Greetings one and all. Let's begin.
what are your feelings on this super conf. ordeal. good idea or bad??
I really do not see the point. How would that conglmeration ever merit an AQ spot?
southern miss will be ranked by the conference championship game, and potentially smu by the time they play houston. if both are ranked and houston blows them out..will that be good enough for an at-large bid
I wish I could tell you, Case. I just don't see how if there are one-loss teams like Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Alabama sitting out there.
If BYU beats TCU on friday, do they deserve an invite to the big 12?
Why would one game merit an invite? And why would BYU want an invite? It made a big deal about going independent and having its own TV network. I just don't see how that all jives with the Big 12's priorities.
If Boise makes it to the national championship game, does that then open up a spot for Houston to jump into a BCS bowl with the non-AQ in the top 12 rule? Or is Boise still filling that first place non-AQ spot in the championship game?
I believe Boise would still fill that slot.
Andrea,Are you surprised by how well Houston has played on defense the last 2 games. ECU scored more against South Carolina,V-Tech and North Carolina. Marshall also was whiped pretty bad. I think Houston is a legit top 15 team this year.
Definitely surprised with the ECU performance. But that is something this team needs week in and week out, some consistency on defense. If the group keeps playing this well, going undefeated is extremely likely.
Everything in conference realignment these days is about money. The students are being thrown under the bus, traditions are disregarded and uncertainty abounds all because of greed. I would love to see my BYU cougars make an announcement that they are staying independent in football and with the WCC in all other sports for the sole reason that they are going to honor the contract they have with the WCC and ESPN and by so doing show that they have integrity. I would love to be part of the Big 12, but not if it blackens our eye in the process. My parents taught me to honor my obligations even if something better presents itself later. What's your take?
Honoring obligations is all well and good, and certainly the moral thing to do. But what if that leaves you on the outside looking in of a system that clearly is heavily skewed toward the haves, and laughs in the face of the have nots. I think you would swallow your morals and go with what gives you the best chance for survival.
Is there a lifetime achievement award given each year to college football players? Who would win, Kellen Moore, Case Kennum, or other?
Well that all depends on your definition of lifetime achievement. Keenum has the ridiculous numbers, but Moore has more wins and a BCS ring. If this is a team game, then you gotta go with Moore. That is no disrespect to Keenum of course.
Andrea, there seems to be a debate among SA football fans this year. With Navy losing 5 consecutive games, and AFA and Army also dropping off midseason, some fans are harking back to the early 2000s and wondering if the SA's can compete at the FBS level year in, year out. I don't buy it myself (heck, Navy's been the unluckiest team on the planet, and the schedule has been brutal) but I want to know if YOU think there any truth to the assertion? And if so, is it something the Big East is keeping an eye on as we continue to play merry-go-round the conference expansion question?
What has happened to Navy has been stunning. I cannot believe all the bad luck that has dropped into its laps this year. But I think it is a stretch to just make that assumption based on a bad season for everyone. Navy has been to 8 straight bowls, but all of a sudden it cannot compete with FBS teams? Air Force has held its own in an FBS conference. I do not think one bad year is making the Big East reconsider. BUT I do think the service academies do need to consider what it would mean for their programs to compete in the Big East, whatever form it takes. The last thing anybody wants to see is a repeat of what happened to Army in C-USA.
Missed your last few chats but now I'm back. As the bowl picture is beginning to emerge it looks like the service academies and quite a few conferences are going to struggle to meet their bowl obligations. Could this be a huge opportunity for the MAC to send 5 or 6 teams bowling? How do you think the MAC will fair?
Ryan, I think it all depends on what other conferences have teams eligible to go bowling beyond their allotment. I think the Big Ten, for example, would get preference over the MAC if it has an extra team. That being said, it does appear this could be a banner year for the MAC. Very impressed with some of the teams that are winning this year, including Eastern and Ball State.
What happened to your UL-L team?
I didn't realize I had a team!
andrea 2 predictions for u this week who wins wyo vs sdsu and tcu vs byu?
San Diego State. BYU ends the misery and wins.
