Why are the conference rankings so fickle once conference play starts? Here's where I get confused, if Syracuse beating West Virginia caused West Virginia to drop thus hurting it's ranking, why didn't Syracuse rise an equal amount? Shouldn't West Virginia's fall be equal to Syracuse's rise?
Dave, there is no mathematical formula that says Team X should move up X spots and team Y should move down Y spots depending on who wins and loses. I take the entire body of work and then go from there, with extra weight on what the team has done lately. That is why USF is ranked No. 8. How on earth the Bulls lost to UConn is beyond me. Syracuse is No. 2 is that not enough of a move for you?
Which USF receivers do you see stepping up with Sterling Griffin out? Could Andre Davis have a big impact after his big game against Cincinatti?
If I had to pick, I would go with Andre Davis and Deonte Welch. Both did some really nice things last week against Cincinnati, and coaches cannot talk enough about all the talent Davis has. He is just young and still learning, but I think he has the potential to be one of the best WR in this league.
Andrea, do you think the ACC will have second thoughts about Pitt after the attendance last night? Also if West Virginia does not get into the Big 12 do they have other options? The way I look at it, all of us remaining football playing schools have to do whatever it takes to get into a BCS conference. Good luck to all!
That attendance was pretty bad, but there are no second thoughts. Pitt is in. And I want to say it is Big 12 or bust for WVU.
Texas has its own TV channel and today I saw news that Oklahoma was considering the same option rather than push for a Big12 TV network. This sounds like a potentially very bad situation for WVU, UL, or whoever?s congressman gets them into the Big12 next. Any idea how the $ would be split between the big 2 and the little 8?
Well right now I believe they have agreed to split some of the revenues evenly based on a condition, but there are different "tiers" that allow schools to keep some revenues to themselves.http://www.aggiesports.com/football/Big-12-presidents-approve-revenue-sharing--6695208
Hola Andrea, its always sad to see someone get hurt, especially when they're as good as Graham, hope he can make a full recovery. Anyways, my question is - in light the video by the WV sentaor, do you think that WVU will end up in the B12 no matter what?
Yes I agree, it was very sad to see that happen to him. He is a good kid, too. I really have no idea how the Big 12 is going to play out. I thought it was a lock the other night, and now it's not. This thing seems to change by the minute so I just am not in the right spot to sit here and make a guess. Because there are no educated guesses here, the way this story changes.
Let's say the Bearcats win the league and go to their 3rd BCS game in 4 years. Why does it seem like their success isn't making them any more desirable to another conference in all this realignment conversation?
If it was all about success, then explain Pitt/Syracuse getting into the ACC. That is not a knock on them, but merely showing that going to BCS games is not exactly the main area that teams are being judged on during realignment.
Andrea: Seems like we are getting closer to my idea of eight superconferences based upon region of the country. Why not just do it now and stop the conference roulette?
Eight? More like 4 with the top 64.
Louisville versus WVU at Morgantown on Nov. 5th. Deathmatch?
Winner gets auto bid to the Big 12?
Given all of the conference realignment crap, and the absolute beatdown by Syracuse, would you describe this game against Rutgers Holgorsen's first real test on how to respond to adversity?
I think he had to get his team to respond after losing to LSU, against a team that does not exactly inspire (Bowling Green). But certainly there is more on the line in this one because it is going to make it that much harder to win the conference with 2 losses. Of course it's been done before, but it's not the ideal position to be in.
Do you think if WVU moves to the B12, that the BE can still retain it's AQ status with the remainder teams in addition to the speculated teams to join? I felt like WVU was the BE's last and only hope at retaining AQ, do you think getting in on the merger w/ CUSA & MWC is the best option for the future now?
I am fairly confident that merger is not going to happen. But I have no idea whether the Big East retains AQ, with or without West Virginia. BCS director Bill Hancock will tell you the same, so it is really hard to guess right now. The honest answer is that there is no answer.
Hey Andrea, do you think the BE will be able to attract teams if WVU and/or Louisville leave?
The BE is holding meeting with AFA and Boise with all this Big 12 stuff going on, Houston and UCF have meetings of their respective boards planned to discuss realignment, so my answer would have to be yes.
What are key matchups to watch this weekend in the Syracuse/Louisville game?
