Chat with Ryan McGee

Ryan McGee
  (2:01 PM)

What's up my candy corn cramming brothers and sisters and welcome to this BOOtiful Halloween edition of the Monday Motorsports Block Party. I'm sitting here with a bowl full of fun size candy and I'm dressed like Richard Petty. So let's get to the queries!

dz (nowhere, nm)

i guess vickers will not be getting xmas cards this year.

Ryan McGee
  (2:02 PM)

Yeah, no joke. I think the guy is staring at a future with no ride and was trying a little too hard. I don't think he could win a ride yesterday, but I do think he could have lost one.

Willy (San Dimas, Ca)

Do you think this Dega, #48 crack the rear end scandal has finally soured Jimmie on Chad and that HMS will be making some changes on the #48 team?

Ryan McGee
  (2:03 PM)

Not a chance.

Ron (Smithville)

If Edwards wins the chase with only one win the whole year, will NASCAR finally be prompted to add more points for winning races?

Ryan McGee
  (2:04 PM)

First, that's a big if. He could win at Texas and Homestead. Second, you know me Ron, I've been screaming that the winner should get more points for years. But I don't expect that to change.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Ryan, while I applaud Smoke for winning a race with some muscle, if he takes it all isn't it another "black eye" for The Chase? He's obviously one of the greatest drivers our there, but he simply hasn't had the team most of the season. I know Edwards only has one win, but his team has been better overall. There's really no comparison, but The Chase has distorted the fact that the 99 team is far superior.

Ryan McGee
  (2:06 PM)

I hear you Rob, but the Chase isn't about the first 26 races. If it was then Kyle Busch would be a three-time champ! It's the playoffs. A postseason. And sometimes teams that barely made it into the playoffs end up winning it all over teams with better regular season records. Ask the St. Louis Cardinals.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

What makes the Roush Fords so dominant at Homestead?

Ryan McGee
  (2:07 PM)

Some teams are just great at some racetracks, like RCR at restrictor plate tracks. Roush has always been stout at 1.5-mile intermediate tracks. Plus, you haven't had Jimmie Johnson dropping the hammer in the finale because he didn't have to.

Ron (OH)

Do you think Kyle Busch will go down in NASCAR history as another Mark Martin who was respected by everone in the sport and won lots of races but never the Sprint Cup?

Ryan McGee
  (2:09 PM)

I think it might be a little too early to go that far, but there have to be some questions asked by the people at JGR. Not just about Kyle but about whatever they are doing as a team once the Chase starts. It's amazing how he vanishes every fall. Even on tracks where he crushed the field in the season's first half. I'll give you once or twice as a fluke. Three marks a pattern.

Andrew (Kettering, OH)

With announcers Mikey Waltrip and Hermie Sadler racing in Sprint Cup do you think we will see other announcers like Rudd, Jarrett, Spencer and Kyle Petty back in Sprint Cup anytime soon?

Ryan McGee
  (2:10 PM)

Nope. DJ doesn't have the itch at all anymore, Rudd is racing bicycles back in Virginia, Kyle Petty has resigned himself to the fact that he's done. And if Jimmy Spencer gets back in a Cup car I'll go find another sport to cover.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think Danica will open the Sprint Cup doors for Joanna Long, Jen Jo Cobb and other women?

Ryan McGee
  (2:11 PM)

It can't hurt. But she has to have success. Personally, I'm pulling for Chrissy Wallace, Mike's daughter. She's legit. Just needs someone to give her a chance.

Ryan McGee
  (2:11 PM)

Speaking of the Wallaces, thoughts and prayers to the entire family after the death of their patriarch, Russ.

Ozzie (Phoenix)

which of the 3 remaining races do you think will be the most crucial to determining a Cup champion? Also, what change would you like to see NASCAR make to enhance the product?

Ryan McGee
  (2:13 PM)

Phoenix. Why? It's a total wild card after the repave and reconfiguration. Pretty much all the drivers came back from last month's test sesssion have said they don't know what to expect when we go out there two weeks from now.

Ryan McGee
  (2:14 PM)

As for the change, no surprise here, I say shorten the races. I think every race other than Daytona 500, Southern 500, Coca-Cola 600 could lose 100 miles/laps and we'd never miss them.