Being a fan of Boise State over the years, I have seen the general perception changing from Boise State can't do it at all to they are good for a one-off game and beat anyone when they have time to prepare and their SOS doesn't allow them to be taken seriously.....What will be next?
That probably all depends on whether it moves conferences.
Please tell us why the "Culture" at BYU is soo bad that the AQ conferences keep passing on BYU!
I would not use the word culture. First, there are some complications with BYUtv, in that BYU wants to have rights to reair all its games and I am not sure if that would fly in the Big 12. Also the not playing on Sunday stipulation is something that could be a stumbling block as well.
Hi Andrea, Thank you for taking my question. If Georgia wins SEC, will Boise State go to National Championship Game?
That all depends on what everybody does around Boise. Broncos need no undefeated teams.
If Boise does make it to the NCG do they have a team that could compete with LSU or Alabama? Or are we looking at another SEC champion.
Steven, I actually think last year's Boise team was stronger than the team this year. That's no disrespect to what the Broncos have going right now. I think Alabama and LSU would beat Boise this season.
Andrea, one stat that is making the rounds on the internet lately is Pat Hill's record against teams with winning records over the years? Did you know Fresno State is 3-27 in its last 30 games against teams with winning records? Hill has made his career on wins over the Idahos, San Jose States, New Mexico States, Utah States and LA Techs of the world. That's why fans are tired of Hill. He talks a much better game than he delivers. People are finally looking at the real numbers. If you had to guess as of right now, does Hill get fired at the end of the year?
So I guess going to 12 bowl games in 14 years is just awful, right? Look, I know you guys are unhappy and maybe his record is not so great recently. You gotta beat winning teams to win championships. I get that But my word, the man has made people talk about Fresno State. Do I think he will still have a job? I honestly have no idea and am not going to even hazard a guess.
What's your take on Nevada? Only losses are on road to Boise, Oregon and Texas Tech. Could finish 9-3 and unbeaten in WAC. Maybe last year was no fluke???
Nevada certainly seems to have gotten its act together. But the WAC is so schizo this year, I am not quite ready to say any team is ready to run the table in that league.
Why are the SEC fans always against Boise State. I mean the winner of the SEC champ is guranteed a spot for the NC. Why does it matter to them who is the other team. If they are the best conference they should just take care of the business on the field.
Who will win the Conference USA East?
I am not wavering on my preseason pick of Southern Miss.
Some cfb analysts are caliming that it will be a re-match of the LSU/Alabama game if there are no unbeaten teams besides Boise State. My question is how can you play for the championship game when you cannot even win your conference and isn't the whole point of a 'championship' to pit the best teams against each other and you will never know how good Boise State until they play at the big stage?
This is going to be a very interesting case study, Tim. Remember in 2006 the talk about whether Michigan and Ohio State should have a rematch for the national championship? I wonder whether voters would actually go for that, or just allow Boise to finally prove it once and for all. I really hope it is the latrer.
Does Boise have the most complete and balanced team in the country? Even if you think LSU and Alabama are better, don't you have to acknowledge that they have a glaring and potentially exploitable weakness (conservative, sometimes stagnant offenses with at times very average QB play). If you don't think they are the most complete team, who do you think is?
Hey when you have a guy like Trent Richardson, it is easy to see why your offensive play calling is sometimes conservative. (And I would never use conservative to describe Les Miles). I have no doubt that Boise is a more dynamic offense in terms of what it likes to do. Boise would have an advantage at quarterback over both teams, no question about it. I just think both Bama and LSU have better defenses. The thought of Kellen vs. the Honey Badger is awesomely intriguing, wouldn't you say?
Why can't the NCAA just step in and say, enough is enough, to all this alignment mess.
The NCAA has no authority.
Boise State to the Big East: Good idea (money, better TV deal, better competition, AQ status) or bad idea (geography, jumping on board the Titanic, other sports go elsewhere, lateral move)?
It really all depends on who is in the Big East after the Big 12 plays itself out, and whether the BE stays as an AQ. Too many unknowns right now.
Andrea, Can you at least attempt to give these guys answers... John in Chicago, the SEC fans (Just LSU/Ala) is upset that they have to play a much tougher schedule and when you may have an off week (like Boise against Air Force) usually the team is good enough to beat you. Boise has one big game a season and calls this taking care of business. It's just our definations of business care is quite different and frankly unfair.