RT Ryan Kessling vs. DE Chandler Jones. Jones had a huge game last week in his return after a knee injury with 2 sacks. Louisville had a good game protecting Teddy Bridgewater, but the Cardinals have to keep it up. Also Louisville run game vs. Syracuse front, and Nick Provo against Louisville LBs.
Now that Graham is done.. Is Pitt done?
Great question. Pitt has to win 2 of 4 just to get bowl eligible with games left vs. UC, at UofL, at WVU and Syracuse. It is hard to see 2 wins in that group without Graham.
Is there any hope for me to have with this Huskies team? The offensive line is swiss cheese, the defense has holes as big as craters on the moon and bigfoot is easier to find than UConn's offense. Should I just give up on this year and hope next year will be better with some of Coach P's recruits in the the system or should I start hoping that when the new AD arrives at UConn he wants to make his mark by hiring a new head football coach?
Jesse, Coach P has had 7 games, I would say give the guy a break. He came in without a starting QB or starting RB, and lost some big-time players on defense. Blidi Wreh-Wilson clearly has shown how valuable he is to that D. I think you need to give PP some more time, but I do not have great hopes for a bowl. I haven't for a while now.
Seems like the Big East is still very much focused on Basketball with Pitino lobbying to get Temple and Memphis. Your thoughts?
Of course Rick Pitino is going to lobby on behalf of basketball, but the BE has got to focus on making this a football conference first.
I know Ray Graham is irreplaceable but can Pitt "make do" in his absence with Zach Brown and others for the rest of the season. Also do you see Ray Graham coming back to Pitt next year due to this injury?
Zach is good, but he is not Ray Graham. Losing Cameron Saddler is going to hurt, too, along with Rotheram. I am not sure what type of injury Graham has, but I would have to think he would be back -- that is just a guess.
Could the Big 12 be testing WVU's loyalty to see if they try for the SEC again during this "holding period"?
Umm. No. SEC is not an option.
AT least not at 4:18 p.m. Thursday!
Could you explain Notre Dame's steadfast insistence on remaining independent in Football? I truly believe that Notre Dame would have greatly benefitted by playing Big East football - they would have probably gone to 5 or 6 BSC games, and probably a National Championship or two, playing the "easier" schedule. They use the academics argument about joining, yet they reaped the benefits of being able to compete in all other Big East sports. I'm a WVU grad, and sick about what is going on right now. A conference with Notre Dame anchoring it would never lose their BSC bid, and the tv contract that would be generated by a conference with ND in it would far surpass the contract that an irrelevant ND can get from NBC or whomever else comes calling when their current contract runs out. I think right now, this minute, if ND and the service academies were to join the Big East, the rest of the remaining members would stay and their BSC bid would be assured. Why Notre Dame...why? If you want to continue playing Michigan, USC and Stanford, then schedule them as your non-conference opponents.
Notre Dame likes having its own TV contract so it can keep all that $$ for itself; likes being able to schedule whomever it wants. I mean shoot, ND has its own arrangement for getting into the BCS! So why would you give that up to be tethered to a conference that gets no national respect. Why should ND sacrifice what it believes in to save a league that clearly has no idea what it wants to be? Just taking the opposite position for you.
Can you explain why USF brings either the best or 2nd best team in the league every year, wins big non conference games to help the Big East's resume...and then lays an egg in conference against inferior opponents in half empty stadiums on the road? And it happens every year. I don't get it.
I wish I had an answer for you, Joe. Because if there was one, then this would not be happening year after year after year. I think the easy nonconference games give a false sense of security maybe. Or maybe these teams just aren't tough enough. I cannot recall anybody ever describing USF as a "physical" team. Correct me if I am wrong there.
Is it justified that some ACC fans prefer their team to be in the Chick Fil A bowl vs. SEC rather than "getting stuck" with the Big East champion in the Orange Bowl this year?
Why would that ever be justified when your school would be losing millions of $$ in BCS cash?
What if 'Cuse got Marcus sales back in two weeks? How great would that be for Nassib to have another weapon in the run for the BEast championship!
I really have no idea how long the university process takes for him to be reinstated. I am not going to hazard a guess at what Doug Marrone is going to do, but you also have to wonder what type of shape he is in, and whether he would be able to just set foot in a game and make an immediate impact. I would say Dorian Graham has filled in quite well.
