Chat with Jeff Dickerson

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:57 PM)

Time to shake off the bye weekend rust and get ready for a huge game for the Bears next Monday in Philly.

Don (Chicago, IL)

Will this years Bears D continue their history of containing Vick or is this the year he is able to break loose?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:03 PM)

The Bears have always done a good job keeping Vick under control. Last year, they dropped the safeties deep and forced Vick to hit the underneath routes. It worked well until the 4th quarter when the Eagles nearly came back and won the game. The Bears held McCoy to only 53 yards in that meeting last year at Solider Field, that will be key again on Monday night. If the Bears can't stop the run, then stopping Vick becomes much more difficult. But to answer your question, I feel comfortable saying the Bears will have a solid game plan vs. Philly, but can they execute like last year? We'll see.

Eric (Rockford)

Should the Bears consider moving Urlacher to Safety, he has played the position, could help in run support and has the speed to stay with a receiver does he not?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think Urlacher should move to safety. He's fast, but not fast enough to cover the deep middle or deep half of the field. Keep him at MLB.

Mike (Daytona Beach)

Jeff, This whole Forte thing has me rattled. Will there be a contract extension buy the start of next years training camp? Or is there a holdout in Forte's future. He is one of the best backs since the Payton and Neil Anderson days.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:10 PM)

Sure, the Bears and Forte could agree on an extension between now and next year. That's very possible. Or the Bears could use the franchise tag the next two years and keep Forte under contract through 2013. While I like Forte, and always enjoy seeing good employees get rewarded, he'll still collect big $$ the next two years if the Bears use the tag. I find the "Pay Forte" movement to be a bit funny. Unless you are Forte and his agent, why would anybody campaign for a guy to get paid? Don't get me wrong, Forte is awesome, and in my opinion, the Bears best RB since the great Walter Payton, but the Bears can keep him in Chicago for at least the next two and a half seasons if they so choose. Shouldn't that be the most important thing to Bears fans? I'm not worried about Forte's bank account (he's doing just fine), I'm worried about him leaving...which he can't do until the 2014 season if the Bears play hardball and use the tag.

Zach (illinois)

Will the Bears sign Tom Nelson?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:12 PM)

That was a real bummer last week for Nelson. He had a nice workout for the Bears at Halas Hall, and it looked like he was going to fill that roster spot left by Chris Harris. But Jerry Angelo had been scouting Jabara Williams since the preseason, so when he got waived by the Rams, it changed the whole equation. I like Nelson and believe he would be a nice addition as the Bears 5th safety and a special teams contributor. But the Bears went in a different direction.

Brian (Ottawa, IL)

Will the bears be able to stop eagles run game? Do any of the bears, watch their next opponents games? I mean physically watch the upcoming opponents game?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:15 PM)

Brian, I'm positive a good chunk of the roster watched the Eagles vs. Cowboys game last night. Can they stop the run? I don't know. They stopped Adrian Peterson a few weeks ago, but Philadelphia is a much better offense. I know the Eagles are 3-4, but there is a lot of talent on that roster.

john (texas)

what are the chances bennet and carimi will play monday?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:18 PM)

I believe Bennett will be back vs. Eagles. Not 100% sure yet about Carimi. He could be active, but maybe the Bears keep Louis at RT and Spencer at RG. Let's see how Carimi practices this week. Although he was on the field last week during the two bye week practices, those weren't good indicators. We'll know much more about Carimi after Thursday's workout.

jimmy (NY)

who are the bears looking at for safety since harris was cut?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:18 PM)

It seems like they're content with Conte, Wright, Meriweather, Steltz and Walters.

bob (VA)

do you think bowman could be converted into a safety? hes a total ball hawk

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:20 PM)

Bob, I think Bowman is an above average coverage corner who's talents are being wasted in the zone heavy Cover 2. If I had to guess, I'd say he signs with a new team in the offseason.

Matt Forte (Chicago)

JD - Jerry angelo is playing TAG with me, Is it hard to see how good i am ? or am i not running hard enough to get what i deserve ? please explain

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:22 PM)

Matt - Just keep playing at this level, and you'll be a very rich man, one way or another.