The thing is Kevin, Boise has no control over its conference schedule. Even if it beefed up nonconference and played 4 ranked teams on the road, the Broncos would still be given no credit. Boise wants into an AQ. Boise is not afraid of the competition. But why should a team that goes undefeated be continually penalized for a conference that it does not control. The move to the Mtn West was done to beef up its schedule strength. A move to the BE would presumably do the same. If the Big 12 offered, Boise would jump in a minute. But nobody outside the BE is offering. If you were a Boise fan, don't you think you would be a little peeved at this whole system?
Andrea, you just said on this chat and on previous ones, that Boise needs no undefeated teams. I beg to differ. If there is exactly one undefeated team (not counting Houston) and Boise is 12-0, I think that is your championship game. Given that Boise will play a schedule this year that is somewhere in the 60's in terms of SOS, I would think for a 1-loss team to be ahead of them in the computers they would need to play a top-10 SOS type of schedule. Other than the LSU-Alabama loser, I don't see that happening.
You just answered your own question. If there was an undefeated plus one-loss Bama/LSU, Boise most likely would be out.
Seems like one of the MWC & C-USA's biggest problems is the bottom-dwellers. They're killing the perception of the top teams. In all these discussions of forming conference conglomerations, is there any talk of separating out the bad teams? (I'd love a tiered, relegation-based system, but anything would be an improvement.)
You are right, and there is no discussion about doing that.
Andrea, please pick my question! What are your thoughts of SJSU so far? With Forcier stepping in next yr, can you see the Spartans being successful?
Before the season started, I thought San Jose State would be vastly improved, and I am happy to see that playing out. So many young players are contributing, so that bodes well for the future. But I would not put all my eggs in the Forcier basket. That guy seems to be a bit of a flake. I hope he has got his priorities in order right now.
who in your mind right now is your third best non aq team behing houston and boise?
Houston's strength of schedule is hovering around 110 of 120. Why all the love?
Last I checked, Houston won all its games.
Andrea, if I were a Boise fan, I would be upset at the lack of scheduling top opponents. Yes, the conference is weak and Boise can't control that. But guess what, they have 4 nonconference games to schedule top talent to improve their resume. They choose not to. They schedule 1 "good" team, and then 3 "Tulsa's" or "UC Davis's" etc.
Well Boise also wants to play at least one nonconference game at home. Nobody "good" wants to play in Boise.
Do you think BYU deserves the 9 votes it is receiving in the coaches poll? Look at the Cougars' wins (all of which have come over teams with losing records): a 3-point win over Utah State (which is last in the WAC), a 7-point win over a UCF team that you called one of the most disappointing in the nation, a 1-point win over the worst SEC team (winless Ole Miss), FBS also-ran Idaho State, and then San Jose and Oregon State. Plus BYU was blown out 54-10 at home by a Utah team that is reeling and 0-4 in the Pac-12. How does this merit those 9 votes (and the resulting #34 ranking in the country)?
I want to see BYU beat TCU before I think it is worthy of receiving votes.
You are down 5. 90 seconds left in the game. 70 yards to pay dirt. Who do you want under center. Luck, Kenuum, or Moore?
Brent, this is not a very nice question! I think I am taking Moore because I have seen him do it before against good competition. The guy never flinches, and he is one of the smartest QBs in the game. Obviously I think all 3 are great, but Moore is cool under pressure and I would have faith that he would deliver.
What BCS bowl has to take the non AQ this year?
It is not a matter of a bowl "having" to take a non-AQ. All depends on matchup. This is the order of selection for this year: January 2012 games: Fiesta, Sugar, Orange
Hi Andrea, is there any shot UH gets an invite to the Big 12? If they don't, would it still be worth it for them to move to a possibly depleted Big East? Basketball wise they would still have a good conference
I do not see the Big 12. I think it all depends on what shape the Big East is in after all of this is said and done.
Is this just a random, good year for Eastern Michigan or does Ron English have the Eagles on the right track?