Geri (Canada)

Did you enjoy the SHORT TRACK race yesterday Ryan? I loved it, beating, banging, taking, giving and the result sometimes no room, cars spinning &. Much action all day long.

Ryan McGee
  (2:15 PM)

It was awesome. If had a billion dollars I'd be building a short track in a big market and begging NASCAR to race there.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

So what was said over the 29 radio about the 33? Paraphrase if you need to keep it clean.

Ryan McGee
  (2:16 PM)

Early in the race teh 29 got hung out on the outside line, a death sentence at Martinsville. The 33 came along and would give him any room. Harvick came over the radio and essentially suggested that Bowyer couldn't be gone from RCR fast enough. He's not the only person there who feels that way.

Tyler (Greenfield, NY)

What kind of "investors" would be interested in investing in RedBull now that the biggest asset-Kahne-is gone?

Ryan McGee
  (2:18 PM)

It's a team that's proven it can win races, get a Chase spot, and is managed by Jay Frye, who is a highly-respected racing guy. The fact that they have remained competitive during a time when most of the people in the building are on short-timer status isn't a bad selling point to a potential investor/sponsor.

bryan (jackson, ky)

on scale of 1/10 chances Smoke can actaully win this thing?

Ryan McGee
  (2:19 PM)

7.5

Jack (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey Ryan, now that all 3 Hendrick cars are out of championship contention do you think Rick Hendrick will do everything he can to help the 14 win it all?

Ryan McGee
  (2:21 PM)

Can't hurt. Certainly not to the point that some at SHR have suggested in the past that HMS kind of stepped on the garden hose when they were competing against each other for the Cup. But keep in mind Hendrick is also gunning for its 200th win. That's a very, very big deal to Mr. Hendrick. I just talked with him about that this morning. That's goal #1.

Cory (Geneva, IL)

Glad to see Jr. finally act like he cared out there. I know he does, but he always just seems so passive on the track. Good to see him mix it up a little bit.

Ryan McGee
  (2:22 PM)

He always cares. But it was noticeable how hard he was racing, wasn't it?

Brian (Oklahoma City)

Why did Edwards get a black flag on a restart yesterday and then why did NASCAR rescind the penalty?

Ryan McGee
  (2:24 PM)

They initially believed that he had jumped out of his lane on the lap 435 restart, but after they reviewed the video in Race Control, they essentially picked up the penalty flag.

Ryan McGee
  (2:25 PM)

I was working at NASCAR Images (now NASCAR Media Group) when we helped Race Control put that video replay system together. It's pretty tricked-out. Every camera - usually a couple dozen - are digitally recorded and can be played back. Good to know they are using them!

Dumindu (Vista,California)

Will Kahne pay back wrecking Vickers after what happen yesterday?

Ryan McGee
  (2:26 PM)

No one will be handing out any payback at Texas. It's too fast and too dangerous. We might see some at Phoenix. But in Kahne's case I think he's trying way too hard to win a race for these poor Red Bull guys who don't know if they'll have a job after Homestead.

Dumindu (Vista,California)

Happy Halloween Ryan, from the past NASCAR Drivers, who will you dress up as?

Ryan McGee
  (2:27 PM)

Always Richard Petty!

Jeff (Georgia)

Ryan, I loved it when DJ said on the broadcast that if Kurt Busch had a better attitude in the car he might do a little better. Well said. Btw, how bout that Georgia defense? Thanks

Ryan McGee
  (2:29 PM)

DJ's right and he knows of what he speaks. He admits now that there was a stretch of his career where he let his attitude get away from him. It didn't last long because he realized it was hurting him. And yes, how about those Dawgs. Huge win. Now they need South Carolina to lose.

Scott (Kansas City)

What did Kenseth have to say about Vickers after the race? Also, go Chiefs on Halloween Monday Night Football!!

Ryan McGee
  (2:30 PM)

Kenseth played it more down the middle about Vickers than most. At the time he hadn't had a chance to check the video so he was careful not to place too much blame. Others were not so careful. On team radios the whole race spotters and crew chiefs were warning their drivers to look out for the 83. At one point Rick Hendrick even jumped on the radio to warn his guys. And it ended up being Vickers that cost Johnson the race!

