

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Rick: You have Finley. I would not drop a healthy Finley for what will be a week-to-week Gates. Gates did come out of the game no worse (he said "normal soreness, not worse pain" -point is he didn't say "great") so the problem did not go away just because he played. It will be an ongoing management issue and the Chargers just hope he can play through it.

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Folks: The auto-update is on and has been on since the start!! Thanks.

kyle (seattle)

thanks for your fantasy help!! tell me about addai status this week.

Stephania Bell
  (3:16 PM)

kyle: Not looking good, considering he aggravated the hamstring early in the game Sunday and never reappeared.

Shozy (Yankton SD)

What's your view on the Blount injury? I'm not hearing much information.

Stephania Bell
  (3:18 PM)

Shozy: No one is. They have been mum on it other than "knee sprain." Reports today saying the team hopes to have him after the bye (so Wk 9) but it will be tough to truly gauge anything until they return to practice next week.

Al (Chicago)

What's the word on Hillis?

Stephania Bell
  (3:20 PM)

Al: Sounds like he ran Monday and they're calling him day-to-day. Better outlook for this week but naturally need to see him in practice to have any better hint as to whether he's ready.

Steve (Florida)

Any news on the recent injuries of Mike Tolbert hand and hamstring injury? is it serious?

Stephania Bell
  (3:22 PM)

Steve: Tolbert is apparently fine - at least they're saying the hamstring is just "sore" and the hand not a big deal. So sounds not serious.

Brian (Lincoln)

Any early word on Run DMC?

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

Brian: mid-foot sprain and he's on crutches - but that's to be expected with that injury. They have a bye this week, plan is to rest/treat it and then re-evaluate next Monday. They sound hopeful that he can return next week.

Ryan (Seattle)

Auto-Update may not be on, but I just so happen to be patient enough to refresh my browser. Does Percy Harvin miss any time due to his ribs?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

Ryan: As far as the auto-update, I have selected it twice and it shows it's on on my not sure why it's not working. But please continue to hit refresh...And for Harvin, well, it's possible. He keeps re-injuring his ribs and this has been around since the preseason. So he was sent for an MRI. No results yet but it sounds like it's not improving and you have to wonder if they're going to take him out for a bit.

Mark (San Jose)

Stephania what week do you see Seabass returning to the Raiders? Right after the break or will it take a few more weeks?

Stephania Bell
  (3:27 PM)

Mark: Looks like Week 9. Raiders already waived the kicker they signed (Rayner) so looks like they expect to have Janikowski back.

Brent (California)

So Lynch killed my hopes of a win. Any idea when he will be back, no pun intended. Thanks for all your advice.

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Brent: haha...although I'm sure you and all the other fantasy owners who lost because of him aren't laughing. No idea at this point, especially since Pete Carroll just revealed that he has had this for a while. Not sure entirely what we're dealing with but an ongoing back problem does not usually go away quickly.

Ray (Texas)

Hi Stephania, any word on Chris Ivory?

Stephania Bell
  (3:30 PM)

Ray: They may start working him into practice soon. The plan has been to get him back over the next few weeks, may need him slightly sooner (assuming he responds well), depending on Ingram.

Anthony (San Mateo, CA)

What is the status on McGahee return? Should I take a chance with the dreaded No-Show?

Stephania Bell
  (3:31 PM)

Anthony: Certainly Moreno makes you nervous. But he does default to the primary back with the injury to McGahee. They're saying he'd like to be back in 2 weeks but that sounds early to me. I'm thinking a little longer - not only to have more bone healing but will need to have it wrapped to protect it, yet still needs to be able to handle the ball properly.

Matt (CA)

Hey Starphania... Love ur chats! Will Bradford play this week or would you pick up Ponder or Beck while Rodgers is on his bye? Thanks sister!!!

Stephania Bell
  (3:32 PM)

Matt: Thank you...Bradford still very much an unknown and he's still in the walking boot. I've got to believe given their situation there is no reason to rush him back and risk his overall health. I'd pick up Ponder as insurance.

Hey Stephania, any news on Hines Ward. If he's limited do you expect more targets for Antonio Brown?

Stephania Bell
  (3:33 PM)

Andrew: Possible Ward could sit this week out or at least see a lot less action. More for Antonio Brown.

Jason (Boston)

Thoughts on Braylon Edwards this weekend and going forward?

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Jason: Hard to get super excited out of the gate, not knowing what to expect for a guy who's been on the sidelines for the next month. However, they do play Cleveland and he might just be motivated to do really well. But I think as he gets integrated into the system, he'll end up being a regular target for Smith.

Ryan (CT)

Is Julio Jones going to be available in Week 9? How serious is his hammy?

Stephania Bell
  (3:37 PM)

Ryan: Jones said last week he wasn't sure if he'd be available after the bye week but he did start doing some more activity late last week. The team is hoping he'll be able to make it back but until they get back to practice next week no way to know for sure.

Jim, ATC (Cincy)

Stephania I write a injury post each week on my leagues message board and use your reports as a source for the most recent injury info. This week I have plenty to write about but want to know should I focus on the knee or the ankle for Stafford? Which could have more of an impact in your opinion?