If Chan Jones keeps up the tempo, does he move into talks for defensive player of the year?
Missing 5 games really is going to hurt. But if he is a beast in conference play then maybe. Nobody is really running away with it on offense or defense this year.
Tino seems only to come to play at night. He should be called tino sunset sunseri.
Bravo, pittpanther. I wish I had thought of that first.
Hmm, four conferences with 16 teams each. Two eight-team divisions per conference. Top team in each division plays conference title game. Four winners go into a playoff for the National Championship. You know, I like this but I'm thinking the FCS won't being that it will be HUGE!
Well the thought is that there would be another division filled with the non-AQs.
Hey Andrea, do you remember when schools stayed in their conferences?
No. Because since conferences were formed, there always has been movement.
How long do you think Stedman Bailey can keep up his 100 yd receiving game streak? Do you agree that Bailey, and not Tavon Austin, has been the best WR for WVU? And should he be considered for breakout player of the year?
Absolutely I agree. I remember in July when I was doing my impact player videos, I stayed away from Bailey because I thought he was already a household name. But I was wrong on that. He now is a big name in the Big East and to me the No. 2 WR in the league behind Sanu. I have no idea how long the streak will go, but he has been the most reliable, consistent WR for WVU, hands down.
Hey Andrea, I'm really enjoying the blog. How do you think the result of the Rutgers-West Virginia game will shape the Big East this season?
Thanks. I think the winner will be right there competing for the conference championship, especially since both have Cincinnati left to play. It really is a huge game for conference hopes.
Whats your thoughts on Isaiah Pead winning the Doak Walker award seeing that Graham is out, Lamichael james has been dealing with injuries and Richardson has some more tough games against SEC teams who will be gunning at him
Definitely think it is Trent Richardson's to lose. I don't even know if Pead will be a finalst for that award.
Hey Andrea,In 2006 the Empire State Building was lit up in red, the NY Yankees honored Rutgers with a special message on the stadium, and Rutgers owns almost all of the Top 5 college games played on TV in the NYC area. Not to mention thousands of working alumns in the area watching the Scarlet Knights closely. They had more then twice the amount of viewers on ESPN2 vs. 'Ville then 'Cuse vs. WVU on ESPN! I was happy to see published reports around the country regarding this, but when will everyone finally realize the Rutgers is new York City's team!? They need to open their ears and hear the RU chatter on the streets....
The only thing I hear on the streets of New York are cabs honking. Someone explain to me why it is so important to be recognized as the team of NYC? I mean I thought the team of NYC was the YANKEES?
Actually I was referring to the Conference Power Rankings and how the Big East dropped after Syracuse beat West Virginia, or so we were told. Shouldn't those numbers be the same.
Oh I am sorry, Dave. I misunderstood. I think those are more of a measure of the conference's strength at the top as opposed to overall strength. So a ranked WV team losing meant the BE took a hit.
Couldnt you argue shortsightedness on the part of UofL and WVU in this conf. mess? They keep talking about being in a stable league but if they committed to the Big East it would be more stable than the B12
It would be, but it probably would not be as profitable and certainly would not have the national respect the Big 12 gets with Texas and Oklahoma.
Hey Andrea, care to remind everyone where you had the Bearcats in your preseason rankings...How do you like ur crow?? grilled, blackened, or maybe fried???
Win the rest of your games and then talk to me. By the way, the Rutgers fans have already given me a crow recipe so I am prepared.
Andrea, can you also remind Brian that during the Big East tournament that the Empire State Building has been painted Orange?
Okay, Andrea, (toy) gun to your head, what gives first - Louisville's defense or Syracuse's defense?P.S. What are you going to be for Halloween?
I am going to go with Louisville. Halloween ... my 3 year old asked me what I was going to be and I said I had no idea. She said I needed to be Disney Princess Ariel because we both have red hair. She is going as Cinderella, of course. So if you are in Orlando and see us making the rounds, please no heckling!
I think the Big East knows exactly what kind of league it wants to be, the best basketball league in the country whose football playing schools are just good enough to allow it to retain its BCS AQ $$$. The problem is those football schools, ironically Pitt and Syracuse being the biggest examples, failed to succeed enough on the football field. Nobody over than WV has been a regular in the BCS standings.
