Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the boxing chat. Big notebook and blog should be posted shortly, the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV numbers are out today and we have a ton of stuff coming up even if this is a slow weekend, so let's get to it.

Charles ((DFW))

Love the proposed Rios-Gamboa fight. My question is are you concerned about the size disadvantage, considering Gamboa is barely moving up to 130 and Rios could easily fight and win at 140 right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

There is always a concern, but Gamboa started his career at 130 and moved down to 126. So there is a concern, but I know I want to see it.

Kevin (A Greyhound Bus)

Why is Bob Arum trashing Mayweather newsworthy. That happens like everyday.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Slow news day I guess.

matt (canada)

can you give us a breakdown of who gets the 78m?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

You are talking about the gross for the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV. About half goes to the cable distributors, so lop off 39 million from the $78 million PPV gross. Mayweather got his guarantee from Golden Boy on the night of the fight, as I recall $25 million. Ortiz's side got its guarantee, which was about $2.5 million. The rest of the roughly 11.5 million went to pay all expenses on the show (including the undercard, marketing, media tour, insurance, etc...). HBO PPV takes its roughly 7% cut also. Golden Boy gets paid as well whatever its fee was plus whatever upside it may have had. Then the rest would go to Mayweather and a smaller percentage to Ortiz depending on what his upside was in his contract. Keep in mind, there was other revenue also that went into the pot -- the closed circuit money (including the movie theaters), the money HBO paid for the delayed broadcast rights, the money from television sales outside the US, the $9 million or so from the live gate (ticket sales to the arena), millions from sponsors and merchandise (T-shirts, programs, posters etc...). Floyd made tons of cash.

Frank (Essex)

Hi Dan, have you heard anything on the grapevine about why Frankie Gavin pulled out of his bout tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I have no heard anything specific other than some sort of personal issue. Really don't know but it is too bad.

Justin (Seattle)

How many people tweeted you with a WBC, Game 7 and sanctioning fee joke immediately after the game last night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Several. What a fantastic game!

GoldenBoy (PA)

The JR Welterweight division has pretty good talent, That kid Danny Swift Garcia looks pretty good. What do you think would be a good next step for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

He got an excellent win against Holt on the Hopkins-Dawson undercard. The win moved him up to No. 1 in one organization and No. 2 in another. I think he is ready for an HBO opening fight against another good contender and then possible some sort of title shot.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Major props to Gamboa for attempting to get a fight Rios next year, especially considering Gamboa will be a relatively small lightweight, and Rios is a big 135lber

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Agreed.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Game 6 was probably the most exciting sporting event I've seen since Corrales-Castillo I.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I Tweeted that and wrote that in my blog today.

Buck (Denver)

Have you heard anything about what Top Rank is gonna do with Mike Alvarado?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

He is on the Pacquiao-Marquez PPV card in two weeks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

He is on the Pacquiao-Marquez PPV card in two weeks.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Prediction for Marquez-Concepcion II tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Pain.

Txong Yang (Boston)

Boxing needs to be taken off of the Espn first take subjects. They are clueless about the sport of boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

It is painful to watch sometimes, I agree.

Wilkie (Toronto)

Tagline for Ortiz's new chain of taco restaurants: The best Tacos in LA, HANDS DOWN!

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Micah (PHX)

Thoughts on first 24/7 epsisode Pacquiao Marquez and Manny's Ferrari as a gift I believe.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I watched 24/7 and it was good as always, but not particularly memorable.

Craig (Colorado )

Who do you like ? The dog or Kirkland ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I cannot wait for that fight next week. I like Angulo but I think it will be all action for as long as it lasts. Lots of contact in that one and I think Angulo has the better chin.

Jim (Santa Monica)

Surely Will Rosinsky won at least 3 rounds against Edwin Rodriguez last weekend, right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Agreed. 3 rounds.