Stephania Bell
  (3:40 PM)

Hi Jim: And thanks. The team is saying the ankle but you have to wonder at least a little about his knee given that he's had issues with it in the past. He is in a walking boot though so supports the ankle theory. Also heard Stafford was perhaps getting a second opinion so don't think it's all settled on him. In any event, Detroit very secretive about injuries and other than saying "ankle" they have said nothing else about the nature of the ailments.

Jamie (ATL)

I know concussions are hard to judge, but any word on Ben Watson and Massaquoi? Little and Evan Moore would seem to be good plays this coming week... your thoughts? Thanks.

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Jamie: They are. And Cleveland calling both day-to-day, as you'd expect, since literally their symptoms can change on a daily basis. I think it's reasonable to plan for both backups, just in case.

Kregg Lumpkin (Tampa Bay)

Do I have a legit chance of being legit?

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

Maybe. There's no one else right now. But there will likely be someone else soon.

Matty (Harrisburg)

Is Moss droppable at this point--how quick would he return to form after being cleared to play (i.e. will he be playable when he does return)?

Stephania Bell
  (3:44 PM)

Matty: I'd drop and get someone who can help me now. They say 5-7 weeks but no one's likely to pick him up - and you'll get a clue well in advance of his returning to playing time when he starts getting integrated back into practice (I don't expect that to be for about 4 weeks). And it certainly could take longer if the healing is slowed at all or if he has a lot in the way of pain/stiffness.

Peter (Indiana)

Starphania: What's going on with RMathews? Would a thumb actually keep him out?

Stephania Bell
  (3:45 PM)

Peter: Not sure exactly what happened with his thumb - heard it got caught in a facemask. But he came back into the game after the injury, so hard to imagine it keeps him out this week.

Jerry Seinfeld (NYC)

What's the deal with Matt Ryan's ankle?

Stephania Bell
  (3:47 PM)

Jerry: Nice of you to take time out of your busy schedule...Apparently no major findings on MRI, he's expecting to be back after the bye week.

Tim (Cincinnati)

Hi Stephania! As an A. Bradshaw owner, how concerned should I be with Jacobs return from injury?

Stephania Bell
  (3:48 PM)

Tim: Still think Bradshaw will get plenty of work. Doubt they will lean too heavily on Jacobs if he's back and even when healthy, Bradshaw the favored one.

Scott (DC)

Hi Stephania, I know injuries happen in sports including the NFL, but it has been spreading like wildfire this year. What gives!! DO you ever remember it being this bad?

Stephania Bell
  (3:50 PM)

Scott: I don't. Not sure if it's because there were so many key fantasy players affected in one week - and I certainly don't have those exact injury numbers in a statistical format I can point to, but from an exhaustion standpoint, yes, it feels like that.

Greg (DC)

How'd TO look today? He's classically a fast healer and hard worker, so any thoughts on how soon he could contribute to a team that signs him???

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

Greg: Honestly I did not see the workout since I was working then - but so far I've heard he looked winded, good without his shirt...but really it's hard to tell what his football play will look like. Post-ACL guys often get to the point of looking fantastic in drills, running routes, etc but then in contact situations, they're far more timid, maybe not as fast. So this workout is a chance for him to show he can actually run, cut, etc - but sounds like he's not in football shape and he will be challenged when it comes to real game play.

Jorge (Mexico)

Hola Stephania, how are you? Show Mexico some love! Any news on Stafford, would you play him or go with Romo against a tough matchup with the eagles? Muchas Gracias!

Stephania Bell
  (3:54 PM)

Jorge: Thanks for making it international! But it's just too early for me to say. I wouldn't make that call until Friday after I see what Stafford is able to do this week.

Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Steph! It's my birthday so please answer my question :). Delone Carter is on my waiver wire. Do I pick him up? I have Graham and it looks like he is done, right?

Stephania Bell
  (3:55 PM)

Eddie: Happy Birthday. I'd pick up Carter. Graham is done. Addai is probably out again, at least for another week. So why not?

Jason (Bmore)

Do you think Felix Jones will heal fast enough to be ready for week 9?

Stephania Bell
  (3:58 PM)

Jason: Not convinced. High ankle sprain on a running back (and it looked pretty bad when it happened) is tough to recover from. Think it's closer to 4 weeks, but obviously, like we always say, see what the guy can do in practice (if he practices).

Ash (CA)

More importantly, do you think Murray steals the job from Felix???

Stephania Bell
  (3:58 PM)

Ash: It would be hard for him not to if he keeps up what he's been doing. DOn't think it will be 200 yards every week, but if he continues to run strong, he's the guy.

JB (The Ohio)

Was Sunday a fluke for Plax or should we expect him to produce more for the ROS?

Stephania Bell
  (4:00 PM)

JB: A bit of both. I think the crazy number of TDs is a fluke. But I also think that after being away from football for so long, he is finally starting to feel like a wide receiver again and it's beginning to click for him and Sanchez. So more productive going forward but don't set the bar too high.

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

OK - time's up. Thanks for coming - and there will be more updates all week on all your injured players. Stay healthy!