Well I am not sure it will be the best basketball league in the country without Pitt and Syracuse. I still cannot imagine the BE tourney without Orange. So I guess it should have worried about football more to still be considered the best basketball league.
Do you think the Rutgers-WVU game will come down to which mediocre running game comes out on top?
No. Who can cover Bailey/Austin and Sanu the best. Both teams have won without their run games doing much.
And who can get the best pressure on the QB, too.
So we have to go 11-1 for you to admit you and the rest of the world outside the 513 was wrong??? Wow, guess We Gotta Get All The Dubs...
Well what if you guys finish 6-6 or 7-5? I mean come on, there is a lot of season left!
After last week, seems like there's a lot of question about WV offense but shouldn't the defense be the one taking a hit. Syracuse and 49 points! There's no way those two things go together.
Oh absolutely. People have been talking all week about the defense. Special teams was bad, too. I am still trying to figure out whether West Virginia knew it was allowed to tackle in that game.
Watched that brutal game last night. Johnny McEntee should spend more time on footwork and less time on trick shot passing videos...
Goes to show you how hard it is to play in an actual game. It is all well and good to throw a football into a garbage can from 90 yards but hit a receiver 50 yards down the field with a pass rush in your face while trying to read the defense and good luck.
Over/under how many sacks will Scott Shaffer's attacking D get on the ville?
I honestly thought Rutgers would do a number on the ville last week but they got no sacks. So I am going to say ... between 2-4. Louisville played much better on the line last week.
Never mind coaches, do you think John Marinatto is on the hot seat as BE commish? Not all of it is his fault, but he didn't exactly show great leadership nor timing on this whole issue.
If he was on the hot seat, the he would not be out there selling the Big East to new schools. They would have gotten somebody else in to reconfigure this conference. Just my take.
Who will break....WVU offense or Rutgers D....water gun to your head...
Danny, why are you in the car all day? Going with Rutgers D.
Speaking of Rutgers...Savon Huggins is NOT looking impressive. Do you see any potential here? or was this a case of an over-hyped recruit just because he is a Jersey Boy?
I really do think he is trying too hard. Coaches love what they see of him in practice, but keep saying he is not being patient in reading the holes and just wants to hit a home run every time. So I think he needs to settle in, relax and just let the game flow and not think about busting a 30 yard gain on every play.
So what are Rutgers chances beating WVU this weekend? I beleive iit will be a game of Rutgers (Off.) vs. WVU(Def.) .The other way around can go either way.
Well after last week, I am never going to say never. I would say 30 percent.
Hey Andrea, the WVU at RUTGERS game is being described as a MUST win for both squads. Which team is more "desperate" for the win, what are the keys to victory, and your final score?
Not to be a jerk, Brian, but I have all this in the blog today. You can check there for the score and game of the week video with my key to watch. I think WVU is more desperate for the win because this is the preseason favorite, and the only ranked team in the BE. A loss here and it will be tough to win the title.
I cannot remember the last time that Jeff Casteel was so outclassed in a game. Do you think it was a failure to adapt to what Cuse was doing? Or was it more a failure on the players to execute?
Seemed to be a little bit of both to me. I really cannot understand how they never really figured out the TE was a big part of the game plan. But also Julian Miller admitted to me they were "out-physicaled and out-toughed." How can you blame that on Casteel? The players are the ones who have to go out and set that physical tone. They can't allow themselves to be pushed around and that is exactly what happened. Almost like they expected to roll their helmets onto the field and win without trying.
Do you think Geno needs to tuck it and run a little more? I noticed against SU he hadf a couple chances to get 1st down and elected to throw. He was already a tackling dummy, might as well get yards....
I am not sure in those instances whether he would have gained big chunks of yards, anyway. Almost seemed like Syracuse was playing with 15 guys on the field because they were everywhere. I know the coaches have told Geno not to run it as much this year. They really want to focus on him staying in the pocket.
AA, I want to pass along a waredrobe suggestion. Stop wearing black tops when you create your video clips. The black chair blends in with your outfit and makes it look like you have huge humped shoulders. You do a great job on the blog, may as well look good doing it! Thanks for the good work.