Steve (NYC)

Any news on who Helenus is fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Nothing definitive yet.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Is ortiz vs alexander in the works, I read a unofficial report, I call it unofficial cause your my official boxing news guru and don't believe anything until it comes from you.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

No that is not in the works, at least not according to Alexander's manager/trainer Kevin Cunningham, who I emailed with the other night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Here's my story on the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV numbers: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7160303/floyd-mayweather-victor-ortiz-fight-drives-more-one-million-buys

Wilkie (Toronto)

Dan, do all Cardinals fans a favour and lend Tony LaRussa the batphone?

Tim (Alexandria)

So, with one criminal case down, how many does Mayweather have to go?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I think five.

leo (NC)

who wants to see marquez drink his own urine again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I do.

Peter (Philly)

Don't forget about Bute vs Johnson next week as well! Better make sure you put fresh batteries in the remote. I hope the chances for a RAD are good as well.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I am planning a RAD since I will not be at either fight next weekend.

Floyd (Arizona)

Dan, Since Mayweather broke another PPV record, does that mean he should recieve a nod over pacman in negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

What record did he break?

nany (compton)

Dan, when you report the PPV resullts of Pac-Marquez, will you also get the official results from what Mayweather tells us to write, instead of HBO PPV official number?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It's the same thing. HBO audits the numbers and provides them to Golden Boy/Mayweather. Golden Boy and Mayweather get the numbers from HBO.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

You think it's a fair possiblity Guerrero-Maidana gets remade for next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I think it is possible, but Guerrero needs to get healthy and Maidana is looking at other fights. Possible, but no guarantee. I would like to see it at some point though. Really like that fight.

joel (burbank)

Dan, why do you refuse and avoid telling who your SOURCE is for the MAY-ORTIZ numbers??? Are you already in the bag of TEAM MAYWEATHER/HAYMON?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Did you read the story? Or are you a dummy?

Derek (Toronto)

Did you hear David Haye is willing to sit back and listen to offers from k2 if they come begging for a fight and meet his terms? Oh, this is in between him sorting through all the movie scripts he is being offered.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Who cares?

Fernando (Ft Carson)

How is Guerrero's recovery going anyway dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

When I spoke with Robert in LA a couple of weeks ago at the Hopkins-Dawson fight he told me he was ahead of sked on his shoulder rehab and that he did not have any pain anymore in the shoulder. He knows he has to take it slowly, but he was happy with the way things were going.

BigMood (Seattle, WA)

How does Mike Jones stack up Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Competitive with both of them for sure.

R! (Bay Area)

Shame no US TV Outlet picked up the Concepcion vs Marquez Rematch...

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I know. Really bummed. I will be looking for a stream.

John (Santa Barbara)

Any news on the search for a new head at Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Nothing at the moment. I've heard a few names kicked around but nothing concrete at the moment.

Floyd (Las Vegas NV)

Why are they even playing a World Series? The Rangers are undefeated in playoff series this year. They have nothing left to prove.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Excactly.

Johnny (CA)

Dan, how did you score the first two Pac-Marq fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I had Marquez winning both. I was at both.

Al (DC)

Any US TV for Wladimir Klitschko vs Jean Marc Mormeck?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Not at the moment.

Jason (DC)

Do you think Marquez has anything more than an outside chance to beat Pac? Would it have to be by KO, or could he actually win on the cards?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I think based on their two previous fights it is more than an "outside" chance, but he is obviously a big underdog.

Fernando (Ft Carson)

Is Malinaggi vs Morales a realistic possibility? Since paulie lacks power I can see it being enticing but he is too quick for morales at ths stage of his career seems like a bad move.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Paulie told me in LA a couple of weeks ago he could still make 140 if he wanted to and since GB has both fighters I could see that match possibly being made.

francis (los angeles)

Will we be able to see a replay of PaquiaoMarquez ! & !! on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

You can see their first two fights on HBO2 back-to-back on Nov. 4 beginning at 11:30 pm ET/PT and on Nov. 5 at 11 am ET/PT.

Jeremy (Austin. TX)

what is going on with that rumor that canelo punch Archie Solis in Mexico and broke hes jaw? i saw it on espn deportes

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Solis claims Canelo attacked him in the street, supposedly a beef over a woman.