You have got to think that Ron English has this team starting to rebound. He has been there, what, 3 seasons now, long enough for improvement to be seen. Really impressive that it beat both Western and Central this year. Especially Western -- that team was playing lights out, to hold them to 10 is good work.
To anyone suggesting that Boise State's OOC is weak because they're playing all the "Tulsas" of the world?of all the OOC's that Boise State had this year COMBINED, the only loss any of them have to an unranked team is Nevada at Texas Tech and Toledo to Ohio State, who lost by 5 the week before Boise State routed them. The only division loss any of them have is Georgia to South Carolina.
Andrea, Fresno State is KILLING ME! Great interview with Hill, BTW. Think they'll get everything straightened out over the bye and come out strong? They've been getting beaten up the last 8 weeks with no time off to actually recover and analyze changes that need to be made.
That is one point I wanted to make in the article but ran out of space. Hill and Carr both mentioned that the time off would be good for this team. I am going to go out on a limb and say Fresno does become bowl eligible this year. But I have been wrong on Fresno before, as you guys all know!
Boise has always complained that no one wants to give them return games but at the same time they demand the kinds of pay day that a rent-a-victim gets for a money game. Why not approach big schools with this proposal: "We'll come to your place for a modest pay day--if we win we'll give the money back but you have to come and play a game on the Blue Turf." What do you think?
Why would they do that? They need the $$$ They are in the same spot as these "rent-a-victims" because they are in a non-AQ and hence not getting paid with big-time TV $$!
If TCU pulls off an upset and sneaks up on Boise with a win, if that is Boise's only loss, is it enough to knock them out of the top 12? Is it enough to have them jumped by Houston?
Great question. I think the timing of the loss could have a lot to do with that. Last year, Boise did finish in the Top 12 with that loss to Nevada, but TCU was undefeated. Houston still has a ways to go, too.
if wyoming won its next two games @ sdsu and tcu at home how much would it surprise you?
I would be stunned.
Best up and coming coaches in the non-aq ranks?
Toledo coach Tim Beckman has got to be right up there. Mario Cristobal of FIU; Kevin Sumlin of Houston.
Can UCF do anything to salvage this season?
Win out, including bowl game. There still is hope for a conference title, even though it looks really dim right now. Everybody has at least 1 loss in the East.
Since you say Fresno State will become bowl eligible... that means the Bulldogs will not lose more than 1 game the rest of the way. With games at Hawaii, at San Diego State, at New Mexico State, and home vs. Louisiana Tech and San Jose State, that's a mighty prediction on your part. You really believe the Bulldogs will win on the road at either Hawaii or San Diego State?
Hawaii is a tough place to play, no doubt about it, but the Warriors have looked bad at times this year. San Diego State is going to be tougher, but not impossible. Am I 100 percent sure on this prediction? No. But maybe this team will surprise us all.
andrea brad edwards actually seem to think this is boise best year to have a shot at the tittle game what are your thoughts on that?
Well this is the first time Boise has moved UP in the BCS standings. But a lot has to happen for that to come true.
Which Freshman QB do you like better so far this year...Chuckie Keeton of USU or Nick Isham of La Tech?
I think Isham got benched in his last game.
Does East Carolina have a shot to win C-USA East for the third time in four years? They have USM and UCF at home.
Sure there is a shot, especially if Dominique Davis can keep being perfect. What a first half, BTW. I still think Southern Miss is stronger.
The NCAA has no authority on conference alignment (or the BCS). So, why do the schools and conferences abide by their rules regarding recruiting and (non)payment of players? What would stop Miami or another school from just ignoring the NCAA and their attempts at sanctions?
Well, they all agreed to be a part of this association and to abide by these rules. So that's why.
Soooooo....Fresno State will not make a bowl game this year. Write that down
OK. Bet is on.
If Southern Miss can win out, and end up with a top-25 BCS ranking, what bowl do you see them going to?
Would be the Liberty Bowl as C-USA champs, right?
Who is going to win the WAC? Have you had a chance to see Cody Fajardo (sp) play?
I give the edge to Nevada now, especially since the Hawaii game is in Reno. I have seen some of his highlights. He is going to be really good.
Thanks to everyone for joining me today! Hope you enjoy the games this weekend.