I've been called out by the FASHION POLICE!!!!! Seriously, Randy. You are right. We all have been told not to wear black. I hope you have noticed there has been no black this week!
what is a more program defining win: SU crushing WV last wk or TX Tech upsetting OU?
I think program-defining has to include what you do with that win. Just a stand alone win is all well and good, but if you cannot back it up, then it is not program defining.
I think as long as TE(K) doesn't miss feild goals RU has a chance.
Wow, what has gotten into him lately? Major slump.
The odds for SU-UL are in UL's favor, what's your opinion?
Yes I saw that and was a little surprised that UofL was favored. Of course I was surprised last week and UofL won. I just think it probably has to do with playing at home and its 2-game winning streak over Syracuse.
Think USF or Cincy will be sending Christmas cards to BE's "leaders" in Providence anytime soon? Those are the two schools I feel most sorry for in this whole realignment mess, as (it seems) nobody is courting them. If (a) they're the only two schools left standing in this game of musical chairs, and (b) the BE loses AQ status, they stand to lose tens of $million$ every year in CFB revenue.
Yes they do. I feel bad for any school that is going to get left out in any of this mess as we inch toward superconferences. This is yet another reason why the BCS is so inherently unfair. A few guys just decide who is a "have" and who is a "have not" and then so sorry you are not in our club and you cannot get millions of dollars that we feel Team X deserves for having done nothing special. OK I am off the high horse.
You were like 5, right, when Rutgers last beat WVU in football....
Now you are a smart young man, Andy. So smart.
What is the chance of syracuse making a bcs bowl?
AT this point, it is too hard to tell. I know I sound like a broken record here, but I want to see how this team plays Saturday before I start thinking the odds are better than average.
Do you think that if Boise goes to the BE that there are any teams there that could give them a run for thier money? I don't see it happening.
Are we talking a BE with or without WVU and UofL? Either way I think the league will be set up for Boise to be able to win, especially with the potential additions of Air Force, Navy, UCF, SMU and Houston.
Do think Oliver Luck was eating crow this week after disrespecting Syracuse? How embarrassed was he after that game?
Maybe not embarassed, but probably regretting what he said during that TV broadcast. He had to have known that he would be looking for a way out when he said that.
Why would SMU and Houston and Boise even consider moving to the BE. Stay where you are in the "new" super USA conf and they will get the BE AQ bid in 2 years. Then they could "steal" S Florida and who ever is left.
Well I don't know how good the chances are for super CUSA/MWC to get an AQ bid even if it hangs onto everybody. Remember, all these schools stand to gain millions upon millions of dollars in TV revenue that they do not get in their current conferences because the Big East is going to renegotiate its TV deal. So if all things are equal and you are going to be in a non-AQ anyway, why not go where there is more $$?
If Syracuse or Pitt comes in and dominates the way Virginia Tech did after leaving the Big East, would you say the Big East is the stronger conference? or "was" ?
They would be members of the ACC so how does that make the Big East strong? Because those 2 teams did not dominate during their time in the league? I do not think people would view it that way. They probably would view it as ... poor Big East look what could have been had they hung on to Syr, Pitt, VT, Miami and BC.
Why do you think that Cincy fans are so confident right now. Sure they are 2-0 and in first place but the top 3 teams in the league besides Cincy are WVU Syracuse and Rutgers. And they havent played any of them. Two of them on the road.
Well they are 6-1 and 2-0 so they have a right to feel confident. I am sure you would if your team was atop the BE with an undefeated record. But yes, Cincinnati has a really tough schedule ahead and let's not forget the Bearcats had to come back and win both league games.
Uggh. Almost missed the chat! I'm hearing reports that ND is being heavily recruited by Texas to move their non football sports to the Big12. Rumors or accurate? This is terrible news for me. I could at least travel to a few Big East schools to watch them play. There's no way I can make a cross country trip if they change allegiances.
That is all just speculation right now. ND's first preference is to stay in the Big East but would have to weigh its options if it appears the league cannot survive. Given the courting going on right now, I think the BE will be able to survive. But that is today at 5 p.m.!
OK everyone thanks for joining me today! Enjoy the games Saturday.