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

Why is it that people accuse you of being a Mayweather shill whenever you report something that does not reflect him in a negative light? HBO is part of a publicly traded company and could get in trouble for releasing false numbers.

Isai (OKC)

What did you think of Sulaiman saying he would pay for all of Archie's bills?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Probably wants to protect Canelo. Sulaiman would probably just raise the amount of Canelo's next sanctioning fee to cover the cost.

Zoli (Hungary)

Hello Dan, so is Cloud vs Erdei a fact for 31 December, or we're still waiting for a "yes" from the Cloud team?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Lou DiBella (Erdei's promoter) said he is finalizing a deal with Don King (Cloud's promoter) for the fight. I have stuff in my notebook today about it and the notebook should be up shortly.

Chris (Boston)

Any update on the Geale vs. Pirog fight? I am already praying that some US tv outlet picks it up and puts it on their show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

No that fight is not happening at this point. It was only going to happen if Showtime bought it and at this point Showtime is not buying it and went with another card for Dec. 31. I hope they look to buy it next year.

Mike (Los Angeles)

How about that Jose Linares? A certain Fight of the Year contender. Talk about blood, sweat and tears. Where does Linares go from here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

It is not FOY but is on the honorable mention list. They are talking about a rematch.

kyon (st. louis)

Why is it that fighters promoted by Don King are never in the ring more than 2 times a year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Because Don promotes very few shows these days and let's his fighters wither on the vine, as he has done for years.

C.M. (Toronto)

Mzonke Dana. What do you make of Nacho's point that Pacquiao's technical improvement actually benefits Marquez, as he is not such a "wildcat" anymore?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Legendary name. I think Nacho makes a good point. Manny, while a great fighter, is more predictable now than he was before when he had a lot less discipline in the way he fought.

Ruel (Nj)

Dan? Who would you like ortiz fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I'd like to see the rematch with Berto.

Steven (Evansville, IN)

I'm going to the fights in Cincinnati on November 26th!! It's a 4 hours drive, but it will be worth it!! Any news on any other fights other than the main event??

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Have fun. The only other bout I know of for sure is Gary Russell vs. Dat Nguyen.

matt (canada)

why would demarco fight linares when he doesnt have to? he will make more money fighting morales, who he has a better chance against

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

The wretched WBA might order a rematch and DeMarco could probably make an excellent payday to fight Linares again in a fight that HBO or Showtime would probably be very interested in.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

What do you think of that proposed PPV for early next year with Maidana-Morales II and DeMarco-Linares II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I LOVE IT.

Rob (NY)

DTM IF..De La Hoya makes a two fight comback...can you see a potential middelweight fight with Sergio Martinez ? I give him a pretty good shot at winning

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Oscar making a comeback grows less and less each day.

Rich (London)

Heard any more on Kell Brook coming to America? His last fight: weak opponent or he's the real deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes, he will be on the Dec. 17 Ward-Froch undercard. No opponent yet though. His last opponent, Rafal Jackiewicz, was a legit guy. An older guy, but he has been a longtime contender and had never been stopped. Very solid win for Brook.

DH (SoCal)

Danimal, any update on a location for the Showtime 12/31 card? You tweeted last week that the Anaheim area was a possibility. However, the Anaheim Ducks have a game that night at the Honda Center. Is this fight going somewhere else in Southern California?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Anaheim, but I never said the Honda Center. Supposed to be at the Anaheim convention center.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan, it's a shame that Molina is being shafted for Cintron. He clearly deserves the Canelo fight. Do you think Molina will get a fight in which he will gain (more of) the boxing public support to get a big fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Molina did get the shaft and Cintron in no way deserves a fight with Canelo. Molina is in a very tough spot. Not a big name, brings no money to the table, has not real fan base and is dangerous enough to be avoided.