Dan (Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA)

Whats up Jeff, how do you see the Bears faring against the Eagles without Chris Harris? I don't believe that either Minor Wrong or Chris Conte are better than him. Was this the wrong move with him going to the Lions?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:26 PM)

Sorry guys. Having a little issue posting questions. Going to cut and paste.

Tommy (Austin,TX)

Is Urlacher's contract set up where he will retire as a Bear?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:28 PM)

There we go. Tommy- Urlacher is under contract through 2012. At the rate he's going, he might be able to play a few years beyond 2012. That would be interesting. I believe the plan is for Urlacher to retire as a Bear, but I guess anything is possible. I'm sure we all thought Brett Favre would retire as a Packer.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:30 PM)

Back to Dan's question about the safeties without Chris Harris.......I appreciate what Chris Harris brought to the table in terms of intelligence and leadership, but he just wasn't playing well this year. I don't think the Bears will miss him on the field vs. Eagles. Off the field might be a different story.

Adam (Kenosha, WI)

Why would the Bears use the franchise tag on Forte when they are 18 million pluse under the cap?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:31 PM)

They don't have to spend that money until 2013. When was the last time you saw the Bears spend money just for the sake of spending money?!

Uran Kabashi (Chicago)

Do you think the Bears secondary will match up well with the speedy receivers of the Eagles?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:33 PM)

I'm worried about DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Bears did a terrific job versus those two last year, but this isn't the same defense as in 2010.

Darth Ditka (Sunny Florida)

What's Michael Vick's career record vs Da Bears? Bears 27 Philly 24

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:34 PM)

I want to say Vick is 0-4 lifetime versus the Bears as a starter.

Paul (Denver)

Who plays safety if Conte or Wright get injured?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:34 PM)

Brandon Meriweather is the next man up.

JT (Naperville)

Is Forte really that surprised by the Franchise Tag? Seems like making 7 million is better than $600,000 at least.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:36 PM)

It's a ton better. I realize $7 million or so guaranteed for one year isn't the $21 million in total guarantees DeAngelo Williams got from Carolina, but $7 million is a lot of cash. I would like to see Forte sign an extenion, but I'm not going to freak out if the Bears use the tag.

Matt (Michigan)

How much better would the Bears be had they not traded away Greg Olsen?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:39 PM)

The offense would be better. It still blows me away Martz couldn't find a use for Olsen. Greg is not a good blocker, I get that, but he's a weapon down the field. Too bad.

Ernest (Columbia, MO)

How can Jerry Angelo justify releasing Chris Harris considering how thin we are at safety, especially since Detroit claimed him off waivers?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:41 PM)

The Bears don't think Harris can play anymore. That's the only explanation.

Don (Great Lakes, IL)

Are the Bears really high on Conte or is he only out there because he is the only option?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:42 PM)

They love Conte. Angelo raved about the guy in training camp. Let's see how he does. I'd say his first two starts were okay. I want to see more.

Randy (Chicago, IL)

Do you believe Martz will be retained for next year, or do you believe the bears will move in a different direction for offensive coordinator next year?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:44 PM)

At this exact moment, I'd say the Bears will have a new offensive coordinator next year. But we have a long way to go. Anything can happen over the last 9 games.

Stephen (Southern Illinois)

If Urlacher makes the Pro Bowl this year, is he a sure fire Hall of Famer?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:45 PM)

If I had a vote (I don't) Urlacher would be a first ballot Hall of Famer. No doubt about it.

matt (beloit, wi)

you state that you dont understand why people are backing forte??? he is the best offensive player we have had since walter payton. he deserves the contract. not sure how you don't see what we see. he wants a long term contract. what is wrong with that?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:48 PM)

Matt - you can do whatever you want. It's a free country. I'm not saying don't support Forte, but the Bears technically could control his rights for two more seasons. Does it really matter how much money he gets paid? To me, the whole issue is whether or not Forte continues to play for the Bears. Are you going to root less for the Bears next year if Forte is making $7 million as opposed to $9 million?

Herman (Lincoln Park)

If Jerry Angelo were to hopefully step down and retire at the end of the season would it bea forgone conclusion that Tim Ruskell would take over as GM?

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:48 PM)

I hope not.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:50 PM)

Thank you everybody. Happy Halloween. Talk to you next Monday from Philadelphia.