Diane (Los Angeles)

OK is this really Ryan or did Johnny Benson just keep chatting after his time was up?;)

Ryan McGee
  (2:31 PM)

I knew that was coming...

Ryan McGee
  (2:32 PM)

One year I did get some Lipton Tea racing gear and went out as Johnny Benson for Halloween.

txtechmacattack (lubbock)

RCR just got his 100th win with Clint so is Harvick's whining at #33 more sour grapes from him?

Ryan McGee
  (2:32 PM)

One has nothing to do with the other. And like I said, Harvick isn't alone. The Bowyer-RCR relationship has run its course and its time to move on. It happens.

Wayne (Oregon)

Heard from a friend with close ties to HMS that Chad has been warned by HMS management to abide by the rules & the spirit of the rules; Chad must stop trying to see how far the rules can be bent w/o breaking them. If he's caught, there will be heck to pay and he'd possible face a 1-year suspension. Does that make sense?

Ryan McGee
  (2:34 PM)

I jsut left Hendrick Motorsports. Spent all morning there. I have no doubt there was a conversation with Knaus to take it easy. But I have a hard time believeing that a team built by Harry Hyde and carried to the next level by Ray Evernham would be losing a lot of sleep over pushing the limits of the rule book.

ian (smyrna, TN)

just wanted to my fanily are sending out prayers to the wallaces.go smoke

Ryan McGee
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks Ian. We all do.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

Ryan, if the 99 wins the championship does it help find sponsorship for their 4th car in either 2012 or for sure 2013?

Ryan McGee
  (2:35 PM)

Certainly. But man, there's no biggest indicator as to how tough it is out there right now than the 99 still having to piece together sponsorship.

Ryan McGee
  (2:36 PM)

By the way, I don't want any of you leave me, but a heads up: the NASCAR Now roundtable is on ESPN2 right now...

Zach (Ohio)

Hey Ryan! My wife has a Facebook friend that insists on making a post about who won the race every week. This is annoying to no end for the following reasons: 1) If I watched the race, I don't need you to tell me who won, 2) If I TiVo'd the race, I don't want you to tell me who won, and 3) If I didn't watch the race, but I still want to know who won, your Facebook page would be about the last place I'd go for the news. Can you please issue a collective "Knock it off!" to these types of people for me?

Ryan McGee
  (2:38 PM)

I feel your pain. I am a Survivor fan and can't see it when I'm on the road with work. I have to stay off Facebook because I have one friend who feels the need to post every detail of the show like a running blog. So yes, KNOCK IF OFF Zach's friend!

Ryan McGee
  (2:38 PM)

By the way, how stupid was that move that Ozzy just made?

Shayne - NY [via mobile]

Take it easy on Vickers... The guy has had the worst luck this season with getting caught up in everyone else's mess. Look at the first 8 races for proof. He just finally had enough yesterday, it's completely understandable really.

Ryan McGee
  (2:40 PM)

I love BV. It kills me that he might end up without a chair when the Silly Season music stops. And it was understandable for up to three times. When you get to six, seven, eight, and you ultimately determine the outcome of the race...that's a bit much.

Anthony (Charlotte, NC)

Abide by the "spirit" of the rules? What about the spirit of NASCAR, which is exactly that of SEC football. "If y'aint cheatin', y'aint tryin'."

Ryan McGee
  (2:41 PM)

Pushing the rules envelope is as much a part of NASCAR as putting on a helmet. I go by Smokey Yunick's rule. Messing with big engines or tricking up tires is just plain wrong. Everything else is fair game.

Derrick (Buffalo)

On a scale of 1 to 10..10 being the worst..how bad is Earnhardt Ganassi Racing? I give them a 9.98

Ryan McGee
  (2:42 PM)

I'd put them at 8, leaning toward 9. They have left me scratching my head all year.

Marcus (New York, Ny)

Hey Ryan, has there been any more talk of Denny Hamlin getting a new crew chief or was all that just rumor?

Ryan McGee
  (2:43 PM)

Some, yes. I think there's more to it than rumor, but I don't expect a change.

Diane (Los Angeles)

Did you have the over or under on 72 days for Kardashian/Humphries wedding?

Ryan McGee
  (2:43 PM)

Under. WAY under.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

You see Stenhouse and Bayne full-time in Cup in 2013 for RFR or RPM? Seems like it would make sense on a timeline.