Tim (Denver,co)

No trick or treat themed chat this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Any ideas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Notebook is up: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7159931/brandon-rios-yuriorkis-gamboa-fantasy-fight-close-reality

Martin (NYC)

So who the heck is WV2 fighting this weeknd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Roberto Leyva, a completely shot former strawweight titlist who cant fight at all anymore.

Mike (Chicago)

I'm confused, last week's Notebook talked about Erdei opposing Shumenov on Dec 31st. How can Erdei be in talks with both Shumenov and Cloud for the same date?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Shumenov was one possibilty but it is not happening. The Cloud fight probably is. There are always multiple fights being discussed at the same time.

Rodney (Toledo)

Hey Dan, what's next for Katsidas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Seriously? Read the notebook and check the schedule.

Sim (UK)

Dan, were you suprised by the possibility of Gamboa-Rios being made? Up till now I always thought Donaire-Gamboa was more likely.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I thought so also, but Donaire is just going to 122 and Gamboa is going to 130, they are going to be separated by more weight for the time being and Rios-Gamboa is more doable at this point.

Tim (Denver,co)

If you don't give Floyd enough candy he will call up his homies... Who have guns.. They'll take care of ya.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

13 years ago this weekend I covered my first HBO fight, Naseem Hamed-Wayne McCullough in Atlantic City.

Chris O. (The Bing, NY)

How does it feel to be called the biggest Floyd hater and in his pocket at the same time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Welcome to my world.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, do you know how are the sales going for the Cotto - Margarito 2 fight ? Is it still well on it's way to being a sell out ? I'm going to the fight and one of the big reasons why is that I was hoping for a crazy atmosphere in a packed MSG ... I hope the place is packed to the rafters !

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Arum said at the undercard presser in NYC last week before the Donaire-N****** fight that they had less thab 4,000 tickets left to go for a sellout. The place will be insane.

psycho (LaLaLand)

Bob Arum aint giving out candy this weekend, needs to let it marinate a bit

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Greg (VA)

I went trick or treating dressed up as a security guard. I got to Mayweather's house and he didn't give me any candy, but he wouldn't stop poking me.

Geoff (Burlington, ON)

My wife is flying me down to Cotto/Margarito tickets for my 40th birthday for my first live pro fight....yes, I think she is a keeper....

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

That is awesome.

Martin (NYC)

Who did you have winning b/n Rodriguez-Rozinsky?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Rodriguez, not 10-0, but he clearly won to me.

Brody (NYC)

Kudos to Top Rank for creating an incredible atmosphere for the entire card at MSG last Saturday. Live boxing needs more of the theatrics - music between the rounds and fights, etc. The crowd was pumped.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I agree.

David Haye (Halloween City)

This year I plan to go as a competitive boxer..

The Met (T.O.)

Great notebook. Shame on Gary Russell Jr. insisting on 127 when he usually fights at featherweight anyway. I didn't realize guys coming off 8-rounders were privy to making such demands.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Agreed. Russell thing is absurd.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Here it is nearly November and I don't see a clear cut fighter of the year candidate so far. I'm thinking it could well go to the winner of Ward - Froch.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

It really is up in the air at this point. I do think the winner of the Super Six has a great chance to get it this year. I thought had Hopkins beaten Dawson he would win it, but that didnt happen.

Malik (London, England)

Hi Dan, do you know if SKY are still interested in the top overseas fights anymore? the Pacquaio fight has gone to Primetime, they lost Mayweather to Primetime and the Cotto v Margarito fight is being shown on Boxnation. I really hope they still involved in top level fights!

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I dont know what Sky is up to. They haven't been showing top overseas fights lately and they have lost several top quality domestic fights as well. BoxNation is off to a great start both with the fights Frank Warren is putting on there (Cleverly-Bellew, for example) as well as picking up some US fights and the Sauerland fights from Germany.

Karl (NY)

David Haye can't trick or treat this year because he sprained his toe.

C.M. (Toronto)

I bet Abner Mares is going trick-or-treating dressed as The Nutcracker.

Gary (Ft. Wayne)

I am dressing as David Haye for Halloween and asking every house for TOE-blerone

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

LOL.

biglang buena park, ca [via mobile]

Why don't sergio martinez call out Andre ward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

At this point for what? Sergio JUST fought. Ward has a very tough fight with Froch in two months.

Ross (Indianapolis)

How in the world did ESPN manage to find a picture of Clottey actually throwing a punch against Manny for your notebook today?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it.

C.M. (Toronto)

The whole Gary Russell Jr. thing underlines why fans resent Al Haymon and his fighters so much. Not so much the sway with HBO, but the unfair and irrational demands they use it on.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

That Russell -- who I think is an EXCEPTIONAL prospect -- is being handled the way he is at this point with zero resume as a pro, zero notable wins and has never sold a ticket thus far is simply incredible. Just imagine what he and his team will be like if/when he becomes champion and starts making real money?

norm (los angeles)

Dan, any tip where Todd Duboef currently is here in LA. I need to get to him first so I can get free Tickets.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I have no idea where he is. I spoke to him last night and he wouldn't tell me where he was going!

Joe (Santa Monica)

Last time you heard a boxer say, "I'm bored" in the middle of a championship fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Never. Donaire's comment to Garcia was the first I had ever heard of that.

Terry (PA)

Floyd will be dressing up as a duck!!!

Danny (chicago)

DTM, was just reading transcripts of last weeks chat. You said something like a fighters amatuer accomplishments is a factor for you when voting a fighter into the HOF. In that case would you already consider Guillermo Rigondeaux for the HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Definitely not. I said amateur creds are part of the whole package when I make my picks but pro accomplishment is most of the deal.

Mitch (Beijing)

I will come dressed as Bradley's forehead. I'll just bang open doors with it until the candy pours out.

Omar Narvaez (Argentina)

I'm going as the Statue Of Liberty for Halloween.

Tim (Denver,co)

Sulaiman wants everyone to trick or treat at his house this year. For a small sanctioning fee of course.

julio (dfw)

Do you know if we're any closer to seeing a Cunningham/Adamek rematch? I know many people don't care because most don't pay attention to the cruiserweight division, but that was an amazing first fight they had

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

That fight is not being discussed at all. Cunningham has a rematch with Hernandez coming next.

Clark (Madison)

Dan, is DiBella in play for the Showtime job? Is it something he wants? I think he would be a great fit and his "enthusiasm" would serve fight fans well.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

My understanding is that they have spoken and that he is not going to Showtime. I think under the right circumstances it is something he would be very interested in but I dont think Showtime is looking to make a huge splash and to try to compete with HBO. If you hire a guy like Lou that is what he would want. I also, frankly, don't think that Showtime would pay Lou the kind of money he would want. When he left HBO 10 years ago he was making seven figures a year. I dont think the Showtime gig would pay even that much. Lou is also his own boss right now and that is a big deal.

william potter (sc)

what happened to Celestino Caballero

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

He won a 126 belt a few weeks ago in a rematch with Barros in Argentina.

ricardo (oxnard)

Quickest Way for HBO to Fire President Elect Ken Hershman: Make a PPV card with Hopkins-Dawson II as main event, Bradley-Alexander II as undercard #1, andfinally, Donaire-narvaez II as undercard #2.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I have faith in Ken that nothing like that will happen!

John (Barcelona (formerly San Fran))

Shane Mosley will be a Walmart greeter for Halloween...he just loves shaking hands

Oliver McCall (Chicago)

I will show up to people's doors and cry until I get candy.

D (Pa)

Larry Merchant will dress up as a 30 year old man and kick Floyd's a@#

Kevin (Denver)

Who is the actual mandatory for Vitali? Arreola is ranked #1, but appears to be headed towards Wladimir, Stiverne is ranked #4, but "won" an eliminator of sorts...I'm confused...

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

There is no official mandatory yet in the wretched WBC. They will make that call at the convention in December. In the wretched WBC rankings the No. 1 contender is not necessarily the official mandatory challenger.