Ryan McGee
  (2:44 PM)

I say yes to both. Problem is finding somewhere to put them. Someone will have to go.

Gene (Ohio)

Do you think Stewart is making a big mistake trash talking to a tough guy like Carl Edwards and the Roush guys?

Ryan McGee
  (2:46 PM)

Nope. I think we learned last year with Harvick and Jimmie leaning on Hamlin that it is at least worth trying. I don't think it'll do much to Edwards and really don't think it'll make Bob Osborne nervous. That dude's an android. But it could certainly creep into the heads of someone below them, "Oh crap, we have to hold off Tony Stewart!"

Ryan McGee
  (2:46 PM)

I liked it. Reminded me of Dale Senior.

Doug (Denver)

I tell you what Ryan, I give Mr Edwards a lot of credit, even he couldnt hide from the fact his car was crap. If he can keep that type of luck on his side, he may win the next 6 championships in a row!!

Ryan McGee
  (2:48 PM)

There's no doubt that he has had a ton of luck. But that's big part of it. If he wins the title I think the race we'll look back on as the day it happened will be Kansas. You talk about a crappy car! And he got it back up into the top five. Then he went down a lap twice yesterday on what is likely his worst oval, and he still got a top ten.

Ryan McGee
  (2:48 PM)

Feels very 24/48 to me.

Mitch (Chicago)

Hey Ryan, is their any particular reason why Hendrick Motorsports doesn't have a Nationwide or Truck team in NASCAR? Does Rick Hendrick think Jimmy, Jeff, & Dale are gonna race forever..

Ryan McGee
  (2:50 PM)

They did for a long time. Won titles in both. But the simple fact of the matter is that it doesn't make a ton of financial sense. You can't make money in those series and they'd rather target sponsors for four Cup teams than six or seven teams spread over multiple series.

Ryan McGee
  (2:51 PM)

Plus, they have the resources to restart any of those programs if they want to. And don't worry about them not developing young drivers. They can always go sign whomever they want in the free agent market (see: Kasey Kahne) and they do have Chase Elliott's son in their development pipleline. That kid is fast.

Caleb (Boston)

Help me out here Ryan, how is Michael Waltrip able to gain & keep such big name sponsors like Aarons

Ryan McGee
  (2:53 PM)

He's phenomenal in the board room. And dude can't say good morning without mentioning at least three sponsors. He has a tremendous personal relationship with the people at Aaron's and NAPA because of all the above.

jason (new york)

If Tony wins the title, where will it put him on the all time greatest scale?

Ryan McGee
  (2:55 PM)

Well, let's look at the other three-time champs. Petty and Earnhardt have seven. Johnson has five. Gordon has four. Waltrip, Lee Petty, Yarborough, and David Pearson all have three. Smoke would join them. By that count he's top ten. At the very least, he's a sure-fire Hall of Famer.

Geri (Canada)

I'll ask first, your top 5 this weekend in CUP please & thanks, Ryan?

Ryan McGee
  (2:57 PM)

Give me: 17, 48, 14, 11, 99. Darkhorses: 5, 33, 31, 6.

Marco (Trenton)

Hey Ryan, whats up with another F1 race in the United States?? & out of all places in New Jersey!!!!

Ryan McGee
  (2:59 PM)

We'll see. Selfishly I'd love to see it, especially in the shadow of New York. But I have a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to new tracks and races. I believe them when I see them. Hard to imagine that F1 bosses would say five years ago they didn't need North America and now they'd have three every season.

Steve (Iowa)

Jeff Gordon said he wanted a track like Richmond in the chase and get rid of a 1.5 mile track. Iowa Speedway sounds just right. Thoughts?

Ryan McGee
  (2:59 PM)

I'm in!

Ryan (Ventura CA)

If Tony wins the title his new nick name should be book ends

Ryan McGee
  (3:00 PM)

I like it. Trademark it now!

Ryan McGee
  (3:01 PM)

Alright folks, gotta go. I'm going to watch the last half-hour of NASCAR Now with my twin brother Johnny Benson and then get ready for Halloween. In the meantime, hit me up on Twitter and email, tip your wait staff, and enjoy the "Monster Mash" over and over all night long.