Rebecca (New York)

What did you think of Sergio Martinez in the ESPN body issue? He should start modeling full time

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He has done modeling.

Mike (Los Angeles)

How about TR and GB (Russell, Canelo...) stop "Tricking" us with bogus fights and start "treating" us with fights. Like TR (Bradley/Rios), GB (more Maidana/...

Richard (London UK)

Roy Jones is going trick or treating, but will stay out way too long and wonder why no one is giving him candy in November

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What are your feelings about your tweets being directly cited by THE RING as a reason they supposed have chosen to not award the title to Dawson until the Cali Commish rules?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I was surprised by that. I offered my personal opionion on the situation. If some publication wants to use my views to support its own decision that is on them, but I had nothing to do with it nor would.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

as much as everyone in the world hates the WBC, i like the idea of allowing fans attend their conference in Vegas.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Gino (The Bronx)

Dan, your thoughts on Marco Huck challenging the Klitschko.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I never knew a cruiserweight who didnt think he could be heavyweight champion. Klitschko will destroy him if they ever fight, but I could see it happening. Klitschkos have so few other opponents and Huck is popular in Germany, where the Klitschkos fight. There is the issue of TV. Klitschkos have a deal with RTL and Huck is on ARD as part of the Sauerland deal. The fight would certainly have to be on ARD if it ever happend.

Wade (Albany)

If Showtime did hire Dibella wouldnt it raise a conflict of interest since he has a promotional company?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Obviously, if that happened, he would have to sell his company.

Justin (Seattle)

Thanks for the tip on Freddie Roach joining Twitter. It is a must follow, every good thus far.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

He is @freddieroach. That is his legitimate account.

Dc [via mobile]

Any info on who Anthony Peterson will fight Dec 10 on khan vs Peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

TBA.

Micah (PHX)

That's part of the beast of what Dan does....he is NOT biased. He calls it as he see's it and people freaking hate that.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

Dan, the HBO Cincy card, my understanding is it's a split site broadcast. Do you know if they will have an HBO broadcast crew there or will they call it from the other venue?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

My understanding is that the crew will be in Cinci and call the Mexico fight off the monitors.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

You know anything of Brandon Gonzalez who is fighting tonight on Showtime? Is he any good?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

He is in the main event on ShoBox tonight. He's an undefeated prospect from Northern California in the stable of trainer Vigil Hunter, who trains Andre Ward. Gonzalez gained some attention because he was the fighter who cut Ward in sparring, which forced the Froch fight to be postponed.

Richie (Bronx NY)

any word on when Cotto/Marg face off will be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Mike (NY)

Is Teddy Atlas training Povetkin for the Cedric Boswell fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

As far as I know, yes. He is Povetkin's trainer.

Richard (London UK)

Is it true that Marquez will be sparring Tim Bradley? Seems a weird idea to spar a guy who is infamous for his use of the head...even with head guards on.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

No, they are not sparring with each other. They are sparring in a promotional appearance together but against other guys.

Paul Williams update?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

There is no update. Wont be back until next year.

kyon (st. louis)

Yo Dan, are you suprised to hear Jermain Taylor wants to fight at 160 again when there are bigger and better matches (maybe Glen Johnson or Rematch with Froch) to be made at 168?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Not at all because he is at his best at 160. Part of him being licensed and getting Pat Burns agree to train him again was the promise he would fight at 160, not 168, where he cannot handle things.

Sandro (London)

Given what Hopkin's has done in recent times, has Calzaghe gone up in your estimations? Is he a future HoF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Calzaghe is a future HOFer and it has nothing to do with what Hopkins has done since their fight.

ScouseDave (Liverpool)

How does Tony Bellew do against prime RJJ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Oh stop.

John (Barcelona (formerly San Fran))

Paul Williams will be the Leaning Tower of Pisa for Halloween...leaning right into left hands, know what I'm sayin

Mitch (Beijing)

Rios has a ton of heart is a good fighter. Gamboa is way to skilled and too fast though. Size difference eliminated by blinding speed.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

That is one opinion and there are lots who view it opposite, which is what makes it a very interesting fight.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I see Chris Arreola has the tomato can Raphael Butler lined up next. After that, is he planning on taking on a real fighter? I give him credit for staying busy, but it's time for somebody like Dimitrenko, Fury, or Thompson, don't you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He is not fighting Raphael Butler. He is fighting Alonzo Buter.

Brent (Treynor, IA)

Is Pac-Marquez 3 going to be in movie theaters? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

No.

Azteca604 (Vancouver)

What's your take on the Canelo situation, beating up on a 108 pounder? What's your gut feeling? Mine's guilty because once you start changing details of your story, you've been coached what to say. If innocent, ones story never changes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I have no opinion. I was not there and have heard conflicting reports.

Tasman (Atlanta)

Do you think the Linares-Demarco stoppage was a bit premature?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Not at all. AT ALL. It was a GREAT stoppage.

R! (Bay Area)

Can Tony Thompson step in for TBA vs Helenius?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Not happening. Tony is about to become the IBF's mandatory most likely.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Hey Dan - Is there a chance of an Adamek-Arreola rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I think it is possible at some point, yes.

Desmond Johnson (Operating Room)

Hey Dan, when can we expect to see Ismayhl Silakh next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

He fights next week under Lebedev-Toney in Russia.

Chris C (Washington DC)

Hey Dan, are you surprised at how fast the Khan-Peterson tickets are selling? I tried to buy a $75 ticket at 11 am today and they were all sold out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

If that is true, great for the show in DC. I think it will do well here.

George (Fontana, CA)

Dan are you pumped up for tonights Solo Boxeo card featuring Eloy Perez v. Ira Terry?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

No. I dont get pumped for dreckles like that.

Nick (KY)

Reading your twitter....could have sworn Pac-Cotto also did 1.25. Am I wrong on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

When it was first announced officially, it was announced at 1.25 million. Keep in mind when numbers are announced they are done with a formula not the EXACT numbers. MOST of the time announced numbers rise slightly when the fight is fully audited. In the case of Pacquiao-Cotto the number dropped slightly when the buys were all in, so it is not at 1.25 anymore. But the drop is the exception to the rule.

big d (cm punks bunker)

thoughts on everyone saying mayweather ortiz was disaster number wise? hopefully this proves the man is still a draw. what are your thoughts on if mayweather fought khan? how much do you think it would do?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

My thoughts are that those who spread misinformation or "reported" poor numbers had no fact or on the record comments from anyone who would actually know. Shame on them.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

I'm going as a Fight Freak for Halloween-- wearing a KISS T-shirt, a fake beard and glasses (a la King Freak), carrying an enlarged copy of the current notebook, and burning a cardboard cutout of Jose Sulaiman in effigy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Sweet.

Village Idiot (The Internet)

I told you Mayweather-Ortiz only did 850,000 buys -- oh, wait...

Ronal atlanta [via mobile]

Is james toney hall of famer when its all said and done

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Eventually. I will not vote for him on the first ballot, however, due to TWO failed steroid tests.

Mike (Chicago)

If someone dresses as Ricky Hatton for Halloween, how many Ricky Hattons would there be?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Still only 1.

Desmond Johnson (Operating Room)

Hey Dan, any chance u will be at Dec 31st card in Anaheim? In your opinion will Cloud Erdei get done?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Zero chance.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

This is not critical of you specifically Dan but why do HOF voters refuse to vote someone in "first ballot" but know they will vote in that person in a couple of years later. To me you are either a HOFer or you are not. It doesn't matter if it's on the first ballot of the fifth or sixth one. Sorry for the rant...

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

It my right to vote a guy in later. To me, first ballot is a little extra special. A guy like Toney is obviously a HOF talent with a HOF resume. But two failed steroid testst upset me and I will not honor him by voting for him on the first ballot even though he deserves to be in the HOF for what he did long before he used banned substances. Sorry for the rant.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)
